Roger Federer maintained his record of never having lost in the Australian Open first round Monday as he started his quest to become only the second man in Australian Open history to win five titles. Roy Emerson won his sixth crown in 1967. The second seed, a winner of 17 Grand Slam championships, defeated Yen-Hsun Lu 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 during the night session on Rod Laver Arena. He will next challenge Simone Bolelli, who was a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 winner over Juan Monaco. Federer, who has reached the Australian Open semi-finals for 11 straight years, struck 26 forehand winners in the pair's third meeting. Lu, who won his third ATP World Tour doubles title at the Aircel Chennai Open (w/Marray), could not convert any of his four break point opportunities. The 33-year-old Federer captured his 83rd tour-level title at the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp (d. Raonic) for his 1,000th career match win. Djokovic, Serena Williams Win At Australian Open by The Associated Press January 13, 2014 5:18 PM MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A rusty Novak Djokovic began his bid for a fourth consecutive Australian Open title on Monday with a win over Lukas Lacko while Serena Williams looked as polished as ever beating Australian teenager Ashleigh Barty. With his new coach and six-time Grand Slam singles champion Boris Becker watching him during an official match for the first time, Djokovic appeared tentative early against the Slovakian player, who often appeared content to keep the ball in play. But as the second-seeded Djokovic's patience level began to drop, his skill level stepped up. He stayed on course for a fifth Australian title with a 6-5, 7-6 (2), 6-1 win, hoping to be the first man to achieve that feat since the Open Era began in 1968. Top-ranked Williams won her 23rd consecutive match — including 18 at the end of last season and four last week in winning the Brisbane International — after beating Barty ...
A pair of doddering 32-year-olds will give it a go in the hot cauldron of Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday. Lleyton Hewitt is playing his 18th consecutive Australian Open and Roger Federer his 57th Grand Slam event in a row, breaking the record he shared with Wayne Ferreira of South Africa. Hewitt made his tournament debut in another millennium – 1997. “It’s the only time I’ve never played on Rod Laver Arena,” he laughed, “my only singles match on an outside court.” ‘Rusty’ from Adelaide is 30-17 at Melbourne Park and has only once made it past the round of 16 – losing the 2005 final to Marat Safin. His victory over Federer in the Brisbane International final two weeks ago has been a boost. “My ball striking at the moment is as good as it’s been in a long time,” he said. Hewitt is 3-3 head-to-head with this afternoon’s opponent, 29-year-old Andreas Seppi, but the Italian has not won a match in 2014, while Hewitt is 5-0. Federer, 4-1 this year, is no longer the force he was circa 2004 ...

Ready and Willing World number one Serena Williams is reportedly gunning to match former world number ones Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova by winning an 18th Grand Slam title at the upcoming Australian Open. The American ace cemented her dominance of the sport with 11 titles last year, including the US and French Opens, and picked up where she left off by winning the Brisbane International on Saturday. According to Sport24, Williams, who will be entering the season-opening Grand Slam as red-hot favourite, however, said that she feels she still has room for improvement if she wants to win the Open.

Lleyton Hewitt is celebrating his upset win over Roger Federer in the final of the Brisbane International, saying he's feeling his best in years
I still can't believe Lleyton Hewitt won the Brisbane International.
Lleyton Hewitt will go into the Australian Open as the player the top seeds will hope to avoid in the first round, after digging into his famed store of resolve to beat Roger Federer in the Brisbane International final on Sunday.
Will you remember where you were when Australia won the Ashes 5-0 yesterday, after just 3 days? Maybe you're more of a tennis fan and you were cheering on Lleyton Hewitt's win over Roger Federer at the Brisbane International? Either way, it was a big day in Australian sport. Perhaps it's something you'll tell the grandkids about in years to come. Imagine being at one of those events... maybe you were! Emma Cillekens would like to hear about the most memorable sporting event you've been at.
Congratulations to Lleyton Hewitt for his amazing win over Roger Federer in the Brisbane International!
The early clues for Lleyton Hewitt's stunning 6-1 4-6 6-3 upset of Swiss great Roger Federer in the Brisbane International decider lay in the opening game on Pat Rafter Arena.
To everyone's surprise (even his) Lley Lley beat universally recognised tennis GOAT Roger Federer in a gutsy performance at the Brisbane International.

C'MON! Lleyton Hewitt, remember him? The little Aussie battler - ranked 60th - has beaten Roger Federer 6-1 4-6 6-3 at the Brisbane International final... a good day for Australian sport!

Roger Federer loses in the Brisbane International final
An extremely hot day yesterday at the Brisbane International tennis, but we all survived. Looking forward to the Men's final today - should be very exciting & I think very noisy in Pat Rafter Arena, the crowd won't really know who to barrack for. It should also be a bit cooler.

Roger Federer showed shreds of evidence of Stefan Edberg's influence as he got his 2014 season underway, advancing to the Brisbane International quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jarkko Nieminen on Wednesday. Federer worked briefly with Edberg in the offseason and will again use the six-time major winner as a coach in Melbourne as he tries to end his Grand Slam drought at the Australian Open this month. The 32-year-old Swiss star is not suddenly reinforcing a serve-volley mindset, but he did venture to the net with good effect in his second-round match against Nieminen — he had a first-round bye — as he honed certain parts of his game. "I've been serving OK, my forehand is going well, my movement is OK, I'm seeing the ball OK," said Federer, who won the last of his 17 Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon in 2012. "I expect to play a bit better in the next match, even though today was already very good for a first match in so many weeks." After a day of injury withdrawals in the women's draw, second-see ...

Nick Kyrgios pulled out of the Brisbane International with a right shoulder injury on yesterday night, putting his Australian Open hopes at risk. The teenager was to begin his Brisbane campaign with a round-one assignment against in-form countryman Matt Ebden on today. Kyrgios also made a late withdrawal from the Australian Open play-offs at the start of December with an elbow injury. The world Number 182 was a near certainty to be given wildcard into the Australian Open but with wildcards being announced later this week, that now looks unlikley.
I'm finishing this year with a lesson in mastery. Today I'll be watching Serena Williams and Roger Federer at the Brisbane International
Every tennis fan knows it can be bittersweet to watch two favourite players compete against each other – and an all-Aussie encounter at the Brisbane International on Tuesday is bound to create that “wish-nobody-had-to-lose” feeling. It’s a sentiment that would no doubt be echoed by Lleyton Hewitt, when he and Thanasi Kokkinakis open the night session on Pat Rafter Arena. Having set a tremendous standard with his pair of Grand Slam titles, world No.1 ranking and spirited Davis Cup performances in a long career, the older Australian has made no secret of his desire to see young Australian players striving for similar highs. While he’s 15 years Kokkinakis’ senior, Hewitt shares much in common with the younger South Australian – most significantly, strong ambition and a passion that saw Kokkinakis win three matches against vastly more experienced opponents to qualify for his first ATP event in Brisbane. Their first-round match is bound to be an intriguing one. Another Aussie, Sam Groth, will clo ...

A public school teacher was arrested today at Brisbane International Airport as he attempted to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a compass, a slide-rule and a calculator. At a morning press conference, Attorney General Nicola Roxon said she believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement. She did not identify the man, who has been charged by the Australian Federal Police with carrying weapons of math instruction. 'Al-Gebra is a problem for us', the Attorney General said. 'They derive solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values.' They use secret code names like "X" and "Y" and refer to themselves as "unknowns" but we have determined that they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philosopher Isosceles used to say, "There are 3 sides to every triangle." When asked to comment on the arrest, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said, "If Darwin had wanted us to ...
