A Brief History of Islam (part 2 of 5): The Hijrah After Muhammad had preached publicly for more than a decade, the opposition to him reached such a high pitch that, fearful for their safety, he sent some of his adherents to Ethiopia. There, the Christian ruler extended protection to them, the memory of which has been cherished by Muslims ever since. But in Mecca the persecution worsened. Muhammad’s followers were harassed, abused, and even tortured. At last, seventy of Muhammad’s followers set off by his orders to the northern town of Yathrib, in the hope of establishing a news stage of the Islamic movement. This city which was later to be renamed Medina (“The City”). Later, in the early fall of 622, he, with his closest friend, Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq, set off to join the emigrants. This event coincided with the leaders in Mecca plotting, to kill him. In Mecca, the plotters arrived at Muhammad’s home to find that his cousin, ‘Ali, had taken his place in bed. Enraged, the Meccans set a pr ...
Brief History of COCIN Youth Fellowship This COCIN Youth Fellowship started as a movement in Borno RCC in 1970 with the aim of catering for the social and spiritual needs of older youths in the church. The aim of the Fellowship includes (1) To win (2) To train (3) To send the youth out for Christ. Following huge success of the Fellowship in RCC Borno, COCIN convened the first meeting of church district representatives in youth work in August, 1972 to deliberate on the growth of the work. The General Church Council (GCC), seeing the importance of the new ministry among young people, in 1974 mandated Rev. Peter J. Dominy and Mr. Simon Johnson to visit the district and advice the church on the best approach to youth work. Their work was short lived and Rev. Daniel Bitrus was in 1975 appointed to continue from where they stopped. As events continue to work in favour of the work, the GCC decided in 1979 to appoint the first full time Youth Director in the person of Rev. Seth Nden (past General Secretary). Fro ...
A Brief History of the King James Bible   By Dr. Laurence M. Vance     As the reign of Elizabeth (1558-1603) was coming to a close, we find a draft for an act of Parliament for a new version of the Bible: "An act for the reducing of diversities of bibles now extant in the English tongue to one settled vulgar translated from the original." The Bishop's Bible of 1568, although it may have eclipsed the Great Bible, was still rivaled by the Geneva Bible. Nothing ever became of this draft during the reign of Elizabeth, who died in 1603, and was succeeded by James 1, as the throne passed from the Tudors to the Stuarts. James was at that time James VI of Scotland, and had been for thirty-seven years. He was born during the period between the Geneva and the Bishop's Bible.   One of the first things done by the new king was the calling of the Hampton Court Conference in January of 1604 "for the hearing, and for the determining, things pretended to be amiss in the church." Here ...

A Brief History of Poulett House now Alexandra Hotel and Restaurant – Built 1735 (Architect unknown) By tradition Poulett House (now the Alexandra Hotel and Restaurant) was built as a dower house for the Countess but it would appear that it was to be the semi-retirement residence for the 1st Earl and Countess Poulett. It was not a large house and stood in a mere three acre plot and could not compare with their mansion a day’s ride at Hinton St. George. There seem to have been no more than three main bedrooms and five other rooms on the upper floor. A large basement housed wine cellars and stores. The current hotel sitting room was the dining room and the room above (room 12) a drawing room. Built of stone with a slated roof the house had a lodge entrance and gates opening into the familiar cobbled yard with stabling for four horses (now Poulett Hall). Between the garden and the path along the shore from the town to the Cobb, known as ‘The Walk’, there was a sloping meadow.     Taken from the Pl ...
THE THIRD MAJOR SIGN OF ENDTIME RETURN OF PROPHET JESUS Brief History of Prophet Jesus Due to the fact that the Jews had become deaf and blind to the words of God and deviated from the teachings of Moses and the right path, Allah honoured Jesus with Prophethood and sent him as a messenger to the children of Israel. Bearing all hardships Prophet Jesus spent all day and night conveying the message of Allah. Unfortunately, in spite of his tremendous effort the children of Israel did not respond and accept the message. Seeing that the poor and weak were becoming inclined towards him and fearing they would lose their leadership the Jews secretly tried to kill him. However Allah saved Prophet Jesus from their wicked scheme and gave him greater dignity by raising him alive to the heavens. Allah says in the Quran, "They did not kill him and nor did they crucify him but the resemblance of him (Jesus ) was put over another man and those who differ there in, are in doubt. They have no certain knowledge. They are fol ...
Brief History of Kenya’s political and tribal problems While a lot of people were chanting Raila Odinga and hopeful that he would become Kenya’s fourth president, I had some reservations. For some of you who may not be well versed with Kenya’s history, here is a brief highlight The problem of Kenya started way back as a result of political ego that culminated into personal beef between Raila Odinga’s father – Oginga Odinga and Uhuru Keyata’s father Jomo Kenyata In 1911, Raila Odinga’s father - Jaramogi Ajuma Oginga Odinga a Luo Chieftain became a prominent figure in Kenya's struggle for independence. He later served as Kenya's first Vice-President, and thereafter as opposition leader. Jaramogi Ajuma Oginga Odinga for some reason renounced his Christian names and became known as Oginga Odinga. In 1960, together with Tom Mboya, he joined Kenya African National Union (KANU). When Kenya became a Republic in 1964, he was its first Vice-President. Beginning of the problem As Vice-President he did ...
A Brief History on the Hammond Organ: it is interesting to note the most famous organ of all time, the Hammond, (particularly the B3), whose sound is still found in mainstream pop music was invented by a man who self-admittedly had no musical abilities what-so-ever, and was, in fact, quite tone deaf. It is also of interest to note that while the names B3 and Leslie are almost synonymous, the inventor of the Hammond organ, Laurens Hammond, hated the sound of Leslie speakers and when asked about Leslie Speakers, Hammond's almost irrational response was, "I never intended for my organs to sound that way. " --Sweetwater Sounds
Brief History of Urban Cooperative Banks in India The term Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs), though not formally defined, refers to primary cooperative banks located in urban and semi-urban areas. These banks, till 1996, were allowed to lend money only for non-agricultural purposes. This distinction does not hold today. These banks were traditionally centred around communities, localities work place groups. They essentially lent to small borrowers and businesses. Today, their scope of operations has widened considerably. The origins of the urban cooperative banking movement in India can be traced to the close of nineteenth century when, inspired by the success of the experiments related to the cooperative movement in Britain and the cooperative credit movement in Germany such societies were set up in India. Cooperative societies are based on the principles of cooperation, - mutual help, democratic decision making and open membership. Cooperatives represented a new and alternative approach to organisaton as ...

So I'm supposed to go to court April 24th for something I didn't even actually witness. I tried to get out of it by explaining I didn't see anything, but they still want me to show up and say that much. Stupid. So since it's a waste of my time, I'm going to use it as a chance to make a point. As an atheist, I feel I should not have to be sworn in using a bible. I feel that that is an insult to my sensibilities and the religious freedoms we are supposed to have in this country. What book should I demand to use instead? In the 2nd chapter of John's first epistle, John writes a mini essay on aspects of wide concern including the ultimate goal(s) of man's strife. He embarks on a series of philosophical questions whose ultimate aim is to draw one's path towards infinity. Having lived in a strong relationship with Christ for many years, John, indirectly, mentions that man's ultimate triumph is achieved in the following three aspects: (1) Complete knowledge, (2) Unconditional love and (3) Truth. For many years, man have considered his perfection to be attained in having Complete knowledge, I quote for Stephen Hawking his very popular sentence by which he concludes his Brief History of Time: “If we do discover a complete theory, it should in time be understandable in broad principle by everyone, not just a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it w ...

A Brief History of Kachin People The Kachins, one of the eight major ethnic groups in Burma, are one rugged people who live in the northern hills of Burma along the tail of the Himalaya mountain ranges. They are known to be the last ethnic group to have migrated into Burma after the Shans, the second largest group in Burma. The Kachins are comprised of six sub-groups: Jinghpaw, Lawngwaw, Lashi, Zaiwa, Rawang, and Lisu. All these sub-groups speak their own dialects but share identical traditions, customs, and practices. The Kachins in Burma are estimated to number between 1 - 1.5 million. The majority of Kachins live mainly in northern Burma whereas over 300,000 and 7,000 Kachins can also be found in parts of Yunan province in China and Assam State in India respectively. The Christian missionaries from the U.S., the Italian and Irish Catholic priests and nuns came to spread Christianity among Kachins during the British rule of Burma. Dr. Ola Hanson, an American Baptist missionary, invented a writing system ...
Brief History and Life of Syed Ibrahim Mallick Biya (RA) Syed Ibrahim Mallick Biya was a distinguished military general and a famous Sufi of the 14th Century A.D. He was given the coveted title of Mallick by the Sultan and became famous as Mallick Biya. Friday, August 18, 2006 6:11 PMFriday, August 18, 2006 11:38 AMChishtia Awaisia Rule (spiritual silsila) It is indeed a difficult task to write about Hazrat Babaji's personality and zikr-e-sultani. However, I will try to write something according to how I have understood what zikr-e-sultani is and what different aspects of Hazrat Babaji's life are? I will also give brief introduction of Hazrat Babaji's rule (Chishtia Awaisia). Brief History of Chishti Rule (Silsila) First, I would like to say a few words about the Chishti rule itself because the very name of Hazrat Babaji's rule - Chishtia Awaisia - is derived from this name. Generally people think that Chishti rule started from Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti. It is not correct. Hazrat Babar Badshah Sahib (the oldest son of Hazrat Babaji) once explained that the Chishti rule (silsila) started from Hazrat Abu-Ishaq Shami. His Murshid gave him the name of Abu Ishaq Chishti. He also said to him that everyone who would join your silsila (rule) would be know ...

Brief History: The princely state of Bahawalpur was founded in 1802 by Nawab Mohammad Bahawal Khan II. The state acceded to Pakistan on 7 October 1947 when Nawab Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi V decided to join Pakistan. Bahawalpur became a province of Pakistan in 1952 and was merged into the province of West Pakistan on 14 October 1955. When West Pakistan was divided into four provinces (Sindh, Balochistan, NWFP, and Punjab), Bahawalpur was merged into Punjab. Bahawalpur is located south of the Sutlej River and lies in the Cholistan region near the Thar Desert. Bahawalpur is known for its famous palaces such as the Noor Mahal, Sadiq Ghar Palace, and Darbar Mahal, as well as the ancient fort of Derawar in the Cholistan Desert. The city is located near the historical and ancient town of Uch. Lal Suhanra National Park, a natural Safari Park, is also located in Bahawalpur.
A Brief History of the Republican Party: 1854 - Major schisms occurred in all major political Parties over the issue of slavery and immigration. The Know-Nothing Party formed over the influx of 3 million new immigrants, mainly Catholics. The Know-Nothings were avidly anti-Catholic and so formed to make it harder for these foreigners to become citizens. The long standing Democrat Party lost a large number of members after the passage of the Nebraska Act that allowed for slavery to move into the western territories. Anti-extension Democrats left the Party en masse to seek others that were more favorable; thus leaving the Democrat Party in the primary control of the Southern Democrats. The Whig Party of Abraham Lincoln, William Seward, and Salmon Chase also split over this same issue. Because of these changes, Wisconsin witnessed a group of anti-slavery men form a Party called the Republicans; which took the North by storm. The Republicans drew from all these disenfranchised voters with claims such as: The R ...

A Brief History of U.S.-Grown Rice It’s hard to imagine a more global cuisine staple than rice, a sustaining food for nearly 2/3 of the world’s population. Rice cultivation originated in China more than 5,000 years ago. From Asia, rice spread to ancient Greece and on to the Nile delta, eventually reaching the New World in the 17th century. Early American colonists began cultivating rice quite by accident. In 1685, a storm-battered ship from Madagascar reached Charles Towne harbor in South Carolina. As a gift for repairing the ship, the ship’s captain gave local planters a small quantity of “Golden Seede Rice.” Fresh-water marshes of the Carolinas and Georgia proved ideal growing environments for rice production. In truth, the rich, wet flood plains could grow little else. By 1700, rice had become a major crop for colonists. Bills of sale from that year record that 300 tons of “Carolina Golde Rice” was shipped to England. The substantial hand-labor requirements of growing rice led to the plan ...
Brief History and Preface Been A long time coming. We all Know that The Beatles wanted that revolution with us, And yet, Not the kind of revolution which most people had in mind or were prepared to attempt or make. When we say the word "Revolution", what exactly do we mean by that, and what does the world hear when we say it? Out of lack of clarity and lucidity the Revolution stalled out for 40 years. But the Autoimmune system of humanity has been triggered once again, and Corporate Oligarchy , as a Disease,is killing us softly, as Doomsday Clock after Doomsday Clock ticks down the minutes and hours and months and years, and entropy winds us down, Civilization is on Fire, and in fact the American Dream is already dead, its just so big and large and vacant that it doesn't quite know it yet. Impossible Revolution; (Why we haven't had a revolution yet, why there are no completely successful social movements, and why This new Awakening must fail unless it becomes meaningfully enlightened)We haven't had a r ...
Brief History must read: During the flight from Anandpur, when the Sikhs, having been promised safe passage to Punjab, Sahibzada Fateh Singh was, along with his elder brother Zorawar Singh, put under the care of his grandmother, Mata Gujari Kaur ji, Unfortunately in the confusion of the rain swollen Sarsa (normally little more than a creek) and an attack by pursuers, the Guru's two youngest sons and their Grandmother were separated from the main body of Sikhs. However, managing to get across they were befriended by one of the Guru's former cooks. Later betrayed and handed off by the authorities of the small village where they had been given sanctuary, they were handed over to agents of Wazir Khan and carted off to Sirhind and placed under arrest in the Khan's Thanda Burj (cold tower). While the Thanda Burj was built to capture the cool night breezes of air drawn over water channels in the areas hot summers, during the dead of winter the unheated burj offered no comfort for the Guru's mother and sons. A Brief History of the Angry Chicken By Chris BeOnkey Erected at the end of the Civil War, Old Main was capped with an Angry Chicken to keep an ever watchful eye to the South, and guard against post-war invasion. As one of the North's southern-most strongholds, Old Main might well have been a target for uppity confederates who still had the war-bug firmly lodged in the lowest regions of their digestive system if it weren't for the Angry Chicken. Looming high overhead, the four-faced fowl struck terror in all who passed through it's shadow. Many a southern militiamen were slain at the tip of the Chicken's beak. As the North conceded that the South was no longer a threat, and that they made some bang'n iced tea, Old Main and it's Angry Chicken dome-piece were without purpose. The Chicken spent some time as a lighthouse before ultimately realizing there was no need for a lighthouse in a landlocked state. Old Main failed miserably as a co-ed housing complex (and to this day still only houses female occupants) ...
A Brief History of Lodge St James 256 Lodge St James was erected in 1841, fell into dormancy in 1859 and reconstituted in 1891. Very little is known of the history of the Lodge during the first part of its life from 1841 to 1859. However, one interesting fact emerges. From the Royal Grand Conclave List of Encampments, it states that a Charter No 39 was issued to the Knights at Peterhead under the title of St James. This Charter was issued on 2nd October 1816 . Lodge St James was reformed in 1890 following a dispute within the Keith Lodge No 56. The election of the RWM to the Keith Lodge was disputed by a number of Brethren - the dispute reached extraordinary proportions and on the 5th January 1891 certain members of the Keith Lodge forwarded a letter to the Provincial Grand Master requesting the resuscitation of Lodge St James. A meeting of likeminded Brethren was held in the Northern Hotel on Saturday 31st January 1891 with the aim of resuscitating Lodge St James No 33. The Lodge was eventually chartered ...
1. A Brief History of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church Ethiopia, the land of Judeo-Christianity, is one of the most ancient predominantly Christian countries of the world. It is marked with a fascinating history, unique civilization, culture and religious life. The Book of Genesis recounts: “And the name of the second river is Ghion: the same is it that compasses the whole land of Ethiopia” (Geneses 2:13). The Psalmist David also says: “Let Ethiopia hasten to stretch out her hands to God” (Psalms 68:31). Furthermore, historical and archaeological evidences reveal another interesting fact that Ethiopia is the only African country, which has developed its own alphabet and written language. The ancient Greek poets and historians such as Homer, referred to them as, “Blameless Race” when speaking of this great land and its people. Herodotus also referred to the country’s landscape as the area south of Egypt and around the Red Sea extending as far as the Indian Ocean. He said that Ethiopians “lived ...
A Brief History of the Maltese language Placed between Europe and Africa, Malta has bridged the two continents over the millennia, with settlers from both directions leaving traces of their presence. Its position in the central southern Mediterranean has also given it a strategic significance which attracted successive external powers striving to dominate the region. As a result its culture and language reflect layers of different influences to an extraordinary extent. Given that Malta lies less than 60 miles south of Sicily it is unsurprising that for about a thousand years it was part of the Roman Empire, with political control moving to Constantinople when the empire was divided in ad 329. Malta's Roman phase ended in ad 870 when Arab invaders overwhelmed the Byzantine garrison. There then seems to have been a hiatus of nearly 200 years during which the island was left virtually unpopulated. It was not colonized until 1048. A few years later, in 1091, the island came under Norman rule though initially ...
Brief History of the O'Bannon Clan By Joseph E. Gannon WGT Managing Editor An O'Bannon family coat of arms. Buy it now, here. Brien Boru O'Bannon is apparently the first notable O'Bannon to enter the American colonies, and one would be hard pressed to come up with a more distinctly Irish name than his. His most renowned descendant is Marine hero Presley Neville O'Bannon. Brien was born in County Tipperary about 1683. He arrived in Harper's Ferry, then in Virginia, in 1702. It was said that he "fled to America", though none of his descendants have yet discovered a reason. The Penal Laws were taking their awful effect in Ireland then, however, and many would be leaving the island in the coming century. Once freed from the constraints of persecution in Ireland, Brien flourished. In 1760, two years before he died in Fauquier County, in Virginia's piedmont, he made out a will in which he left more than 1,200 acres of land to his sons and grandsons. (Daughters and granddaughters were expected to marry into thei ...

Brief History of the Ghana Air Force Air Force The Ghana Air Force started on 24 July 1959 as a Flying Training School with Israeli instructors and technicians. The School was established as a cradle of a service to complement the 2 other Services that is the Army and the Navy, to facilitate the realisation of Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s vision of the “Total Liberation of the African Continent”. The Service later got some technical aid in the form of instructors, equipment, training and aircraft from sources such as India, Pakistan, Canada, Britain, USA and USSR. At its inception, an Indian officer, Air Commodore Jaswant Singh was appointed the first Chief of Air Staff (CAS). Until early 1965 when an offensive support element was added with the acquisition of Fighter Ground Attack (FGA) aircraft from Italy, the Ghana Air Force was basically to provide transport support for ground and naval forces and was therefore made up of solely transport squadron. Today the Ghana Air Force has developed both transport .. ...
Brief History of west champaran West Champaran District was carved out of the old Champaran District in the year 1972 as a result of re-organization of the District in the state. It was formerly a subdivision of Saran District and then Champaran District with its Head quarters as Bettiah. It is said that Bettiah got its name from Baint (Cane) plants commonly found in this district. The name Champaran is a degenerate form of Champaka aranya, a name which dates back to the time when the district was a tract of the forest of Champa (Magnolia) trees & was the abode of solitary asectics. As per District Gazetteer, it seems probable that Champaran was occupied at an early period by races of Aryan descent and formed part of the country in which the Videha empire ruled. After the fall of Videhan empire the district formed part of the Vrijjain oligarchical republic with its capital at Vaishali of which Lichhavis were the most powerful and prominent. Brief History of Candy Canes According to a popular account, in 1672, in Cologne, Germany, the choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral, wishing to remedy the noise caused by children in his church during the Living Crèche tradition of Christmas Eve, asked a local candy maker for some sweet sticks for them.In order to justify the practice of giving candy to children during worship services, he asked the candy maker to add a crook to the top of each stick, which would help children remember the shepherds who paid visit to infant Jesus. In addition, he used the white colour of the converted sticks to teach children about the Christian belief in the sinless life of Jesus. From Germany, the candy canes spread to other parts of Europe, where they were handed out during plays reenacting the Nativity. A recipe for straight peppermint candy sticks, white with colored stripes, was published in 1844. The candy cane has been mentioned in literature since 1866, was first mentioned in association with Christmas in 1874, and ...
BETTMANN / CORBIS The proclamation reaches the South where a family of slaves receives news of their emancipation. Email Print Share Reprints Follow is a common misconception among Americans that Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves with a stroke of his pen. Yet the Emancipation Proclamation, which went into effect on Jan. 1, 1863, did no such thing — or, at least, it didn't do a very good job of it. Two and a half years later, on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers sailed into Galveston, Texas, announced the end of the Civil War, and read aloud a general order freeing the quarter-million slaves residing in the state. It's likely that none of them had any idea that they had actually been freed more than two years before. It was truly a day of mass emancipation. It has become known as Juneteenth. (Read "A Brief History of Memorial Day.) Since then, Juneteenth has been a day of celebration for many African Americans, a de facto second Independence Day commemorating the end of slavery and a first step toward inclusi ...

Our History: A Brief History of the American Red Cross . As one of the nation’s premier humanitarian organizations, the American Red Cross is dedicated to helping people in need throughout the United States and, in association with other Red Cross networks, throughout the world. We depend on the many generous contributions of time, blood, and money from the American public to support our lifesaving services and programs. Clara Barton and a circle of her acquaintances founded the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. on May 21, 1881. Barton first heard of the Swiss-inspired global Red Cross network while visiting Europe following the Civil War. Returning home, she campaigned for an American Red Cross and for ratification of the Geneva Convention protecting the war-injured, which the United States ratified in 1882. Barton led the Red Cross for 23 years, during which time we conducted our first domestic and overseas disaster relief efforts, aided the United States military during the Spanish-American War, ...
Instead of a funny comic today, how about a 12 page partial dissertation on the history of comics from the beginning of time to 1986? A Brief History of Line: the history of the cartoon and how comics reflect and shape their time The cartoon, by means of pictures and images, has been used through out history to chronicle and/or comment on important events, people, and issues of their time periods. When one thinks of comics, images of children reading superhero books or perhaps the back section of the morning paper may pop into the thinker's head. Comics often delve into the realm of fantasy, and because of that, comics may seem to the outside observer as a means of escaping reality. The “comic-book nerd” is represented in popular culture as someone who uses comics to escape their comically-tragic lives of social awkwardness and inability to get a significant other. One of the most famous examples is “comic-book guy” on “The Simpsons,” a cartoon that ironically, mocks people who are fans of c . ...

Prayer Line! “WHY I HAVE CHOSEN CHRISTIANITY ABOVE EVERY OTHER BELIEFS” have read to find out from our yesterday`s text the position of the best mind that the science world has ever produced. From the text we have read to understand that Albert Einstein had concerned himself on what could have been in the mind of God when He was creating the universe and beyond. Another great mind by the name Stephen Hawking, though "inconsistent" based on his several interviews has this to say. In his bestselling 1988 book, A Brief History of Time, Hawking drew on the device so beloved of Einstein, when he described what it would mean for scientists to develop a "theory of everything" – a set of equations that described every particle and force in the entire universe. "IT WOULD BE THE ULTIMATE TRIUMPH OF HUMAN REASON-FOR THEN WE SHOULD KNOW THE MIND OF GOD.” Quote! We would like to list some of the foremost scientists who have expressed their faiths in Christ Jesus as their Lord and Savior. As you get to know th ...
A Brief History of Corruption in India Dr William Gould By Dr William Gould ‘Merely shouting from the house tops that everybody is corrupt creates an atmosphere of corruption. People feel they are in a climate of corruption and they get corrupted themselves.’ The words of Jawaharlal Nehru, spoken shortly after India’s independence from British rule, seem particularly apt given the overtly Gandhian style of today’s anti-corruption crusader, Anna Hazare. But for most Indians, Hazare’s movement has produced few surprises: there is a long-standing popular critique of the country’s apparently growing crisis of corruption that cuts across nearly every strata of society. Popular resignation about the permanence of corruption is partly explained by the political purchase of ‘corruption’ as an idea and a term. Accusations of corruption have historically been wielded as a political weapon – a means of tarnishing rivals in the right circumstances. During India’s very first General Election in 195 ...

Brief History of San Francisco,Quezon Source:www.quezon.gov.ph Our municipality has no records of historical events that happened before the Spanish discovery of the Islands in the year 1521. However, it seems apparent that even before such date Chinese traders had reached our place on account of the discovery just recently of several utensils composed of jars, vases, bowls, plates, cups, saucers and jewelries dug in several places along the shores of San Francisco, Quezon. Inscriptions are found especially in the jars and upon proper studies they appear to be the symbol of the Ming Dynasty. During the Spanish period, like other villages, our village had been the subject of frequent attack by non- Christian marauders. In the year 1764, safety measures were made by the inhabitants especially those in sitio Matalola, Maayas-as and Mayabok by concentrating themselves in a single place called May Campana, situated in sitio Kuling the place being in the interior part of the Bondok region. A Brief History of “Shrove Tuesday” Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, the last day of what was once called “Shrovetide,” originally a three-day period before the beginning of Lent. Eventually, the previous Thursday through Saturday was added to make a full week. The word “shrove,” is from the Anglo-Saxon “to write down,” or “prescribe,” as in to prescribe a particular penance after confession. Shrovetide itself is the English equivalent of what became known in the greater part of Southern Europe, and eventually the Americas, as the “Carnival.” Strangely enough, this word, in spite of wild activities to the contrary, is derived from the Latin term for “taking away of the flesh" (carneum levare). The original idea was that during the week immediately before Lent everyone would go to his priest and confess his sins, and the priest would in turn prescribe or “shrive” what he needs to do in the way of penance during the upcoming Lenten season. Most of the time this m ...
Assignment sa MAPEH A Brief History of Alcohol Many archaeologists believe that wine made from grapes was a part of man’s regular diet as many as 10,000 years back. Surprisingly, it is also believed that other kinds of alcohol like beer and mead existed even before. Along the way developed various social uses for the intoxicating drink, including pepping up men before a battle, calming fights, closing a deal and seduction. Many of these traditions associated with alcohol are still in existence. Prehistoric man is known to have made beer from grain and water even before the method of making bread was discovered. The Greek, Norse, Egyptian and Babylonian history has proof of production and consumption of alcohol. In fact the Egyptians created a straw to drink beer that contained wheat husk. Clay tablets with more than 20 detailed recipes have been found in the remains of the Babylonian civilization. The earliest records of alcohol consumption in Chinese civilization go back to 800 B.C. A Brief History of Blues and BBQ OR How I Learned to Cry Over the Perfect Bite What are the Blues? No smart *** not the color. But, what are the Blues as pertaining to the music that influenced that we all listen to today in common US culture? The ‘Blues’ or the common thread that has shaped American culture more than any other influence (other than…later, we’ll get to that). The very shape we have come to be, the very ‘us-ness’ as it were, can be traced to the longing, and heartfelt loss, brought about in chant, then in song, of our shared long sad story. And, of course, what we do with that makes us all too ‘human’, and closer together. In its simplest most common denominator, Blues are the story of those that are sad. Yeah, big spoiler there. Those that have had troubles, those that have had heart ache, those that have had all taken away, sing the Blues. At first (in America), it was the chants of lament of those captured and sold to hard labor for the birth of a Nation. Simpl ...
Brief History of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe (The Patroness of Knights of Columbus) The well authenticated story of the five apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary is briefly related here: 1st Apparition: At dawn on December 9, 1531, Juan Diego, an Indian convert, was going to Tlatelolco to attend catechism class and hear the Mass. As he was passing Tepeyac Hill, he saw a brilliant light on the summit and heard the strains of celestial music. Filled with wonder, he stopped. Then he heard a feminine voice asking him to ascend. When he reached the top he saw the Blessed Virgin Mary standing in the midst of a glorious light, in heavenly splendor. The beauty of her youthful countenance and her look of loving kindness filled Juan Diego with unspeakable happiness as he listened to the words which she spoke to him in his native language. She told him she was the perfect and eternal Virgin Mary, Mother of the true God, and made known to him her desire that a shrine be built there where she could demo ...
Locating and Recruiting the Best Prospects by Randy Gage   In his brilliant book, "A Brief History of Time," Professor Stephen Hawking opens with the story of a well-known scientist who gave a public lecture on astronomy. The scientist described how the moon orbits the earth, the earth orbits the sun, and how our solar system orbits around the center of the galaxy. When he finished, a little old lady got up and said, "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise."   The scientist gave a knowing smile and replied, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever," she replied. "But it's turtles all the way down!"   We all know people like that little old lady. The point is, why try to convince them otherwise? If they believe that the universe is a big stack of turtles - or that all network marketing opportunities are illegal pyramids - nothing you present to the contrary is going to change their belief.  So a ...

A Brief History of Money = The Origins of Money The word money derives from the Latin 'moneta' - the first Roman coinage was minted at the temple of Juno Moneta in 344BC. Before coinage, various objects such as cattle, pig's teeth and shells had been used as money. For most of its history money has taken the form of coins made of precious metal. The money, therefore, had intrinsic value. Many of the units of modern money recall their origin in amounts of precious metal; for example, the pound sterling was originally the Roman pound (twelves ounces) of silver. = The Beginning of Banking in Britain In Britain, the modern age of banking began in 1640 when King Charles I, needing cash to pay the (English) army that he was raising against Scotland (of which he was also king!), seized the gold bullion that many merchants and nobles had placed in the Tower of London for safe-keeping. The 2nd Bishop's War (founded on a difference of religious opinion) soon petered out and, with Parliament and its powers of taxati ...
LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE C H A P T E R 2 A Brief History of Visitation to the Earth To understand the present and to be prepared for the future, there are certain things from the past that must be clarified and that you must learn to see. The first is that the world has been visited for a very long time. These visitations have been from a number of different races for different purposes. Some have come here to gain biological samples from the immensely rich diversity of life in the world. Others have come here to hide things, to store things beyond the awareness of the native peoples of the world. At different points, others have established bases here temporarily and on a few occa- sions have tried, in more recent history, to educate or to influence early human civilizations. These visitations were brief and were not sustained for long. The bases that were established here were only mainly to gain a great- er understanding of the Earth’s geological and biological realities. Attempts to influence early civi ...

The Bill of Rights: A Brief History (3/4/2002)   "[A] bill of rights is what the people are entitled to against every government on earth, general or particular, and what no just government should refuse." --- Thomas Jefferson December 20, 1787   In the summer of 1787, delegates from the 13 states convened in Philadelphia and drafted a remarkable blueprint for self-government -- the Constitution of the United States. The first draft set up a system of checks and balances that included a strong executive branch, a representative legislature and a federal judiciary.   The Constitution was remarkable, but deeply flawed. For one thing, it did not include a specific declaration - or bill - of individual rights. It specified what the government could do but did not say what it could not do. For another, it did not apply to everyone. The "consent of the governed" meant propertied white men only.   The absence of a "bill of rights" turned out to be an obstacle to the Constitution's ratification by the states. ...
A Brief History of Psychotropic Drugs Prescribed to Mass Murderers By Daren Savage Then-Senator Joe Biden noted during the Democratic primary debate on Apr. 26, 2007, “We have let the country down in the way in which we have not focused on mental illness,” Biden said. “We should know that when you send a kid to college, you're going to be safe on college.” “My wife is a doctor of education, a teacher at a community college,” Biden said. “If, in fact, she and other teachers determine that a child - by the way they're writing and what they're acting - that they're a danger, the school should be able to take them off the campus.” This debate took place 10 days after Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 and wounded 17 others at Virginia Tech. Biden also admitted at this debate to owning guns for *** shooting. Recently, I took part in the Active Shooter Exercise at the Pueblo Complex conducted by LANL. Brief History of the Kom Fondom The Kom people also belong to the Tikari ethnic group having originated from the Tikari Ancestry around the river Noun in the Adamawa province of Cameroon. These people came out in a family of three which included the Kom, Nso and Bamum. The three families which are today separated, had one dialect/vernacular, one feeling and a common ambition. While together, they decided to build a pyramid that could even reach the heavens-like the biblical story of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11:1-9. The first one was put up but was shattered. The second attempt again shattered and the third attempt was subjected to the same fate. It then occurred to them as it did happen to the apostles on the descent of the holy spirit on them, the three families began to miraculously speak in different tongues. Hence “nambo” in Kom, ”njimba” in Nso and “momekah” in Bamum all meaning “I am saying that”.The miraculous speaking in completely different tongues compelled them to quit the r ...

The Outpost of Darwin Civilization Father Crowley, the Desert Padre tells about this note written on the back of a menu of a coffeeshop that existed in the mid 1930's known as The Outpost. Padre also tells us that the cafe stands at the junction Darwin's only streets, which are actually the bend in the highway to Death Valley, since the streets lead to nowhere past that corner. The Outpost was one of two coffee shops that "form one-eighth of all the the places of human habitation in that hamlet of vanished glories." The OutPost Menu proudly proclaimed: to be at the "market and Main Streets, Darwin California.population Whites,48; Indians, 19, burros, 500" and the Brief History of Darwin read: "Darwin was founded in 1874, and in 1877 the population was 4,500, or the same as Los Angeles in the same year. A Brief History of the town of Fish Hoek, Cape Fish Hoek or Vissers Baay or Visch Hoek appears on the earliest maps of the Cape. The arrival of European settlers in 1652 forced the indigenous population to leave the area, and during the 18th century farmers appeared in the Noordhoek area. Fish Hoek beach was used on an informal basis for whaling and fishing, but it was not until 1918 that it was laid out as a township. The first grant of Crown land in Fish Hoek was granted to Andries Bruins in 1818. The land was sold several times before being bought by Hester Sophia de Kock in 1883. She was then a spinster of 51 years old. In 1901, late in life, she married a local farmer, one Jacob Isaac de Villiers, who came to live with her on the farm. Although she farmed wheat and vegetables' she started providing accommodation for people who wanted to stay in Fish Hoek, and so became the first local tourist entrepreneur. Having realized that Fish Hoek was becoming popular, she left instructions in her will that the ...
“For a start, how is the existence of the other universes to be tested? To be sure, all cosmologists accept that there are some regions of the universe that lie beyond the reach of our telescopes, but somewhere on the slippery slope between that and the idea that there are an infinite number of universes, credibility reaches a limit. As one slips down that slope, more and more must be accepted on faith, and less and less is open to scientific verification. Extreme multiverse explanations are therefore reminiscent of theological discussions. Indeed, invoking an infinity of unseen universes to explain the unusual features of the one we do see is just as ad hoc as invoking an unseen Creator. The multiverse theory may be dressed up in scientific language, but in essence it requires the same leap of faith.” — Paul Davies, A Brief History of the Multiverse (as always, I like this quote in the spirit of agnosticism).

Those are words that mean so much to Richard Branson, as they go right to the heart of his belief in making it on your own. Now, head of 150 or so enterprises that carry the Virgin name, with a personal wealth estimated at nearly $3 billion, he has followed that personal dream and made the most of it. He still holds the record as fastest to cross the Atlantic ocean by boat. He still hopes to be first to circle the globe in a balloon. It is a success that was never expected for a dyslexic, nearsighted boy. Richard didn't breeze through school. It wasn't just a challenge for him, it was a nightmare. His dyslexia embarrassed him as he had to memorize and recite word for word in pu ...

May is Haitian Heritage Month Haitian Heritage Month: A Brief History by Bito David In the United States, Haitian Heritage Month is the celebration of Haitian Heritage and culture. Started in 1998 in the New England area, especially in Boston, Massachusetts where several Haitian organizations and media celebrated the month with a series of programs on Haitian history, culture, and contributions to the world. The month-long commemoration included activities like parades, flag raisings and exhibits organized by the Haitian-Americans United, Inc. (H.A.U.). Haitian Heritage Month is an expansion of the Haitian Flag Day celebration on May 18. Also May is the month of many significant national celebrations in Haiti. May 1st is Labor and Agriculture Day, May 20 is the birth date of Toussaint Louverture, the precursor of the independence of Haiti, May 17 is Teacher and University day, mothers’ day is celebrated on the last Sunday of May, for Haitians Catholics, May is the month of Mary, mother of Jesus. “The dimension of time seems to be attracting great notice, to judge from the number of recent movies that focus on it, such as Back to the Future, Terminator, Peggy Sue Got Married, etc. Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time (1989) was a best-seller and became, even more surprisingly, a popular film. Remarkable, in addition to the number of books that deal with time, are the larger number which don't, really, but which feature the word in their titles nonetheless, such as Virginia Spate's The Color of Time: Claude Monet (1992). Such references have to do, albeit indirectly, with the sudden, panicky awareness of time, the frightening sense of our being tied to it. Time is increasingly a key manifestation of the estrangement and humiliation that characterize modern existence. It illuminates the entire, deformed landscape and will do so ever more harshly until this landscape and all the forces that shape it are changed beyond recognizing. This contribution to the subject has little to do with t ...

A Brief History of Northfield, by the Northfield Historical Society From 1785 through the 1820s, largely Yankees from Connecticut, Massachusetts, and the older Vermont towns settled Northfield. Next to arrive were the Irish, attracted in the 1840’s by jobs on the railroad. The Welsh arrived after the Irish to work in the slate quarries in the 1850’s and 1860’s. Stonework also brought the next wave. Starting about 1890, Italians, Spaniards, and Scots joined the workforce in the granite sheds. From the 1880’s onward, Canadians of French descent came seeking opportunity, many buying up hill farms abandoned in the decades after the Civil War. The years from 1785 to 1825 saw the development of Northfield’s four villages. The first settlement was on East Hill (now Mill Hill), close by Elijah Paine’s grist and sawmills. As the population grew, boundaries crept up the hill and northward along Route 12. Clusters of houses became villages, each with its own personality and name: South Village, Center Vi ...

A Brief History of Puerto Rico Puerto Rico is a mountainous tropical island directly in the path of trade winds. These tropical conditions account for its tropical rain forest and tropical wet and dry climates. There is little difference from season to season in the energy received by the sun, and being near the equator the length of the day remains fairly constant throughout the year. Puerto Rico is composed of one large island and several small islands. It is bordered on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, on the east by the Virgin Passage (which separates it from the Virgin Islands), on the South by the Caribbean Sea, and on the west by the Mona Passage (which separates it from the Dominican Republic). On November 19, 1493 Puerto Rico was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to claim lands for the rulers of Spain, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. In 1493 the island was called Borinquen by the indians who lived there. Columbus named it San Juan Bautista. Later Spanish traders began cal ...
Brief History: 1967 - 2000 Ayub Khan lost at the negotiation table at Tashkent the war that was won by the Pakistan army supported by the people of Pakistan in 1965. This humiliation enraged the people of Pakistan against the dictator. Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, a patriot as he has always been, was left with no choice but to quit the Ayub Government on June 16, 1966. Bhutto was determined to bring down the dictator who had betrayed the nation. To achieve this goal, he needed a political organization and a political platform. He waited for more than a year before he found both; like so many aggrieved politicians before him, he chose to found his own political party. The PPP was launched at its founding convention held in Lahore on November 30 - December 01, 1967. At the same meeting, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was elected as its Chairman. Among the express goals for which the party was formed were the establishment of an "egalitarian democracy" and the "application of socialistic ideas to realize economic and soci ...
Brief History of Quaid-e-Azam Library The library building was constructed in the mid of 19th century during the British rule. It comprises two halls, the Lawrence Hall (65’x32’.5) and the Montgomery Hall (106’x46’). The Lawrence Hall was built in 1861-62 to commemorate Sir John Lawrence’s association with the Punjab. He was the first Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, and subsequently Viceroy and Governor General of India. The Montgomery Hall was erected in 1866 from subscription of native Chiefs of the Punjab in honour of Sir Robert Montgomery. Both the halls are joined by a covered corridor. A commodious reading-room, leading into the corridor between the two halls, was lately constructed. The building was frequently used as an assembly room for public meetings and staging theatrical and musical performances. Mostly it was a meeting place for the foreign elite to while away their evenings in summer with iced drinks and in winter with a log-fire. Both Halls were under the charge of the Municip ...
A Brief History of the Memon Community: Introduction: Traditionally, the name Memon is an adaptation of Momin (Arabic :) meaning Faithful. This was used when this community converted to Islam. They are now predominantly Hanafi Sunni Muslims. They follow Sun-nah and Hadith of Muhammad (Peace be upon him), considered by them to be the last prophet of God "Allah" (Offers five time prayers and recites Qur'an, and adherent of Islam. History: The origin of the Memons as a community dates back to a period in history listed as 824 AH when some 700 Hindu families, representing some 6178 people belonging to the old and famous Lohana community of Sindh, accepted Islam. In adopting the Islamic faith, the new adherents accepted a new form of dress and style of living that differed substantially from their fore bearers. But certain customs and elements of unity remained an inherited tradition throughout their lives and it is on account of this that they were and are easily distinguishable from other Muslim communities. ...
Topical articles Brief History of the Calendar issue 04/01/2013 Calendar problem immeasurably more serious than the question of which table we sit once a year on New Year's night: a perilous or lean. Brief History of the Kumaon Regiment Origin and Raisings - Pre-Independence In the lap of the snow-capped Himalayas, between the kingdom of Nepal and the Indian region of Garhwal, lie the KUMAON Hills, the home of the Kumaonis and the KUMAON Regiment. But the KUMAON Regiment did not always have its home among the lush hills of KUMAON, nor was it known by that name till recent years. Some of its battalions have a history that goes back to the closing decades of the eighteenth century. Retracing that history, we find that the Regiment was born far away in the Deccan, where some of its units were raised as part of the army of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Two Battalions of the KUMAON Regiment trace their origin to First and Second Battalions of Ellichpur. Brigade, raised by Nawab Salabat Khan, Subedar of Berar, as part of the forces of Nizam of Hyderabad. In March 1813, Sir Henry Russell, then British Resident in the court of Nizam of Hyderabad , raised the Russell Brigade comprising two Battalions. One of the Bat ...
*A Brief History of Islam in the United States* The presence of Islam in the New World began with the Moriscoes who accompanied the Spanish invadors. Following their time, great numbers of Muslim slaves were imported to this continent to work on the plantations of the South. In spite of the effort to wipe out the slaves' Islamic identity, Islamic practices and beliefs remained strong with many of them. Several books chronicle the early history of Islam in America, including: African Muslims in Antebellum America: A Sourcebook by Allan D. Austin. Islam in North America: A sourcebook by Michael A. Koszegi and J. Gordon Melton. Disforming the American Canon: African-Arabic Slave Narratives and the Vernacular, by Ronald A.T. Judy In the early part of this century, waves of immigrants from various parts of the Muslim world, most notably Palestine, Lebanon and what is now Pakistan, appeared on these shores. These people were mostly illiterate, unskilled Arabs who found work in the auto factories of Detroit, or ...
A Brief History of Emergency Medical Services EMS in America can be traced back to the Civil War era. All military personnel had to be examined by medical officers to qualify for duty. Also, ambulances were assigned based on the size of the regiment. Each ambulance team was trained in patient care to better take care of the soldiers. In 1865 Cincinnati incorporated the first civilian ambulance. Then, in 1869, New York City advertised a 30 second response time and provided an Ambulance Surgeon and a quart of brandy for their patients! During World War I, signal boxes were used by injured soldiers to assist medical teams in locating them in the field of battle. Medical teams also used electric, steam, and gasoline powered carriages for transporting the injured. It was also the first war to utilize traction splints and other medical equipment. After the war, civilian ambulances carrying surgeons were equipped with radio dispatchers to better serve the community. The transition to what we know as the modern . ...
For what purpose did God create the vast universe? “Our solar system is certainly a prerequisite for our existence,” wrote Stephen Hawking in A Brief History of Time. “But there does not seem to be any need for all these other galaxies.” That encapsulates a lot of human reasoning about God’s creation: If it doesn’t make sense to us, there must be no sense to it. A leading physicist and theoretical cosmologist at Princeton University named James Peebles has “compared scientists attempting to comprehend the universe with slightly befuddled kindergarten children, while nature is a patient teacher ‘who keeps presenting us with hints, we’re still not getting the point, but at least we’re working toward it’” (Modern Maturity, October/November 1988). It is a fitting analogy. Let’s exercise a little humility. Clearly God took great pains to create the universe just so. He did so with deliberate intent and sound reasoning. The material universe itself does not explain itself. We must cons ...
A Brief History of the Tamils of Mauritius   The French governor Labourdonnais introduced from India, sugar cane, which is now the main crop.He also brought from Pondichery a number of artisans, especially joiners and masons, to teach the crafts to the Mauritians, who were then mainly slaves from Africa. Fine pieces of furniture made by those Indian craftsmen still exist. some of which are on exhibition at the Naval Museum at Mahebourg.    In 1810 the English took the Island after a fierce naval battle. In this battle a good many Tamil soldiers fought with the English. Ever since then the Island has been a British Colony.   It appears that during the French occupation, there was a considerable number of Tamils here and that they played an important part in the economic life of the country. This is evident from the fact that one or two French newspapers of the time published in Tamil, accounts of important events and advertisements, especially auction sales. We infer from the above that among those Tam ...
A Brief History of Geneva Dominated by the Romans, the Burgundians and then the Franks, the city of Geneva was already an independent diocese by the end of the 13th century. In 1536 it adopted the Protestant Reformation with the arrival of John Calvin. During the night of 11 to 12 December 1602 the Genevans repelled the troops of the Duke of Savoy who were trying to seize the city by scaling its fortifications. In 1798 Geneva was occupied by the French and became the administrative centre of the Departement du Léman. The Republic was restored on 31 December 1813 and two years later Geneva became part of Switzerland. The International Committee of the Red Cross was founded in the city in 1863 and the following year the basis of international humanitarian law was laid with the signing of the First Geneva Convention. In 1919 the city was chosen as the headquarters of the League of Nations, the forerunner of the UN which today has its European headquarters in Geneva.

The Rupertus (DD-851) was laid down on May 2, 1945 by Bethlehem Steel Co. in Quincy Mass. It was launched on September 21, 1945, sponsored by Mrs. William H. Rupertus. It was commissioned on March 8, 1945 under the command of CDR William C. F. Robards. From this time forward, the Rupertus alternated deployments to the western Pacific and operations off the west coast of the United ...
Stand in solidarity this Thursday January 10th, with the 30 brave family farmers who will enter a courtroom in Washington DC in the appeal of their landmark court case challenging Monsanto’s abusive patent infringement lawsuits against America’s family farmers As a result of aggressive lawsuits against farmers with contaminated crops, Monsanto has created an atmosphere of fear in rural America and driven dozens of farmers into bankruptcy. But farmers are fighting back! People will assemble in solidarity with farmers on the front lines of the struggle against corporate domination of our food system. We will meet at 10AM at Lafayette Square. Family farmers, their lawyers, and supporters will join after the hearing to explain why they traveled thousands of miles to protect their farms and communities. WHAT IS THE BLACK ROBED REGIMENT? A Brief History by David Barton The Black Robed Regiment was the name that the British placed on the courageous and patriotic American clergy during the Founding Era (a backhanded reference to the black robes they wore). [1] Significantly, the British blamed the Black Regiment for American Independence, [2] and rightfully so, for modern historians have documented that: There is not a right asserted in the Declaration of Independence which had not been discussed by the New England clergy before 1763. [3] It is strange to today's generation to think that the rights listed in the Declaration of Independence were nothing more than a listing of sermon topics that had been preached from the pulpit in the two decades leading up to the American Revolution, but such was the case. But it was not just the British who saw the American pulpit as largely responsible for American independence and government, our own leaders agreed. For example, John Adams rejoiced that "the pulpits have ...
To my friends who can't understand why I want to live here: Rockport - A Seacoast Village on Cape Ann You hear the phrase "quaint seacoast village" so often that it becomes a cliché, but this description fits Rockport well. An enjoyable place to spend a day, weekend or vacation, Rockport welcomes tourists from around the world and day trippers from greater Boston for a variety of reasons. A Brief History of Rockport Rockport's Motif was in the late 1600s that fishermen from Ipswich (a small town located just north of Cape Ann) came to Rockport. During the 1700s Rockport was a small fishing village, but Rockport's history took an unusual turn after the turn of the next century. In the 1820s, the need for granite around the country and the world was high, and Rockport had high quality granite. Rockport is also located directly on the ocean, which made the transportation of the granite easier than an inland location. During this time, granite was in high demand and Rockport was furnishing most of the countr ...
Posted the blog 'A Brief History of Life Insurance' on our website,
"I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road." – Stephen Hawking, British theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author of “A Brief History of Time,” who was born 8 January 1942. Some quotes from Stephen Hawking: “We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.” “We are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity. We cannot remain looking inwards at ourselves on a small and increasingly polluted and overcrowded planet.” “Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.” “I think computer viruses should count as life. I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive. We've created life in our own image.” “My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it ...
With over 1.57 Billion Muslims worldwide (4.6 million in North America alone1), Islam is no doubt one of the major religions in the earth today. The question is how could a religion whose major prophet was born almost 600 years after the Greatest Prophet to ever hit the face of the earth (Yashiya), have one of the biggest cult followings in the earth? What were the people following before Islam's revered prophet came along to spread the message of monotheism? How could this message be spread to the children of Israel who were already following the one God thousands of years before Mohammed was born? What were the Arabs following before the 6th century B.C.? Is Islam the original religion of the so-called African Americans that were brought to the shores of America from West Africa? All of these questions will be answered in this study on the history of Islam. Brief History of the Life of Mohammed: Mohammed was born in 570 A.D. (almost 600 years after Christ) to Abd Allah ibn Abd al Muttalib (father) and A ...
Thanks to Samantha Lyttle for sharing this on my profile page . sorry, do not have Part 1. WATER MUST READ!! Part 2 Im sure probably most of yesterdays posts was not new to you. There is so much content to cover but I will try my best to be brief. Everything I state here is documented and can be investigated further if you so wish. WATER FLUORIDATION Purpose: In the Water Fluoridation Act 2008 it states: "The object of this Act is to promote good oral health in Queensland by the safe fluoridation of public potable water supplies." Wiki states it as: "Water fluoridation is the controlled addition of fluoride to a public water supply to reduce tooth decay". Brief History: The acceptance of the "benefits" of water fluoridation occurred in Australia in December 1953. Australia's drinking water supplies subsequently began fluoridation in the 1960s an ...

You know, I consider myself a somewhat intelligent person. I love watch TED Talks and TEDx videos. I read a great deal and have even enjoyed Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" and understood the vast majority of it. However, I believe I may have met my match. I just don't think I'll EVER reach the Intellectual level required to watch "Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo". Good thing they subtitle everything or else I would such brilliant sayings like "I'm fixin' to nut up on all y'all". I'll just never measure up! :)
A Brief History of MySpace Myspace was originally started by eUniverse in 1998. At the launch, the project leads were Chris DeWolfe, Tom Anderson, and Josh Berman. When it launched, Social Networking had not yet come into it's own on the internet; making marketing it quite difficult. Initially, the eUniverse team members themselves evangelized their product, have contests to see which of them could sign up the most users. As it progressed, it seemed less and less likely that MySpace would be able to turn a profit. Indeed, prior to 2003, it didn't even make a blip on the traffic radar of the internet. November of 2003 was where it's very existence became evident. Slightly prior to that, it was actually losing ground as far as traffic went. Traffic then grew at a steady rate until around November of 2005, where traffic started a steep climb to the top. As is the nature of social applications and websites, it was experiencing the viral growth that generally leads to success. Sure enough, traffic continued cl ...

HISTORY OF THE NRA. A Brief History of the NRA Dismayed by the lack of marksmanship shown by their troops, Union veterans Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate formed the National Rifle Association in 1871. The primary goal of the association would be to "promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis," according to a magazine editorial written by Church. After being granted a charter by the state of New York on November 17, 1871, the NRA was founded. Civil War Gen. Ambrose Burnside, who was also the former governor of Rhode Island and a U.S. Senator, became the fledgling NRA's first president. An important facet of the NRA's creation was the development of a practice ground. In 1872, with financial help from New York state, a site on Long Island, the Creed Farm, was purchased for the purpose of building a rifle range. Named Creedmoor, the range opened a year later, and it was there that the first annual matches were held. Political opposition to the promotion of marksmanship in New Y ...

Been a long night apparently… It was about 1.00am when we had enough information together to head up to the spare room. Turns out that what I really needed to do was ask The Monkey what he had done in his rituals that had caused the black hole in the first place. Seems the first unsuccessful one had included the invoking of Tlaloc the Aztec rain god – probably why it kept raining. The second more successful one had involved the invoking of Tezcatlipoca – The Smoking Mirror - one of the Aztec gods associated with the sun. Although this bad boy was also god of the night and I think had some issues… The Monkey had mixed this with some ritual magic, peyote, blood sacrifice and chanting passages from Stephen Hawking’s ‘A Brief History of Time’. So we came to the conclusion that if we sort of repeated the ritual but in reverse we might be able to close the black hole. Well, we had no peyote left so we elected for a combination of dope and Red Bull – yes we were just winging it. I got a chicken o ...

A Brief History of Islam Islam, began in Mecca, claimed to be the revelation of God (Allah) through the angel Gabriel to a man named Muhammad. Muhammad was born in approximately AD 570-571. He was born to the powerful tribe of the Quraish in Mekkah (Mecca). His father's name was Abdullah. His mother's name was Aminah. Apparently Abdullah was a merchant who made caravan trips. He died on a trading trip soon after his marriage to Aminah, leaving Muhammad fatherless at birth. Aminah, his mother, died when he was only six years old. Muhammad was taken in by his grandfather, only to have him die when Muhammad was eight years old. At this time, his uncle, Abu Talib, one of the leaders of the Quraish tribe took him in and raised him. Muhammad was taught the family business and apparently quite successful. A wealthy widow named Khadijah arranged for Muhammad to oversee her trading business, and was so impressed with his skill and appearance that she proposed marriage to him. A Brief History of Taekwondo, Part 4 In the early 1960s, political upheavals in South Korea had help led to an exodus of highly qualified taekwondo instructors, and having already established a foothold in Canada, Choi and the ITF were well-positioned to take advantage of the growing interest in the United States. In August 1967, Choi met with U.S. taekwondo representatives at the All-American Taekwondo Tournament in Chicago. On November 26, 1967 the United States Taekwondo Association was established. The Amateur Athletic Union of the United States recognized taekwondo in October 1979, thus helping promote the style in the West. Meanwhile, the *** continued to grow internationally during the 1970s. Recognition by the General Assembly of the International Sports Federation came in 1975, and the International Military Sports Council added taekwondo to its list of events in 1976. Recognition from the International Olympic Committee followed in 1980. Beginning with the 2000 Olympiad in Australia, taekwondo w ...
A Brief History of Taekwondo, Part 3 Unfortunately, the kwan unification lasted only a short time, for political upheaval again took its toll on taekwondo. South Korean president Chang Myun was overthrown in 1961 by Gen. Park Chung-hee, who became president in 1963. According to KATU records, Choi left at the request of the new South Korean government and found refuge in Canada in 1964, where he founded the International Taekwondo Federation two years later. Taekwondo became well-established in Korea, and in 1971 Kim Un-yong was elected to lead the KTA. Both Daeshik Kim and Richard Chun credit Kim Un-yong with further accelerating the growth of the art. In addition to forming the World Taekwondo Federation in 1973, Kim Un-yong played an instrumental role in building Kukkiwon, the Seoul-based headquarters for the art. The same year, the first World Taekwondo Championships took place in Seoul from May 25 to 27. During this time, ITF influence on the development of taekwondo in Korea was negligible. —Richa ...
The process of editing the book of Doctrine and Covenants - A Brief History “. . . W. W. Phelps, one of the early members of the Church, was by trade a printer. He had gone down into Missouri. The printing press and type were brought down the Ohio River from Cincinnati where it was purchased, and across the country to Independence, and the revelations which had been selected by the Prophet were set in type, that is, most of them. But this was slow work. We must remember that they were living in pioneer times, that Kirtland was about as far from Missouri as we are here in Salt Lake City from Winter Quarters, from which point the pioneers started on their journey to the Rocky Mountains. We do not stop to think of that, and so it took some time. By the summer of 1833 most of these revelations had been printed, but not all. “At that time trouble arose, and a mob destroyed the press, scattered the type, and destroyed most of the copies that had been printed; however, a few were saved. This was known as the ...
A Brief History of Taekwondo, Part 2 In the spring of 1955, the name "taekwondo" was adopted by the council of masters to describe the style they had created. Records of the meeting provided by the KoreAmerican Taekwondo Union hint that Gen. Choi Hong-hi suggested the name. As chief of the military reserves in 1958, Choi required his soldiers to train in the newly named martial art. The men of the South Korea-based U.S. 7th Infantry Division were also among those first taekwondo students, and training in the art became obligatory for the Korean police and air force. In 1960 Choi traveled to the United States to visit Jhoon Rhee’s Karate Club. This prompted Rhee to begin using the name taekwondo for the first time in the West. Additional recognition for taekwondo came in 1961 with the formation of the Korea Taekwondo Association. Membership in the prestigious Korean Amateur Sports Association followed that same year. For a brief time, all the kwan were united under the presidency of Choi, and taekwondo w ...

A Brief History of Hypnosis Evidence of hypnotic-like phenomena appears in many ancient cultures. The writer of Genesis seems familiar with the anesthetic power of hypnosis when he reports that God put Adam "into a deep sleep" to take his rib to form Eve. Other ancient records suggest hypnosis was used by the oracle at Delphi and in rites in ancient Egypt (Hughes and Rothovius, 1996). The modern history of hypnosis begins in the late 1700s, when a French physician, Anton Mesmer, revived an interest in hypnosis. 1734-1815 Franz Anton Mesmer was born in Vienna. Mesmer is considered the father of hypnosis. He is remembered for the term mesmerism which described a process of inducing trance through a series of passes he made with his hands and/or magnets over people. He worked with a person's animal magnetism (psychic and electromagnetic energies). The medical community eventually discredited him despite his considerable success treating a variety of ailments. His successes offended the medical establishment ...
A Brief History of the Knights Templars: According to chroniclers of their early years, the Knights Templar were founded in 1188 by Hughes de Payen, a vassal of the Count of Champagne. This occurred after they had presented themselves to Baldwin I, King of Jerusalem, whose older brother, Godfroi de Bouillon had led the crusaders to victory in the Holy Land almost twenty years previous. They proposed themselves as a order of fighting monks, who would protect the roadways for pious pilgrims journeying to Jerusalem. They were immediately given an entire wing of the royal palace as their headquarters - a wing that had been built upon the foundations of the Temple of Solomon. Thus they received their name: "the Knights of the Temple." For the next nine years they admitted no new members to their order - strange since the nine founding members hardly seem like they would have provided an adequate number of staff to protect all of the roads to the Holy Land. Furthermore, there is no evidence from contemporary ch ...

Brief History of the Wings of Healing: This radio ministry was begun by Dr. Thomas Wyatt in 1942, during the depths of World War II. Although beginning modestly, with the anointed message and spiritual insight it soon began to increase, so that soon it was heard on two national radio networks, and around the world. In the early years the ministry expanded into many areas of evangelism, initiating the first mass evangelistic crusades, in Jamaica, followed by West Africa, and soon in many other nations. Bethesda Bible Institute was begun and trained hundreds of Missionary/ Evangelists. From this many indigenous churches were established, and a great religious movement swept the nations of Ghana (then the Gold Coast), and Nigeria, that is still bearing fruit. The ministry has continued its landmark involvement with these indigenous works, and with various benevolent outreaches around the world. On Dr. Wyatt's demise in 1964, the leadership of this ministry passed to his wife Evelyn Wyatt, who continued its v ...
"A Brief History of the Illuminati" The Illuminati trace their origins back thousands of years to their conception as a result of the genetic inbreeding between a reptilian extraterrestrial race and humanity. Their modern origin, however, traces back to the 1760s and a man named Adam Weishaupt, who defected from the Catholic church and organized the Illuminati, financed by the International Bankers. Since then, according to the Illuminati, their top goal has been to achieve a “one world government” and to subjugate all religions and governments in the process. The Illuminati thus attribute all wars since the French Revolution as having been fomented by them in their pursuit of their goals. Weishaupt wrote out a master plan in the 1770s outlining the Illuminati’s goals, finishing on May 1, 1776. According to the Illuminati, this great day is still commemorated by Communist nations in the form of May Day. At the time Weishaupt’s ideology was first introduced, Britain and France were the two gr ...

Sayings of Muhammad (S.A.W.) The following sayings are taken from A Brief History of the Fourteen Infallibles, Ansariyan Publications: Iran. Charity A man giving in alms one piece of silver in his lifetime is better for him than giving one hundred when about to die. To meet friends cheerfully and invite them to a feast are charitable acts. To extend consideration towards neighbors and send them presents are charitable acts. Education To acquire knowledge is binding upon all Muslims, whether male or female. The ink of the scholar is more holy than the blood of the martyr. He who travels in the search of knowledge, to him God shows the way of Paradise. Acquire knowledge, because he who acquires it, in the way of the Lord, performs an act of piety; who speaks of it praises the Lord; who seeks it, adores God, who dispenses instruction in it, bestows alms; and who imparts it to its fitting objects, performs an act of devotion to God. Knowledge enables its possessor to distinguish what is forbidden from what is ...

Did you know that Duracell went to the moon in 1969? Watch this brief history:
There may be a hundred billion planetary systems in the galaxy awaiting exploration. Not one of those worlds will be identical to Earth. A few will be hospitable; most will appear hostile. Many will be achingly beautiful. In some worlds there will be many suns in the daytime sky, many moons in the heavens at night, or great particle ring systems soaring from horizon to horizon. Some moons will be so close that their planet will loom high in the heavens, covering half the sky. And some worlds will look out into a vast gaseous nebula, all those skies, rich in distant and exotic constellations, there will be a faint yellow star — perhaps barely seen by the naked eye, perhaps visible only through the telescope — the home star of the fleet of interstellar transports exploring this tiny region of the Milky Way Galaxy. The themes of space and time are, we have seen, intertwined. Worlds and stars, like people, are born, live and die. The lifetime of a human being measured in decades; the lifetime of the Sun i ...

Spitfire exhibition given fundraising boost A major campaign to rejuvenate an exhibition of a Second World War Spitfire in the city where the fighter plane’s designer was born is tomorrow (Friday) being given a major boost. Stoke City chairman Peter Coates is donating £20,000 to the initiative, which is to create a unique Spitfire cockpit simulator alongside the Mark XVI machine on display at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent. A model and design brief have already been put together to showcase the attraction, and it is proposed that city-based Spitfire specialist Supermarine Aero Engineering will build the cockpit, featuring authentic controls and instruments from the plane. The Stoke-on-Trent City Council-run museum houses a Spitfire which was presented to the city in 1969 by the RAF, in recognition of the fact that the city is the birthplace of its designer Reginald Mitchell. The machine had previously been displayed at the entrance gate of RAF Bicester, and came to the museum wi ...

36 states drag Federal Government of Nigeria to court All 36 states of Nigeria have unanimously dragged the Federal Government of Nigeria to court on the bases of fuel subsidy deduction on state revenue. A paradox Nigeria is the sixth oil producing nation in the world and yet pay oil merchants who import Oil into the country in the name of control price. Further more the fuel subsidy regime is regarded as one of the most dubious regime in the history he Nigeria. This case was filed by team of six lawyers. In the brief filed by a team of lawyers including Joseph Bodunrin Daudu [SAN] and Prince Lateef Fagbemi [SAN], the states are contending that the Federal Government lacks the statutory powers to make deductions from the nation’s revenue unilaterally. The states argued in court that the said deductions amounted to a usurpation of the powers of Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency [PPPRA] by giving the agency “illegal directive which made PPRA to honour unverified vouchers from importers o ...

In other words, 12.12.12., is actually 03.04.05., in regards to the Ethiopian calendar. Any Ethiopians in the house can contest that; I am prepared to stand corrected. Today in History Civil War Dec 12, 1806: Cherokee leader and Confederate General Stand Watie is born On this day in 1806, Confederate General Stand Watie is born near Rome, Georgia. Watie, a Cherokee Indian, survived the tribe's Trail of Tears in the 1830s and became the only Native American to achieve the rank of general during the Civil War. Watie came from an influential family and played a major role during the Cherokee difficulties in Georgia. The tribe was under increasingly intense pressure by their Anglo neighbors to move to a reservation in the West. Watie was part of a faction that began to believe that voluntary removal might be the only way to preserve their autonomy. He was a signer of the Treaty of New Echota in 1835, which ceded the Cherokee's Georgia lands for a reservation in Indian Territory. After the disastrous Trail of Tears trek to the West, during which one in four Cherokee died, all who signed the treaty were assassinated except for Watie. Even though the Cherokee suffered at the h ...

What Is NanYin (南音)? The NanYin music is one of the oldest forms of documented music in China. There are much older forms from China but no documentation has survived. NanYin means literally “Southern Music” and it begins it’s origins in the Tang and Song Dynasties (Tang: 618-907, Song 420 -479) , and was born in the Southern Provence of Fujian. For a historical reference point -Gregorian Chant and other mono harmonic monastic works lives in the time period of 590-604, however NanYin music is instrumental based and much more complex rhythmically, and in its structure. NanYin music consists of three main parts: Zhi (divertimento), Pu (instrumental), and Qu (vocal). The earliest Nanyin Musics are exclusively melodic and mostly sung/played in unison although with microtonal variations in pitch and intonation. The melodies have very complex forms and can be quite long and can change meter and tempo quite drastically throughout a given piece. The pieces are entirely scripted, (quite intensely so), ev ...

Continuing the brief history of great nation of Israel, this is Part-6 , 63 BCE-313 CE Roman The Roman army led by Titus conquered Jerusalem and destroyed the Second Temple at 70 CE. Jewish people were then exiled and dispersed to the Diaspora. In 132, Bar Kokhba organized a revolt against Roman rule, but was killed in a battle in Bethar in Judean Hills. Subsequently the Romans decimated the Jewish community, renamed Jerusalem as Aelia Capitolina and Judea as Palaestina to obliterate Jewish identification with the Land of Israel (the word Palestine, and the Arabic word Filastin originate from this Latin name). The remaining Jewish community moved to northern towns in the Galilee. Around 200 CE the Sanhedrin was moved to Tsippori (Zippori, Sepphoris). The Head of Sanhedrin, Rabbi Yehuda HaNassi (Judah the Prince), compiled the Jewish oral law, Mishna. To be continued...,

Coffees from India and the Pacific: Timor Timor is another do-good, feel-good coffee that is gradually becoming taste-good as well. As any newspaper-reading adult knows, over the decades of the 1980s and 1990s East Timor -- a former Portuguese colony -- underwent a bloody war of resistance to Indonesian occupation, and eventually, at the end of the decade of the 1990s, a brief but even bloodier spasm that led to independence from its much larger neighbor. During the 1990s international assistance organizations helped the East Timorese revive their once famous coffee industry. Like most small-holder coffees from the Malay Archipelago, East Timor coffees are grown without chemicals, but Timors have the advantage of being internationally certified as organic. They are wet-processed at recently established wet mills or washing stations. Buying a Timor coffee at this moment in history means making a small but valuable gesture of support for one of the many peoples of the world caught up in sectarian and politi ...

I have to say that until I started this page I had no idea that military sexual trauma/rape was a problem. Male vs female I get but male vs male? *** I was In during the 80's and if it was a problem, I never heard about it. I saw situations where a male got too "friendly" with a female. We'd tell him to knock it off and "help him make the right decision" if he was stubborn. But I never heard of anything progressing to rape. And male vs male?!?! Many time I drank till I passed out. Never did I give a thought that i might get butt punked. Yeah sometimes we messed with each other, put lipstick on them, duct taped them, etc but never gave a thought to MST. What the *** people? Rant over. (Ben)
