Glen Wood extends 68-Year Daytona attendance streak: Last Thursday at Daytona International Speedway, Wood Brothers Racing was preparing their famed Motorcraft/Quick Lane NASCAR Sprint Cup car for the second of two Budweiser Duel qualifying races. But something, or more accurately someone, was missing. "Win, lose or draw, no matter what happens in this race, I'm going to go get daddy and bring him down here," said team co-owner Eddie Wood, of his legendary Hall Of Fame father, Glen Wood. Wood had never missed a Daytona 500 in its 55-year history, dating back to 1947 when the cars ran on the old Daytona Beach course that included Highway A1A and the sands of "The World's Most Famous Beach." According to the Woods, Glen's attendance at this year's Daytona 500 was questionable all along. Travel is not as easy as it once was for the 88-year-old, and Virginia got hammered by severe winter weather in recent weeks, making the trip even more daunting. Said the elder Wood about his 68th consecutive February trip t ...

TONY STEWART Like an Old Pair of Tennis Shoes KANNAPOLIS, N.C., (Feb. 26, 2014) – After missing the final 15 races of the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season with a broken right leg, Tony Stewart climbed back in his No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet SS last week at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway without missing a beat. He drove in three races – the Sprint Unlimited, Budweiser Duel and Daytona 500 – and each time he sat behind the wheel, Stewart likened the comfort of his seat to an old pair of tennis shoes. With Daytona behind Stewart and Phoenix International Raceway next up for the three-time Sprint Cup champion, Stewart ratchets up his comfort level. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver and owner has been racing and winning at Phoenix since 1993. In the Sprint Cup Series alone, Stewart has scored a win, eight top-fives, 12 top-10s and has led a total of 555 laps in 23 career starts – all while being a model of consistency, completing all but 14 of an available 7,257 laps for a completio ...

Denny Hamlin goes for three in a row with today’s running of the Daytona 500. Hamlin won the first race of the week at last Saturday’s Sprint Unlimited. He followed that win with a first place finish in his qualifying race on Thursday night during the Budweiser Duel Race. Twelve drivers have been in Hamlin’s position in the past, but no one has won three events during Speedweek. Rookie Austin Dillon will start in the pole position for today’s Daytona 500.
Just watched the budweiser duel, what a *** of a finish
DAYTONA 500.Pattie Bailey Campbell.1:00 !! "Expect Kenseth to lead laps, race up front and be a factor for the win at the end of the day"..."There's no doubt Austin Dillon is one of the fastest cars in Daytona. The Rookie of the Year contender captured the Daytona 500 pole last Sunday and was able to make it through his Budweiser Duel unscathed"."Whenever the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Daytona, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is a threat for the win".
With the Sprint Unlimited and the Budweiser Duel being the most watch programming on the all sports channel Fox Sports 1,you would thing that they would do more then just one hour of NASCAR Raceday for the Daytona 500, with not much of any thing on the channel hours before the start of the race. It just seems that is a waste of air time at a time of the day that no other sports are playing.
Martin Truex Jr. Quote about backup car: Truex Jr. ran 13 laps in his backup car during Saturday's Happy Hour practice session. It was the first time on the track for the new Furniture Row Chevy after crashing the primary car in the 2nd Budweiser Duel 150 on Thursday night. "I was definitely relieved to get some time in the car," said Truex. "Honestly, I am really excited about this race car. Without a shadow of a doubt this car is better than the one we ran the other night in the qualifying race. The Furniture Row guys did another good job. I even hate to call this car a backup because of how good it felt."

In addition to acting as the primary sponsor in 18 Sprint Cup races, Cassill will debut the nabi branding on his Hillman Racing Chevrolet at the NASCAR season-opening race, the Daytona 500, on Sunday, February 23, where he rolls off in the 18th position. Philanthropy is a large and important part of this sponsorship. Terry Labonte to make final Daytona 500 start: Two-time NASCAR champion Labonte said Sunday's Daytona 500 will be his final start in this race. This will be Labonte's 32nd Daytona 500 start. He's never won the race but finished second in 1986, '90 and '97. Labonte will fall one start short of the record for this race. Dave Marcis started 33 Daytona 500s. Labonte, 57, said he plans to run the remaining three restrictor-plate races and maybe a few others this season for car owner Frankie Stoddard's Go Fas Racing. Labonte is scheduled to start 24th Sunday. He finished 12th in the second of two Budweiser Duel races Thursday night at Daytona International Speedway. Labonte said he's certain this will be his final Daytona 500. "I still love it,'' he said. "I've been dragging this retirement out for about seven years.'' Labonte admits he told Stoddard that last year's Daytona 500 would be his final one. "I told him I really mean it this time,'' Labonte said.(Motor Racing Network)(2-21-2014) Jayski

Kyle Busch is the only driver that has a chance to win all 3 races at Daytona this weekend! He has started well as he already won the truck race but I think his teammate Denny Hamlin may give him a run for his money in the 500 as he has one the Sprint Unlimited and the Budweiser duel already!

There's a rule, it's three inches. Everybody in the garage has adjusted their cars during the race and it's never been an issue afterward. But I mean it's a different deal here. Ruh Ro! Daytona Beach, Fla. -- Who knew that running out of gas could prove so costly? A miscalculation of fuel by the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team left Jimmie Johnson's Chevy sputtering at the finish of Thursday night's second Budweiser Duel and triggered a nine-car wreck that collected Jamie McMurray, Martin Truex Jr., Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer, Michael Waltrip, David Ragan, Kyle Larson and Ryan Truex. Forty-nine drivers will compete for one of 43 spots in the 2014 Daytona 500. The entry list for the "Great American Race," to be held Feb. 23 at Daytona International Speedway, includes nine former winners, and eight drivers vying to make their first Daytona 500 start. Despite NASCAR revising its qualifying format and introducing group qualifying at oval track races, the new system will not be implemented until the second event of the season at Phoenix International Raceway. Determining the 43-car field for the Daytona 500 will continue to consist of various stages, with the front row determined Feb. 16 via single-car runs. Positions 3-32 will be set by the finishing order of the Feb. 20 Budweiser Duel qualifying races. Positions 33-36 will go to the drivers who qualified the fastest but didn't earn a spot in one of the two qualifying races. The final seven spots are provisionals based on 2013 owner points and whether a former champion has yet to qualify. Daytona 500 entry list Number Driver Car Model ...
Official Daytona 500 entry list released; qualifying format explained. Last week, we ran a preliminary Daytona 500 entry list based on confirmations and projections of entries from all offseason announcements. There’s only one change from the list we outlined, and it’s an addition. The 48 cars listed last week are all on the official entry list, joined by the No. 40 Hillman Racing Chevrolet driven by Landon Cassill for the entry list completion of 49 cars. More importantly perhaps is a rundown of owner points shuffles/changes and how the cars will qualify for the Daytona 500. The Daytona 500 qualifying format, unlike the remaining 35 NASCAR Sprint Cup races this year, is unchanged. •The front row, positions 1-2, will be filled by single-car, two-lap time trials held on Sunday. •Positions 3-32 are filled by the top 15 finishers in each of the Budweiser Duel races held Thursday night. The 16th place car gets in if either driver on the Daytona 500 front row finishes in the top 15. •Positions 33-36 ...
Winston Cup Series (1971-2003) NEXTEL Cup Series (2004-2007) Sprint Cup Series (2008–present) Rule changes in 1972 establishing a minimum distance (250 miles / 400 km, later reduced to 186.4 miles / 300 km after the energy crisis) led to the elimination of shorter races (typically between 50-150 miles, or 80-240 km) from the schedule. PERSEVERANCE PAYS DIVIDENDS FOR MEARS AND GEICO TEAM   Player Management International Media Release   Daytona Beach, FL (February 24, 2013) – After a successful week of practice and qualifying, Casey Mears and his GEICO team were anxious to get underway at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday afternoon.  While gray skies hovered and rain threatened the area, clear weather prevailed, allowing a full 500 miles of racing at the World Center of Racing.   The previous weekend saw Mears sit 17th in both practice sessions before qualifying 15th.  Mears’ GEICO Ford Fusion was strong, as evidenced by his effort during Thursday’s Budweiser Duel number one, where he ran in second place for the bulk of the race before finishing eighth.   The Germain Racing team looked to pick up where they left off when the green flag set the 55th Daytona 500 underway on Sunday afternoon.  Starting 17th, Mears vacillated back and forth in the draft before the event’s first caution flag was displayed on lap 27 for ...

Kurt Busch Finishes 5th in Daytona 500 Qualifying Race Daytona Beach, Fla. (Feb. 21, 2013) -- Kurt Busch diced his way to a fifth-place finish in Thursday's first Budweiser Duel qualifying race here at Daytona International Speedway. The top-five result will have Busch starting 11th in Sunday's Daytona 500, the opening points race of the 2013 Sprint Cup Series season. When the race was restarted with four laps remaining following a caution for an accident on the backstretch, Busch's No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet SS was positioned in ninth place. The former NASCAR champion showed his savvy driving skills in the draft by picking up an additional four positions when he took the checkered flag. "We'll take a top-five," said Busch.
