JIMI HENDRIX MEMORABILIA GOES ON DISPLAY IN VANCOUVER The connection between Jimi Hendrix and Vancouver extends more than 100 years. Beginning with the arrival of his paternal grandparents to the city in 1912; the birth of his father James “Al” Hendrix in 1919; to the many times that Jimi Hendrix himself visited the city from the 1940s-1960s to visit family and friends. As a young musician Jimi returned to Vancouver in the early 1960s as a member of Thomas & The Tomcats and even performed briefly with local act Bobby Taylor & The Vancouver before striking out on his own. Perhaps his most memorable stop in Vancouver was his headlining engagement with The Jimi Hendrix Experience in September 1968 when the trio performed at the Pacific Coliseum. Without a doubt, Jimi has always been closely associated with the region. This weekend, Jimi Hendrix made a return visit to Vancouver by way of the grand opening of the new Hard Rock Casino Vancouver and their collection of vintage Jimi Hendrix memorabilia and .. ...
also born January 4 ... 1942 - John McLaughlin, who formed the Mahavishnu Orchestra and has also worked with Carlos Santana, Stanley Clark and Jaco Pastorius. Prior to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, in the 1960s, he played with Alexis Korner, Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, the Graham Bond Organisation and Brian Auger. In 1969 he moved to New York to join Tony Williams' Lifetime. On March 25th of that year he jammed with Jimi Hendrix at the Record Plant, recalling ‘we played from 2 until 8 in the morning. I was playing an acoustic guitar with a pick-up, a flat-top guitar, and Jimi was playing an electric. I thought it was a wonderful experience!’ In 2010, Jeff Beck called McLaughlin ‘the best guitarist alive’.
