Even with the rain, a good time was had by all, last Friday, June 7, at Umbrella of the Capital District art auction, “Art of the Umbrella”. Artists from throughout the Capital Region have donated eclectic works of art to be auctioned in support of the organization’s mission of helping senior citizens to live safely and comfortably in their own homes. The amazing MC and truly very funny auctioneer, Leesa Perazzo, kept things lively and fast paced while introducing the auction pieces, which included painting, sculpture, mixed media, jewelry, photography and, of course, a few hand decorated Umbrellas. The marvelous pastry reception was a display of donated delights from local small business, Portable Patisserie, Niskayuna, Edible Arrangements, Albany, R&G Cheese Makers, Cohoes, It is Made By Linda, Schenectady, Jacky Norman, Niskayuna. Support from Homestead Funding, Zone5, Albany Center Gallery and Urban Initiatives Group also contributed to the events success. Guests had the opportunity to vote for ...

The Capital Region Delegation is Holding and Education Forum This Week on Wednesday Afternoon from 3-5pm at the LOB Room 711A. Please read on for further information that might be of interest to you. Accountability in education is essential and testing is one measurement of student success. During this legislative session, however, state legislators have heard from parents, teachers, and school administrators about the strain of increased testing and related state federal mandates. Concerns range from the loss of instructional time for students as s result of hours of testing, the effects on children’s emotional health from excessive testing, to the added costs of testing and other mandates at a time when school districts’ budgets and valuable programs are being cut. To explore these concerns, Capital Region state legislators are hosting a local forum entitled: K-12 Education at a Crossroads: A Forum on the Impacts of Testing and Mandates. Legislators have invited members from urban, rural, and suburb ...

Its funny when an American thinks that just because I'm from the Philippines, I came from a mountain/Amazon woman/uncivilized/uneducated. Please don't stereotype and yes I know the risk of being an alien in another country & I know I will always have that persecution. But b/c now that you are reading this stauts, you now know right? Right! :) I'm a quiet type of person because I feel like I don't have to explain myself all the time (only when someone asks me). But for the sake of untangling confusion & clarification here's a shortened summary: I grew up all my life in Metro Manila (Philippine's Capital Region), specifically Quezon City. I started my education when I was 5 at Lighthouse Christian Academy then my 1st to 3rd gradeschool at People of Grace Christian School. I then had my 4th to 6th grade at Gospel Light Christian Academy. Then I graduated gradeschool at the age of 12 then moved on to my public high school Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School. Graduated at age 16 and moved on to college. I took ...

Chilly (But Not For Long) - Mar 7, 2013 It's COLD in NE Alberta. Wind chill near -30 this morning in Fort McMurray (mid -20s in Cold Lake/Bonnyville areas). Fort Chipewyan hit a TEMPERATURE of -37 with a wind chill of -48 at 5am! The coldest air really hasn't sunk as far SW as we thought it might, and it looks like it WILL avoid the Capital Region. That's not to say it's going to be warm today. There'll be a chill in the air, especially with a bit of a breeze. But, we'll be a bit warmer than earlier forecasts were calling for. As for that storm system that hit southern Alberta yesterday. It continues to push off to the east & (as expected) has mostly missed Edmonton. There are a few flurries this morning in areas just south of the city, but nothing significant. However, check on highway conditions if you're heading into southern parts of the province today. Conditions are highly variable this morning with some areas still seeing accumulating snow. After today, the sun returns & so does some warm air. Th . ...

GLENVILLE - Sliced and shredded to be sent to the scrap yard. That's what's become of doomed Turboliners that have been rusting away in a Glenville industrial park. Trains the state purchased in the late 1990s for 70 million dollars, that finally sold for just 420,000 for recycling. "I'm 25 years old so my taxes probably weren't wasted on this project but my parents and before that were," said Ryen VanHall, Vice President at Metro Metal Recycling, a Watervliet salvage company that purchased the locomatives. N.H. Kelman Scrap of Cohoes bought the engines. Other parts were auctioned off. It all started with the dream of high speed rail from New York City to the Capital Region. Governor George Pataki hailed the purchase of seven Turboliners from Amtrak, with their combination diesel electric engines. "It was an idea that somehow, someday, Schenectady County that used to light and pull the world would be able to do it again," said Pataki in August of 2000. But the project was doomed. Here is something I found this morning on yelp.com.very interesting read ! I am not only a copycat, but my product makes them sick ...LOL. Well.do my REAL customers agree ? Go write us a review on yelp and tell the capital region the REAL DEAL about Fluffalicious !!! Thanks to all who write a REAL review today !! xoxoxoxo 3 reviews Ryan Z. Albany, NY 2/12/2013 Fluffalicious does nothing but copy some of the other, more successful, bakeries in the Capital Region... Cake is dry and buttercream very unappealing. I've tried their cupcakes multiple times, however all three times I've gotten terribly sick. Their cupcakes are just so heavy! And their buttercream is just ick! It's got almost a greasy consistency to it... I heard it's because they use animal shortening instead of butter in their buttercream... And to top it all of, after hearing about the way the owner treats her friends, family, and customers, I'm definitely not going here any more.

Colder Tonight/Thursday; Snow Chances increase During Friday A cold front moving through the area and Great Lakes moisture brought clouds and a few flurries to the area ther first part of the day with temperatures in the low 30s in the Capital Region. Most areas will see gradually decreasing clouds and a chilly wind with flurries tapering this afternoon as temps slowly drop off. High pressure will give us mainly clear skies and temps dropping to below zero in parts of the North Country to the single digits to near 10 most places overnight The high gives way to an approaching system from the west with increasing clouds Thursday and maybe some light snow or flurries, mainly north and west by Thursday night. Friday a low on the mid Atlantic coast will develop as well, with increasing snow to our south. The coastal low will be the dominant system by late Friday and Friday night with snow spreading northward from the coast later Friday into early Saturday. New York State and Albany, NY - Capital Region in the Star Trek future. I was recently going through - Federation - The First 150 Years by David A. Goodman. In Enterprise, we learn - somewhat indirectly - Jonathan Archer was born in the Upstate New York area. In his book, David Goodman narrows it down to the Albany, New York area. Jonathan Archer's father - Henry - developer of the Warp 5 Engine went to SUNY - Albany, taught there, and was on staff there. The engineering folks at SUNY Albany, probably other tech related areas there - had a hand in the development in the Warp 5 engine. Zephram Cochrane met with the Archers in their home in Albany to entice Henry Archer to join him in further developing Warp drive. We better get cracking.

For centuries many sailors have spoken of stories, legends, and myths about Cape Horn’s dark pinnacles of black rock at the end of the world. The most memorable of these was Charles Darwin, a naturalist who traveled with Robert Fitz Roy aboard the Beagle to explore the region in 1832.   In his memoirs, that led him to write his famous theory on the Origen of Species, Darwin wrote about his passage by Cape Horn:   December 21.-  The Beagle got under way: and on the succeeding day, favoured to an uncommon degree by a fine easterly breeze, we closed in with the Barnevelts,  and running past Cape Deceit  with its stony peaks, about three o'clock doubled the weather-beaten Cape Horn. The evening was calm and bright, and we enjoyed a fine view of the surrounding isles. Cape Horn, however, demanded his tribute, and before night sent us a gale of wind directly in our teeth. We stood out to sea, and on the second day again made the land, when we saw on our weather-bow this notorious promontory in its p ...

A few minutes ... sharing warm boyhood memories ... with Andy Rooney! By Ann Hauprich The wit and wisdom of Andy Rooney have earned him legions of fans across the nation and around the world. As the author of several bestselling books, an award-winning syndicated newspaper column and a popular spot on CBS TV's 60 Minutes, his face and voice rank among the most familiar of our times. Lesser known -- but equally fascinating -- is the part of Rooney's life that included more than a few minutes of boyhood adventures in the greater Saratoga/Capital Region. For example, he doubts there's anyone alive who knew the barn behind 23 Church Avenue in Ballston Spa as well as young Andy Rooney. The Church Avenue house and barn originally belonged to his paternal grandparents (Charles P. Rooney of England and Annie Aitken Rooney of Portobello, Scotland) who acquired the property in 1905 when Rooney's father, Walter Scott Rooney, was in his late teens. Walter and his two older brothers, Fred and Bill, had spent their ear ...

Winter's Back - Jan 21, 2013 A cold & snowy weekend and there's more where that came from. It won't be AS cold as Sunday, but daytime highs look like they'll be stuck in the -10 to -15 range most of this week. MUCH warmer air will move into the foothills & southern Alberta, but it won't drift very far east. As for snow, the front will be awfully close to Edmonton today. However, it APPEARS the heavier pockets of snow will be just N & E of the city (10cm psbl). IN the city, about 5cm looks likely (but it will all depend on where the heavier bands of snow develop & that's still a bit of an unknown). The snow should taper off a bit later today, tonight & tomorrow. Another system rolls through on Wednesday that could bring several cm to the Capital Region (especially late in the day Wed). If it was a rally for welfare benefits or abortion rights there would have been above the fold photos and story of the Rally. What I am certain is the largest group ever to peacefully assembly at the Capitol, and we are mentioned on the front of the capital region section. 2nd Amendment Rights are greater than the Capital Region!

"Dracula" at Curtain Call Theatre is going to great lengths to satisfy your demand. It's a very spooky evening with many, many scenes and pictures to take in that should satisfy and vampiriphile. Personally, the Tea Party scares me more but I had a very good time watching THIS CAST. Once again Capital Region actors make the the visit to the theatre more than worthwhile but essential. The Best Cast...this month. Kris Anderson, Kevin Gardner, Ian LaChance, Dana Goodknight, Beth Pietrangelo, Pat Rooney, McKinley Fallon, Megan Miller, Jenna Noble.. I probably missed someone...WOW!
"RENT: School Edition" by C-R Kids at Cohoes Music Hall was fantastic! If you need to renew your faith in possibilities in Capital Region theatre check out next weeks cast. It's like the all-stars of the Capital Region and the dozens of schools they come from. I saw the cast headed by Jacob Shipley and Sara Donellan as Roger and Mimi and they were extraordinary with the whole cast shining. It will do your heart good. Man, I hope some of these kids choose to stay or return to the Capital Region.
Hey, mom friends in the Capital Region - did you know that on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month, there is a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group that meets at Temple Baptist Church? While your kiddos are lovingly cared for by screened volunteers - we have the opportunity to sit, have a HOT cup of coffee (come on now!), and listen to wonderful, encouraging speakers on many topics that we deal with as wives and moms. I'd like to invite you to our next meeting on Friday, January 18 from 9:15-11:30. We will have Karen Smith come to speak again (those who heard her last year, KNOW she was AMAZING!). She is the Dean of Women's Studies at Word Of Life and she is going to speaking on "INSECURITIES." Don't we all deal with those? I do on a daily basis!! Whether its a news article, blog, or even well meaning friends - we are bombarded constantly how we should be as a wife and mom. I bet (wait, I know!), that 99% of that can be discarded from our life, and we can be free of the guilt and INSECURITIES! Come check M ...

Cold Making A Comeback - Dec 17, 2012 After a mild weekend (Highs of -7 Sat & -4 Sun) , cooler air is set to return to the Capital Region. Today's high of -8 will likely be the warmest we get for the rest of the week. MAYBE even the rest of the month. AND...it's not even going to FEEL like -8 today. (more like -15 to -20 thanks to wind chill.) More on the tumbling temperature in a moment. Haven't had any snow for a few days, so I guess we're due. A low pressure system is set to push into southern Alberta today. A trough will stretch north from that system & we'll get some snow in Edmonton tonight. 2-5cm looks likely for Edmonton. Heaviest snow (5-10cm by Tuesday morning) is expected to hit the Peace Country & areas SE into the Hinton/Edson region. East-central & Northeast Alberta may get a few flurries, but no accumulating snow. After tonight, there's another chance of snow late Thursday into Friday. That could be a significant snow-maker for parts of the province too. Ok...back to the cooldown: Daytim .. ...

Ponty Chadha: From snack seller to liquor tycoon New Delhi, Nov 17 (IANS) From selling snacks by the roadside to owning a business empire worth around Rs.8,000 crore, Ponty Chadha's was a real rags to riches story. Gurdeep Singh Chadha alias Ponty Chadha, who was born in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, used to sell snacks with his father in front of a liquor shop as a boy. Using his political clout, he soon ruled over the liquor business in Uttar Pradesh and his corporate interests also spanned across real estate, sugar, film production and exhibition. In September this year, his Wave Group bought the Delhi franchise of Hockey India League that is set to make its debut next year. Chadha, 55, who was killed here in a family feud with his brother Saturday, was granted the sole distributorship for liquor in Uttar Pradesh under the Mayawati regime in 2009. He is alleged to have bought liquor at low prices and sold it at exorbitant rates. Along with his brothers, Ponty managed the Chadha Group, which was consolida ...

Dapitan City—A bemedalled lady archer did what was expected of her while a long jumper, who claimed to know nothing about pressure, helped Region 7 bounce back from a listless first day performance in the 2001 Palarong Pambansa here. Not to be outdone was the secondary girls tennis team, which likewise delivered big-time as Region 7 finally got their campaign going by hauling four gold medals yesterday after Monday’s zero harvest. Leading the medal haul for Region 7 was Dumaguete’s Crizabelle Marie Merto, who was steady as ever as she delivered the first two golds for the region by winning the 30-meter and 40m event in secondary girls archery. It was a repeat performance for Merto, who also dominated the two events in last year’s Palaro held in Tarlac. Kit Petellero, on the other hand, fell short in the elementary division triple jump contest early in the day, where he settled for silver. He more than made up for that narrow loss in the afternoon games by snatching the gold medal of the long jump ...

I wrote an article on the issue of Tamil grievances and the need for devolution of power on linguistic basis. Here it is Why devolution of power should be on linguistic basis by R.M.B Senanayake Sinhala nationalists who deny that the Tamils have any grievances are now campaigning for the abolition of the Provincial Councils under the 13th Amendment. But S.W.R.D the western educated liberal who introduced the Sinhala Only Law realized that an injustice was done to the Tamil people for it was not only an instrument to discriminate against Tamils in State employment but also to force them to deal with the State and its agencies only in Sinhala which the large majority of Tamil people did not know. How could the Tamil people give voice to their problems to the powers that be unless they learn Sinhala for, given the Sinhala as the only medium of education, future political leaders would know only Sinhala. ? Even then the Tamil people suspected rightly that the Sinhalese wanted to exercise power only for thei .. ...

The next largest age group of drinkers comes from ages 29-35 comprising at least 14.38%. In the Visayas it's 21.5% and those in Mindanao at 19.6%. When analyzed by region, the National Capital Region (at 17%), Region 4A (at 15% ...

Haryana is a state in India. Constituted in 1966, it is one of two newly created states carved out of the greater Punjab province as a means of creating a stronger national identity. It has been a part of the Kuru region in North India. The name Haryana is found mentioned in the 12th century AD by the apabhramsha writer Vibudh Shridhar (VS 1189-1230). It is bordered by Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the north, and by Rajasthan to the west and south. The river Yamuna defines its eastern border with Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Haryana also surrounds Delhi on three sides, forming the northern, western and southern borders of Delhi. Consequently, a large area of Haryana is included in the National Capital Region. The capital of the state is Chandigarh which is administered as a union territory and is also the capital of Punjab. Sites in Haryana were part of the Indus Valley and Vedic Civilizations. Several decisive battles were fought in the area, which shaped much of the history of India. These include th ...

Recto gets slur from both sides of sin tax debate Written by Ed Velasco Monday, 15 October 2012 00:00 font size Print Be the first to comment! Rate this item 1 2 3 4 5 (2 votes) The verbal assaults from private groups against Sen. Ralph Recto over the supposed watered-down sin tax reforms bill he sponsored continued yesterday with some calling for his resignation as chairman of the Senate ways and means committee. The Action for Economic Reforms (AER) said Recto should resign as chairman of the Senate committee in the wake of Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares’s strong statement accusing Recto of betraying the Aquino administration, The People’s Coalition Against Regressive Taxation (PCART), which is on the other end of the debate that sought the junking of the excise tax measure, said the report of Recto’s committee on the excise tax was “a victory of the feuding factions of the elite and not the ordinary Filipinos because it fell short to their call for the total scrapping of the anti-p ...

Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi, had bought as many as 41 premium apartments from DLF but subsequently sold most of them at a profit. All the apartments were acquired by companies promoted by him, including Sky Light Hospitality- which had dealings with DLF- by paying a minimum booking amount, with the exception of a luxury pad in the picturesque Aralias, for which he paid the entire sum of Rs 11.9 crore upfront. Vadra, whose dealings with India's biggest real estate firm has come under the lens in the past ten days, booked apartments in three premium projects: Aralias and Magnolias in Gurgaon and Capital Greens in Moti Nagar in Delhi. He used a part of the Rs 58-crore advance paid by DLF (for purchasing a 3.5-acre plot from him in Gurgaon) for booking these flats. Most of these apartments were bought for the purpose of trading as Vadra sold around 38 of these 41 apartments subsequently, said a DLF executive. Hey Chatham soccer fans, here's a recap of yesterday's varsity game (from Capital Region Soccer. Com). Tomorrow starts a big final week of regular season play: Chatham squared-off against Taconic Hills on the Panther's home ground yesterday afternoon in front of a large partisan home-coming weekend crowd. For the Panther's, who entered the contest second in the conference table, it was another must-win game to keep their championship hopes alive. This was the first meeting between clubs this season, as the corresponding game at Taconic Hill's has been twice cancelled because of inclement weather. Chatham got off to a strong start and began generating attacking chances out of the midfield from the opening kick-off. Using a combination of quick-passing and aggressive attacking runs, the Panther's had T-Hills chasing the game. On the less-frequent occasions that T-Hills had offensive possession, Chatham's stingy back four (Baker, Clifford, Veranasi, Shillinger-Brokaw, Hutchson) kept the ball to the outside, ...

Telegraph-Journal - October 13 RESIDENT HAPPY TO SEE EFFORT TO SAVE RECORDS In the days after the spring flood closed portions of the Perth-Andover hospital and forced hundreds of citizens from their homes and businesses, a decision was made to switch from a paper-based records system to an electronic records system at the hospital, which would allow medical professionals throughout the facility to access, and update, a patient’s medical file through a computerized system. These records give doctors, nurses, specialists and other allied health professionals easier access to a patient’s medical files, ensuring they have a standardized and up-to-date picture of the patient’s health, putting data about past interventions and trends at the professionals fingertips.
