As I sit in my office working on processing hundreds of photos from my Southwest trip, I'm listening to some of my favorite musicians, Sammy Davis, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and of course my personal favorite, Dean Martin, and I can't help but to imagine them standing there with their big bands on the other side of the room, playing these classics live in my office. Sometimes I wish my office was an old 1930s era piano bar. This smoothie next to me would be a full glass of Frescobaldi Chianti with the bottle sitting behind it. The humidor on my right would be filled with the finest Arturo Fuentes and Partagas cigars and of course these speakers would be replaced with a baby grand piano, horns and microphones accompanied by the greatest musicians of any era. That must be what heaven is like, I think. Sorry. OK, back to work. Play on, Louis...

Concert Will Revive Your Memories Remember all those early rock and roll hit songs by Paul Anka, Fabian, Bobby Vee, Bobby Darin, Sam Cooke, Ricky Nelson, the Everly Brothers, and Frankie Avalon? It’s hard to believe, but most of those tunes are now more than 50 years old. Still, they have a special place in our hearts and our memories. That’s why on October 5, Columbus’ Bill Cohen will perform a concert of many of these songs from the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. Bill will be backed up by a top-notch band, consisting of Brian Szuch, Rebecca Stansbury, and Renilda Marshall. The songs won’t be the only thing to rekindle fond memories and thoughts. Trivia questions about early 1960’s fads, fashions, news events, and rock songs will be featured. So will a display of the era’s albums and other memorabilia. Refreshments and a couple of fun surprises are also in store. The event is set for Saturday October 5 at 7 p.m. in the social hall of the Overbrook Presby ...

tom dowd was the man behind all these black people Dowd took a job at a classical music recording studio until he obtained employment at Atlantic Records. His first hit was Eileen Barton's "If I Knew You Were Comin', I'd Baked a Cake." He soon became a top recording engineer there and recorded popular artists such as Ray Charles, The Drifters, The Coasters, Ruth Brown and Bobby Darin, including Darin's famous rendition of Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht's "Mack the Knife". He captured jazz masterpieces by John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker. It was Dowd's idea to cut Ray Charles' recording of "What'd I Say" into two parts and release them as the A-side and B-side of the same single record. Dowd worked as an engineer and producer from the 1940s until the beginning of the 21st century. He recorded albums by many artists including Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Derek and the Dominos, Rod Stewart, Wishbone Ash, Cream, Lulu, Chicago, The Allman Brothers Band, Joe Bonamassa, The J. Stars In Their Eyes 2013 is a triumph!! After a gripping sing off, featuring the three acts with the most votes from a near 200 strong audience, it was the Mike Gaskell and Sam Birchall combo that were crowned as 2013 winners.Their performance as McFly pipped Will Gregory as Olly Murs into second place with last years winner Luke Wilkinson as Noel Gallagher, third. The evening, compered as usual by the very entertaining Tony Clark, was opened up by ex player and current sponsor, Tony Welsby, fresh from his (the) Hot Tub (Outlet). Tony demonstrated that all those nights out in Blackpool had not just been about drinking, as he delivered a great rendition of Mack The Knife as Bobby Darin, crooning of the highest order. In 1954, guitarist Danny Cedrone died following a freak accident; 10 days after he had recorded the lead guitar break on ‘Rock Around The Clock’ with Bill Haley and His Comets. By request, here's my setlist I played at Wednesday Night Hop. It was super fun to DJ, I tried to do 3-song blocks for each genre (but didn't always succeed) before switching to another genre. I also varied tempos within the genre to keep things interesting, and boosted the overall bpm by a bit. Normally I would keep the first hour under 130 bpm for beginners, but this time I raised it to 150 bpm, considering that James and Audrey were playing songs at 150 and 155 bpms during their level 1 class. I thought the beginners could use faster songs for their Charleston. :) My Baby Just Cares for Me - Nina Simone (120) Beyond the Sea - Bobby Darin (137) Steppin' Out with My Baby - The North Star Jazz Ensemble (150) In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening - Rosemary Clooney (138) Jersey Bounce - Benny Goodman (136) A Viper's Moan - Willie Bryant (chant) Et Son Orchestre (150) Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives to Me - Sidney Bechet (137) Potato Head Blues - The Jim Cullum Happy Jazz Band - (191) It Don't Mean a Thi ...

Whiting and Johnny Mercer's classic song "Have You Got Any Castles, Baby?" from 1937. Please enjoy

I always find it comical when I'm driving around, especially crowded areas, and I'm blasting my music - which is usually Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra - and I get the funniest/dirtiest looks. I used to believe the disapproving stares were because it was some sort of vulgar song and the lyrics were questionable (which I listen to also), but the more I pay attention to when I jam to my Rat Pack and Bobby Darin and Deano, the looks still come. From all age groups. Which leads me to the conclusion - it's probably just the volume. And come on, lets be honest, no one - and I mean no one - can listen to 'Mac The Knife' or 'Runaround Sue' or 'Sherry' at a normal, decent volume.

Yes, yes I am a :p I'm a huge fan of Jerry Lee, Elvis, Bobby Darin, Sinatra, the list could go on!
People need to stray away from crappy rap music, pop music, and country. Come into the light. Listen to Sergei Rachminov, Bobby Darin, Fedde le Grand, Kaskade, Deadmau5, and Armin. I could go on forever with this list but lets just kind've throw away bad music and listen to better beautiful music. Not hipster bands, not rappers with bad intentions, not nothin for anybody. People need to become more personal with the music and let it flow with them. Let it in your soul you heathens!
I'm so thankful & grateful for Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Fankie Valli, Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Mel Torme, & Paul Anka! I should have been born in the 30's to enjoy my teens in the 40's & as a young adult in the 50's

Day in the Life is a song by the English rock band The Beatles written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, based on an original idea by Lennon. It is the final track on the group's 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Since its original album release, "A Day in the Life" has been released as a B-side, and also on various compilation albums. It has been covered by other artists including The Fall, Bobby Darin, Sting, Neil Young, Jeff Beck, The Bee Gees, Mae and since 2008, by Paul McCartney in his live performances. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it the 26th greatest song of all time. There is some dispute about the inspiration for the first verse. Many believe that it was written with regard to the death of Tara Browne, the 21-year-old heir to the Guinness fortune and close friend of Lennon and McCartney, who had crashed his Lotus Elan on 18 December 1966 when a Volkswagen pulled out of a side street into his path in Redcliffe Gardens, Earls Court. In numerous interviews, Lennon claimed this wa ...
