Splish Splash//Bobby Darin No joke, one of my favorite songs as a kid.
Bobby Darin had three hit records under his belt when he announced his goal in life: "I want to be a legend by the time I'm twenty-five." He didn't make it, but Bob Dylan did. Searching out the sources of every sort of American music — from the rock and roll childhood he shares with his fans to the depression balads our parents might have known, from the apocalypse of Robert Johnson to the city flash of Muddy Waters, from the old testament of the Carter Family to the ageless earth of Johnny Cash — Dylan found what he was looking for, and his impact on the Sixties has been devastating and magnificent. And that impact is perhaps as much a result of Dylan's personal stance as it is a result of his music. Hard to find, hard to find out about, Dylan held back from the usual nonsense and the honest curiosity that surrounds the star and created, perhaps to protect himself, perhaps for fun, a style of resistance, allegory, irony and humor that pervaded both his songs and his appearances in public. And more th ...

I was on a "La Mer" kick which led to asking why I was listening to Bobby Darin which led to Robbie Williams and Take That.
Hugh no. It's never ok to put new words to Mac the Knife. And you're really good but you are no Bobby Darin.
I do have to admit that on the long drive back from Windsor, I was all Elvis'd out and all Dino'd out... so I spent a long while listening to two other favorites, Bobby Darin and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Ok.. I have re-thought my plans to open a geriatric karaoke bar..not that I don't think it's still a good idea..it's just that I had always thought we would start about 2 in the afternoon and pretty much start shutting it down around 8:00pm. Still think that's a good plan, but I thought our music selection would be nothing older than the 40s or newer than the 70s. That's where my problem is. Just recorded AETN's 50s and 60s music. So, here's my problem..I think (hope) what they have on here is 70s because I really don't like the music. Starts out with Fats Domino and Bobby Darin..ok..I'm good..then we get into "wanna be the Beatles" groups..and what I think are "one hit wonders" I don't know who they are and don't like their music..here are the names.. The Gentrys The Kingsmen Manfred Man The McCoys Tommy James and the Shondells Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin (OK..I get them) The Foundations Steam So..I'm thinkin..no 70s..might look into the 30s..I'll get back to you.. Oh..and if you're about to tell ...

I have been watching the Jack Benny show lately on one of those cool old television channels. I love him! I had never watched it before so this is a new found love of his humor. I love his style. And he has amazing guests like Bobby Darin, Bobby Rydell, Nat King Cole, and on and on and on. I remember my grandma loved him. On jacks 39th birthday in 1933 he had a birthday celebration show. He remained 39 for 41 years because he said there's nothing funny about 40. After my grandmothers 39th birthday she remained 39 just like Jack Benny. I sure am enjoying getting to know him!

Today is the 100th day of our Challenge. The Billboard Hot 100 50th Anniversary Charts are historical charts from the Hot 100's first 50 years, August 1958 through July 2008 The songs in the "50th Anniversary" charts had to appear on the Hot 100 in order to be counted. This may create some confusion (for example: many great country artists and songs are not on the "50th Anniversary" chart because, while very popular on the country charts they didn't cross over to the Hot 100). Also, keep in mind the Hot 100 started in August 1958 so any prior songs are not listed, including some popular Elvis Presley songs. Here are the top 10 All-Time Hot 100 top songs in order. This took place back in Spring of 1959 , right after Bobby Darin released his smash hit "Dream Lover'. Dan Gaylor`s 2 older sisters threw a party at their house on Virginia St. in the middle of Boogerville , the boys of the neighborhood built a dance floor in their back yard. The younger kids were allowed to watch the party from the shadows --long as they kept their mouths shut , about who was kissing who. The party was rocking on , my buddy Raymond Mathis was putting that belly rub motion (slow dancing) on the girls --boy had them all lined up to dance with him , he was smooth dancer , he showed me that one. The party was all fun & games until 'daddy cool' came up , Grover Parsons was tall, blonde , well built & had great personality . Grover got jealous of the attention Raymond was getting & decided to 'whip' him ---wrong decision !! Raymond was laid back fellow until you fooled with him --then that rattlesnake came out of him. Best us young'uns could figure --it started in the kitchen , spill ...

Bobby Caldwell, stay away from Bobby Darin's music. You cannot sing Beyond the Sea to save your life. You are awful, and people who cannot sing should not try an awesome song like that.

From Judy Collins' autobiography: This is from a chapter in her book where she talks about getting ready to record her third album of folk music for Elektra Records: “Walter Raim took me on a quick plane trip out to Las Vegas in the summer of 1963 to hear Bobby Darin at the Flamingo Hotel. Walter wanted me to meet Jim McGuinn, a young guitar player and singer who was working with Darin, to see if he might be a good match for the new album. We got dressed up for dinner and were shown to a table next to the stage, where we ordered drinks and settled back to watch a master perform. I had not been to a club like this since going to see Tempest Storm, and I felt very out of my depth. The folk clubs I was playing did not have waiters in black tie and drinks in frosted glass, but I soon settled in with a martini of the right size–extra large–and got comfortable. I was unprepared for Darin’s sophistication, his down-to-earth humor, and his wonderful voice. He came onstage, dark haired, slender, almos ...
Here's another piece I've written about music and racism. This time, its about the "Good Guys" ROCKERS AGAINST RACISM Last week, I wrote a piece about right-wing influenced music. This is to counter the assumption that all the artists of the 50s/60s were either indifferent to racism or part of the problem. The position of the folk artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton is well-known. All of them, and others, took part in Civil Rights protests and stood with Dr. King on his many rallies. Another staunch anti-racist and also very opposed to war was Bobby Darin. He recorded several songs opposing the Vietnam war and often gave his services free to anti-war fund raisers. There was also a story that when at a theatre where he was due to play, one of the technicians made an anti-Semitic remark. Bobby overheard him and knocked him out. The comic actor, Sid James was involved in a similar incident. In the 50s, many black artists suffered from the form of apartheid that operated in various par ...
A HAPPY FAMILY...can achieve anything! According to Michael J. Fox "family is not an important thing. Its everything. George Bernard Shaw described a happy family as an earlier heaven; affirming the words of David Ogden Stiers which states that "family means no one gets left behind or forgotten". Come to think of it, if the great Walt Disney could write that "A man should never neglect his family for business" then according to the very words of Bobby Darin: "my family comes first". Jodi Picoult woke up one morning thinking about wolves and realized that wolf packs function as families. "Everyone has a role, and if you act within the parameters of your role, the whole pack succeeds, and when that falls apart, so does the pack". George Santayana summarizes that "family is one of nature's masterpieces". Bo Bennet advices that you "Spend some time this weekend on home improvement; improve your attitude toward your family", because "In every conceivable manner, the family is link to our past, bridge to our fu ...
Late last year, the international musical community lost an icon with the passing of the great Mr. Bob Rozario. He was a Las Vegas great for fifty years, and he made his mark with many stars, including Tony Orlando and Dawn, Bobby Darin, Louis Prima, Donny and Marie Osmond, and Dennis Bono, just to name a few. His legacy continues, as we still feel his influence every day. Tomorrow, join Joe DiNunzio as he pays tribute to the great Mr. Rozario at the Sunset Station at 1:30PM inside Club Madrid during "Afternoon Affair." The show, hosted by Mark O'Toole, also features musical director Kenny Davidsen and an appearance by the new group Divas3. Please join in honoring Bob Rozario and appreciating the Las Vegas music scene. We hope to see you there.

DVD - The Best of Johnny Carson - This is a DVD of Johnny Carson in 1956 on the Johnny Carson Show on CBS. It's very interesting. He did a short monologue and then went into skits or sketches about various topics. Not very good according to today's standards but television was still developing. His timing in response to guests' comments was right on but people didn't laugh as they would have if he made the same retort 20 years later on the tonight show. Perhaps they weren't used to laughing to him. The DVD also includes another of his shows "Carson's Cellar" and "The Johnny Carson Morning Show." On disc two, there are two "Who Do You Trust" - a game show he hosted - similar to "You Bet Your Life". Ed McMahon is with him on the game show. There is a guest appearance on the Jack Benny Show and some specials not including Carson. Carson hosts the All Star Comedy Show. Bobby Darin and friends is an enjoyable song and dance special. Ditto for the Frank Sinatra Timex Special. The second dvd conclud ...

Beyond The Sea - This is the life story of my very favorite singer Bobby Darin. I absolutely love Kevin Spacey, big fan of his & he plays Mr Darin to perfection, has his mannerisms down 2 a t and he has the most amazing voice. Its a visual treat with the sets & costumes not to mention the song & dance routines. The cast are great but there is something about it i just dont like & unfortunatly subsequent viewings have yet 2 change my opinion. A real shame because its almost perfect. 8/10.

1964 Unlimited Hydroplane Rookie Driver of the Year, 1964 the Year of the Beatles. Many of the unlimited hydroplane fraternity believe that I think I never make a mistake Well here is a whopper. Read the Beatles Roostertail story: Sid Bernstein, the misty-eyed music promoter who booked such top acts as Jimi Hendrix, Judy Garland and the Rolling Stones and hit the highest heights when he masterminded the Beatles' historic concerts at Shea Stadium and Carnegie Hall, died Wednesday. He worked with Garland, Duke Ellington and Ray Charles, promoted Dion, Bobby Darin and Chubby Checker, and managed Esy Morales, the Rascals and Ornette Coleman. Remembering Ruth Brown on her birthday In the Fifties, Ruth Brown was known as “Miss Rhythm,” a testament to her stature as a female rhythm & blues singer whose only serious competition was Dinah Washington. Signed to Atlantic Records in 1948 by label founders Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson, Brown gave the fledgling company its third-ever hit with “So Long,” a simple, bluesy showcase for her torchy, church- and jazz-schooled voice that entered the Billboard R&B chart in September of 1949. “Teardrops in My Eyes,” her second R&B hit (and seventh single release), brought out her more swaggering, aggressive side, and she was rewarded with her first Number One R&B hit. For the duration of the Fifties, Brown dominated the R&B charts and even crossed over into rock and roll with some success with “Lucky Lips” (written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller) and “This Little Girl’s Gone Rockin’” (written for Brown by Bobby Darin). But her best work was to be found on such red-hot mid-Fifties R& ...

Happy birthday Bobby Darin.A little late. I have already admitted the fact that I loved the music of Rick Nelson and Johnny Rivers.I also bought Bobby Darin albums in the late 60's and early 70's..I watched his TV show..He always had fantastic musical guests..Stevie Wonder, Linda Ronsatadt and Judy Collins are three I remember.this guy could play and sing any genre of music. Bobby Darin sang Jazz, Country, Standards, R&b,or Folk music, really well. Bobby could play guitar, drums, piano and harmonica, really well. Here is the true test of greatness, Bobby Darin could dance...man, he could flat bust-a-move! Those of you who have witnessed my dancing will know, it is not exactly "poetry in motion"...I always thought it would be cool to be able to dance...dancing was the deal breaker on many of my early dates...I had not heard the old saying "dance like nobody's watching"...I, in fact did,I am sorry to report that this does not work...I am really off track again... Bobby was also a master songwriter...is there ...

Gilmore Rizzo is a self-described Italian-American. Using his heritage as a taking-off point, Rizzo combines his cultural identity, the songs that he was brought up listening to, that were sung by famous Italian-Americans, with stories about his relationships with the female members of his family, the recipes they used to cook, and heartfelt memories. – All these ingredients make for a delicious evening of entertainment. He is cousin to both American-Italian legendary singer Bobby Darin & Jazz Flugelhorn player Chuck Mangione - so a love of music and theatre is in his DNA. It was only translated to English by Jack Lawrence (his big hit song was "Linda") after it was popular in France. Google it sometime and enjoy the beautiful French versions.

Bobby Darin, Rick Nelson, Gene Pitney, Del Shannon - lots of excellent performers. but innovators & multi-geration leaders? hardly. not even close to Parsons or Buffett.
