News: Boston Dynamics' Atlas Robot Is Trying to Be the Karate Kid, Crane Kick and All - Slate Magazine (blog)
It’s been a little less than a year since Google embarked on a major spending spree of robotics firms and since then we haven’t heard too much about the company’s growing android army. Per 9to5Google, there’s a new video showing off a robot built by the Google-owned Boston Dynamics in which it reenacts the classic scene in The Karate Kid where Daniel stands atop a small barrel on a beach and tries to maintain balance while performing assorted moves. RELATED: The 5 craziest robots in Google’s growing Android army 9to5Google notes that the robot, which is nicknamed Ian, stands at 6 feet 2 inches and weighs around 330 pounds, which seems surprisingly light considering that it’s made entirely of metal. For comparison, consider
Just about a year ago we learned Andy Rubin had shifted his focus at Google from Android ("the definition of open") to working with robots, like the ones from its acquisition Boston Dynamics, but tonight reports indicate he is leaving the company entirely. The Information and the Wall Street Journal reported the departure initially, which Google has confirmed. In a statement, CEO Larry Page said "I want to wish Andy all the best with what's next. With Android he created something truly remarkable-with a billion plus happy users. Thank you." The Information reports his departure is the result of some issue with the structure of his team, and that Google research scientist James Kuffner will take over his role directing robotics projects. Wild Conspiracy Theories Spreading Online 1. MH370 is in Diego Garcia. It's hard to make something as big as a plane disappear, but on March 8, 2014, Beijing-bound Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 completely dropped off the radar. Despite investigations from dozens of countries, the Boeing 777 did not turn up, seemingly vanishing without a trace. The only thing left to do was speculate — a lot. 2.Google is Skynet. Google controls hundreds of Internet tools and properties we use every day. However, quite a few folks believe Google is actually Skynet, the fictional artificial intelligence hellbent on destroying humanity in the Terminator series.Google propelled the comparison after buying Boston Dynamics, an engineering company that has created robots for the Pentagon. 3.Everyone is in the Illuminati. This is the Internet's favorite theory. Beyoncé. Jay Z. Miley Cyrus. Kanye West. Taylor Swift. Your mom, probably. What Does Google and Military Have in Common? - Google’s acquisition of Boston Dynamics. As we Aussies say...
Google's Evolution From Android To Humanoids 26 Jan 2014 05:15 Blame it on Issac Asimov or on Hollywood films like The Terminator but the first image that comes to mind when one thinks of super-efficient robots is an apocalyptic future. This paranoia was further fed last week when the computationally omniscient Google announced the acquisition of its eighth robotics company over the past few months, the high-profile Boston Dynamics. Boston Dynamics, a spinoff from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1992, has been closely working for the U.S. military with funding from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The firm claims they make the most advanced robots on earth, and a glance through their online portfolio reveals that this isn't far from the truth. But then why is this global search giant and owner of the world's leading smartphone platform doing business with robot makers? Google has always been clear in its intention of wanting to expand far and wide, and that it is by no means the ...
www.technologyvista.com: Google Invests in Robotics Google has recently confirmed reports that it has bought Boston Dynamics. Boston Dynamics is a robot engineering company that has worked closely with the Pentagon. It has been working on developing war ready robots and it has also developed a humanoid robot. One of the most interesting things about this move is that Boston Dynamics is the eighth robotics form that google has acquired during the last six months. There is much speculation as to what their future plans may be in the robotics industry. Google has indicated that it does not intend to become a military contractor, though it will honor existing contracts. Boston Dynamics has been responsible for creating some very cool stuff, such as a sophisticated humanoid robot. This robot is called ATLAS : DARPA, it is a walking robot that is lifelike and very fascinating. The creation of this robot is seen as being a giant step forward in the development of modern robotics. Boston Dynamics also created a r ...
The horrifying truth about Google's secret project For the past couple of weeks, we've all been wondering why Google bought Boston Dynamics, the company that makes those creepy Big Dog and PETMAN robots for the military. This comes after the company announced a project to eliminate death, and after building a secret installation out of cargo crates on a barge in San Francisco Bay. It's as if Google is in the early stages of building a city state. Was it a secret data center, soon to be outside national jurisdiction? A rejuvenation lab for Ray Kurzweil? No. The truth is much worse. It turns out that Google is using the barge as a marketing device. In an open letter to journalists, a Google rep said, "Although it's still early days and things may change, we're exploring using the barge as an interactive space where people can learn about new technology." Daniel Terdiman, the journalist who broke the barge story in the first place, wrote yesterday that it will also be "a temporary exhibit space." Translation ...
Google acquires developer of military robots - Big Dog, a four-legged robot that can climb muddy hills, and Cheetah, a robot which can outrun the fastest human, are among the robots that now belong to Google Inc. The world's largest Internet search company acquired Boston Dynamics, a privately held company best known for building robots that look as if they belong in a science-fiction movie and which are often co-developed or funded by the U.S. military. The acquisition is the latest by Google's secretive robotics division, led by Andy Rubin, the former boss of the company's Android mobile operating system. Google's new robotics division has acquired more than a half-dozen other robotics companies. Google declined to comment and Boston Dynamics did not return requests for comment. A person familiar with the matter confirmed the deal, which was first reported by the New York Times on Saturday, and said that Google will honor Boston Dynamics' military contracts.
By Mike Loukides, O’Reilly Media We’ve watched the rising interest in robotics for the past few years. It may have started with the birth of FIRST Robotics competitions, continued with the iRobot and the Roomba, and more recently with Google’s driverless cars. But in the last few weeks, there has been a big change. Suddenly, everybody’s talking about robots and robotics. It might have been Jeff Bezos’ remark about using autonomous drones to deliver products by air. It’s a cool idea, though I think it’s farfetched, but that’s another story. Amazon Prime isn’t Amazon’s first venture into robotics: a year and a half ago, they bought Kiva Systems, which builds robots that Amazon uses in their massive warehouses. (Personally, I think package delivery by drone is unlikely for many, many reasons, but that’s another story, and certainly no reason for Amazon not to play with delivery in their labs.) But what really lit the fire was Google’s acquisition of Boston Dynamics, a DARPA contractor ...
I almost cried when I first saw it... A company called Boston Dynamics (You may have heard of them) are building super Robots and they are called the following: CHEETAH, PET MAN, and others. Also stay stead fast in the Lord Jesus Christ, time is short brothers and sisters. Also I checked on the Hal Lindsey Website and it says Israel is in danger, oh my Lord Jesus protect. In 2014 and 2015 the Blood Moons takes place all on Jewish Holidays (That is very significant). The IRS will deduct money from your Tax Returns if you don't buy it... hmmm, why is it being forced? In the next two years look for a super explosion of Knowledge and Technology. Receive Jesus into your heart before it's too late.

-yeah Google is so evil lol Google has just completed the purchase of Boston Dynamics, a private spin-off company from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, best known for supplying the US military with terrifying robotic animals. BigDog is an all-terrain quadruped that doesn't complain when asked to carry heavy loads; Cheetah can run at 29mph, though its loud engine purr means you wouldn't bet on it surprising a wildebeest. Or the Taliban. Google has so far refused to reveal how much it has paid for Boston Dynamics or what its plans for the robots are. But the search giant might need to rethink its "don't be evil" motto if it plans on reinventing itself as a futuristic arms dealer. What other sinister applications could it have in mind for this robot pooch and kitty? For starters, there's the lucrative online gambling market. BigDog would offer Google the perfect introduction. Just imagine the thrills of the three-mile al-Qaida Handicap chase, in which a field of 28 robotic hounds battle against eac ...

Why Google is buying maker of military robots : SAN FRANCISCO: Google may be gearing up to build robots that resemble props in science-fiction movies as the ambitious internet company expands into yet another technological frontier. To gather the expertise and research it needs, Google has purchased eight companies that specialize in robotics this year. The acquisitions are being assembled into a new robotics division headed by Andy Rubin, who oversaw Google's development of Android, now the world's leading mobile operating system. Google added more pieces to its growing toolbox of robotics late last week with the purchase of Boston Dynamics, a military contractor that has raised intrigue by releasing videos of its inventions in recent years. Those inventions include a four-legged robot capable of galloping past Olympian sprinters and a jumping contraption that can leap onto tall buildings. Another video of a creepy-looking four-footed machine has been watched more than 15 million times since it was poste ...
Google acquires Boston Dynamics, a leading robotics company Ars Technica Ron Amadeo Boston Dynamics A few days ago, word got out that Google was building a robotics division. Now, it's already making huge waves in the industry: the New York Times reports that Google has acquired Boston Dynamics, one of the most advanced robotics companies to date. The company will join the new Robotics Division, headed by former Android chief Andy Rubin. Boston Dynamics has typically done work for DARPA and the Pentagon. The company is mostly known for its noisy, four-legged robots, with names like BigDog and AlphaDog. The robots can traverse difficult terrain like snow, muddy mountainside, and ice, and they can even stay upright after a surprise kick from a human. BigDog can carry up to 340 lbs and was originally developed for DARPA as a military pack mule. They've since affixed an arm to BigDog that can throw a cinder block up to 17ft. The company has also worked on faster four-legged robots, like the Cheetah, which can ...
Yep, Google bought out those crazy military robots from Boston Dynamics. And are working on a quantum computer with AI. All hail Skynet.
Great, not only has google teamed up with nsa to create the second generation quantum computer capable of breaking encrypted websites (banks etc.) fairly quickly, because it's so bloody fast it might be capable of AI, but now they are investing heavily into robotics. Skynet here? excerpt: So Google is building a new class of autonomous systems that might do anything… To that end, Boston Dynamics is now the eighth robotics firm Google has bought over the past six months. The search engine giant has been tight-lipped so far about what exactly it plans to do with all of these robots, but it is clear that Boston Dynamics is spearheading a revolution — a robotic revolution.
Google has bought the robotics company that develops various scary animal-like robots for the Pentagon. This means that GOOGLE is now officially a PENTAGON CONTRACTOR. Yes. The idea behind Cheetah and Big Dog is to provide robot drones which can chase, attack and kill people in rugged mountain environments... And Google have just bought the company. It is very very obvious that the STREET VIEW project will provide the 'BRAIN' for these killer robots, so they can hunt and stalk us and 'know' what all our houses, cars and gardens look like. I know that sounds PARANOID. But - let's face it, those streetview cars have been found out stealing wifi passwords and BOSTON DYNAMICS - the company which makes these robots is a Pentagon/DARPA contractor. Boston Dynamics is the eighth robotics company bought up by Google this year. It is also VERY OBVIOUS that Google GLASS is actually a military project in disguise... Its a sort of on-head super-soldier search/record device. Google GLASS is an interface for your ...
Can you imagine what Google will do with a robotics company that it has acquired. Google bought Boston Dynamics whose work has been sponsored by the US military. Among robots that have been made by Boston Dynamics is Cheetah. This robot can walk at 29 mph. The person in charge of robotics was the Google man who was the brain behind the Android operating system. So how will robots be involved in our daily lives in the future? This is the eighth robotics company acquired by Google.

NASA unveils 6-foot 'superhero robot' Valkyrie by Tim Hornyak original Valkyrie robot Valkyrie has 44 axes of movement and interchangeable arms. (Credit: IEEE Spectrum ) What if NASA's Robonaut grew legs and indulged in steroids? The result might be close to what NASA has unveiled: Valkyrie is a humanoid machine billed as a "superhero robot." Developed at the Johnson Space Center, Valkyrie is a 6.2-foot, 275-pound hulk designed to compete in the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC). It will go toe to toe with the Terminator-like Atlas robot from Boston Dynamics in what's shaping up to be an amazing modern-day duel. In an interesting twist, Valkyrie seems to be a girl. While officially genderless, "Valkyrie" (a nickname, since the official designation is R5) evokes the goddess-like females of Norse myth. Its Iron Man-style glowing chest ring nestles in a pronounced bosom that contains linear actuators for waist rotation. "We really wanted to design the appearance of this robot to be one that when you saw it (yo ...

Because of the risks involved in rescue aid workers and human response teams, DARPA awarded Boston Dynamics, Inc. a $10.9 million contract to manufacture humanoid robots that are bi-pedal, built like humans and have a sensor head with on-board computing capabilities. Completion of the project is expected for August of 2014. These robots are being created to assist in excavation and rescue missions, according to DARPA . They could also be employed to evacuation operations during either man-made or natural disasters. Kent Massey, director of advanced programs for HDT Robotics , who attended the DARPA meeting in which the purpose of the allocation of humanoid robotic technology was explained, said: “The goal of this Grand Challenge is to create a humanoid robot that can operate in an environment built for people and use tools made for people. The specific challenge is built around an industrial disaster response.” Another of DARPA’s interests into robotics is the Avatar for the allocation of bi-pedal r ...

Boston Dynamics has improved the LS3 "Alphadog" — a robotic, four-legged craft to be stealthier and more intelligent. |
This week, robotics company Boston Dynamics dazzled us with the latest member of its robot menagerie: a robot that looks and acts like a mule, with hoof-like feet, a trotting gait and special sensors that enables it to follow a human over difficult terrain.
The US military is developing a robotic pack mule to accompany soldiers in the field. Called "AlphaDog", the machine bears an uncanny resemblance to a real pack mule and is the latest product of US robotics company Boston Dynamics. Powered by www.newslook.com Producer : Reuters

..for some reason, I'm just a little uncomfortable with where this is heading.
It's obvious the engineers at Boston Dynamics were aiming for the stars when they named their four-legged robot Cheetah. And they bagged a star, sort of, when they turned the gizmo loose for a speed test on a treadmill, cranking him up to a speed of 28.
Developed for DARPA, Boston Dynamics' Cheetah robot broke a new speed record recently, and it's capable of running at 28.3 mph, on a treadmill. That's faster than Usain Bolt, the current fastest man on Earth. Usain Bolt's fastest speed over 20 meters was 27.78 mph. The Che

I found nothing on this as I did research.
Move over Big Dog, Boston Dynamics is working on the Cheetah robot:
Did ya think I would forget that the USA is trying to develop a perfect killing machine? Not that they do not already have them, they are called soldiers who do their jobs, quite well as a matter of fact and tempered with 'discretion' during times of need. But what they really want is a machine that does not have any weaknesses like 'discretion.' Can you say, "I'LL BE BACK!" at 30 miles and hour?

Shoot to Kill: Autonomous Robots Developed By DARPA Will Not Question Orders The Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency (DARPA) Autonomous Robotic Manipulation (ARM) program seeks to find ways to utilize different remote robotic manipulation systems that are controlled by humans. This program is divided into 3 aspects: • Hardware: to design dexterous multi-fingered robotic hands • Software: develop complex algorithms for grasping, manipulation and sensory perception • Outreach: beta-testing robotics in public forums to further study robotic autonomy In 2010, DARPA revealed a robot at the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International Conference in Denver that was interactive in a public forum. Participants would write software and have the robot preform specified tasks. The goal of this event was to show that robots were being developed by the US government to preform “dangerous tasks” such as disarming an explosive device thereby reducing “significant human interaction”. Universi ...

There is a BBC documentary about the search for artificial intelligence (if you search artificial intelligence BBC documentary, its the first that comes up) on youtube.com. It is amazing. Anyone in the cognitive sciences needs to watch it. To look at the current state of most cognitive disciplines in academia and then to see how far ahead cognitive science is at places like Honda, Boston Dynamics, Hanson Robotics, GE, Lockheed Martin, IBM (referring to Watson here), Etc. it is mind boggling.
