Forty years ago, on a Saturday night, June 1st 1974 I was finishing up my junior year at Kent State University. I probably should have been studying for upcoming final exams. Instead, I decided to go to the KSU gym, spend the astronomical sum of $2 and listen to four different bands in a sit anywhere you want rock concert. My good friend and fraternity brother Kip Gunn, had seen a group several months earlier that had been the opening act for the somewhat forgetable Black Oak Arkansas, raved about the band and had gone out and bought an eight track tape of the group's second album. The album was titled "The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle and I had heard it several times prior to attending the concert that night. As things would have it, the supposed headline act that night, The Michael Stanley Band opened the show, so that they oould play another gig over in nearby Akron. Bruce Springsteen closed out the concert that night and I was blown away. I've been blown away by the words and mus ...
Bedford Fair History Becky Wolfe’s memories of some of the entertainment at the Fair included: 1970 – Porter Wagner and Dolly Parton 1971 – The Blue Ridge Quartet 1972 – Sonny James 1973 – Oak Ridge Quartet 1974 – Black Oak Arkansas (This group was a hard core rock band and included problems that were often associated with that kind of music. Included in the problems was a girl found unconscious, under some newspapers on the race track. The Fair spent many hours dealing with the pubic over that show.) 1975 – Lynn Anderson 1976 – Mel Tillis 1977 – Jim Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius 1978 & 1980 – Bill Anderson (A crowd favorite) 1979 – Mac Wiseman and Barbara Mandrell 1980 – The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band 1981 – Susan Raye and Kenny Price ...to be continued.

Today's musical ℞: This song is the fourth track off of Black Oak Arkansas' sophomore release, 1972's "Keep the Faith." It was a concert staple and perfectly suited to be a set-opener due to its manic energy and the three-guitar harmony of Ricky Lee "Ricochet" Reynolds, Stanley "Goober" Knight, and Harvey "Burley" Jett. Love 'em or hate 'em, there's never been any other band quite like 'em. While they were definitely ahead of their time in so many ways, I think it could be said that this gang of hillbilly hippies was either born 100 years too late or 100 years too soon. They were known for their frontman Jim "Dandy" Mangrum and his trusty washboard along with their cover of the 1956 LaVern Baker hit "Jim Dandy." It hit on the pop chart in 1973. The flamboyant Mangrum's gravelly voice and wild on-stage antics garnered a lot of attention for the band as they toured incessantly as one of the leading live acts of the '70s. His lewd 'n' crude, in-your-face stage persona was very influential to many singers t ...

What better way to start a week than with Van Halen as my playlst. I always look forward to the first 6 albums. And I try to forget that Gary Cherone was even in the band... lol I have 13 some odd studio albums to go through, and ton of live stuff, so should be a great week of classic American rock!

Ten interesting facts about Shawn Lane 1. He started playing guitar at 10 and was gigging by 12. 2. The popular rock band Black Oak Arkansas tried to get him to join them when he was only 13. He declined, but joined them at age 14. 3. He read between 3 and ten books A DAY on every topic under the sun. He would get interested in something, go to the library and take out every book available on that topic and read them all in a few days. He remembered everything he read. 4. He didn't practice playing guitar and wrote all his songs on the piano. 5. He wrote all the music, played every instrument, produced, arranged and engineered everything on his groundbreaking Powers of Ten album. 6. He started working on a computer with recording software - his first time recording or using a computer - at 10 PM one evening. By 6 AM he had not only learned how to use the software, but had finished the first cut for the album. 7. Almost all his tracks are "first takes". 8. When Billy Gibbons first heard Shawn, he was so me ...

These are the rules if you want to play: Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen albums you've heard that will always stick with you. List the first fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes. Tag fifteen friends, including me, because I'm interested in seeing what albums my friends choose. To do this, go to your Notes tab on your profile page, paste rules in a new note, cast your fifteen picks, and tag people in the note. Rob's picks... AC/DC - Powerage, UFO - Lights Out, Rolling Stones - High Times and Green Grass, Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Metalica - Ride the Lightning, Nirvana - Nevermind, Butthole Surfers - Independent Worm Saloon, Led Zeppilin - IV, Kiss - Alive, Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever, King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King, Black Oak Arkansas - Raunch and Roll, Rush - 2112, Aerosmith - 1st Album, Van Halen - 1st Album. Wow remembering lots more now, guess I didn't leave those braincells on the Grateful Dead Tour after all, lol.
doesn't want to criticize Justin Bieber for walking off the stage because of food poisoning but Black Oak Arkansas would have stayed and played two encores, crapped pants and all. The Oak!..
Today in Rock History, October 10, 1955 David Lee Roth is born in Bloomington, Indiana. While attending school in Pasadena, California he met up with Eddie and Alex Van Halen. In 1972 the Van Halen brothers were playing in a band called Mammoth. They asked David to join them as their lead singer and changed the band name to Van Halen in 1974. Roth's stage persona was heavily influenced by that of Black Oak Arkansas vocalist Jim "Dandy" Mangrum. On April 1, 1985, Roth and Van Halen parted ways for the first time. Here’s Van Halen in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1983

I have a confession to make (which I will prob get bashed by my hard rock friends for this one). But I was a drummer for YEARS in an all girl band, my childhood had a soundtrack of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Black Oak Arkansas, Journey, Styx, Golden Earring, Jim Croce, Janis, Jimi, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, etc. Then at home, Mom loved Elvis, Porter Wagner, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, etc. My grandfather.Lawrence Welk & Hee Haw. I belong to Generation X. But, Marilyn Manson, Tool, Sublime, Disturbed, Shinedown are all staples of my musical diet now. My confession? Gordon Lightfoot has been the downloader of choice for about a week now. :) Let the bashing begin!! (P.S. I AM THE BIGGEST ELTON JOHN FAN ALIVE!! ♥)

The GEORGE JONES that I knew: Growing up in or living in Nashville you never knew/know who you would/will meet. Though I haven't lived there in years I still go there occasionally for various things .Play music, visit old friends,or Dr.Appointments etc: Over the years I have met and spoken with many legends in the music/show business (if only in passing ) Roy Acuff, Johnny Cash and his wife June, Alice Cooper, Black Oak Arkansas, Paul McCartney ,Leon Russell and Sylvester Stallone to name a few. You never know who you will meet in the Music City but the one that stands out in my mind was George Jones . Several years ago I had to have surgery on my vocal chords to remove some polyps. I went to the Otolarynology group across from Vanderbilt. They were recognized as being the best at this sort of thing and indeed from all the Head shots with thank yous hanging in the office you could tell that many major artists trusted them. Anyway, I signed in for my appointment and sat down in the waiting room next to a y ...

He recorded many artists some of whom became quite successful and famous including ... Bobby Lee Trammel, Narvel Felts, Charlie Rich, Scotty Moore, Ace Cannon, The World Famous Sabers, Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers, The Fabulous Esquires, blues legend Willie Bloom, Jim Messina, Ray Coble, Knowbody Else aka Black Oak Arkansas, The Joe Lee Combo, The Bill Black Combo, Larry Donn Gillahan, The New Castle Blues, The 1932 Ballroom Blues, Jamie Holmes, The Tuesday Blues, and God only knows how many I'm leaving out, because I just can't think of them all. Well gang, I'm sittin' here watchin' a PBS show about my good Arkansas buddy. "Love For Levon!" *** I miss that rascal. The PBS show has all kinda folks who were friends of Levon Helm, but there was always a weird kinda bond between musicians who were actually FROM Arkansas... and I reckon that's because there just wasn't that many of us! Levon was always talkin about us gettin' together to record in Woodstock at his place and The Band and Black Oak Arkansas touring together in a circus tent! Jim wanted to do it on a riverboat! But... time flies... and we continually walk by those roads left untraveled. Levon left us last year... and Rick Danko, my friend and bass player for The Band left before that. Now... my bro Stan has left us, too. Gang, we can't do all we plan in life, but cherish those close to you while they're here.. and don't be afraid to say I love ya to your friends and family. Time is short... way too short. I have a "Ramblin' " story about Levon in my collection of tales which I will soo .. ...
A truck driver and I talked about famous people we met. He met Willie Nelson and Waylan Jennings. In the 70's and early 80"s I worked at a Sheraton...the hotel in Greenville, SC at the time. I met and partied with Waylon Jenings, Paul Newman, his wife Joanne Woodward(from Greenville) Johnny and Edgar Winter, Ted Nugent, Joe Namath (my hero @ 13yrs.) Molly Hachet, Crosby, Stills, Nash, Kool & The Gang, Three Dog Night, Foghat, Black Oak Arkansas, Charlie Daniels. that's all I can think of. Some house bands @ the hotel let them sit in after the show. Never heard back from anyone except Joe Namath (we went out partying),, and Joann Woodward She is on my FB list.
It has been made official !! The Emilio Emilio Group, with Trinidads own Johnny Wells on drums & vocals, will be one of the headliner bands for this years 'Tommy Bolin Festival' Aug. 1-3, in the hometown where it all started, Sioux City Iowa. A Denver Colorado event with the Tommy Bolin Tribute Band, Johnnie Bolin of Black Oak Arkansas, Emilio Emilio Group, and featured artists yet to be announced, may precede the Iowa Bolinfest. As we all know, the late great legendary guitarist Tommy Bolin, was a leader of such groups as Colorado's own Zephyr and Energy, the James Gang, and Deep Purple ! His life was tragically cut short in 1976 at age 25, but his music lives on. Also watch for The Emilio Emilio Group in southern Colorado and the region, in the months to come.

I'm downloading a 2-disc set of Black Oak Arkansas at the Paramount Theater in Seattle (and Portland's Paramount too), from 1973 right now. A friend of mine at work played it for me and I was blown away. He was actually there, very cool. Made me wonder why I didn't pay attention to this awesome album back in the day. Jim Dandy, the singer... David Lee Roth owes him a LOT for basically stealing his whole schtick!
Just bought our tickets for Scotty McCreery, Diamond Rio, Kristen Kelly and Charlie Pride show also bought tickets to go and see the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum and more for our trip to Nashville TN for our 20th Annv which will begin next friday after work for a week. Hi gang. I've been asked about the Knowbody Else stuff that's starting to show up on a compilation CD, and I've decided to spend a bit of time here for all of you who are my friends and family to explain. The first Stax album of Knowbody Else came out in the 60s, and took off like a heard of turtles! Before we were taken over by Ahmet Ernegun and our Atlantic Record family (and the name change to Black Oak Arkansas), we were almost finished with another Knowbody Else album. Jim Stewart of Stax let us go to Atlantic, but wanted the right to release that unfinished album in the future if we ever became a viable commodity! (Fancy talkin'... huh?) This later became "Early Times" by Black Oak Arkansas... released on Stax. All of this you probably already know. What you DON'T know is that before we recorded that first Stax album... we did an entire other Knowbody Else album that was never released! A friend of ours and a musician on his own of some Memphis and world-wide fame, Jim Dickenson, did an album here i ...

So most of my life is predicated by musical moments. Those times in your life where music seems to be a demarcation point. Alice Cooper at the Palace in 1971 I had never seen anything like that. 1972 Yes with King Crimson opening up set 1973 King Crimson at the Palace with Black Oak Arkansas as the opener ( who that that was a good idea) 1973 Mike Siperas and I are visiting a friend at Tufts University and Genesis is playing there that night. 1973 Mott the Hoople at the Palace with Queen as opening act 1974 Genesis doing the Lamb lies Down at the Palace. New Years Eve 1975 seeing Patti Smith, Television & John Cale with Barry Erikson in NYC Bob Marley in 1979 in Vt The Clash in 1982 in Vt ( they showed up in in a bar down the street later) and so many other shows. Music seems to be my lifeline.
On the turntable this morning: the great memories of "Jim Dandy" from Black Oak Arkansas -- --
A little Black Oak Arkansas is JUST what I needed to widen these sleepy eyes this morning. Besides, I sorta consider myself a bit of a Jim Dandy in my own twisted mind. So, without delay, let's run by Swifty (the only place I can afford gas these days), fill up the tank, and GET THIS DAY STARTED!!!

August Jam was a huge outdoor concert held Saturday August 10, 1974 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway outside Charlotte, North Carolina in the United States. The concert promoter was Kaleidoscope Productions and was sponsored by radio stations WAYS and WROQ The concert featured the Allman Brothers Band, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Foghat, Black Oak Arkansas, the Marshall Tucker Band, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Grinderswitch, PFM and others. The Eagles were booked to play but cancelled. It was the largest concert ever held in the state of North Carolina and one of the largest in the U.S. at that time, with an estimated attendance in excess of 200,000. I was there with my friends. Wow it was crazy. People knocked down the fence to get in free. Good times in 74.

“Black Oak Arkansas and ROOR to get the day started” not a bad way to do it
So James how was Black Oak Arkansas? Was Jim Dandy swinging his walker around?
Whew, a full night of classic Southern Rock.Black Oak Arkansas was both very cool (I guess because Jim Mangrum was always one of my fave front guys) and somewhat disappointing (their guitarist was very well versed in huge power chords and the "crowd point" ... not in the finer intricacies of 70s southern boogie and blues-rock). Anyway, Ol' Jim Dandy at times was awe inspiring, at others, reminding me of an athsmatic cross between Hasil Adkins and Mr Rogers.oh well, at least I saw them. The new version of Blackfoot, hand picked by founding member Ricky Medlocke, was quite impressive.nailing versions of "Train Train"... "Highway Song" . and "Wishing Well" among others. guitarist Tim Rossi blew me away.remember that name. Finally, the latest conglomerate to be called "Molly Hatchet" (I believe only Dave Hlubek remains from the first album) was quite enjoyable, with the classic twin guitar leads amid epic length jams. And being a Danny Joe Brown fan, I still thought the vocals were handled very well.not an im ...
