Gill, Stephen. American Hegemony and the Trilateral Commission. New York: Cambridge University Press, 1991. 304 pages. In recent years the guardians of correct thinking on the U.S. left decided that any discussion of transnational elites in connection with high-finance and trade is just another version of those old right-wing conspiracy theories about Jewish bankers. If you suspect that real issues are involved -- particularly now that CFR/Trilateralist/Bilderberger Bill Clinton was slipped into the White House while we weren't looking -- you have to follow the issue by reading right-wing literature. But there's one progressive scholar who still takes it seriously. Stephen Gill, a professor of political science at York University in Toronto, interviewed 100 of the 325 Trilateral members. Then he applied a thick spread of Gramscian analysis to show that: 1) American power has NOT declined, rather it has just taken on a more internationalist outlook as capital becomes more mobile; 2) transnational capitalis ...
New Book - Putin's Kleptocracy - WSJ Review Book Review: 'Putin's Kleptocracy' by Karen Dawisha Every major business that sprouted up in Russia in the early 1990s had the help of former KGB officers—and their money. By ANNA ARUTUNYAN Sept. 30, 2014 7:16 p.m. ET1 COMMENTS Systemic embezzlement, skimming, fraud and personal enrichment through power—these have long been assumed about Vladimir Putin's inner circle, but they have not been comprehensively laid out until now. Karen Dawisha's book made headlines in April, five months before it was published, when Cambridge University Press backed out of publication in Britain, fearing English libel laws. "Putin's Kleptocracy: Who Owns Russia?" delivers precisely the kind of meticulously researched evidence one would hope for in a work preceded by such controversy. The book begins in the late 1980s with revelations about the Communist Party's accumulation of currency accounts and the KGB's role in taking control of that money as the Soviet Union collapsed. Ms. ...

In addition, pp. 282 - 300: these regiments were supported by 30,000 militia, and 60,000 - 70,000 armed Protestant yeomanry; 12,000 - 17,000 police augmented the force. Confusion, Crisis & Politics “Crises make and break political careers, shake bureaucratic pecking orders and shape organizational destinies. Crises fix the spotlight on those who govern. Heroes and villains emerge with a speed and intensity quite unknown to “politics as usual.” Many seasoned policy makers understand this catalytic momentum in crises. They may talk about national unity and the need for consensus in the face of shared predicaments, but this reflects only part of their reasoning. Their other calculus, less visible to the public, concerns contested issues, dilemmas of responsibility and accountability, of avoiding blame and claiming credit.” © Cambridge University Press, The Politics of Crisis Management: Public Leadership under Pressure Arjen Boin, Paul’t Hart, Eric Stern and Bengt Sundelius “Dissing Obama’s speeches is, at best, a risky strategy. Hard-Headed Advice for Aspiring Writers (Part 1) By Richard Nordquist If you're a promising young writer looking for words of praise, comfort, and encouragement, you'll have to look elsewhere. These writers mean business. • Fay Weldon on Standing Alone [Be] wary of anyone who tries to teach you to write. Do it yourself. Stand alone. You will never be better than your own judgment, and you will never be satisfied with what you do. (Fay Weldon, Letters to Alice: On First Reading Jane Austen. Cambridge University Press, 1998) • John Gardner on Practicing What this means, in practical terms for the student writer, is that in order to achieve mastery he must read widely and deeply and must write not just carefully but continually, thoughtfully assessing and reassessing what he writes, because practice, for the writer as for the concert pianist, is the heart of the matter. (John Gardner, The Art of Fiction: Notes on Craft for Young Writers. Alfred A. Knopf, 1984) • Ellen Gilchrist on Writing Your Heart Ou ...

Biblical inaccuracy 1 of 5. For many, the Christian-Muslim debate revolves around the issue of biblical inaccuracy. I am one of many authors who have addressed this topic in everything from brief pamphlets to full-length books. For the purpose of this article, however, I would like to focus on just one scriptural example – a verse that brings to light many of the pertinent issues and arguments. Evangelical Christians—as the keystone of their religion— showcase John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” This is the verse you see promoted on everything from Tim Tebow’s eyeblack to t-shirts, bumper stickers and, most famously, placards at sporting and other public events. What is the charm of John 3:16? Well, Evangelical Christians want us to believe this verse promises humankind an effortless salvation, based solely upon Christian belief – what they call redemption by faith. But as we ...
On Comprehending Religion Jason Neal 19 June 2014 Religion can be a difficult concept to define as the understanding of the term rests on no single definition. Owing to this difficulty is that the word itself is useless without context. In other words, religion is a concept that cannot be understood on its own, it must be defined within a cultural framework, and thus it is really a cultural-religious term that is separate in definition for every culture. Cultures across the globe have attempted to explain the various phenomenon seen within the natural world, making assumptions and conclusions based on their knowledge of the environment around them and the customs and concepts that have been restricted to their particular places in both time and location. If an individual insists upon a universal definition, viewing it as “… an extension of the field of people’s social relationships beyond the confines of purely human society” would have to suffice (Horton 1994). Obviously though, ...

State of the society When I first began English research expected creative writing. I expected to be able to release the pinned up emotions and express what I was feeling inside. In my essay on myths vs. Facts it seemed straight forward enough to me that "If its factual its reality and if its fiction its imagination. Aspiring Writers: This is a very well done piece. But what is he actually saying? This style works for scholarly discourse but doesn't make it for the average reader. Ask yourself, who is your audience? Orientalism, Palestinian Nationalism, and Israeli Repression IBRAHIM GABR, JUN 20 2014 This essay examines the prospects of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process on the basis of the ideological structures of Palestinian Nationalism, Orientalism, and Zionism. Hypothesizing that different variants of nationalism bear witness to differing degrees of Orientalism, the essay thus proposes that the successes of Palestinian nationalism, in the context of the peace process, are dramatically complicated by the variations in Orientalism which occur between different forms of Zionism. On this basis, the essay argues in favor of the thesis that, because it tends to contain lower levels of Orientalism, a Labor Zionism is far more amenable to peace than either Religious or Nationalist versions of this Israeli politico-re ...

IMPORTANCE OF DICTIONARY Using a dictionary will help you understand the learning material and your assignment questions. This is very important because if you misinterpret even one word in an assignment, you risk getting the answer wrong. choose the most appropriate words so that your writing is clear, interesting and reads well. use words correctly so that you say what you mean and your writing is easy to understand. spell words correctly – incorrect spelling may be penalised in assignments, and it certainly gives a bad impression. build your vocabulary - looking up a word not only helps you understand and use that word but the process of looking it up helps fix the word in your memory. IMPORTANCE OF LANGUAGE TO DICTIONARY 1 a body of words and the systems for their use common to a people who are of the same community or nation, the same geographical area, or the same cultural tradition: the two languages of Belgium; a Bantu language; the French language; the Yiddish language. 2. communication by voic ...
I would highly recommend the following book: The Systems View of Life: A Unifying Vision (2014) Capra F and Luisi PL Cambridge University Press "The triology of life. The organic, living structure interacts with the environment via a cognition sensorium, which is a specific product of its development and evolution. It does not make sense to consider each of these three domains (autopoietic unit, cognition, environment) as independent of one another. Life is the synergy of the three domains, as the notion of "embodied mind" implies." Please see Figure 7.5 on page 142. Cheers! Vinod

The following is my comment on a post by Mr. Phons Ang: It is good that a short history of the so-called “nine-dotted line,” “nine-dash line,” or “U-shaped line” is included in the Wikipedia article (“Nine-dotted line”). Although academics may frown on the practice, the truth is many non-experts rely on Wikipedia to get at least a basic introduction to a topic of interest. Whenever the territorial disputes in the South China Sea are discussed in Philippine media (by reporters, columnists, or TV commentators), the focus is always on the “legality” and “legitimacy” of the Philippine claim. As these people understand it, the Philippines has a rightful claim to Scarborough Shoal and to the portion of the Spratly Islands it calls “Kalayaan Islands” because these lie within its 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone or EEZ, as provided by the “UNCLOS.” It is true that the United Nations Law of the Sea Convention or LOSC allows a coastal state to claim an EEZ up to 200 ...

Thank you to my friend Professor Anthony Esolen of Providence College for referencing Fr. Pierre Gassendi's name to me. Quote from "The Cambridge Companion to Darwin." "Fr. Pierre Gassendi (1592-1655) committed himself almost exclusively to the Epicurean, atomist tradition. However, Roman Catholic Christian that he was, he invoked the God of his creed for the originations that had no sanction among ancient atomists. Matter for Gassendi owed its first existence and original properties to God, who created matter from nothing. Furthermore, in Gassendi's cosmogony, the world was ordered by Him and not from any fortuitous concourse of atoms. Where Lucretius had seminal antecedents for animals and plants arising fortuitously, Gassendi had such SEEDS ARISING FROM GOD'S POWER, GOODNESS AND WISDOM. Gassendi shows how the ATOMIST TRADITION in cosmogony could be totally TRANSFORMED MONOTHEISTICALLY, so that God becomes the ultimate ORIGIN OF SPECIES and individuals, even as atoms are his material and his instruments ...
Keith L. Moore, Ph.D., F.I.A.C. Professor of Anatomy and Chairman of the Department, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Human beings have always been interested in where they came from and how they developed before birth. We know from the earliest records that primitive peoples realized that the birth of a baby was the sequel to sexual union or intercourse. However, for many centuries the idea about human prenatal development were based on speculation and mysticism. The absence of knowledge about embryological processes and the dominating influence of superstition resulted in a non-scientific approach to human development. As far was we know, Aristotle wrote the first embryology book in the 4th century BC. In it he recorded some observations on comparative embryology, especially on the general progress of the developing chick. He promoted, however, the incorrect idea that the human embryo developed from a formless mass that resulted from the union of the semen with the m ...

Democracy and Coercive Diplomacy. Kenneth A. Schultz Publisher: Cambridge University Press 2001 324 Pages ,PDF, 1 MB Schultz explores the effects of democratic politics on coercive diplomacy. He argues that open political competition between government and opposition parties influences threats in international crises, how rival states interpret those threats, and whether or not crises can be settled short of war. Compared to their nondemocratic counterparts, democracies make threats more selectively, but those they do make are more likely to be successful--that is, to gain a favorable outcome without war. Schultz uses game-theoretic models and tests the resulting hypothesis using both statistical analyses and historical case studies.

Abstract of the talk: Colonialism, colonial state and Nationalism in India: A review of historiography Azizul Rasel General Education Department University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh Abstract Colonialism in India and elsewhere not only subjugated, mutilated and killed people but since the very inception of colonialism, it also tried to capture the culture and history of the colonized country. Indeed, appropriation and distortion of history was an essential part for the colonizers to justify colonialism. However, colonies were not a bed of roses for the colonizers. Challenges and tensions were common features in the colonial states. The empire had to employ much of its effort to subjugate the anti-colonial and nationalist movements. There is a longstanding debate on the natur ...
i read of an interesting reference to india in greek mythology in the book 'the making of roman india' by grant parker published by cambridge university press... to quote the relevant passages verbatim- //Philosophy in its personified form tells her father Zeus of the ills she has suffered at the hands of bogus philosophers, who turn out to be the Cynics. Recalling her reception by humans after being sent by Zeus, Philosophy has this to say: “When I darted off, father, I did not head directly for the Greeks; but, since it seemed to me the harder part of my task to educate and teach foreigners, I resolved to do that first… Heading initially for the Indians, the most populous nation in existence, I had no trouble in persuading them to descend from their elephants and converse with me. As a result the Brahmans, an entire tribe bordering on the Nechraei and the Oxudracae, are all recruited under my command: they not only live in accordance with my tenets, revered by all their neighbours, but die a spectac ...

Alessandro de’ Medici, first Duke of Florence (1510–1537) Alessandro de’ Medici, called “Il Moro” (“The Moor”), was born in the Italian city of Urbino in 1510. His mother was an African slave named Simonetta who had been freed. Alessandro’s paternity is uncertain. Most sources name Lorenzo de’ Medici, ruler of Urbino. But Alessandro might also have been the son of Pope Clement VII, the brother of Lorenzo II who became the head of the Medici family after Lorenzo’s death. Clement VII chose the nineteen-year-old Alessandro to become the first Duke of Florence in 1529. Pope Clement at that time was at odds not only with the Florentines who had driven out the Medici family in 1497, but also with the emperor Charles V. To solidify the allegiance that the papacy owed to the Holy Roman Empire, Alessandro was named Duke of Florence and promised the emperor’s daughter Margaret. With the help of Charles V, Clement could restore the rule of the Medici family in Florence in 1530 and make Alessan ...

In recent years, much has been said about the post-modernist claims about science to the effect that science is just another form of raw power, tricked out in special claims for truth-seeking and objectivity that really have no basis in fact. Science, we are told, is no better than any other undertaking. These ideas anger many scientists, and they anger me. But recent events have made me wonder if they are correct. We can take as an example the scientific reception accorded a Danish statistician, Bjorn Lomborg, who wrote a book called The Skeptical Environmentalist...The scientific community responded in a way that can only be described as disgraceful. In professional literature, it was complained he had no standing because he was not an earth scientist. His publisher, Cambridge University Press, was attacked with cries that the editor should be fired, and that all right-thinking scientists should shun the press... But what are scientists doing attacking a press? Is this the new McCarthyism-coming from sc ...
- Marguerite Deslauriers, Pierre Destrée, "The Cambridge Companion to Aristotle's Politics" Publisher: Cambridge University Press (29 Aug 2013) One of the most influential works in the history of political theory, Aristotle's Politics is a treatise in practical philosophy, intended to inform legislators and to create the conditions for virtuous and self-sufficient lives for the citizens of a state. In this Companion, distinguished scholars offer new perspectives on the work and its themes. After an opening exploration of the relation between Aristotle's ethics and his politics, the central chapters follow the sequence of the eight books of the Politics, taking up questions such as the role of reason in legitimizing rule, the common good, justice, slavery, private property, citizenship, democracy and deliberation, unity, conflict, law and authority, and education. The closing chapters discuss the interaction between Aristotle's political thought and contemporary democratic theory. The volume will provide ...

Breach of Trust (Fee Schedule) “It is the responsibility of those who exercise power to show that it is legitimate.” Noam Chomsky It is not possible to charge or arrest people for statutory offenses under the common law. The U.S. Corp. is operating under presumed Admiralty – Maritime (pirate) jurisdiction when they arrest “persons” (within 2-letter code followed by 5 number code “pirate jurisdiction”) for statutory offenses. This is considered an “in rem” action against a vessel (action against the thing). In “Economic Analysis of Property Rights”, Cambridge University Press, 2nd Edition, Barzel observed that, what really matters for an individual is his ability to “use” a given commodity. Under these considerations, it can be seen that the extent to which an individual can enjoy the attributes of his or her property actually defines his rights over that good. To make his point, Barzel stated that “anyone who expects to benefit from an asset, be it a legal owner or a thief, is ...

1 Corinthians 12 Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV) 12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. 3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds o ...

Implications of Genetic Convergent Evolution for Common Descent The aforemtnioned paper in Trends in Genetics, "Causes and evolutionary significance of genetic convergence," notes that that genetic convergence is not uncommon, even though only a "restricted number of substitutions" at the genetic level can create novel phenotypic traits. This data not only shows that functional genotypes are rare, but it also poses a much deeper problem for evolutionary thinking--one that challenges the very basis for constructing phylogenetic trees. The main assumption behind evolutionary trees is that functional genetic similarity implies inheritance from a common ancestor. But "convergent" genetic evolution shows that there are many instances where functional similarity is not the result of inheritance from a common ancestor. So when we find functional genetic similarity, are we to assume that it represents a homologous DNA sequence, or a convergently similarity sequence? This poses great difficulties for those who wis ...

For all my dearest Students! Please, read and remember it forever:) Errors play a necessary and important part in language learning. They are part of learners’ interlanguage, i.e. the learners’ own version of the second language which they speak as they learn. Learners unconsciously process, i.e. analyse and reorganise their interlanguage. Interlanguage is not fixed. It develops and progresses as learners learn more. Experts think that interlanguage is an essential and unavoidable stage in language learning. In other words, interlanguage and errors are necessary to language learning. L1 learners go through a stage similar to the interlanguage stage: when children learn their mother tongue they seem to speak their own version of it for a while, to make progress on some language items, then to go backwards, and to make mistakes for a time before these mistakes finally disappear, usually without obvious correction. Did you know in Early Irish Law - Pregnant women's cravings were covered by Brehon Law. Hard to believe, but it's true. If a pregnant woman craved carrots and her husband had none but went and stole some for her, he was exempt from the law. He could satisfy her cravings, within reason, and not be prosecuted for theft! Maternity leave was also a feature of Medieval Ireland. The Brehon Laws state that in the case of a pregnant servant of the household who was unable to fulfil her workload the man who caused the pregnancy had to provide relief for the pregnant woman by means of a replacement worker. The prescribed time period granted was one month ante-natal leave with a further month for post-natal recuperation. c.f. Ni Chonaill, B. Child-centred law in medieval Ireland. Drug Myths A myth is a widely held false belief and there are many drug myths. One way to create a myth is to simplify a complicated subject by omitting important factors. The simplified version of the gateway drug hypothesis is that youths progress through stages of substance use to become persistent daily hard drug users. The drug warriors extended this to imply that the persistent hard drug users would in time become serious criminal offenders. Drug use starts out as a voluntary behavior but if it continues the drug can alter the brain and biology starts to play an increasing role until the behavior becomes compulsive. The general population consists of; 1. A majority that have never used drugs. 2. A large minority (42%) that used drugs in the past but are not using them now. 3. A small minority (5%) that have used marijuana in the past month. 4. A smaller minority (2.5%) that have used hard drugs in the past month. 5. A tiny minority that use hard drugs daily. Golub and Johnson (2002) found that 0.1 . ...

What's it really like? Virgil Ierubino is a 25 year old Digital Marketing Executive, currently working at the publisher Cambridge University Press. Virgil Ierubino - Digital Marketing Executive Here he explains his career so far: I graduated in 2008 with a degree in Philosophy from Cambridge University. As arts students will know, apart from academia, there is no obvious career path for graduates in this subject. However, philosophy taught me to think logically and write creatively, and both these skills ended up being invaluable for my marketing career so far. Apart from philosophy, I had always taken a huge interest in the digital field. I have always been very technical, and my knowledge of software made me an ideal candidate for digital marketing roles. After I graduated, I secured the role of Marketing Manager at a company which sells animation software. I managed the brand, devised marketing campaigns and controlled the company’s website. ‘The Hunza campaign’ I RECENTLY went through an article by a German professor of geography, Dr Hermann Kruetzmann, under the heading ‘The Karakoram Highway: The Impact of Road Construction on Mountain Societies’, published by Cambridge University Press in 1991. In it, the author has self-termed the war of 1891 fought in the Nagar Valley, Hunza-Nagar district in Gilgit-Baltistan, now part of Pakistan, between the British and locals as ‘The Hunza Campaign, 1891’. Taking into account the historical context of Hunza and Nagar as two equal neighbouring principalities, I disagree with the author on the following three points: (a) In 1891, the war between the British and locals was fought at Nilt Fort in a place called Jamila Mo Har, a narrow gully between the villages of Nilt and Thole, in Nagar rather than in Hunza. (b) In a direct confrontation with the British-backed army of the Maharaja of Kashmir, it was the fighters of Nagar who lost many personnel and still have a historic graveyard in the Th ...

On 09-Jul-13, the Financial Times wrote that “Gaza’s 1.7 million residents [have been] boxed in by Israel’s restrictions on trade imposed after Hamas’ rise to power in [Jan.] 2006.” As far as conservative newspapers go, the FT usually is relatively accurate in its depiction of U.S./Israeli crimes, but the above statement is just a myth. Gazans have been “boxed in” for over 36 years. Outside of Israel, Western newspapers ofter claim that Tel Aviv, really, tried to liberate Gaza in Aug. 2005 by ordering 8,000 illegal settlers out and transferred into the West Bank. But, alas, “a terrorist organization bent on Israel’s destruction […] controls Gaza” (Ministry for Strategic Affairs official to the WSJ, 08-Dec-12). Similarly, on 06-Feb-08, the New York Times wrote “the strip […] is controlled by Hamas.” No it is not; the only entity that “controls” the strip is Israel. The phrase has become almost ubiquitous in the West; but it is false. Let’s have a look at what a conservativ ...
