This is a reminder that you are invited to the Waring Historical Library's annual Warren A. Sawyer Lecture on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at 5:30 pm in Basic Sciences Building 100. Dr. Peter McCandless will present his talk, “Disease, Slavery, and Race in the South Carolina Lowcountry.” Dr McCandless will discuss the interaction of disease, the rice plantation economy, and racial perceptions in the development of the South Carolina low country, an area renowned as the wealthiest and unhealthiest in British North America. Dr. McCandless’s talk is based on his recent award-winning book, Slavery, Disease, and Suffering in the Southern Lowcountry, published in 2011 by Cambridge University Press. Dr. McCandless received his Ph.D. in Modern British and African History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1974. FACTS How many languages are there? "Today there are about 6,000 languages in the world, and half of the world's population speaks only 10 of them. English is the single most dominant of these 10. British colonialism initiated the spread of English across the globe; it has been spoken nearly everywhere and has become even more prevalent since World War II, with the global reach of American power." (Christine Kenneally, The First Word: The Search for the Origins of Language. Viking, 2007) From how many other languages has English borrowedwords? "English has borrowed words from over 350 other languages, and over three-quarters of the English lexicon is actually Classical or Romance in origin. Plainly, the view that to borrow words leads to a language's decline is absurd, given that English has borrowed more words than most." (David Crystal, English as a Global Language, 2nd edition. Cambridge University Press, 2003) How many people in the world today speak English? First-language speakers: 375 million Secon ...

Cambridge University Press invites you and your members to participate in our writing contest! Hemingway's Missing Suitcase In December 1922, Hadley Hemingway decided to surprise her husband Ernest by bringing all of his in-progress manuscripts for him to work on during their holiday in Switzerland. The plan went awry when the suitcase containing the manuscripts--carbon copies included--were stolen at the Gare de Lyon in Paris. “I suppose you heard about the loss of my Juvenilia? […] All that remains of my complete works are three pencil drafts of a bum poem which was later scrapped, some correspondence between John McClure and me, and some journalistic carbons,” Hemingway wrote morosely to his mentor Ezra Pound on January 23, 1923. “You, naturally, would say, ‘Good’ etc. But don’t say it to me. I aint yet reached that mood. I worked 3 years on the *** stuff. Some like that Paris 1922 I fancied.” Hemingway’s suitcase is still missing to this very day- imagine if you found it, still cont ...

A Brief History of the Multiverse The idea of an inflationary multiverse (the universe consisting of many universes with different properties) was first proposed in 1982 in my Cambridge University preprint Nonsingular Regenerating Inflationary Universe . A more detailed discussion of this possibility was contained in my paper The New Inflationary Universe Scenario published in the book "The Very Early Universe," ed. G.W. Gibbons, S.W. Hawking and S.Siklos, Cambridge University Press, 1983, pp. 205-249. Implications of this picture for the "SUSY landscape" (the universe with different properties corresponding to different vacua of supersymmetric theories) was discussed in my paper Inflation Can Break Symmetry In SUSY, Phys. Lett. B131, 330 (1983). A major step in the development of the theory of the multiverse was related to the discovery of eternal inflation; for a discussion of its anthropic implications see the last page of my paper Eternally Existing Self-Reproducing Chaotic Inflationary Universe, Phys ...

Was atheism a popular ideology in antiquity? Jan N. Bremmer, a scholar specialising in this field, argues that ideological atheism is a relatively modern phenomenon, he writes, "[A]theism never developed into a popular ideology with a recognizable following. All we have in antiquity is the exceptional individual who dared to voice his disbelief or bold philosophers who proposed intellectual theories about the coming into existence of the gods without, normally, putting their theories into practice or rejecting religious practice altogether. If we find atheism at all, it is usually a 'soft' atheism or the imputation of atheism to others as a means to discredit them." [Reference: Jan N. Bremmer. Atheism in Antiquity, in Michael Martin (ed), The Cambridge Companion to Atheism. Cambridge University Press. 2006, p. 11.]

The British And U.S. Governments Installed Khomeini Into Power In 1979 October 5, 2012 - Conspiracy Archive - “It is easier to mislead many men than one.” – Herodotus. (As quoted in F.E. Adcock’s 1963 book, ‘Thucydides And His History,’ on pg. 51. Cambridge University Press: London). “Reality is created by language. But, we don’t realize how true this is, that reality really is created by language, and that we are all imprisoned in somebody else’s language.” – Terence McKenna. (From a talk in New York in 1992 called, ‘Alchemy and the Hermetic Tradition’: Part 3 of 3; 0:13:00 – 0:13:17 in the video). The thesis that the British and U.S. governments drove out the Shah and replaced him with Khomeini destroys the clash of civilizations myth that has dominated the global conversation between Islam and the West for over a generation. For years I thought this thesis was too “out there,” and a baseless conspiracy theory. I did not want to believe that there was any truth to ...

PRINCIPLES OF INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL LAW (2nd ed.), by Philippe Sands. New York: Cambridge University Press, 2003. 1116pp. Cloth $170.00. ISBN: 0-521-81794-3. Paperback $60.00. Email: gawsmithis the most important book on international environmental law ever published. It will change forever the way we think about the subject. I suspect it will have a major impact on the way we teach the subject. And it should and may change the way people write about the subject. To substantiate these claims a little history is in order. International law has always been a difficult subject to understand and to teach. There has long been, for example, and there remains for many, a question about whether it is really law at all. Skepticism is even greater when it comes to outcomes. Clear instances of when international law has made a difference in the world are few and f ...

It's snowy and cold again here in the plains of Johnstown, just 15 miles from the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. But, have no concern. Such wintering has value past and present. According to one geologist (AB Franca, Petrobras/Nexpar, Brazil, late 1980s), glacial deposits have been a focus for petroleum geologists in the past half-century. Hydro-carbon extraction from ancient glacial deposits has been quite productive in such countries as Oman, Bolivia, Australia, and Brazil (Franca, AB, "Itarare Group: Gondwanan Carboniferous-Permian Basin, Brazil," in Earth's Glacial Record, M. Deynoux, et al., editors, 1994, Cambridge University Press, pp 70-82.) Knowing that daylight savings time begins March 10 is another excitement for climate thinking. Spring will be soon. Cambridge University Press 2 Long Melford 0: From the despair of defeat Melford will have been boosted in confidence in this testing encounter between the strugglers and in Cambridge one of the strongest teams in the League. This indeed was a creditable performance by Melford and will give them heart for their next encounter against Saffron Walden at Stoneylands. Early on it was Will Wingfield followed by his brother Tom Wingfield testing out home keeper Phil Peachey. Gradually the home side started to have more of the ball but found Melford keeper Sam Mansfield, and the Melford back four firm in their resolve. Not until the 41st minute did CUP find their first goal, when NICK FINNEY held the ball well and beat Mansfield from an oblique angle. On the stroke of half time the home team went further ahead, when ex Cambridge City player Lee Clift was felled in the area and home captain JACK WATSON converted from the spot. The second half saw Cambridge create a lot of chances plus Melford creating some of thei ...

Next year I will be leaving to take a job at the University of Notre Dame. I am writing to share my experience during the last few years in the hopes that my story will demonstrate the pervasive and serious problems at this institution. A History of Islamic Societies by Ira Lapidus page 576, 578 Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1988 [page 575] Government reorganization in a decentralized country [Iran] was not adequate to make up for the inherent barriers to a strong central state. Intellectual reforms reached a small milieu of court officials and Western-educated Iranian journalists but did not touch the mass of the population. The reform program faltered because the rulers were themselves afraid that they might compromise their authority. Dependent on British and Russian help to maintain their regime, they had little incentive to strike out on their own. They found it difficult to raise money, and when they could raise it, being used to thinking of state revenues as a form of private property, were unable to use it in the public interest. Furthermore, tribal groups resisted centralization of military power. The `ulama' opposed secularization. The Russians hindered railway construction. In the face of such pressures, Qajar reforms ...
by Mohammad Imad Rabindranath Tagore says in a letter to Subhash Chandra Bose about Vande Mataram- "The core of Vande Mataram is a hymn to goddess Durga: this is so plain that there can be no debate about it. Of course Bankimchandra does show Durga to be inseparably united with Bengal in the end, but no Mussulman [Muslim] can be expected patriotically to worship the ten-handed deity as 'Swadesh' [the nation]. The novel Anandamath is a work of literature, and so the song is appropriate in it. But Parliament is a place of union for all religious groups, and there the song cannot be appropriate." This is merely an overview of Waldensian history, based primarily on the sources noted below. I also include personal observations from years of studying medieval history and heresy. For a more complete history, see Gabriel Audisio's book, The Waldensian Dissent, Persecution and Survival c.1170-c.1570 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1999) ISBN 0 521 55984 7 (paperback) or 0521 55029 7 (hardback). This is a sound, fair, sympathetic, and highly readable Waldensian history. Other histories abound, but they are either biased, ignore important recent published research, or are more scholarly and detailed than the average reader seeks-and in a foreign language. Audisio provides references to other materials for those who desire more detail. Except as noted, the sketch below follows Audisio. The following fairly recent Waldensian histories are also worth reading: Cameron, Euan. The Reformation of the Heretics: The Waldenses of the Alps, 1480-1580 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1984). We've come a long way: Slave Owners Purchased Us As Wet Nurses To get to the bottom of this breastfeeding business, it's important to go back. Waaay back. A long time ago, black women were notorious for nursing. In fact, slave owners used and purchased black women as wet nurses for their own children, often forcing these mothers to stop nursing their own infants to care for others. "On the one hand, wet nursing claimed the benefits of breastfeeding for the offspring of white masters while denying or limiting those health advantages to slave infants. On the other hand, wet nursing required slave mothers to transfer to white offspring the nurturing and affection they should have been able to allocate to their own children," writes historian Wilma A. Dunaway, in the book The African-American Family in Slavery and Emancipation, published by Cambridge University Press. And since breastfeeding reduces fertility, slave owners forced black women to stop breastfeeding early so that they could continue breeding, of ...

Genitive case can also be indicated by an of phrase after a noun. In addition, the possessive determiners (my, your, his, her, its, our, and their) are sometimes regarded as genitive pronouns. The genitive case signals a structural grammatical relationship between a noun and a noun phrase, and the actual relationship between the things referred to by the nouns may simply be some kind of loose association." Second Scripture reading for Sunday, December 9, 2012 (Luke 3:1-6): "In the fifteenth year of the emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, when Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip prince of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias prince of Abilene, during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. And he went all over the Jordan valley proclaiming a baptism in token of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the prophecies of Isaiah: A voice cries in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord; clear a straight path for him. Every ravine shall be filled in, and every mountain and hill levelled; winding paths shall be straightened and rough ways made smooth; and all mankind shall see God's deliverance.'" (The Revised English Bible, Oxford/Cambridge University Press, 1989, The New Testament, p. 51-52)
Max Müller. A paid employee, who translated the Rigved in a demeaning style. The hidden secrets of his life. ...by Cool 1. Max Müller was a British agent, especially employed (in 1847) to write the translations of the Vedas in such a demeaning way so that the Hindus should lose faith in them. His personal letter to his wife dated December 9, 1867 reveals this fact. 2. He was highly paid for this job. According to the statistical information given on page 214 of the “English Education, 1798-1902” by John William Adamson, printed by Cambridge University Press in 1930, the revised scale of a male teacher was £90 per year and for a woman, £60 in 1853. The present salary of a teacher in London is £14,000 to £36,000 per year, which averages a minimum of at least 200 times increase in the last 146 years. Max Müller was paid £4 per sheet of his writing which comes to £800 of today (1999). This is an incredibly high price for only one sheet of writing. But it’s the general law of business, that the ...

This explains a lot about the liberal reactions toward Obama: they were told how wonderful he is, and, in spite of the evidence to the contrary, that initial information acts as a filter to how later information is interpreted. Even when he is grossly incompetent, it's in a wonderful way. "[B]eliefs can survive potent logical or empirical challenges. They can survive and even be bolstered by evidence that most uncommitted observers would agree logically demands some weakening of such beliefs. They can even survive the total destruction of their original evidential bases." —Lee Ross and Craig Anderson Ross, Lee; Anderson, Craig A. Burma: Myanmarnization by Brute Force will Not Pay November 1, 2012 | By: Kanbawza Win like Kanbawza WinThe Union of Burma, since its inception has been dominated by the majority Myanmar over the Non-Myanmar, it harbours an obsession to be homogeneous state of one country, (Myanmar), one religion (Buddhist) and one language (Myanmar language) over all the Non-Myanmar ethnic nationalities and all faiths. This is why it has the longest ethnic insurrections in the world up to this day since its founding in 1948. Now, because of a terrible religious and ethnic sectarian strife in Western Burma, a veil had been lifted to reveal a hideous blemish where Rakhine Buddhist were pitted against the immigrant Muslim leaving some 400 people killed so far. This is not the first nor will be the last if forced Myanmarnization goes on. Currently there is an addition 28,000 displaced Muslim in addition to 75,000 already in the refugee camps in Bangladesh.1 Under the current Burmese law, the 800,000 Arakanese Muslims are de ...

Largest Global Study on Violence Against Women Finds Feminist Movements Hold the Key to Change A new study on violence against women conducted over four decades and in 70 countries reveals the mobilization of feminist movements is more important for change than the wealth of nations, left-wing political parties, or the number of women politicians. The study in the latest issue of American Political Science Review (APSR), published by Cambridge University Press for the American Political Science Association (APSA), found that in feminist movements that were autonomous from political parties and the state, women were able to articulate and organize around their top priorities as women, without having to answer to broader organizational concerns or men’s needs. Mobilizing across countries, feminist movements urged governments to approve global and regional norms and agreements on violence. Strong, autonomous feminist movements were the first to articulate the issue of violence against women and the key cat ...

The 'Canto' series by Cambridge University Press has always been a hot favourrite among amateurs and veterans alike. And god, they are really palatable. Skinner has edited a volume on the return of grand theory in the social sciences and it has some of the most interesting and fathomable (for a large part of my undergradsand masters, Gadamer and Derrida have bounced over my head) debates among the grandmasters about the course and direction of kowledge... and the centrality of concern for problem solving. Just located the book at the Central Library... and it is finally making sense. Lucid enough!!

History of Iran Safavid Empire 1502 - 1736 By: Shapour Ghasemi After the disastrous invasion of Mongols, in the 1200s, migrated Turks and Mongolian tribes adopted the Persian customs and even language. In the 1300s, the Ilkhanids, a dynasty founded by the "Genghis Khan's" grandson, Holagu Khan, had been an influential factor in Persia. During these turbulent years of 13th century, the Persians had submerged themselves deeper in Islamic devotion and Sufism. Towards the end of 14th century, Timur (Tamerlane) claimed to be descent from Genghis Khan's family. The disturbed conditions in Mongol Transoxania gave him in the town of Kish the chance to build up a kingdom in Central Asia. He entered Iran in 1380 and in 1393 reduced the Jalayirids power and domination after taking their capital, Baghdad. In 1402 he captured the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid at Ankara; and conquered Syria then turned his attention to campaigns to the east of his quickly acquired and ill-cemented empire; he died in 1405 on an expedition to C ...

Louis XIV & Modern French Cuisine Louis XIV (1638-1715) encouraged and enjoyed the "new invention" of classic French cuisine. This food movement differed from Medieval/Renaissance cooking in that it stressed the natural flavors of foods rather than intense spices and sugars. Classic French cuisine was championed by chefs such as Pierre Francois de la Varenne. His book, Le Cuisiner Francois (published in 1651), is still regarded as a turning point in culinary history. This was also the period of "New World" food introductions. Among the most significant: potatoes and tomatoes (These were not, however, assimilated until the next century). Salads of all sorts were also very popular, as as were a battery of new sauces, which would define classic French cuisine. Of course, not everyone was able to partake in this new food revolution. What were the peasants eating in the 17th century France? "In the reign of Louis XIV, cooking was spectacular rather than fine or delicate, and the festivities of the Prince of Co ...

God's Answer to Job by Wes Morriston ( Religious Studies, 32 (Cambridge University Press,1996) 339-356. ) Let the day perish in which I was born... [Job 3:3a] 1 ...he crushes me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause; he will not let me get my breath, but fills me with bitterness. though I am blameless, he would prove me perverse. [9:17-18,20b] ...therefore I say, he destroys both the blameless and the wicked. When disaster brings sudden death, he mocks at the calamity of the innocent. [9:22] I call aloud, but there is no justice. [19:7b] Here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! [31:35a] Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind. Who is this that darkens counsel without knowledge? ... Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? ... when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? [38:1-2,4a,7] I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes. [42:5-6] In ...

The Enochian Language Fictional Magic Reverend Tom Erik Raspotnik Leader of Theistic Satanism In the late 1500's two “snake oil salesmen” Dee’s and Kelly were performing magical operations for Queen Elizabeth, these two through invocations and incantations were supposedly able to manifest several angels to commune with, and so started their “traveling circus” widely accepted at that time by the rich and famous of a burgeoning upper class. However only their accounts exist and while they were attended by the Queens Guards no logs were noted of ritual times or times they performed rituals only hearsay and loans of gold are noted to the operations by Queen Elizabeth I scribes. However there are questions that must be brought forward and questioned. 1. While depictions of angels were prevalent in Europe they did not embody the cylinders of Mesopotamia and more and likely were derivative of the imagination of Catholicism. While not implying that Catholicism invented angels, they defined the perfectio ...
Lady Chatterley's Lover is a novel by D. H. Lawrence, first published in 1928. The first edition was printed privately in Florence, Italy with assistance from Pino Orioli; it could not be published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960. (A private edition was issued by Inky Stephensen's Mandrake Press in 1929.) The book soon became notorious for its story of the physical relationship between a working-class man and an upper-class woman, its explicit descriptions of sex, and its use of then-unprintable words. The story is said to have originated from events in Lawrence's own unhappy domestic life, and he took inspiration for the settings of the book from Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, where he grew up. According to some critics, the fling of Lady Ottoline Morrell with "Tiger", a young stonemason who came to carve plinths for her garden statues, also influenced the story. Lawrence at one time considered calling the novel Tenderness and made significant alterations to the text and story in the process of ...

Dr. Morey Vindicated Once Again! Dr. Morey argued back in 1980’s, long before anyone else, that Allah in pre-Islamic times was the moon god. The Muslims, not being able to refute his arguments and documentation, made up the LIE that he was saying that Muslims today consciously worship the moon. Of course, he corrected their subterfuge over and over again. But Shabir Ali and rest of the Muslim apologists made up a straw man argument because they could not deal with what he actually wrote. The Muslims enlisted stupid Christians to condemn Dr. Bob and they went on the internet to attack his character and motives. They are dupes of the devil who invented Islam. The Bible tells us that those who engage in slander and gossip are no more saved then a door knob. Sam Shamoun has just written a wonderful article that vindicates what Dr. Morey wrote in Islamic Invasion and Winning the War Against Radical Islam. We will put this article on FD’s website and hope that you will it forward it to everyone you know. Go ...

Fascinating? I'll say. From an article I read; Dr. Alan Poole is the author of Ospreys: A Natural and Unnatural history, published by Cambridge University Press in 1989. He worked closely with the late Joseph and Gilbert Fernandez in their successful crusade to save the osprey at Allen’s Pond and on the Westport River and Dr. Poole continues to monitor their progress. Writing in “This Famed Bird”, a column written for David Gessner’s website OspreyWorld.com, Dr. Poole noted: “The habits of this famed bird differ so materially from those of almost all others of its tribe that an accurate description of them cannot fail to be interesting to the student of nature.” So wrote John James Audubon over 150 years ago in Birds of America. He had the pleasure of seeing Ospreys nesting in primeval American wilderness – while he was floating the Mississippi by barge, sailing the Florida coast, riding weeks on end through towering eastern forests. Reading him we weep for what’s been lost. But we haven ...
