Jaiyeola Ajasa October 15, 2012 Readers discretion strongly advised. Tai Solarin, was not a man of God. With the fear of God, he established the famous Mayflower School Ikenne in 1956. Through honesty and sincerity, he nurtured it to be one of the best secondary schools in Nigeria. With steely righteousness, he practiced what he preached. Solarin, was known to always wear simple khaki shorts and shirt. He believed in the power of education to transform individuals . So rich or poor, Mayflower was home to all. He founded Mayflower out of genuine, unfettered, earnest and heartfelt feeling about Nigeria and the future generation. He could have made a fortune from the school but this incorrigible atheist chose not to. Bishop David Oyedepo, is a man of God. He is the founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide. Professor Aize Obayan, a former Vice Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota has been suspended from her position as director of the Education Commission of the Winners Chapel by the church’s General Overseer, Bishop David Oyedepo. Ms. Obayan was suspended for reportedly altering examination results for several students in the department of Mass Communications. Among the students who benefited from the former VC’s grade alteration was Ms. Obayan’s own daughter. The former VC was accused of perpetrating the academic fraud during her tenure. The former VC’s daughter graduated with a Second Class Upper Division in Mass Communication and is currently doing her National Youth Service Corps service. A source at the university revealed that Ms. Obayan inflated all of her daughter’s scores, otherwise the young woman would have earned a Third Class degree. The Management of Covenant University has finally agreed to reduce to 4 weeks suspension, the expulsion of over 120 students of the institution after they allegedly failed to attend a university assembly. This is after so many criticisms and appeals from stakeholders. According to DailyPost which reported the news, several groups including parents, lawyers and National Human Rights Commission are part of those that appealed to the management of the school for a rethink on the judgement slammed on the students. Meanwhile, sources say the students are expected to resume back to school later this month or early February. It would be recalled that the Bishop David Oyedepo-owned University is known for its strict rules and discipline. Is this good new? Cos i am confused.
CONFRONTING CASSOCKED CRIMINALITY It’s been quite a while I’ve meant to write on this most sensitive and emotive of issues. I watched a video on the net showing Bishop David Oyedepo of the Living Faith Church slap a lady who had come to him for spiritual deliverance. Only recently, he superintended over the expulsion of about 200 students from his school, Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State. Predictably, the reactions have come in torrents: some sympathetic to the rambunctious entrepreneurial priest, most in scathing condemnation. Dealing with opposition is something Oyedepo isn’t very good at. So extracting an apology from him or getting him to reverse his bizarre decision would be the equivalent of a miracle. Let me make it clear from the outset that my commentary is from the position and interest of an insider. Being a Christian and an ordained minister, and having been in this business for a better part of three decades, I think I’m in a fairly strong position to grapple with the issues at ...
The University authorities of Covenant University, Canaanland, Ota in Ogun State, last Saturday expelled over 200 students for varied offences. A source told us that trouble started when the Chancellor of the institution, Bishop David Oyedepo visited the school chapel unannounced and noticed that some students were loitering around the chapel, some talking and others were playing while the Vice Chancellor was giving a speech in the school’s chapel. Our source confirmed that the very strict chancellor was very angry towards the attitude of the students and immediately called on the Dean of Student Affairs, Mr Bassey, for a brief meeting outside the chapel, while other members of staff including the VC joined in the meeting too. It was also gathered that the students knowing the sanctions that can befall them started running into the chapel, scrambling for available seats while some boys who did not have ties on where seen looking for ways to acquire some, even a group of boys numbering up to five allegedl ...
