Thanks Tom Watson! Yesterday I saw an interview with veteran golfer Tom Watson on TV. At one point, talking about his first British Open win, he said "I was hitting the ball solidly", later on in the interview he corrected himself on the fly , saying "I hit solid...no, solidly". At least somebody in the golf world knows how to speak proper English. "Hit" is a verb, and needs an adverb modifier - usually ending in "ly". How many times do we hear and read golf pros (and far worse, writers) say "hit it solid" or "hits it pure". Terrible stuff... Thanks Tom!

Not really a rant but. just a question: Do you have to be a total knob-head to be in the government? Example one: Sports Ministar, Hugh Robertson, has suggested that golf clubs that don't allow lady members should be barred from hosting THE Open Championship ( I use capital letters because there is no such thing as the British Open, it is considered THE Major Championship). Just had the opportunity to watch the last round of the 2012 British Open. Australian Adam Scott had a five shot lead with six holes to play, a dead certainty when Adam had Tiger Woods former caddy on the bag with him. Adam then lost by a stroke to "The Big Easy" Ernie Els. Steve Williams, Scott's caddy should have been sacked on the 18th green. For a bloke who is supposed to know how to get his man to the finish line his "so called" expert advice was sadly lacking. Williams has has made a lot of money on the back of Woods but has been exposed in my view. Scott is ranked five in the world, he can make golfs highest ranking if he gets rid of the passenger on the bag.

My fave Ryder Cup moment came when Justin Rose sank a L-O-N-G putt to tie Phil Mickelson on the 17th hole, and Phil responded with a big smile and a thumbs-up. That's golf and that's sports. Rose also birdied No. 18 to win the match and continue Europe's giant comeback. Again Mickelson grinned and whacked Rose's shoulder. Way to go, Phil! (P.S. -- Rose led most of the British Open and lost at the end.)

It is a club where the extremely powerful go and conduct business, then go out and play 18. Look at the resumes of the two women who are now members. If this is the standard that women have to achieve to be a member, your average women golfer is out of luck. Perhaps it would have been more beneficial for Ms. Rice to hold a press conference declining the invitation to membership. Maybe. This move just stinks of hidden agendas masked by public perception. Oh, and next years British Open is held at an all male club. Will we be discussing this issue then?

A UTC (University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for my cruise ship friends) student just won the US Amateur golf championship! That's the Nobel prize of amateur golf. Steven Fox. He was seeded near the bottom. 63rd or so. The golf team has always been good at UTC thanks to a great coach but that is just outstanding. Now he'll be invited to the Masters, US Open, British Open, and will have a 10-year exemption into the US Amateur. Unless he turns pro. He doesn't have a great swing and admits he doesn't like to practice. My brother says he wouldn't make it on the PGA tour. I say go for it. You only go around once. And he won the US Amateur!

August 13th, is Ben Hogan's birthday. Hogan along with Sam Snead and Byron Nelson were all born in 1912. In 1953 Hogan won the U.S. Open The Masters, and the (British) Open. He did not compete in the PGA due to it conflicting with the (British) Open. He played only one British Open, it was in 1953 at Carnoustie, which he won. Just think, Hogan might have been the best course manager, Snead possibly one of the best golf swings, and Nelson the straightest hitter who still holds the records for most consecutive tournaments won. All born in 1912.
