Today In Black History • March 12, 1864 Charles Young, the third African American graduate of West Point, was born in Mayslick, Kentucky. After graduating from high school, Young taught at a black high school in Ripley, Ohio. In 1884, he entered the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1889. In 1903, he was appointed superintendant of Sequoia and General Grant National Parks, becoming the first black superintendant of a national park. During the 1916 Punitive Expedition into Mexico, Young commanded a squadron of the 10th Calvary (Buffalo Soldiers) and due to his exceptional leadership was promoted to lieutenant colonel. Young was medically retired from the military in 1917 and spent most of 1917 and 1918 as a professor at Wilberforce University. In late 1918, he was reinstated, promoted to colonel, and assigned as a military attaché to Liberia where he died January 8, 1922. In 1916, Young was awarded the NAACP Spingarn Medal. The Charles E. Are we awake, yet? Indiana lawmaker calls for more state's rights protection The signs of the time may not be a warning that the end of the age is at hand, but that America may be at the crossroads between reactionary and innovation. It seems to us not to be a coincidence that State's Rights doctrines are being dusted off and revisited with the election of a Black man to President of the United States. When we think about what happened 150, 100, or even 50 years ago in America between the colonists and the Native peoples, the colonists and enslaved Black Africans, and the colonists and the women, the arguments and debates resurfacing, it's very troubling. What do we make of Eric Bradner's report in the Feb. 15 issue of the Evansville Courier & Press about a "top Indiana lawmaker wants states to demand a constitutional convention where delegates would work to limit the federal government's power?" Said another way, "We can't have another president of color." The article identifies the lawmaker as Senate .. ...
Funny Joke! A soldier was given the job of hunting for buffalo. To help him, he hired an Indian Scout. The two of them set off on their journey to find buffalo. After riding awhile, the Indian gets off his horse, puts his ear to the ground and says “Humm, buffalo come”. The soldier scans the area with his binoculars, but sees nothing. He is confused and says to the Indian, “I do not see anything, how do you know buffalo come”? and the Indian replies, “ear sticky”

Here is famed buffalo hunter Billy Dixon describing the most famous rifle shot in the history of the old west, which occurred at the end of the second Battle of Adobe Walls in mid-summer, 1874: "On the third day, a party of about 15 Comanches appeared on the edge of the bluff, east of Adobe Walls Creek, and some of the boys suggested that I try the big "50'" [Sharps buffalo rifle] on them. The distance was not far from seven-eights of a mile. A number of exaggerated accounts have been written about his incident. I took careful aim and pulled the trigger. We saw an Indian fall from his horse. The others dashed out of sight behind a clump of timber. A few moments later two Indians ran quickly on foot to where the dead Indian lay, seized his body and scurried to cover. They had risked their lives, as we had frequently observed, to rescue a comrade who might be not only wounded but dead. I was a good marksman, yet this might be called a "scratch" [lucky] shot." - Billy Dixon, "The Life and Adventures of Billy ...

I am sharing this on behalf of Karen Tries: Friends, I am asking for all of your help and patience. Where I live In AZ, nothing is taught in school except the point of view of history chosen by the white man. Black History Month is not even mentioned in my grandson's schools. This needs to change. Many people contributed to the growth of the west of all races. My family is involved in a project with the 10th Cavalry of the Buffalo Soldiers which is a troop, who were active in this area during the settling of the west. We are attempting to erect a monument in this area of Southern AZ where they have been so active but not recognized. We have a fund raising project with a short video that we are trying to spread. Please look at the video, pass it on, and contribute if can to this great monument and to remember the Buffalo Soldier. I am going to ask some of you individually also to help me share through messaging and sharing on your wall. I will be sharing this a minimum of once a day. PLEASE help me share . ...
You need to just stop thinking about the way you feel and keep busy: While I agree that a movie, meditation, laughter, a book, may help distract your mind temporarily from the pain. The truth is Chronic illness doesn't cure itself because of distraction. Functioning at all with this mess of things going on takes determination beyond what our critics will ever understand. Anyone who's watched one of us push ourselves on a good day so hard that we crash for two weeks should be able to see the drive that we do have to keep going. It unfortunate that some people are too blind and punish us for their own shortcomings. Be gentle with yourselves my fibro family. I know how hard you try. Simone.

BHF: The Rufus F. Hardin School The School's founder, first principal and teacher was Buffalo Soldier George Edward Smith. Born into slavery in Virgina about 1847, Smith managed to escape to Washington, D.C. where he was pressed into service digging trenches for a threatened invasion by Confederate troops. Smith joined the U.S. Army in 1869 and was stationed at Fort Concho (San Angelo) and Fort Davis. After participating in various campaigns against the Apaches in West Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, Sergeant Smith was discharged at Fort Ringgold in 1874 - his dischage papers showing "excellent character." He re-enlisted in Washington D.C. and was then assigned to the 10th Cavalry - an all-Black Regiment that displayed a Buffalo on their crest - for the name Buffalo Soldiers - given to them by the Cheyenne Indians. While serving his last months at Fort Concho, he was also serving as an appointed school trustee for "Colored District # 1" of Tom Green County. After discharge he served as a Deacon in the San ...

We got to Fort Huachaca today. It was established in 1877. I expected to see a "fort". Instead it is a fully operational army base, with schools, churches, housing etc. You have to drive to the back to find 3 bldgs that are the museums. Didn't have any of the original bldgs. This fort was one of many built along the Mexican border to protect the Butterfield Stage Route, Wagon trains, migrants, miners, railroads, etc from the Indians & Mexico. It was used by the Buffalo Soldiers. These were our first black soldiers. There is a lot of info re their heroics & deeds. Funny trivia - We drove thru Huachaca City It would be logical to think the fort would be here. Wrong. It is located in Sierra Vista which is further up the highway. There is a spectacular view where you can see out over the valley below. It was where a lookout post once stood. A very obvious advantage point. On the way up to the fort we stopped at Fairbank Historic Townsite. This was an unexpected surprise. There is the schoolhouse; it is open . ...

Some may call me cocky And maybe it's true, but It takes a lot of confidence To march in these boots And there's a fine line Ya know, between the two So please forgive me If I'm comin' off cocky to you I'm just leading by example Hoping others will too 'Cause every single day Too many lives, we lose I never said I was a saint Never claimed to be divine So forgive me if I walk hard Or even on a thin line There's no time to waste 'Cause we're runnin' out of time If this is what it takes to win And open eyes of the blind You better bet I'm gonna do it I'm not about to duck and hide I speak the truth, without regret So I can educate some minds It takes a lot of heart To stand and fight every day Knowing that this war Will only fill it with pain You have to know, for sure That you can lead the way 'Cause if you doubt yourself You only have yourself to blame So if it's one extreme or the other I'll take cocky over being lame I gotta do what I gotta do There's too many lives to save ~Bully Soldier

In Honor of Black History Month: In Camp Mackall, North Carolina the first all-black parachute Infantry platoon was activated on November 25,1944. They would be called the 555th Battalion, a.k.a. “The Triple Nickles.” They were called the Triple Nickles because 17 of 20 soldiers selected from the Buffalo Soldiers 92nd Infantry in Arizona made it through the test platoon at Fort Benning. The unit's name came from the old English spelling and identified with three buffalo nickels joined in a triangle or pyramid. The Triple Nickles served in more airborne units during both war and peacetime than any other parachute group in history. The Triple Nickles smoke jumped into burning forests of the American northwest, searching for Japanese balloon bombs. In 1945, Private First Class Malvin L. Brown was the first smoke jumper to perish on a fire jump. In the Georgia winters of 1943 and 1944, soldiers could stare into the sky and see a blanket of white parachutes belonging to the 555th infantry battalion. Among ...

Marshall III (Author), a very interesting and inspiring read. here's a little bio about the great Lakota chief, thanks to PBS: Crazy Horse Tashunca-uitco (1849-1877) Celebrated for his ferocity in battle, Crazy Horse was recognized among his own people as a visionary leader committed to preserving the traditions and values of the Lakota way of life. Even as a young man, Crazy Horse was a legendary warrior. He stole horses from the Crow Indians before he was thirteen, and led his first war party before turning twenty. Crazy Horse fought in the 1865-68 war led by the Oglala chief Red Cloud against American settlers in Wyoming, and played a key role in destroying William J. Fetterman's brigade at Fort Phil Kearny in 1867. The student is now the instructor! Another new idea for 2013. The video support from the National Interagency Fire Center (has been great the past several years and we've made use of all the great case studies, but if you experienced the 2012 Nebraska fire season, you have your own case study. We want to hear your story! So think about the close calls you had or witnessed or the times your training hit home and come ready to share those stories. We'll relate it back to LCES, the 10 Fire Orders and 18 Watchout Situations during the Annual Fireline Safety Refresher on Saturday April 13 at 1800 in the Buffalo Soldier Barracks. Everyone is welcome and there is no cost to attend.

Friday, February 15, 2013Black History Month I bless our Black Men, Buffalo Soldiers as Bob Marley tried to tell us through song. If I could touch each Black Brother I see and tell them that in spite of all of the oppression, the collective box society has tried to place them in, they are indeed the MOST EXQUISITE ADDITION TO THE HUMAN RACE EVER. So mighty in form, so absolutely beautiful. Society has labeled the Black Man as Menace, Baby Daddy (never father – a blatent lie) Bafoon, Ignorant and the Black Woman’s dumping ground. A Black man is dreaded, an entity to run from and to fear their uncontrollable desires. However, look around. A bi-racial man is our President. He self identifies as a Black Man. The last has become first. Our Black Men must first be HEALED. They’ve been put upon, lied on, disrespected, lynched (literally and figuratively) and many are simply walking along the well worn path. The path of least resistance. The path everyone expects the Black Man to tread. I offer a poem to al ...
Police and Motorcyclists Celebrate Black History Month GREENSBORO, NC (February 15, 2013) – Tomorrow Greensboro police, along with motorcycle riders dedicated to preserving the legacy of Buffalo Soldiers, will send two important messages to some Greensboro residents: · Honor the brave African American cavalrymen and infantrymen who fought so valiantly for this country; and, · Take simple steps to reduce the chances of items getting stolen from your vehicle or home. Approximately 10 men and women with the Greensboro Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club will partner with police from the Eastern Patrol Division going door to door to talk with residents about these two topics. “You might wonder how this partnership came to be,” said Captain James Hinson, Commander of the Eastern Patrol Division. “Some of our officers were thinking of ways to celebrate Black History Month and to spread our crime prevention messages. Members of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club were quick to volunteer to ...

Feature Article: Filipino words with Arabic origin MARCH 04, 2012 TASIO ESPIRITU 28 COMMENTS AND 0 REACTIONS Photo by Tas Espiritu My Arabic is just conversational but for 13 years of my daily use of the language; I learned that there are many words in Arabic which are similar to ours. For several years, I had wanted to make a list of all those words but I didn’t have the interest to do it. Last week, I was fired with enthusiasm to start listing and to my amazement, I was able to find more words than I had expected. Such amazement drives me to write this article. A Brief History In AD 711, the Umayyad army invaded the Iberian Peninsula from the Germanic Kingdom and brought most of the region under Islamic rule. Al-Andalūs (Land of the Vandals) is the Arabic name given the Iberian Peninsula by its Muslim conquerors and its subsesquent inhabitants. From the 8th-15th centuries, parts of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar and Andorra) were ruled by the Muslims (mainly Berber and Arab) ...

Buffalo Soldier-Black soldiers who served in the U. S. Army regiment authorized by the Reorganization Act of 1866-specifically the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry. The name is said to have originated with the Plains Indians, who likened the soldier’s bravery to that of the buffalo, and because the soldiers curly black hair was reminiscent of a buffalo mane. A picture of a bison subsequently appeared on the 10th Cavalry’s regimental flag. During the first years of reconstruction President Andrew Jackson made a point of removing the Black troops from the South. As a result, the Buffalo Soldier, many of whom were former slaves, were stationed west of the Mississippi, where they took part in the Indian wars against Victorio, Sitting Bull and Geronimo, escorted trains and stagecoaches, and provided protection for American’s expanding web of railroads and telegraph lines. Between 1870 and 1890, more than a dozen Buffalo Soldiers earned the Congressional Medal of Honor, with the first . ...
Buffalo Soldiers & INDIAN WARS The Buffalo Soldiers were an African-American unit that served while the Army was segregated. In 1913, the black troopers of the 10th United States Cavalry, the “Buffalo Soldiers." arrived at Fort Huachuca and remained for almost twenty years. During this time, they participated in the 1916 punitive expedition into Mexico led by Brigadier General John J. Pershing. During World War I, the troops of the 10th Cavalry were used to guard the United States-Mexico border. During World War II, the post population soared to more that 30,000 as two black infantry divisions, the 92nd and 93rd trained here. With the departure of these units to the war zone, little activity remained and at the end of the war the post was declared surplus.
[Sen. Feinstein] – U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) introduced the Buffalo Soldiers in the National Parks Study Act this week. The bill commemorates the Buffalo Soldiers, the Army’s first all-African-American units, and the critical role they played in the early years of the N...

Black History Day 3: Allen Allensworth (7 April 1842 – 14 September 1914), born into slavery, escaped and became a Union soldier; later he became a Baptist minister and educator, and was appointed as a chaplain in the United States Army. During the American Civil War, he escaped by joining the 44th Illinois Volunteers and later served two years in the Navy. After being ordained as a minister, he worked as a teacher, studied theology and led several churches. In 1880 and 1884, he served as the only black delegate from Kentucky in the Republican National conventions. In 1886 he gained an appointment as a military chaplain to a unit of Buffalo Soldiers and served in the US Army for 20 years. By his retirement in 1906, he had been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, the first African American to reach this rank. In addition to his work in developing churches, he was notable for founding the township of Allensworth, California in 1908; it was intended as an all-black community to be free of the racial discrimina ...

People, PLEASE go visit the antique store in downtown Kent. I scored some cool stuff for this collage, all of which is now going to be scanned since I can't bear to mutilate the original articles. I've got an ad page from a Harper's Weekly, a war ration book with a few stamps left in it, a newspaper photo of some troops from WWI, among other things. My new prized possession is a the wooden confederate money from Wellsville, Ohio. But not only do they have cool things, they're also lovely people. I was talking with the woman before I left. I told her I was glad for them being there, since I'm over an hour away from the antique store back home (equally awesome and nice, by the way). She asked where I was from, then proceeded to give me a history on a large, grandfather clock in the entrance which had come from the lodge in downtown East Liverpool. I'll definitely be visiting them again.
In iconic pic of Teddy Roosevelt on San Juan Hill, Buffalo Soldiers were edited out by US media. Too Scary.
