Two remarkable books. In the past several weeks, I have read two quite remarkable books (and several others that were not quite so remarkable). The first was Marton, Kati (2012). Paris: A Love Story. I heard her interviewed on CBC and sought out the book. Among many other things, she was the third wife of Peter Jennings, the Canadian who ended up working for many years as the anchor on ABC World News Tonight. That prompted me to open up Peter Jennings: A Reporter's Life, which is a fascinating collection of memories of people who knew Jennings compiled after his death from lung cancer in 2005. A lot of that book examines the nature of the news business. On page 288, ABC correspondent Martha Raddatz is quoted as saying "I worry about our business. Part of what I worry about is that reporters no longer get to learn, get to go, get to see with their own eyes. That's what you can't replace." In 1974, I had the good fortune to be hired as a reporter for a small daily newspaper called the Cape Breton Post, in . ...

So this is how Verna’s day went after she wrote an article about me in the Cape Breton Post. People either love me or they hate me – and I’m ok with that. This isn’t Verna’s fight, it’s mine. I spoke my mind and it’s an opinion that is debatable either way – and trust me, I’m ok with that as well. What I don’t like is when people are assuming that they know me or anything about my life just because I live in the richest province in the country. Someone even commented that I must drive a jacked up truck and own some ATV’s because I defended the town I live in. I don’t. I drive a SUV and my comments aren’t made from “behind the dollar” like this jerk claims. I just spent the last 3 years as a single mother in Fort McMurray who shamelessly needed to depend on a divorce agreement and financial support from my ex-husband to survive here. I do not work at site and my in-town wages are not even comparable to those that do. But I LOVE my job and the gals I work with so I make ends me ...

Animal lovers this is a request for help. If it is only $5 please donate to the SPCA Cape Breton Branch. There is NO yes NO funding for cats in the CBRM so the SPCA Cape Breton Branch can only help cats with public donations. Those donations are very few as of late. Without people to support the effort at the SPCA Cape Breton Branch to help cats then they will not be able to continue to hold as many cats in the building as they would like. They must have sufficent medical supplies for these and animals and be able to pay enough staff to take care of MANY cats. Please they need you. It is the only shelter for the homeless animals of Cape Breton and if it is gone what will the animals do. Think about this please and pass this message on to your friends and family. This is just not a general post but something to make everyone aware. Thank you

The Legal Enrichment and Decisionmaking (LEAD) initiative is offered through the federal Justice Department and operates from the UNIA office in Glace Bay and from the Whitney Pier Youth Centre. According to association board member Al Moore, the program provides students in Grade 5 to Grade 8 the opportunity to work with individuals and groups in positions of authority to gain the knowledge they will need to make choices that will help them avoid conflict with the law. “As a cultural museum, educational centre and employment outreach organization, we are very busy organizing programs, providing assistance with employment and working with the community to foster a better understan . ...

The heroism which occurred underground I didn't much write about. Gas in mine was the main cause of death. All Canada was tuned into the radio and also TV as this drama unfolded in the town of Springhill, Nova Scotia in the No. 4 mine. It's Hard for The Wife of a Coal Miner to Smile I was a young boy nearly ten years old in the year 1956 Pictures in the Cape Breton Post in my mind didn't stick But I know there were photos and articles for a long time Of the coal mining disaster down in the Springhill mine. It was there in November that it happened underground The rake broke loose sending six coal cars crashing down The electric cable was crushed, followed by an explosion The blast reached the surface, a bluish flame rose then. The bankhead building which covered the mine entrance Crumbled and a tower of fire 200 feet skyward was sent Sirens cried out loud and draegermen rushed to the site While families hoped and prayed through the fateful night. Coal miners numbering 30 died underground in that mine On t ...
