Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard Carl Nicks will not play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints -- his former team -- because of a toe injury, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Nicks, who officially is listed as questionable, returned to practice this week for the first time since being diagnosed with a MRSA staph infection in August. Nicks and Bucs coach Greg Schiano both indicated that the two-time Pro Bowler needs more practice time before playing in a game. Nicks, 28, spent his first four seasons with New Orleans before signing a $47.5 million contract with Tampa Bay prior to last season.
Who dat nations there it is. Drew Brees $$ & His selfishness in not signing the contract offered to him before free agency sent the Saints spiraling down. "The Saints offered Brees more than the $18.5 million per season Tom Brady and Peyton Manning make. They offered him a $30 million signing bonus. New Orleans offered Brees the second-highest amount of guaranteed money in NFL history in the first three years of his deal. Brees didn't ask for $20 million per season as a response to the New Orleans offer. He countered by demanding $23 million per season." Because Brees didn't sign the deal, the Saints couldn't franchise all-pro guard Carl Nicks , who left to go to Tampa. Cornerback Tracy Porter also left. Marques Colston came back, but Robert Meachem , excellent at stretching the field, fled to San Diego. Brees cashed in for five years and $100 million in the middle of July. He won. The Saints , and their fans, lost.
I'm pretty happy with the moves New Orleans has made to replace the impact players we lost. We got Ben Grubbs from Baltimore to replace Carl Nicks. With Will Smith out for 4 games we have awesome D line tackle Brodrick Bunkley who ranked in top 5 in the league in run defense. Two linebackers Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne who I don't now much about but Lofton expected to start in place of Jonathan Vilma. I'm interested to see how well Nick Toon plays replacing Robert Meachem. And we already had Patrick Robinson on the roster but he will now be the starter in place of Tracy Porter.
Carl Nicks says the combination of him & Davin Joseph will be as good or better than he & Jahri Evans were in New Orleans.
