The Mansion movie tonight is Burgess Meredith & Lon Chaney, Jr. In John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men."
Just finished reading "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck. You know, my Dad lived during the 1930's and he never made it sound as bad as Steinbeck does. Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird" (also set in the 30's) was mostly pretty upbeat, though it had a serious theme running through it about prejudice in general, and racism in particular. I don't know what Steinbeck saw that gave him such gloomy visions, but this one, as well as "The Grapes of Wrath" were deplorably depressing. I think I may want to look into Steinbeck's life and see how he developed such a gloomy perspective on things. Two movies adapted from "Of Mice and Men" that I'm aware of. An early version starring Burgess Meredith (Grumpy Old Men) as George and Lon Chaney, Jr (the original Wolfman) as Lennie. More recently Gary Sinise produced and directed himself as George and John Malkovich as Lennie is worth a look-see. Just an aside, years ago I saw John Malkovich co-starring with Stephan Lang (the crusty old soldier from Avatar) along wi ...
After a TV day of Natalie Dessay in "La Traviata" and Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney in "Of Mice and Men" a deep melancholy has set in.
I'm now watching one of my all-time favorite movies- "Of Mice And Men" (1939) with Lon Chaney, Jr.and Burgess Meredith. One of my favorite John Steinbeck novels, too. I hated the remake with Gary Sinise and John Malkovich. Malkovich's Lennie looked like a crackhead mental patient straight outta Mattewan! Lon Chaney was the best Lennie!
I just watched Of Mice and Men from 1939 with Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney, Jr. I rented it at the library. This was just as good as the 1992 movie with Gary Sinise. Did you know my own sister used to work for Burgess Meredith?
