From 1801 to 1912, the president did not deliver the State-of-the-Union speech before congress, but simply sent the speech to Capitol Hill by courier, and a clerk read it to congress. This practice, started by our main character Jefferson, was aimed at avoiding the English tradition of the King “talking down” to Parliament from his throne. It was also thought, in republican America, to emphasize the co-equal nature of the legislative and executive branches. After all, neither the House Speaker nor the Senate Majority Leader visit the White House to publicly express their views of the Union’s condition. Nor do the Supreme Court justices of the judicial branch visit the Executive Mansion, nor the Capitol Building, to lecture their constitutional peers. This Jeffersonian practice saved a great deal of effort and expense in terms of setup and security, not to mention avoiding a great deal of political posturing by the parties. Woodrow Wilson, the man who gave us the Jim Crow laws, and the IRS, and elect ...

Should banks be allowed to make risky investments using taxpayer-backed money? The very idea was abhorrent to many Democrats on Capitol Hill. And some were stunned that the White House would support the bill with that provision intact, given that it would erase a key provision of the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform legislation, one of Obama’s signature achievements. But perhaps even more outrageous to Democrats was that the language in the bill appeared to come directly from the pens of lobbyists at the nation’s biggest banks, aides said. ...But "that provision" isn't just any provision. It's one that goes to the heart of the Dodd Frank reform because it would let big banks undertake risky activities with funds guaranteed by the federal government and, hence taxpayers. The omnibus appropriations bill would do that by undoing the Dodd Frank provision that ordered banks to move their riskiest activities -- such as default swaps, trading commodities, and trading derivatives -- to new entities so that de ...

"Historians will one day look back and ask how U.S. Middle East policy could be so ineffectual and so at odds with its professed values -- not to mention its strategic interests. The answer lies in the basic nature of the American political system, which permits well-organized and well-funded special interest groups to wield significant power on Capitol Hill and in the White House. In this case, the result is a policy that is bad for all concerned: for the Palestinians most of all, but also for the U.S. and Israel as well. Until the lobby's clout is weakened or politicians grow stiffer spines, Americans looking for better outcomes in the Middle East had better get used to disappointment and prepared for more trouble." ~~ Professor Stephen M. Walt

Capitol Attitude Reid in a bind over bipartisan calls for Keystone vote By Mike Emanuel Published May 01, 2014 FoxNews.com reid_042914.jpg April 29, 2014: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid talks to reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington.AP With several red-state Democrats facing tough re-elections in November, Majority Leader Harry Reid is under pressure to have the Senate vote to kickstart the Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL pipeline. Reid would undoubtedly prefer a non-binding "sense of the Senate" resolution -- a measure voicing support for the pipeline with no real teeth -- to give his members political cover without forcing the issue on the White House. But Republicans, and at least some Democrats, want something with force behind it. Reid has not yet telegraphed what he'll allow, with a vote potentially just days away. "Originally, it was supposed to be a sense of the Senate. Now they said they want it an up or down on a piece of legislation. They can't decide what it is," Reid told reporters. "I'm ope ...
It was 40 years ago today, Monday 30 April 1974: To say that Watergate dominates the news today is like saying Sky View junior Dave Jensen isn't too bad on the ballfield. President Nixon, who has been resisting a Congressional subpoena to turn over the secret tapes of his White House meetings during and after Watergate, sent 1,200 pages of edited transcripts to Capitol Hill today. The term “expletive deleted” enters the American lexicon. The President helpfully provided a 59-page summary that declare the trousers of former White House counsel John Dean, who has testified of an organized coverup, to be in flames. Utah’s Congressmen, both Democrats, are split on the White House transcripts. Wayne Owens called them today an unacceptable substitute for the subpoenaed tapes. But Cache Valley’s representative Gunn McKay called them a positive decision that will help bring the investigation to a close. Meanwhile, the White House is trying to halt an investigation into its use of U.S. Navy personnel of Fi ...

President Barack Obama’s $3.901 trillion budget would raise taxes on the rich, expand tax credits for the poor and middle class — though as of now, it merely serves as a White House wish list. Although very little of it is expected to become law — or even be seriously considered via legislation on Capitol Hill — the president’s budget still serves as a benchmark for congressional Democrats. It seeks $651 billion in new revenue from the rich, would formalize in the tax code a rule named for billionaire investor — and Obama supporter — Warren Buffett, cuts the size and pay of the military, and expands or creates a series of social programs the president has long touted. “Our budget is about choices,” Obama said while unveiling the budget at a public school classroom in Northwest Washington. “It’s about our values. As a country we’ve got to make a decision if we’re going to protect tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans or if we are going smart investments to create jobs and grow o ...
I was truly looking forward to the Elizabeth Dole Foundation Fellows social at the White House on Wednesday in DC. HOWEVER, the social has been canceled and rescheduled for Friday, in which I will not be able to stay in DC until Friday due to an important weekend adventure with my husband (YEAH YEAH YEAH). Republican Senate Could Work Around Obama's Veto Albert R. Hunt comments icon855 time iconMar 30, 2014 11:00 AM ET By Albert R. Hunt (Corrects reference to reconciliation as a way to overcome filibusters in fourth paragraph.) If Republicans take control of the U.S. Senate in this year's elections, it will be, as Vice President Joe Biden might put it more graphically, a big deal. Last week, elections handicapper Nate Silver gave a 60 percent probability that the Republicans would gain at least the half-dozen seats required for a majority. This wasn't news to top party strategists. But it produced a palpable panic among Democrats along Pennsylvania Avenue, from the White House to Capitol Hill. Rationalizations followed. Maybe the assumptions were flawed, or Republicans would overreach and set the stage for Democrats to come back in 2016. In any case, President Barack Obama has the veto pen for the last two years of his term. That glosses over the profound policy implications of a change that would affect ma ...
An email from the White House (personally addressed to me, of course): Honoring Our National Pastime By Josh Earnest, Principal Deputy Press Secretary and a lifelong Kansas City Royals fan Thanks for your petition and your participation in We the People. For more than a century, American presidents have celebrated Opening Day -- from President William Taft's 1910 first pitch from the stands, to President Obama toeing the rubber at Nationals Park in 2010. Opening Day signals a new beginning, not only for the 30 Major League Baseball teams playing for their shot at a title, but for the millions of fans who will follow the 162-game journey -- from "Play ball!" through the last out. That includes President Obama, who will be rooting for his White Sox to go all the way. While we are sympathetic to your pitch to make Opening Day a national holiday, it's a little outside our strike zone: creating permanent federal holidays is traditionally the purview of Congress. So, it's up to the men and women on Capitol Hill ...

Obama's promise to review deportations has risks Obama's promise to review deportations could further anger GOP, frustrate immigrant advocates The Associated Press March 15, 2014 By Jim Kuhnhenn President Obama's new promise to seek ways to ease his administration's rate of deportations aims to mollify angry immigrant advocates but carries risks for a White House that has insisted it has little recourse. In asking Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson to review enforcement practices, Obama could undo already fragile congressional efforts to overhaul immigration laws. And he still could fall short of satisfying the demands of pro-immigrant groups that have been increasing pressure on him to dramatically reverse the administration's record of deportations. The White House announced on Thursday that Obama had directed Johnson, who was sworn in three months ago, to see how the department “can conduct enforcement more humanely within the confines of the law.” Then, the president summoned more than a doze ...

Emboldened by its influence on Capitol Hill, the NRA is now flexing its muscles and actively working to derail Dr. Vivek Murthy’s nomination and confirmation to the position of U.S. Surgeon General. Why? Because, like many other doctors, he has in the past referred to gun violence as a threat to public health. Dr. Murthy is a Harvard- and Yale-educated doctor at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. His concern for gun safety is completely consistent with the consensus of medical and public health experts, and shared by such groups as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Public Health Association. Even C. Everett Koop, the legendary Surgeon General nominated by Ronald Reagan, described gun violence as a “public health emergency.” The NRA has no business meddling in who should be the United States’ foremost champion for public health issues. Please join me in telling the White House to stand firm behind its nomination of Dr. Murthy as t ...

Everyone is up in arms, protesting in front of the White House about Russia in the Ukraine. I watched Chicagoland tonight, a new docudrama about Rahm Emanuel's daily dealings with issues in Chicago, among which are two little girls being shot while jumping rope (one died); first graders being jumped on the way to school; and other children hoping their neighborhood elementary school doesn't close, because if it does, they would have to go to schools in nearby neighborhoods that could be deadly for them. Really! People should be protesting in front of Capitol Hill for the National Guard to go to Chicago to help out there because clearly things are out of control there!!!@

CALIFORNIA IN STATE OF EMERGENCY California drought: Obama to visit state to highlight crisis Tribune Co. Published 4:48 pm, Saturday, February 8, 2014 President Obama will travel to Fresno this week to highlight federal efforts designed to help farmers and others hit by a severe drought. A White House official said Obama will visit the Central Valley city on Friday. The White House already had announced Obama's plans to meet with Jordan's King Abdullah II at the Sunnylands estate near Palm Springs that day. Obama's visit comes as interest grows on Capitol Hill in taking action to alleviate California's water crisis. The Republican-controlled House passed a bill Wednesday dubbed a response to the drought, but the measure faces a White House veto threat. Democrats have attacked the House legislation for rolling back environmental protections. They have called for hearings and begun work on a separate measure. Rep. David Valadao, R-Hanford (Kings County), said in a statement Friday night that he is "cautiou ...
Haiti President Michel Martelly is likely to feel pressure on scheduling elections in Haiti as he meets Wednesday with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, ahead of a Thursday meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House. At least a dozen members of the House Foreign Affairs committee have agreed to attend an 8:30 a.m. breakfast with Martelly organized by Miami Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Martelly will also meet with Secretary of State John Kerry then have lunch with members of the Congressional Black Caucus. The meetings will be a trial run for his Thursday visit to the White House, where Obama is likely to commend Martelly for accepting a Senate bill on elections, but urge him to continue to work on breaking the political gridlock that his dogged his presidency and helped delay long-overdue senatorial and municipal elections. The balloting for one-third of Haiti’s 30-member Senate has been delayed since May 2012, while municipal elections have been delayed since April 2011.
Nation to hit debt ceiling on Friday By Peter Schroeder Debt-limit drama will officially hit Capitol Hill on Friday when the nation’s $16.7 trillion borrowing limit is hit. The limit was suspended until Feb. 7 under the deal to end the recent Government Shutdown. After Friday, Treasury says its “extraordinary measures” to move money around and avoid a missed payment will last until the end of the month. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew has pressed Congress for urgent action, and will again weigh in on the matter Monday with remarks at the Bipartisan Policy Center. Republicans are insisting on some policy concessions for hiking the ceiling, while Democrats and the White House insist they will not negotiate. The Congressional Budget Office will give its annual update to the economic and budget outlook this week, providing a fresh picture of the nation’s fiscal health and deficits. CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf will break down the numbers with the House Budget Committee on Wednesday. The Senate Budget Co ...
Catholic Bishops push Boehner on immigration Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York sent a letter to Speaker Boehner on Thursday urging the House to pass immigration reform legislation by the end of the year. “The House has a responsibility to debate and attempt to resolve public policy issues that challenge the nation. Immigration is a challenge that has confounded our nation for years, with little action from our federally elected officials. It is a matter of great moral urgency that cannot wait any longer for action,” Dolan wrote in the letter. Dolan serves as president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which has significant pull on Capitol Hill. In the letter, Dolan wrote that the House should pass immigration reform “as soon as possible, ideally prior to the end of the calendar year." President Obama pressed GOP lawmakers in a statement from the White House last month to do the same, and said he’s open to accepting any immigration legislation as long as it includes a path to citizenship ...
Top Obama aide predicts drama-free U.S. debt ceiling increase A top White House official voiced confidence on Thursday that Republicans would agree in the next few weeks to lift the country's borrowing limit without using the confrontational tactics that rattled financial markets in past years. White House Budget Director Sylvia Mathews Burwell said she believes there is less appetite on Capitol Hill for the messy fiscal standoffs that have taken place in recent years, such as the 2011 struggle over the debt limit and last October's budget fight that led to a 16-day shutdown of the government. In an interview with Reuters, Burwell pointed to the passage earlier this month of a $1.1 trillion bill to keep the government funded for the next nine months. The vote to approve the budget bill followed an agreement reached in December between Republican Representative Paul Ryan and Democratic Senator Patty Murray that included some deficit reduction along with a modest easing of automatic budget cuts known as the ...
Look out for Martial Law being implemented tonight - and we are hosed. Heil Hitler ops Heil Berry! According to the White House, President Obama plans to use tonight's State of the Union address to announce his impending dictatorship. Okay, okay... perhaps that's not exactly what Senior Advisor Dan Pfeiffer wrote in an email to supporters on January 25. But it's close enough. Both Pfeiffer and White House Press Secretary Jay Carney have called 2014 an "action year," code words for the president's plan to strong-arm Capitol Hill in the months ahead. If Congress is averse to his agenda, well, they'd better get out of the way. Obama has a pen and a phone, and he's not afraid to use them. Meanwhile, with the 2014 election season nearly upon us, Obama is facing significant pressure to advance his agenda and boost the Democrat Party outlook. And apparently that won't be a problem! Obama will simply flip the switch on his "unilateral presidential authority," as The Wall Street Journal called it, and start laying ...
The ominous history of the time period around April 19-20 - Bill Koenig Note from Bill: The following is from the "Koenig's Eye View from the White House" April 5th news report. There has been one serious news story after another in the past few days. First, it was the beginning of Secretary of State John Kerry's push for Israeli-Palestinian talks; then the North Korean nuclear threat; a collapse of gold's value; the Boston Marathon bombings; heightened security in Washington, DC; letters sent to President Obama and Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) tested positive for ricin; the very heated gun debate on Capitol Hill and at the White House; Iran triples installations of centrifuges at Natanz and a major explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas two days before the 20th anniversary of the Waco/Branch Davidian raid by FBI/ATF of April 19, 1993. The West's explosion size was due to a large amount of ammonium nitrate in storage – the highly explosive chemical compound used in the Murrah (Federal) Building b ...
Thanks to the work and generosity of you and our members, we can be proud of some impressive advocacy achievements in 2013. Here are just a few: AAUW helped lead the fight for passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). AAUW members played a significant role by personally visiting congressional offices and sending thousands of messages to Congress. Without AAUW, campus sexual assault measures would have been overlooked in the legislation that became law. Because of AAUW members' stalwart advocacy for pay equity, AAUW was invited to stand with President Barack Obama at the White House ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act. As state lawmakers and courts threatened to roll back voting rights protections, AAUW members across the country mobilized at colleges, community events, and other public spaces to register people to vote during National Voter Registration Day 2013. The AAUW Action Fund Capitol Hill Lobby Corps continued to travel to Capitol Hill weekly to meet with membe ...
Obama's White House has become the home of the whopper By Washington Times (DC) January 7, 2014 6:47 am One bad thing about our media-mad age is that it's difficult to keep up with all the lies we're being told by our government. The good news is that falsehoods don't have the legs they once had. Remember when Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper was asked by Sen. Ron Wyden, Oregon Democrat, during a hearing on March 12, 2013, "Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?" Mr. Clapper answered, "No sir ... not wittingly." After Edward Snowden spilled the National Security Agency's beans three months later, Mr. Clapper retreated to his Ministry of Truth persona when asked by NBC's Andrea Mitchell on June 10 why he lied to Mr. Wyden: "I responded in what I thought was the most truthful, or least untruthful, manner by saying, 'no.'" Mr. Clapper in February 2011 told a Capitol Hill hearing, whose audience he apparently assessed had fallen off a t ...
After Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7, 1941, the Secret Service found President Franklin D. Roosevelt was to give his Day of Infamy speech to Congress on Tuesday, and although the trip from the White House to Capitol Hill was short, agents weren’t sure how to transport him safely now that the country was under enemy attack. At the time, Federal Law prohibited buying any cars that cost more than $750, so they would have to get clearance from Congress to do that, and nobody had time for that. One of the Secret Service members, however, discovered that the US Treasury had seized the bulletproof car that mobster Al Capone owned when he was sent to jail in 1931. They cleaned it up, made sure it was running perfectly and had it ready for the President’s trip across town. Al Capone's 1928 Cadillac 341a Town Sedan - now the President's Limo in December, 1941 And run properly it did. Capone’s car was a sight to behold. Does anyone know if the White House and Capitol Hill trees are still up because if so head I'm heading down there for photos! (In the UK decorations stay up till 6th - Twelfth Night - I suspect it's not the same here?)
Alan Colmes ADDS TOO MUCH PRO-OBAMACARE 'BALANCE' FOR THE Kelly File... by Ellen - December 27, 2013 Although the Kelly File is touted as a non-opinion show that tells “both sides,” liberal Alan Colmes apparently told the President Obama side of ObamaCare a little too well last night. To protect the Fox News viewers’ ears, guest host Shannon Bream just had to jump in and help her conservative guest drive home some Republican talking points. The discussion was purportedly about an email from the White House stating that partisan politics on Capitol Hill are “no excuse for inaction.” “Who should get the blame?” Bream asked, as if we’d never guess the Fox News answer. Just to make sure, she turned to conservative Chris Plante. Unfortunately, he overreached by saying Obama “hasn’t gotten anything done” except ObamaCare. Colmes grabbed the opening and made a forceful challenge. He said, “How can you saying he’s gotten nothing (done) but ObamaCare? He’s killed more Al Qaeda leaders, ...
WHY DO THE REPUBLICAN'S NEED TO DO ANYTHING. THIS IS HELPING THE DEMOCRATS.THIS WOMAN IS A LIB AND HAS OBAMA'S BLESSING.WHY? US--Budget.Battle House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., left, and Senate Budget ... WASHINGTON (AP) — Backers of a narrowly drawn budget deal are selling it as a way to stabilize Congress' shaky fiscal practices and mute some of the partisan rancor that has helped send lawmakers' public approval ratings plummeting. But the bipartisan pact doesn't solve long-term tax and spending issues, leaving liberals and conservatives alike grumbling. House and Senate floor votes are being sought on the plan announced Tuesday by Republican Rep. Paul Ryan and Democratic Sen. Patty Murray, and applauded by the White House, with the aim of securing passage before lawmakers go home for the holidays. But skepticism surfaced in both the Democratic and Republican caucuses. Sen. Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican and leading deficit hawk, panned the new deal in an interview Wednesday, say ...
Here's what Sean Hannity has this afternoon on FM 102.9 AM 1310 NewsTalk KZRG. At 3:05pm, Jamie Dupree, our Washington insider, joins Sean with his daily report. While the White House yesterday trumpeted a surge in interest in healthcare.gov and recent software fixes to that health insurance website, federal officials acknowledged that more work is needed on the "back end" of the site. At 3:35pm, Congressmen Phil Roe of Tennessee and James Lankford of Oklahoma. Lankford was one of the few Reps. invited to the meet with the President when we were in the midst of the shutdown. Roe has provided an alternative, The American Healthcare Reform Act that allows interstate insurance options and a feasibility unlike other alternatives being offered. And at 4:05pm, Luke Chung, President of FMS, Inc. and David Kennedy, CEO of online security company Trusted Sec. Both now have testified on Capitol Hill. While the Obama Administration runs around telling everyone how great their site is doing, Luke and David are deal . ...
President Barack Obama called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Sunday, just hours after the Israeli leader harshly criticized an American-backed deal that would temporarily ease certain sanctions on Iran in exchange for a six-month freeze in that nation's nuclear program. Netanyahu had called the agreement, struck early Sunday morning in Geneva, a "historic mistake," a position that gained support from some pro-Israel lawmakers in both parties on Capitol Hill. White House officials presented the Obama-Netanyahu conversation in a positive light in a readout sent to reporters Sunday afternoon. "The two leaders reaffirmed their shared goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," the White House said. "Consistent with our commitment to consult closely with our Israeli friends, the President told the Prime Minister that he wants the United States and Israel to begin consultations immediately regarding our efforts to negotiate a comprehensive solution. The President underscored that the United St ...
The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO) ruled that some of the administration's ads promoting the new program were illegal while others were misleading. GAO investigators also found that the White House illegally withheld data from Congress on the cost of the new law. The Congressman who crafted the bill soon left Capitol Hill for K Street, where he made millions of dollars annually as a heath care lobbyist. The new federal web site allowing people to compare plans and prices was delayed by weeks, while just 300 customer service reps manned the phones to help new enrollees. Yet over six million people immediately lost their coverage, while hundreds of thousands more would be refused treatment because of malfunctions in the computer systems linking providers and insurers. In response to the mushrooming crisis, governors in mostly Democratic states spent billions to continue coverage for their residents, while the President pleaded with insurance companies not to cut off their current policyh ...
Obama Facing Democratic Rebellion over Obamacare Recent headlines from Capitol Hill tell the story: * "House Democrats' Frustration With Obamacare Rollout Reaches Fever Pitch," says Roll Call, noting that "a sizable portion of Democrats could defect and vote 'yes'" on the Upton bill to cancel the insurance policy cancellations triggered by Obamacare. * "Democrats Threaten to Abandon Obama on Health Law Provision," says the New York Times. * "House Dems about to 'go crazy'" according to The Hill. * "Tensions escalate between Democrats, White House" is the Politico headline over a story which begins: "Democrats are on the verge of abandoning President Barack Obama on vital elements of his signature health care law at a time when his poll numbers have been sliding with three years left to go in his second term." Politico goes on to report that, at a "raucous caucus" meeting today, Democrats hammered the White House over its handling of the Obamacare rollout. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) is quoted as saying, "T ...

Credit: Reuters/Jason Reed NEW ORLEANS/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House said on Friday that Israeli and Saudi criticism of a deal taking shape with Iran to curb its nuclear program was premature, as unease about the plan grew among U.S. lawmakers and Middle Eastern allies. "There is no deal, but there is an opportunity here for a possible diplomatic solution, and that is exactly what the president is pursuing," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters traveling with President Barack Obama on Air Force One to New Orleans. "So any critique of the deal is premature," Earnest said. President Obama and other supporters of immigration reform see an open road on Capitol Hill toward passing legislation and have stepped up efforts with less than 20 working days left in this legislative session. The White House confirmed Monday that Obama will hold a Roosevelt Room meeting on immigration reform, after a Republican senator influential in getting such legislation passed in his chamber expressed optimism that the Republican-led House could be poised to follow. The administration has not released the names of the meeting attendees. But Press Secretary Jay Carney, in confirming the session, suggested the White House will continue to tout reform support from both political parties and big business, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “Immigration reform will reduce the deficit by $850 billion over the first 20 years,” Carney told reporters. “It’s good for the economy and the right thing to do. We hope the House will follow the Senate and take action.” A Senate Budget Committee spo ...
The Week That Was Reality was again the nemesis of Democrats. Millions have received word that because of Obamacare, their health insurance policies will be cancelled. Millions more soon will. Most of those whose policies aren't cancelled will have to pay more. Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini offers a succinct explanation why. Reality belted Obamabot Sue Klinkhamer in the mouth. Her tale of woe, chronicled by the Chicago Sun-Times, is a must read for those who indulge in the guilty pleasure of schadenfreude. A "senior Democratic consultant with strong ties to the White House and Capitol Hill" summarized the political impact of the policy cancellations - up to 900,000 in California alone - and premium hikes this way in an email to Ron Fournier of the National Journal: "Dem Party is F'd." The White House and Democrats in Congress have known since 2010 as many as 93 million could lose their insurance, but kept lying about it. Instapundit makes an excellent suggestion on how Republicans might capitalize on their ...
WASHINGTON — A bloody resurgence of al-Qaida in Iraq is prompting Baghdad to ask the U.S. for more weapons, training and manpower, two years after pushing American troops out of the country. The request will be discussed during a White House meeting Friday between Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and President Barack Obama in what Baghdad hopes will be a fresh start in a complicated relationship that has been marked both by victories and frustrations for each side. Al-Maliki will discuss Iraq's plight in a public speech Thursday at the U.S. Institute for Peace in Washington. "We know we have major challenges of our own capabilities being up to the standard. They currently are not," Lukman Faily, the Iraqi ambassador to the U.S., told The Associated Press in an interview Wednesday. "We need to gear up, to deal with that threat more seriously. We need support and we need help." He added, "We have said to the Americans we'd be more than happy to discuss all the options short of boots on the ground." "B ...
the often-liberal National Journal reported that a top Democratic strategist with ties to the White House and Capitol Hill wrote an email with a subject line “Dem Party is F*d.”
G'day gang, heres my daily update. Yesterday's highlight for me was without a doubt climbing right up into the Statue of Liberty's crown. After 377 steps up a narrow walkway, looking out those little ports down at the ground and the tablet she is holding was amazingly surreal. It was also her 127th birthday on the day we went and the first day Ellis immigration island opened since Katrina which made it special. I even got interviewed by some yank radio station, and apparently I "don't sound like I'm from Brooklyn." 9/11 memorial and walking the Brooklyn bridge were both spectacular too. Today we did a tour to the nations Capitol and saw the White House, Lincoln statue, Vietnam & Korean War Memorials & Capitol Hill. Driving through the Lincoln tunnel in NY which is 30 metres UNDER the Hudson River was pretty incredible also. I am writing this message from a genuine traffic jam in Washington, D.C. and if we don't get moving soon I am going to poop my pants. Love you all xxx
Breaking News » Fallout on US spying scandal spreads to Capitol Hill DEBKAfile October 29, 2013, 10:43 AM (GMT+02:00) Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif) said Monday that the Senate Intelligence Committee which she heads had not been informed of “certain surveillance activities” for more than a decade, she was “totally opposed to collecting intelligence on leaders of US allies – including France, Spain, Mexico and Germany” and would initiate a major review of the NSA operation. Sen. Feinstein said the White House had informed her that “collection on our allies would not continue.” However, administration officials later stressed that a final decision on the matter has not been made. National Intelligence director James Clapper is expected to face questions when he testifies before the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday. "Funeral Today For Stamford Woman Killed In DC Car Chase New York (AP) - The family of the Connecticut woman shot to death by police after she tried to ram her vehicle through a White House barrier will hold a funeral for her in Brooklyn this morning. Miriam Carey, 34, a dental hygienist, is survived by her 1-year-old daughter, who was in the vehicle during the Oct. 3 car chase through the streets of Washington. A public viewing and wake were held Monday at Grace Funeral Chapel, where the funeral is scheduled. In Washington, a prayer vigil was held for Carey on Capitol Hill on Monday. Carey had been diagnosed with postpartum depression and psychosis. Authorities said she believed President Obama was monitoring her electronically."
As U.S. politicians of both political parties are still shuffling back and forth between the White House and the Capitol Hill without striking a viable deal to bring normality to the body politic they brag about, it is perhaps a good time for the befuddled world to start considering building a de-Americanized world. Emerging from the bloodshed of the Second World War as the world's most powerful nation, the United States has since then been trying to build a global empire by imposing a postwar world order, fueling recovery in Europe, and encouraging regime-change in nations that it deems hardly Washington-friendly. With its seemingly unrivaled economic and military might, the United States has declared that it has vital national interests to protect in nearly every corner of the globe, and been habituated to meddling in the business of other countries and regions far away from its shores.
House of Representatives. The Treasury Department has said the national debt ceiling must be raised by Thursday. WASHINGTON — Senate leaders said Monday they are close to an agreement to reopen government and avoid an unprecedented U.S. debt default before the Thursday deadline. "We hope with good fortune and the support of all you (senators) —recognizing how hard this is for everybody — that perhaps tomorrow will be a bright day," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Monday evening on the Senate floor. A flurry of negotiations occurred throughout the day as Reid and his Republican counterpart, Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell of Kentucky, engaged with each other, their own members, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and White House staff on the terms of a deal to end the budget impasse, which has kept the government partially shutdown since Oct. 1. McConnell said Monday morning, "I share his optimism that we will get a result that is acceptable to both sides." The draft proposal s ...
While funding dispute in Washington remains unsettled, the emerging world leaders look upon the United States with genuine worry on what was happening on Capitol Hill and in the White House, including Washington’s most important economic partners, Saudi Arabia, and China on international recovery unless the United States raise its debt ceiling and reopen its government to rejoin the common world to play by the same rules.
ST PATRICK'S, AGRA: USA-NASA: DAY 8: WASHINGTON DC The day started with the WDC city tour with the first stop at the seat of power - The Capitol Hill. It was then the White House, followed by the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnamese War memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. The students were also taken around through various other landmark sites in Washington. After an Indian lunch they left for New Jersey. They have safely reached their hotel in New Jersey and had an Indian dinner before retiring to bed. Tomorrow's day is spent in New York.
Before you rejoice that the government has seized an alleged terrorist in Libya who was indicted for planning the notorious 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Africa, before you join the House of Representatives in a standing ovation for the Capitol Hill police who killed a woman whose car struck a White House fence and who then drove away at a high speed, and before you commend the New York Police Department for quickly getting to the bottom of an alleged assault by a motorcycle gang that tormented a young family on a city street, please give some thought to the rule of law. ~Andrew Napalitano
Senate leaders try to end debt crisis; talks fail in House Published: Saturday, 12 Oct 2013 | 6:06 PM ET By: Jeremy W. Peters and Ashley Parker WASHINGTON — Senators Harry Reid and Mitch Mcconnell on Saturday began last-ditch negotiations on reopening the government and raising the debt ceiling as talks between House Republicans and the White House collapsed, dashing hopes for a quick resolution to the political crisis that has paralyzed the government. The dead end with the House, coming just five days before the nation reaches its borrowing limit and faces the possibility of a crippling financial default, has left Republicans on Capitol Hill with no easy options. "No deal," Representative Paul D. Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, said as he left a meeting with fellow Republicans in the Capitol. There is now little doubt that any deal to reopen the federal bureaucracy would have to come from the Senate, where Mr. Reid, the majority leader, and Mr. McConnell, the minority leader, sat dow ...

Lew sticks with 'catastrophic' warnings about debt-ceiling, but no specifics October 06, 2013 FoxNews.com FILE: Feb. 13, 2013: Jack Lew testifies during his confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., before the Senate Finance Committee.AP Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew on Sunday defended accusations of fear mongering over Congress potentially failing to increase the federal debt limit -- including his assertion that the economic impact would be “catastrophic.” He declined, however, to provide specific examples, saying instead that Congress blowing the Oct. 17 debt-limit deadline would be “reckless.” “The consequences are immediate and very bad,” Lew said on “Fox News Sunday.” “The direction is bad. There is a range of how bad.” Lew also said the White House is willing to negotiate on fiscal issues, despite President Obama repeatedly saying he won’t have those talks as part of a debt-ceiling deal. “The president has been and continues to be open to negotiations,” he s ...
Obama’s intransigence closed America’s natural wonders Ron Arnold For anyone who doubts that President Obama and his minions are choosing to make the Government Shutdown as painful as possible, be informed that it’s a decades-old White House ploy with a revealing name: “the Washington Monument Strategy.” It works like this: Turn visitors away from our great national memorials to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln, point on the Mall at Capitol Hill, and yell “Congress made me do it.” Then hope the public falls for it. It almost backfired Tuesday morning when a group of 92 veterans arrived at the barricaded World War II Memorial, guests of a citizen sponsored “Honor Flight” from Mississippi. A National Park Service policewoman wouldn’t let them in. A group of Republican congressmen who had come as greeters defied the NPS and shoved the barriers aside. The valiant veterans, some in wheelchairs, took the memorial like it was Iwo Jima or Normandy Beach. Park police se ...

Issues are there every where, Government offices are not working in US for the past two days. Ready more With that history in mind, here's what we know and what we don't know about the shutdown. DIVIDED CONGRESS What we know: Democrats and Republicans are deeply divided and barely on speaking terms these days. Feelings are hurt and fingers are pointing. Right now the wounds are too fresh and no one is in the mood to give anyone a break. The Republican-led House tried to pass a piecemeal funding plan on Tuesday night to pay for the District of Columbia, Veterans Affairs and national parks. It failed to win the required two-thirds vote, but has no future in any case. The Democratic-led Senate wasn't about to agree to it and the White House promised a veto. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called the strategy as "just another wacky idea by tea party Republicans." President Barack Obama chimed in Tuesday, calling the Republicans "reckless" and saying they're holding the nation hostage to defund Obamacare. Re ...

The new mini-series: Government Shutdown! In a nutshell: It's on! It's off! It's back on! It's been delayed until mid December.(Note to self: buy the small tree this year and ask for warm slippers). Why all the confusion? ObamaCare. Will they vote yay or nay? They could, however, go through with the shutdown anyway at 12:01am Tomorrow...regardless. "However there was a growing sense on Capitol Hill on Sunday that House Republicans were prepared to see through their threat of a shutdown, which would begin at 12.01am ET on Tuesday, even though polls show they would be blamed for a maneuver that could damage the party during next year's midterm election. Republicans in Congress had the opportunity to pass a routine, simple continuing resolution that keeps the government running for a few more weeks," said White House spokesman Jay Carney. "But instead, Republicans decided they would rather make an ideological point by demanding the sabotage of the healthcare law." - The Guardian Reaction: What? I think w ...

Shutdown countdown: What the next eight days could bring By Paul Kane The Washington Post Sept. 23, 2013 On Friday, the House passed a measure that would keep the government running through mid-December. But it came with what Democrats consider a poison pill: It defunds President Obama’s signature health-care law, known as Obamacare. There is no way whatsoever — think pigs flying — that the Senate will agree to the House plan. Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) said the House bill was “dead,” then for emphasis added: “Dead.” That sets up eight days of brinkmanship between the Republican House and the Democratic Senate and White House, leading to midnight Sept. 30, when much of the government will shut down if there’s no deal. Leaders on Capitol Hill expect the face-off to go right up to the deadline, if not beyond. Below is a day-by-day look at how it’s all likely to play out — with the caveat that events can change quickly. Monday: The Senate will convene briefly, with just ...
First of all, the Patriot Act introduced by Sensenbrenner and passed into law in 2001 had been introduced before (almost word-for-word) during the Clinton administration. It was soundly defeated by Republican majorities in both the US House and Senate. Then after 9-11, these same Republicans passed the Patriot Act into law. And you read that the principal sponsor of the Act in the House, Jim Sensenbrenner, said he had “always worried about potential abuses.” Then why the heck did he and the rest of the Republicans in the House and Senate pass the darn thing? You know why. Back in 2001, a Republican was in the White House. As we have seen time and time again, party partisanship usually trumps loyalty to the Constitution on Capitol Hill. Think about it: when Democrat Bill Clinton was President, Democrats on Capitol Hill strongly supported what became known as the Patriot Act; and Republicans opposed it. But when Republican G.W. Bush was President, Republicans supported (and passed) the Patriot Act; and ...
June 19, 2013 Guess Who's Getting $70 Million in Bonuses? 6/19/2013 4:51:00 AM - Katie PavlichDespite being under heavy scrutiny from both Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill and all over the country for inappropriately targeting conservative groups, IRS employees are about to receive $70 million in bonuses. The Internal Revenue Service is about to pay $70 million in employee bonuses despite an Obama Administration directive to cancel discretionary bonuses because of automatic spending cuts enacted this year, according to a GOP senator. Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa says his office has learned that the IRS is executing an agreement with the employees' union on Wednesday to pay the bonuses. Grassley says the bonuses should be canceled under an April directive from the White House budget office. The directive was written by Danny Werfel, a former budget official who has since been appointed acting IRS commissioner. "The IRS always claims to be short on resources," Grassley said. "But it appears to have ...
Groups work to relight fire on gun control By Jonathan Easley and Mike Lillis - 06-13-13 05:00 AM ET Gun control groups are marking six months since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting by pressuring the Senate to reconsider background checks legislation. The offensive includes visits to lawmakers by families of the Newtown victims, events at the White House and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s (I) concerted effort to politically injure the four Senate Democrats who voted against tougher background checks. Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns is busing the Newtown Action Alliance into Washington. The citizen group, which is in part made up of families of Sandy Hook victims, will hold a press conference, hand-deliver messages to lawmakers and form a “human ribbon remembrance” of the victims at Capitol Hill on Thursday. To: Friends & Supporters From: Gary L. Bauer Obama Promotes Rice & Power News broke this morning that National Security Advisor Tom Donilon will resign next month. President Obama will be promoting U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice to replace him. You remember Susan Rice, right? She was picked by the White House to go on five national Sunday talk shows and mislead the American people about the Benghazi attacks. "What sparked the violence was a very hateful video on the Internet," Rice said. "It was a reaction to a video that had nothing to do with the United States." Many believe Rice was simply reciting heavily-edited talking points, and was probably the one senior-level person who didn't know better. Nevertheless, her promotion says a lot about the Obama mindset. James Carville said, "…this is kind of an in your face appointment." Obama initially tried to promote Rice to Secretary of State when Hillary announced she was leaving. But outrage on Capitol Hill was overwhelming and Rice withdrew. There is nothing ...

Obama names three to top court, challenging Republicans US President Barack Obama has nominated three lawyers to a top federal appeals court in Washington DC, while daring Republicans to defy him. Flanked at the White House by the trio, he urged their swift confirmation to the Washington appeals court. His appointees, two women and a black man, reflect his administration's commitment to bring diversity to the mainly white, male federal bench. But a top Senate Republican said there was no need to fill the vacancies. "What I'm doing today is my job; I need the Senate to do its job," Mr Obama said in the Rose Garden on Tuesday, as he announced his nominees to the bench of what is sometimes called the second-highest court in the US. 'Political obstruction' The Democratic president accused Senate Republicans of blocking his nominees. Senator Charles Grassley on Capitol Hill in Washington on 23 April 2013 Republican Senator Charles Grassley says the appointees are not needed "My judicial nominees have waited th ...

Today's news from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.): Obamacare: Sen. Bernie Sanders criticized the Obama Administration for redirecting funds set aside for community health centers to pay for implementation of the Affordable Care Act. “Taking, as I understand, $150 million designed to expand community health centers and putting them into another area is to me very, very disturbing and a real setback for what we had hoped to accomplish in strengthening primary care in America,” Sanders, a key proponent of the health centers, told National Journal. He has voiced his concern to the White House over what he regards as a violation of the spirit of the law. Corporate Lobbyists Defend Tax Breaks: Sen. Sanders’ bill to end tax breaks for corporations that shelter income overseas was one target of big-money interests that unleashed thousands of lobbyists on Capitol Hill. More than 2,220 organizations spent an estimated $773 million bringing 6,503 lobbyists to influence thousands of tax bills in 2011 and 2012, Reut ...
We The People of the United States of America offer as evidence of impeachable offenses: Exhibit # 1: Three Scandals a Charm? Posted on May 14, 2013 IRS, Benghazi, AP. Which of the 3 could take down Obama? Each in their own should be enough. All three together show the corruption at the core of liberals. Check it out: Sometimes when it rains on second-term presidents, they need more than an umbrella. President Obama tried Monday to dismiss as “political games” persistent questions about how the White House handled last year’s attacks in Benghazi, Libya, while at the same time a new uproar about IRS scrutiny of conservative advocacy organizations ignited on Capitol Hill. Obama said if IRS agents willfully exercised political bias, responsible personnel must be “held accountable.” As he was speaking during a brief news conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron, the reactions of House and Senate lawmakers suggested Obama did little to tamp down the Benghazi controversies, which have pers ...
Harry's visit to the the Walter Reed National Military Center in Maryland came on the second day of his week-long U.S. tour, which kicked off with visits to Capitol Hill and the White House yesterday, before he paid his respects to fallen soldiers at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia this morning.
Went to the White House, Washington Monument, Capitol Hill, three Smithsonians, and Georgetown all in one day and all by foot.
President Obama is pouring on the charm -- at least what passes for charm on Capitol Hill. This week, he'll make the 15-minute drive from the White House to the Capitol to visit lawmakers face-to-face. All in an effort to improve relations -- and modify those forced spending cuts. Republicans? Well, let's just say they're not totally.charmed. House Whip Kevin McCarthy told CNN's Candy Crowley: "I believe any time that both parties are talking, it's a good thing.  Now, this should have happened four years ago.  I'm glad it's happening.  But is this about politics or is this genuine?...only time will tell." What's not so charming is the gamesmanship. Oh, yeah -- that hasn't stopped. Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert introduced a bill making it illegal for the President to use federal funds to go play golf. That is, unless the White House resumes its tours -- for tourists. "We'll be able to get the Democrats and Republicans across America, people that don't even have a party --they're just Americans. T ...

Not just any organization AIPAC pro-Israel lobby, as written by John Mearsheimer, Professor of Political Science of the University of Chicago, and Stephen Walt, Professor of International Relations of the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, in a book entitled The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy. Their influence is very wide and in various sectors, including politics, economics, and the media. The people they are everywhere: the White House, Capitol Hill, the department, to the Wall Street. This Zionist lobby organization advocates moving the Democrats and Republicans. They formed a PAC (Political Action Committee) and a super PAC to raise money. They then bribed the senators and members of Congress to be submissive and willing to defend every policy in favor of Israel.
CNN Catches Obama's Falsehood on Sequester; Networks Barely Report It CNN's Dana Bash fact-checked President Obama's falsehood about the sequester on Friday, but the major networks didn't exactly follow CNN's lead in reporting the distortion that Capitol Hill janitors and police would receive a pay cut because of the sequester. In his Friday press conference, Obama claimed, "They're going to have less pay, the [Capitol Hill] janitors, the security guards. They just got a pay cut." Shortly after that, CNN's Bash obtained from the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms that the workers would not receive a pay cut, just a limit on overtime pay. NBC ignored the distortion on its weekend newscasts, while CBS and ABC reported it one time each. This Week host George Stephanopoulos brought up the claim about the sequester in a Sunday interview with White House economic adviser Gene Sperling: "And at least twice this week the administration got caught exaggerating the impact. The President claimed the Capitol janitors are going ...
via POLITICO: The White House is preparing to cede more ground to Senate Republican foes and hand over documents related to the Benghazi attacks to try to secure the confirmation of John O. Brennan to run the CIA, POLITICO has confirmed. After releasing official timelines, an investigation and sending Cabinet officials up to Capitol Hill for hearings, now the Obama Administration has agreed to surrender email messages between top national security officials that discuss how to describe the Sept. 11 attack, a Senate aide confirmed Friday evening. The documents will be sent to the Senate Intelligence Committee, which has jurisdiction over the Brennan confirmation. Asked about an earlier report from The Associated Press, White House spokesman Tommy Vietor declined to confirm that documents were being handed over, saying, "We are having conversations with members of Congress about their requests and we will continue those conversations." Key Republican senators had demanded the additional White House disclosu ...

There too many political parties interest in the United States to hold Barack Obama accountable. 1. Democratic Party leaders are not holding Barack Obama accountable vis-a-vis the crisis in the Congo due to a few things. a. Obama may not come to their fundraisers or other party leaders may not support their campaigns for calling out a democratic president b. They may not get appointments to key offices opened for democrats or nominated for positions c. They may not be invited to the White House or other Democratic Party events e. They may lose party support for giving Republicans something to talk about to attack a democratic president 2. Feeling Patriotic About President’s Day By Shaunti This past summer, something amazing happened when our extended family traveled to my old stomping grounds in Washington, D.C., to take a tourist tour of the White House. I used to work on Capitol Hill, and had friends who worked in the White House, so I had been there several times. But I was thrilled to have a chance to introduce the kids to a place that holds such special meaning in our country. But nothing could have prepared me for the moment when a tour guide stopped about 30 of us who just happened to be there at just the right time, and beckoned us outside. It turned out, the President was about to leave on Marine One, the presidential helicopter. If we wanted to, we were invited to head out to the back lawn and watch. If we wanted?? Are you kidding? Every person in that room had different political viewpoints, but as we walked out onto the awe-inspiring sweep of the back lawn, the white marble of that beautiful old building rising ab ...
John Popoff via Steven P. Duhon Steven P. Duhon Defense Secretary Leon Panetta testified this morning on Capitol Hill that President Barack Obama was absent the night four Americans were murdered in Benghazi on September 11, 2012. In fact, Panetta says that the night of 9/11, he did not communicate with a single person at the White House. The attack resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Panetta said that, save their 5 o'clock prescheduled meeting with the president the day of September 11, Obama did not call or communicate in anyway with the defense secretary that day. There were no calls about the what was going on in Benghazi. He never called to check-in.

WHERE ARE THE POLITICIAN VOICES WHEN POLICE OFFICERS MURDERED UNARMED AMERICAN CITIZEN IN AMERICA “DRONE KILLING MORE IMPORTANT??? Administration lawyers found it is lawful to kill an American citizen if a “high-level” government official believes the target is an operational leader of Al Qaeda who poses “an imminent threat of violent attack against the United States” and if capture is infeasible, according to a newly disclosed Justice Department document. The Obama Administration has carried out more than 300 CIA drown strikes in Pakistan, far more than his predecessor, President George W. Bush, according to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. Pressure is building from Capitol Hill for the White House to outline its legal authority to kill American citizens in counterterrorism operations. Killing anti-American Citizen Terrorist” oversea by way of a Drone is America protecting Americans! Politician against the use of Drones against “anti-American Citizen Terrorist” are hypocritical! John Gaultier WARNING NOT TO BE IGNORED: Wall Street Journal editorial warned that President Obama is moving to control the Internet by Executive Order. "Any day now, the White House will issue an Executive Order on Cyber Security, according to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano who said last week that the measure 'is close to completion.'" It noted that "the White House intends to go ahead with its order in the face of vociferous opposition on Capitol Hill." "According to leaked versions of the draft, the Executive Order would impose security standards for 16 critical industries" and that "private companies have innovated and invested heavily to protect themselves without regulatory prodding. What they need from the government is an information-sharing program and liability protection." This is just one more Executive Order that would, along with others, impose a totalitarian control over every aspect of life in America on the pretext of a national emergency. We had a national emergency on 9/11 ...

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama lauded Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as one of his closest advisers and said their shared vision for America's role in the world persuaded his one-time rival – and potential successor – to be his top diplomat while he dealt with the shattered economy at home. During a joint interview that aired Sunday, Obama and Clinton chuckled as they described their partnership and stoked speculation that Obama may prefer Clinton to succeed him in the White House after the 2016 elections. Clinton is leaving Obama's Cabinet soon, and speculation about the former First Lady and senator has only grown more intense after a heated appearance last week on Capitol Hill. Both Obama and Clinton batted away questions about future campaigns, but the joint interview – the president's first with anyone other than First Lady Michelle Obama – was only likely to increase the fascination with Clinton's future. "The president and I care deeply about what's going to happen for our ...
Obama, Nobel Peace prize winner doesn't want to cut $600 billion from the military ?.. The $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts that Barack Obama once promised to avert are looking increasingly likely to occur because of entrenched politics in Washington, threatening a shock to confidence in the US economy. Economists have long assumed that the so-called sequester - a budgetary mechanism passed in 2011 that takes effect on March 1 and slashes the Pentagon's budget by $600bn over 10 years while cutting discretionary spending for government programmes by another $600bn - would be replaced or reversed by Congress. Many saw a recent move by Republicans on Capitol Hill to extend the US borrowing authority as a sign of greater co-operation with the White House. But conservative lawmakers have recently made it clear that they were simply gearing up for another fight, and are prepared to take a hard line on the $1.2tn in cuts even amid objections from military hawks. "I think the sequester is going to happen, ...
The National Governors Association (NGA), founded in 1908 as the National Governors' Conference,[1] at the Conference of Governors; that conference was felt necessary by the Inland Waterways Commission the previous October, to provide both state and national views relating to practical questions dealing with natural resources utilization and management in the Progressive Era.[2] The NGA represents the governors of the fifty U.S. states and five U.S. territories (American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). It is funded primarily by state dues, federal grants and contracts, and private contributions.[3] NGA serves as a key public policy liaison between the state governments and the federal government. NGA provides governors and their senior staff members with services that range from representing states on Capitol Hill and at the White House when discussing federal issues to developing policy reports on state programs and hosting networking seminars for sta ...
A reminder from my friend Jay about the "untruths" told by our current Secretary of State: Watching Hillary Clinton prevaricate on Capitol Hill is just maddening. It seems many have forgotten what an accomplished liar she is. Here are a few reminders of her biggest whoppers: Chelsea was jogging around the Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. (She was in bed watching it on TV.) • Hillary was named after Sir Edmund Hillary. (She admitted she was wrong. He climbed Mt. Everest five years after her birth.) • She was under sniper fire in Bosnia. (A girl presented her with flowers at the foot of the ramp.) • She learned in The Wall Street Journal how to make a killing in the futures market. (It didn't cover the market back then.) • She didn't know about the FALN pardons. • She didn't know that her brothers were being paid to get pardons that Clinton granted. • Taking the White House gifts was a clerical error. • She didn't know that her staff would fire the travel office staff after she told them to do ...
Lobbyists of all stripes swarm President Obama’s gun-control proposals By Kevin Bogardus - 01-22-13 06:00 AM ET President Obama’s gun-control recommendations have created a lobbying free-for-all on Capitol Hill. Groups not typically associated with the debate over gun rights have taken a strong interest in the proposals that the White House put forward. Civil rights activists, mayors, psychiatrists, scientists and teachers are among those who plan to dispatch lobbyists to try and shape the debate. Some of the interested parties have little, if anything, to say about Obama’s headline-grabbing proposals on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Instead, they are focusing on some of the smaller elements of Obama’s plan that might have a better shot at passing Congress. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said the gun-control bill outlined by the president would touch so many areas of policy that it simply can’t be ignored. “This is something we have to keep our eyes on. If it was a st ...

By choosing White House chief of staff Jacob Lew as his new treasury secretary, Obama is bracing himself to battle congressional Republicans in 2013, not seeking bipartisan compromises with them. The Lew decision is only the latest indication of Obama’s eagerness to crush Republican opposition on Capitol Hill. Conspicuously absent since his reelection has been any talk of amicably bringing the sides together in Washington. People who have dealt with himon taxes and spending regard him as the most partisan, ideological, and uncompromising of Obama’s aides.

Defense sector braces for 'self-amputation' (Politico, 26 Dec 12) . Austin Wright or not, the defense industry is bracing for a bad decade. Contractors are hoarding cash. Top firms are eyeing potential mergers. And old alliances are cracking. Even senior Republicans on the House and Senate Armed Services Committees acknowledge a shrinking military is inevitable as the U.S. withdraws from Afghanistan after more than a decade of war. Chuck Hagel's rise to the top of President Barack Obama's shortlist to succeed Leon Panetta as Defense secretary is the latest sign the White House is preparing for a big drawdown - beyond the $487 billion reduction in Pentagon spending already on the table. Hagel, a former Republican senator from Nebraska, has said the Simpson-Bowles deficit-reduction plan should act as a starting point in negotiations to rein in the federal deficit. The plan, designed to produce a balanced budget by 2015, would require steep cuts in military spending, calling for an end to such big-ticket pro ...
White House officials said Thursday that President Barack Obama will not send a fiscal cliff measure to Capitol Hill, while Republicans insisted they were expecting more details on the president's proposal. An aide to Senate GOP leader Mitch Mcconnell, R-Kentucky, said the senator expected further details soon on what Obama and Democrats were proposing. A Senate Democratic leadership member also said that more details would be provided. Both sources spoke to CNN on condition of not being identified further. However, two White House officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the president was not sending a proposal to Congress. Such parsing of words and interpretations showed the high political sensitivity over how the fiscal cliff negotiations are being portrayed to the public. House leaders announced the chamber would reconvene on Sunday and could stay in session through January 2, before a new Congress gets sworn in on January 3.

Capitol Hill testimony has made clear the original CIA’s talking points on the Libya terror attacks were altered before U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice used them for a public explanation about what happened, so the next step is learn who changed them and why, Republican Rep.
Even in a town that rewards sharp elbows and brusque personalities, Rice has managed to make an impressive array of enemies — on Capitol Hill, in Foggy Bottom and abroad. Particularly in comparison with the other person often mentioned for the job, Sen. John Kerry, she can be a most undiplomatic diplomat, and there likely aren’t enough Republican or Democratic votes in the Senate to confirm her. Back when she was an assistant secretary of state during the Clinton administration, she appalled colleagues by flipping her middle finger at Richard Holbrooke during a meeting with senior staff at the State Department, according to witnesses. Colleagues talk of shouting matches and insults. Among those she has insulted is the woman she would replace at State. Rice was one of the first former Clinton administration officials to defect to Obama’s primary campaign against Hillary Clinton. Rice condemned Clinton’s Iraq and Iran positions, asking for an “explanation of how and why she got those critical judg ...
WELL DONE HILARY: No one in living memory. no other American has done more to improve America's battered image abroad and serve America's national interests globally with dignity than Hilary Clinton as Secretary of State in the last four years. George W Bush and his Republican friends wrecked America's image abroad in addition to ruining the economy at home. She picked up the pieces with her over 60,000 staff in embassies globally, many of them working in risky/ dangerous zones. She deserves appreciation from her compatriots irrespective of party loyalties. Not the derisive comments from armchair Republicans in Capitol Hill. The Benghazi debacle was not her fault. In fact she was closer to Ambassador Christopher Stevens than John Mccain and Lindsey Graham who are now making her a scape goat for political advantage. The whole world and indeed America know she did her very best for this great nation. Thank you Hilary. Should you decide to run for the White House in 2016, you will win by the grace of the Al ...
Bernie Sanders Real Americans: A packed hearing room on Capitol Hill was the scene of a summit meeting Thursday with seniors, the disabled and grassroots groups fighting with Sen. Bernie Sanders and others in Congress to protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid from budget cuts. "There are fair ways to reduce the $1 trillion federal deficit and $16 trillion national debt, but balancing the budget on the backs of the elderly, the sick, the children and the poor is not among them," Sanders said. "We are here today to send a very loud and very clear message to the leadership in the House, in the Senate and in the White House: Do not cut Social Security; do not cut Medicare, do not cut Medicaid and do not provide more tax breaks to the top 2 percent who are doing phenomenally well and in many cases have never had it so good."

*** The Puritans Gee wiz! General Petraeus has an exta-marital affair. I am shocked! What shocks me is that he has had to resign. Actually, why should anyone care except for his wife and close family? Eisenhower had a mistress and so did Johnson. Carter, Ford and Nixon were, probably, too dull. JFK and Clinton turned the White House into whorehouse. President Mitterand's funeral was attended by his wife, his mistress and his illegitimate daughter. The question is not whether a public official can keep it in his pants; the question is whether or not he is good at his job. In an era when priests have molested young boys by the thousands, when Senators chase young pages all over Capitol Hill and play footsie with whomever is in the next toilet stall and when the army turns a blind eye to sexual harassment and rape in the military, who is to cast the proverbial first stone? Let's stop with the hypocrisy.
President Obama’s post-election offer to sit down with vanquished GOP rival Mitt Romney has spurred talk of a possible White House role for Romney, a move that could help calm jitters on Wall Street and warm the partisan chill on Capitol Hill. Romney is still licking his wounds from the devastating.
The heads of Koch Industries, Westgate Resorts and ASG Software Solutions have all separately informed their employees of prosperity-undermining Obama economic politics. Left-wing groups have lambasted the executives for exercising their political free speech. But they have remained silent while the White House corruptocrats bribed federal defense contractors into delaying federally mandated layoff disclosures before the election. In a memo now being investigated on Capitol Hill, Obama promised to cover the legal fees of Lockheed Martin and other defense contractors if they ignored legal requirements to inform workers in advance about so-called sequestration cuts to the military’s budget scheduled to kick in next year.

With Congress still unable to iron out a cyber-security bill that both sides of the Legislative Branch can get behind, the White House has drafted an Executive Order that they will roll out if efforts on Capitol Hill remain unproductive.
Mitt Romney NOW flip-flops on 9/11! In 2007 he said: "We had planned to be in New York City on the 11th. That was the date originally set by our public relations people for announcing the names of our Olympic torchbearers. Our team had planned an elaborate press conference adjacent to the World Trade Center at Battery Park. But we delayed the announcement in New York to accommodate our meeting on Capitol Hill. Cindy Gillespie had scheduled a meeting with House and Senate appropriators in the U.S. Capitol building for 10:00 a.m. on the 11th. I met Cindy at 8:00 a.m. to put the finishing touches on our presentation. She had an office in the Ronald Regan building on Pennsylvania Avenue, just blocks from the White House. I was on the phone to Salt Lake City, doing a radio interview. The interviewer interrupted to say there were reports that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I hung up and turned on the small TV in the office. Like so many other Americans, I watched in horror as flames poured from the Nor ...

And Senator/Congressman if you are still in denial as to who is at fault here quit the Re-election Rhetorical Crap and do what we elected you to do in the first place. You have a job to do."DO IT!" Congress adjourned this week for its summer recess, leaving undone some serious legislative business that must be concluded after Labor Day. One key item on the agenda will be passage of a continuing resolution to fund the government into 2013, but House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and the White House recently struck a deal that averted a shutdown. Unfortunately, it just continues government bloat -- the Congressional Budget Office reported Tuesday that this year's federal deficit stands at $975 billion through July, meaning the deficit will have exceeded $1 trillion each year since 2009. The other big problem on Capitol Hill will be avoiding the scheduled mas ...
Despite insistence from the Obama Administration though, will the president follow through with plans to push CISPA off Capitol Hill? Last year, the White House went public with plans to veto the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 as opponents of the bill and its indefinite detention of American citizen provisions caused a massive backlash among critics. In its earlier form, the White House wrote to Congress that parts of the NDAA would bring a “dangerous and unprecedented challenge to critical Executive branch authority to determine when and where to prosecute detainees,” would constrain counterterrorism efforts and undermine national security. On November 17, 2011, the White House formally announced of the NDAA, “Any bill that challenges or constrains the President’s critical authorities to collect intelligence, incapacitate dangerous terrorists, and protect the Nation would prompt the President’s senior advisers to recommend a veto.” In regards to the military custody ...

Dear ANA Member and Colleague, For more than 20 years, the American Nurses Association has advocated for health care reform in the United States to provide universal, affordable health insurance and create a system that emphasizes prevention and wellness rather than "sick care." Today, we've earned a hard-fought victory with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act – for patients, nurses, and the nation. I am grateful for your support of ANA's efforts to create a health care system that works better for everyone. Read more about ANA's long-standing work to transform the health care system. We worked tirelessly to influence the law to ensure a larger role for nurses to provide patient-centered care and to make our fullest contribution to health care. Our voices were heard on Capitol Hill at rallies and congressional hearings, and at the White House. ANA members' activism contributed to the law's enactment. I'm extremely proud of us for making a huge difference for our patients ...

The ruinously incompetent mega-Leftist sitting in the White House intends to cut defense spending to levels far below what his own Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said was safe ... repeat: said was SAFE, and in no uncertain terms. Why would this wretched, stinking fart of a president do such a thing? I can't say for sure, but I suspect it has something to do with Panetta's interesting exchange while testifying on Capitol Hill recently, if you saw it, where he seemed to suggest America will be delegating its decisions in international matters to the U.N., in effect bypassing the U.S. Congress, and by extension, the People. The statement did not go over well, and the whole thing had me watching with brow raised. Because, really, that is actually a helluva thing to say. Barack Obama DOES INDEED intend for America to be one of many powers, deferential to a centralized global authority - at least to a major degree. Now, if you think such to be America's rightful destiny, then by all means, support these t ...
