Breach of Trust (Fee Schedule) “It is the responsibility of those who exercise power to show that it is legitimate.” Noam Chomsky It is not possible to charge or arrest people for statutory offenses under the common law. The U.S. Corp. is operating under presumed Admiralty – Maritime (pirate) jurisdiction when they arrest “persons” (within 2-letter code followed by 5 number code “pirate jurisdiction”) for statutory offenses. This is considered an “in rem” action against a vessel (action against the thing). In “Economic Analysis of Property Rights”, Cambridge University Press, 2nd Edition, Barzel observed that, what really matters for an individual is his ability to “use” a given commodity. Under these considerations, it can be seen that the extent to which an individual can enjoy the attributes of his or her property actually defines his rights over that good. To make his point, Barzel stated that “anyone who expects to benefit from an asset, be it a legal owner or a thief, is ...

Read this today in The Cambridge Companion to American Methodism (chapter 3 by our friend Doug Strong): "Though never the largest holiness group, in many ways the formation of the Free Methodist Church represented the paradigmatic holiness denomination – and also displayed all three of the major divisive tensions plaguing nineteenth-century Methodism: the challenges to racism, to hierarchical power, and to the effects of increasing prosperity leading to conflict over what constituted true Methodist identity." Right on! (pp. 79-80). Cambridge University Press.

1 Corinthians 12 Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV) 12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. 3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds o ...

Implications of Genetic Convergent Evolution for Common Descent The aforemtnioned paper in Trends in Genetics, "Causes and evolutionary significance of genetic convergence," notes that that genetic convergence is not uncommon, even though only a "restricted number of substitutions" at the genetic level can create novel phenotypic traits. This data not only shows that functional genotypes are rare, but it also poses a much deeper problem for evolutionary thinking--one that challenges the very basis for constructing phylogenetic trees. The main assumption behind evolutionary trees is that functional genetic similarity implies inheritance from a common ancestor. But "convergent" genetic evolution shows that there are many instances where functional similarity is not the result of inheritance from a common ancestor. So when we find functional genetic similarity, are we to assume that it represents a homologous DNA sequence, or a convergently similarity sequence? This poses great difficulties for those who wis ...

For all my dearest Students! Please, read and remember it forever:) Errors play a necessary and important part in language learning. They are part of learners’ interlanguage, i.e. the learners’ own version of the second language which they speak as they learn. Learners unconsciously process, i.e. analyse and reorganise their interlanguage. Interlanguage is not fixed. It develops and progresses as learners learn more. Experts think that interlanguage is an essential and unavoidable stage in language learning. In other words, interlanguage and errors are necessary to language learning. L1 learners go through a stage similar to the interlanguage stage: when children learn their mother tongue they seem to speak their own version of it for a while, to make progress on some language items, then to go backwards, and to make mistakes for a time before these mistakes finally disappear, usually without obvious correction. Did you know in Early Irish Law - Pregnant women's cravings were covered by Brehon Law. Hard to believe, but it's true. If a pregnant woman craved carrots and her husband had none but went and stole some for her, he was exempt from the law. He could satisfy her cravings, within reason, and not be prosecuted for theft! Maternity leave was also a feature of Medieval Ireland. The Brehon Laws state that in the case of a pregnant servant of the household who was unable to fulfil her workload the man who caused the pregnancy had to provide relief for the pregnant woman by means of a replacement worker. The prescribed time period granted was one month ante-natal leave with a further month for post-natal recuperation. c.f. Ni Chonaill, B. Child-centred law in medieval Ireland. Drug Myths A myth is a widely held false belief and there are many drug myths. One way to create a myth is to simplify a complicated subject by omitting important factors. The simplified version of the gateway drug hypothesis is that youths progress through stages of substance use to become persistent daily hard drug users. The drug warriors extended this to imply that the persistent hard drug users would in time become serious criminal offenders. Drug use starts out as a voluntary behavior but if it continues the drug can alter the brain and biology starts to play an increasing role until the behavior becomes compulsive. The general population consists of; 1. A majority that have never used drugs. 2. A large minority (42%) that used drugs in the past but are not using them now. 3. A small minority (5%) that have used marijuana in the past month. 4. A smaller minority (2.5%) that have used hard drugs in the past month. 5. A tiny minority that use hard drugs daily. Golub and Johnson (2002) found that 0.1 . ...

What's it really like? Virgil Ierubino is a 25 year old Digital Marketing Executive, currently working at the publisher Cambridge University Press. Virgil Ierubino - Digital Marketing Executive Here he explains his career so far: I graduated in 2008 with a degree in Philosophy from Cambridge University. As arts students will know, apart from academia, there is no obvious career path for graduates in this subject. However, philosophy taught me to think logically and write creatively, and both these skills ended up being invaluable for my marketing career so far. Apart from philosophy, I had always taken a huge interest in the digital field. I have always been very technical, and my knowledge of software made me an ideal candidate for digital marketing roles. After I graduated, I secured the role of Marketing Manager at a company which sells animation software. I managed the brand, devised marketing campaigns and controlled the company’s website. Just under a year later, I left the company and for a brief ...
‘The Hunza campaign’ I RECENTLY went through an article by a German professor of geography, Dr Hermann Kruetzmann, under the heading ‘The Karakoram Highway: The Impact of Road Construction on Mountain Societies’, published by Cambridge University Press in 1991. In it, the author has self-termed the war of 1891 fought in the Nagar Valley, Hunza-Nagar district in Gilgit-Baltistan, now part of Pakistan, between the British and locals as ‘The Hunza Campaign, 1891’. Taking into account the historical context of Hunza and Nagar as two equal neighbouring principalities, I disagree with the author on the following three points: (a) In 1891, the war between the British and locals was fought at Nilt Fort in a place called Jamila Mo Har, a narrow gully between the villages of Nilt and Thole, in Nagar rather than in Hunza. (b) In a direct confrontation with the British-backed army of the Maharaja of Kashmir, it was the fighters of Nagar who lost many personnel and still have a historic graveyard in the Th ...

"Tax limits, or fiscal constraints generally, can be expected to curb government's appetites to the extent that the utility function of governmental decision makers contains arguments for privately enjoyable 'creature comforts,' for final end items of consumption. Such constraints become much less effective, and may well be evaded, if the motive force behind governmental action is 'do-goodism.' On 09-Jul-13, the Financial Times wrote that “Gaza’s 1.7 million residents [have been] boxed in by Israel’s restrictions on trade imposed after Hamas’ rise to power in [Jan.] 2006.” As far as conservative newspapers go, the FT usually is relatively accurate in its depiction of U.S./Israeli crimes, but the above statement is just a myth. Gazans have been “boxed in” for over 36 years. Outside of Israel, Western newspapers ofter claim that Tel Aviv, really, tried to liberate Gaza in Aug. 2005 by ordering 8,000 illegal settlers out and transferred into the West Bank. But, alas, “a terrorist organization bent on Israel’s destruction […] controls Gaza” (Ministry for Strategic Affairs official to the WSJ, 08-Dec-12). Similarly, on 06-Feb-08, the New York Times wrote “the strip […] is controlled by Hamas.” No it is not; the only entity that “controls” the strip is Israel. The phrase has become almost ubiquitous in the West; but it is false. Let’s have a look at what a conservativ ...

Christmas, 2013 Dear Friends & Relatives-- This was a momentous year, so much so that I'll have to abandon my one-page Xmas-letter rule to do it justice, but I hope you'll find it interesting. Photos and videos for a number of things in this letter are posted below. The year began sadly, with the death in January of Carol's much-beloved 93-year-old mother, Betty Huber. Failing for some time, she died in her sleep at an assisted living home near us. In a moving, teary military service in November, with the entire extended family present, her ashes and those of Carol's dad, Harvey, a retired navy commander, were ceremoniously interred in the columbarium at Arlington National Ceremony. In April, Gene's feisty 95-year-old Aunt Clare Rodgers, the last of his father's six siblings, died of lung cancer. She was a strong-willed Auntie-Mame-type character worthy of a book. Thankfully, the year ended on a much, much brighter note. On November 16, Cathy (with Adam's help) gave us our first grandchild, Julian Harvard ...

This is a reminder that you are invited to the Waring Historical Library's annual Warren A. Sawyer Lecture on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at 5:30 pm in Basic Sciences Building 100. Dr. Peter McCandless will present his talk, “Disease, Slavery, and Race in the South Carolina Lowcountry.” Dr McCandless will discuss the interaction of disease, the rice plantation economy, and racial perceptions in the development of the South Carolina low country, an area renowned as the wealthiest and unhealthiest in British North America. Dr. McCandless’s talk is based on his recent award-winning book, Slavery, Disease, and Suffering in the Southern Lowcountry, published in 2011 by Cambridge University Press. Dr. McCandless received his Ph.D. in Modern British and African History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1974. FACTS How many languages are there? "Today there are about 6,000 languages in the world, and half of the world's population speaks only 10 of them. English is the single most dominant of these 10. British colonialism initiated the spread of English across the globe; it has been spoken nearly everywhere and has become even more prevalent since World War II, with the global reach of American power." (Christine Kenneally, The First Word: The Search for the Origins of Language. Viking, 2007) From how many other languages has English borrowedwords? "English has borrowed words from over 350 other languages, and over three-quarters of the English lexicon is actually Classical or Romance in origin. Plainly, the view that to borrow words leads to a language's decline is absurd, given that English has borrowed more words than most." (David Crystal, English as a Global Language, 2nd edition. Cambridge University Press, 2003) How many people in the world today speak English? First-language speakers: 375 million Secon ...

Cambridge University Press invites you and your members to participate in our writing contest! Hemingway's Missing Suitcase In December 1922, Hadley Hemingway decided to surprise her husband Ernest by bringing all of his in-progress manuscripts for him to work on during their holiday in Switzerland. The plan went awry when the suitcase containing the manuscripts--carbon copies included--were stolen at the Gare de Lyon in Paris. “I suppose you heard about the loss of my Juvenilia? […] All that remains of my complete works are three pencil drafts of a bum poem which was later scrapped, some correspondence between John McClure and me, and some journalistic carbons,” Hemingway wrote morosely to his mentor Ezra Pound on January 23, 1923. “You, naturally, would say, ‘Good’ etc. But don’t say it to me. I aint yet reached that mood. I worked 3 years on the *** stuff. Some like that Paris 1922 I fancied.” Hemingway’s suitcase is still missing to this very day- imagine if you found it, still cont ...
BATTLE RAGES ON FOR DU'S RIGHT TO PHOTOCOPY A student body is now defending the interests of students in court, opposing the HC stay order on photocopying of study material in DU The Association of Students for Equitable Access to Knowledge (ASEAK) on Tuesday defended the students’ interest in the Delhi High Court in the matter of copyright infringement lawsuit filed by publishing houses against Delhi University and it’s local photocopy shop. This year in March, ASEAK became the third party defender in the case, the first being Rameshwari photocopy centre and DU the second. The next hearing is on October 21. CASE BACKGROUND In August last year, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press and Taylor & Francis filed a case of copyright infringement against Delhi Univeristy and Rameshwari Photocopy Service, a licensed photocopy store in the Delhi School of Economics campus. The publishing houses claimed that the compilation of parts of books (course pack) is illegal and is a violation of the 1957 ...

We also obtain a generalization of Douglas' Theorem on the number of tilings of a family of regions of the square lattice with every second diagonal drawn in.
A Brief History of the Multiverse The idea of an inflationary multiverse (the universe consisting of many universes with different properties) was first proposed in 1982 in my Cambridge University preprint Nonsingular Regenerating Inflationary Universe . A more detailed discussion of this possibility was contained in my paper The New Inflationary Universe Scenario published in the book "The Very Early Universe," ed. G.W. Gibbons, S.W. Hawking and S.Siklos, Cambridge University Press, 1983, pp. 205-249. Implications of this picture for the "SUSY landscape" (the universe with different properties corresponding to different vacua of supersymmetric theories) was discussed in my paper Inflation Can Break Symmetry In SUSY, Phys. Lett. B131, 330 (1983). A major step in the development of the theory of the multiverse was related to the discovery of eternal inflation; for a discussion of its anthropic implications see the last page of my paper Eternally Existing Self-Reproducing Chaotic Inflationary Universe, Phys ...

The British And U.S. Governments Installed Khomeini Into Power In 1979 October 5, 2012 - Conspiracy Archive -   “It is easier to mislead many men than one.” – Herodotus. (As quoted in F.E. Adcock’s 1963 book, ‘Thucydides And His History,’ on pg. 51. Cambridge University Press: London). “Reality is created by language. But, we don’t realize how true this is, that reality really is created by language, and that we are all imprisoned in somebody else’s language.” – Terence McKenna. (From a talk in New York in 1992 called, ‘Alchemy and the Hermetic Tradition’: Part 3 of 3; 0:13:00 – 0:13:17 in the video). The thesis that the British and U.S. governments drove out the Shah and replaced him with Khomeini destroys the clash of civilizations myth that has dominated the global conversation between Islam and the West for over a generation. For years I thought this thesis was too “out there,” and a baseless conspiracy theory. I did not want to believe that there was any truth to ...

PRINCIPLES OF INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL LAW (2nd ed.), by Philippe Sands. New York: Cambridge University Press, 2003. 1116pp. Cloth $170.00. ISBN: 0-521-81794-3. Paperback $60.00. ISBN: 0-521-52106-8. Reviewed by Geoffrey Wandesforde-Smith, Emeritus Professor of Political Science, University of California, Davis. Email: gawsmithis the most important book on international environmental law ever published. It will change forever the way we think about the subject. I suspect it will have a major impact on the way we teach the subject. And it should and may change the way people write about the subject. To substantiate these claims a little history is in order. International law has always been a difficult subject to understand and to teach. There has long been, for example, and there remains for many, a question about whether it is really law at all. Skepticism is even greater when it comes to outcomes. Clear instances of when international law has made a difference in the world are few and f ...

It's snowy and cold again here in the plains of Johnstown, just 15 miles from the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. But, have no concern. Such wintering has value past and present. According to one geologist (AB Franca, Petrobras/Nexpar, Brazil, late 1980s), glacial deposits have been a focus for petroleum geologists in the past half-century. Hydro-carbon extraction from ancient glacial deposits has been quite productive in such countries as Oman, Bolivia, Australia, and Brazil (Franca, AB, "Itarare Group: Gondwanan Carboniferous-Permian Basin, Brazil," in Earth's Glacial Record, M. Deynoux, et al., editors, 1994, Cambridge University Press, pp 70-82.) Knowing that daylight savings time begins March 10 is another excitement for climate thinking. Spring will be soon. Historically, prolonged warm (especially tropical) weather was ideal for the activities of past beasts, our friends the Thunder Lizards of ancient Jurassic and Cretaceous days. Cambridge University Press 2 Long Melford 0: From the despair of defeat Melford will have been boosted in confidence in this testing encounter between the strugglers and in Cambridge one of the strongest teams in the League. This indeed was a creditable performance by Melford and will give them heart for their next encounter against Saffron Walden at Stoneylands. Early on it was Will Wingfield followed by his brother Tom Wingfield testing out home keeper Phil Peachey. Gradually the home side started to have more of the ball but found Melford keeper Sam Mansfield, and the Melford back four firm in their resolve. Not until the 41st minute did CUP find their first goal, when NICK FINNEY held the ball well and beat Mansfield from an oblique angle. On the stroke of half time the home team went further ahead, when ex Cambridge City player Lee Clift was felled in the area and home captain JACK WATSON converted from the spot. The second half saw Cambridge create a lot of chances plus Melford creating some of thei ...

Next year I will be leaving to take a job at the University of Notre Dame. I am writing to share my experience during the last few years in the hopes that my story will demonstrate the pervasive and serious problems at this institution. A History of Islamic Societies by Ira Lapidus page 576, 578 Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1988 [page 575] Government reorganization in a decentralized country [Iran] was not adequate to make up for the inherent barriers to a strong central state. Intellectual reforms reached a small milieu of court officials and Western-educated Iranian journalists but did not touch the mass of the population. The reform program faltered because the rulers were themselves afraid that they might compromise their authority. Dependent on British and Russian help to maintain their regime, they had little incentive to strike out on their own. They found it difficult to raise money, and when they could raise it, being used to thinking of state revenues as a form of private property, were unable to use it in the public interest. Furthermore, tribal groups resisted centralization of military power. The `ulama' opposed secularization. The Russians hindered railway construction. In the face of such pressures, Qajar reforms ...
by Mohammad Imad Rabindranath Tagore says in a letter to Subhash Chandra Bose about Vande Mataram- "The core of Vande Mataram is a hymn to goddess Durga: this is so plain that there can be no debate about it. Of course Bankimchandra does show Durga to be inseparably united with Bengal in the end, but no Mussulman [Muslim] can be expected patriotically to worship the ten-handed deity as 'Swadesh' [the nation]. The novel Anandamath is a work of literature, and so the song is appropriate in it. But Parliament is a place of union for all religious groups, and there the song cannot be appropriate." This is merely an overview of Waldensian history, based primarily on the sources noted below. I also include personal observations from years of studying medieval history and heresy. For a more complete history, see Gabriel Audisio's book, The Waldensian Dissent, Persecution and Survival c.1170-c.1570 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1999) ISBN 0 521 55984 7 (paperback) or 0521 55029 7 (hardback). This is a sound, fair, sympathetic, and highly readable Waldensian history. Other histories abound, but they are either biased, ignore important recent published research, or are more scholarly and detailed than the average reader seeks-and in a foreign language. Audisio provides references to other materials for those who desire more detail. Except as noted, the sketch below follows Audisio. The following fairly recent Waldensian histories are also worth reading: Cameron, Euan. The Reformation of the Heretics: The Waldenses of the Alps, 1480-1580 (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1984). We've come a long way: Slave Owners Purchased Us As Wet Nurses To get to the bottom of this breastfeeding business, it's important to go back. Waaay back. A long time ago, black women were notorious for nursing. In fact, slave owners used and purchased black women as wet nurses for their own children, often forcing these mothers to stop nursing their own infants to care for others. "On the one hand, wet nursing claimed the benefits of breastfeeding for the offspring of white masters while denying or limiting those health advantages to slave infants. On the other hand, wet nursing required slave mothers to transfer to white offspring the nurturing and affection they should have been able to allocate to their own children," writes historian Wilma A. Dunaway, in the book The African-American Family in Slavery and Emancipation, published by Cambridge University Press. And since breastfeeding reduces fertility, slave owners forced black women to stop breastfeeding early so that they could continue breeding, of ...

Genitive case can also be indicated by an of phrase after a noun. In addition, the possessive determiners (my, your, his, her, its, our, and their) are sometimes regarded as genitive pronouns. The genitive case signals a structural grammatical relationship between a noun and a noun phrase, and the actual relationship between the things referred to by the nouns may simply be some kind of loose association." Second Scripture reading for Sunday, December 9, 2012 (Luke 3:1-6): "In the fifteenth year of the emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, when Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip prince of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias prince of Abilene, during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. And he went all over the Jordan valley proclaiming a baptism in token of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the prophecies of Isaiah: A voice cries in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord; clear a straight path for him. Every ravine shall be filled in, and every mountain and hill levelled; winding paths shall be straightened and rough ways made smooth; and all mankind shall see God's deliverance.'" (The Revised English Bible, Oxford/Cambridge University Press, 1989, The New Testament, p. 51-52)
Max Müller. A paid employee, who translated the Rigved in a demeaning style. The hidden secrets of his life. ...by Cool 1. Max Müller was a British agent, especially employed (in 1847) to write the translations of the Vedas in such a demeaning way so that the Hindus should lose faith in them. His personal letter to his wife dated December 9, 1867 reveals this fact. 2. He was highly paid for this job. According to the statistical information given on page 214 of the “English Education, 1798-1902” by John William Adamson, printed by Cambridge University Press in 1930, the revised scale of a male teacher was £90 per year and for a woman, £60 in 1853. The present salary of a teacher in London is £14,000 to £36,000 per year, which averages a minimum of at least 200 times increase in the last 146 years. Max Müller was paid £4 per sheet of his writing which comes to £800 of today (1999). This is an incredibly high price for only one sheet of writing. But it’s the general law of business, that the ...
Congratulations to Assistant Professor Clerk Shaw! Clerk's book manuscript, which draws together the last several years of his scholarly work and is tentatively titled "Pleasure, Shame and Virtue: Plato on Hedonism," has been contracted for publication by Cambridge University Press. If the preliminary reviews are at all accurate (and I can confirm that they are), Clerk's book will join just a handful of others as essential reading for Plato scholars. Well done Clerk!
