Worse centre partnership: Mike Tindall and Andy Farrell or Billy Twelvetrees and Brad Barritt ?
Stuart Lancaster has been plotting his way towards next year’s home World Cup since the summer of 2012, but the great conundrum of English rugby – otherwise known as the red rose midfield – remains unsolved. The national coach has dropped both of his Six Nations centres, Billy Twelvetrees and Luther Burrell, for this weekend’s last hurrah against the All Blacks in Hamilton and if the fresh combination of Kyle Eastmond and Manu Tuilagi click together as readily as they did in Auckland a dozen days ago, it will inevitably lead to a major reassessment of the available options.
ENGLAND today named their team for Saturday’s 1st Test in the Steinlager Series against New Zealand at Eden Park. British and Irish Lions Geoff Parling and Manusamoa Tuilagi are included while there is a return for London Wasps flanker James Haskell after a 12-month absence. Seven players that started against Italy in the RBS 6 Nations are included in the XV – captain Chris Robshaw, Mike Brown, Danny Care, Joe Launchbury, Jonny May, Ben Morgan and David Wilson. England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster said: “We’ve had a good week’s training in Auckland and have prepared well and are ready for the massive challenge ahead. It doesn’t get much bigger than playing New Zealand at Eden Park where they haven’t lost in 20 years but those selected know what they have to do. “Billy Twelvetrees is recovering well from his ankle injury and should be available for the 2nd Test and it’s now a good opportunity for Kyle Eastmond to build on what he achieved in Argentina last summer. “It’s great to welcom ...

England coast past Wales at Twickenham March 9, 2014 England recorded what turned out to be a relatively comfortable win against Wales at Twickenham, beating the visitors 29-18. On a sunny afternoon in South West London the conditions were perfect for running rugby, and England were the ones to make the most of it. The afternoon got off to a great start for the hosts, as Danny Care twice tapped penalties quickly and nipped over under the posts to give England an early 7-0 lead. Luther Burrell dotted down in the corner in the 33rd minute after a superbly weighted grubber through from Billy Twelvetrees, who also had one of his most influential games in an England shirt to date. And while the boot of Leigh Halfpenny kept Wales in touch for the majority of the game, it was a strangely lacklustre performance from the Welshmen, showing little of the attacking verve that they had played with in the previous round against France. statsThe stats back up this assessment. While the teams shared 50% each of possessio ...

Twelvetrees: “You’d be stupid to get too comfortable with your place” February 13, 2014 Billy Twelvetrees has been ever present in the England squad since making his international debut at the start of 2013. His cap tally is now in double figures and the Gloucester playmaker was the only centre to start more than five England games last year. Manu Tuilagi, Brad Barritt, Jonathan Joseph and Kyle Eastmond played alongside Twelvetrees in England’s midfield in 2013 but he is very much enjoying his current partnership with Northampton Saints star Luther Burrell. “The combination has been working well on the pitch and it’s been really loud between myself, Luther and Owen. Luther’s been brilliant since he’s come in and I’m looking forward to hopefully playing alongside him again.” Both players, along with the other thirteen starters of England’s opening two Six Nations fixtures, have been kept in the England camp this week, a strong indication that Stuart Lancaster will name an unchanged li ...
Scotland v England: England player ratings February 10, 2014 15. Mike Brown: 8.5 As solid as ever at the back and counter attacked with real purpose. Second try in as many games was a deserved return for the man who never seems to have a bad game. 14. Jack Nowell: 6.5 Built on last week and has that knack of popping up on the shoulder of the ball carrier, which will surely start paying try-scoring dividends at some stage. Showed some lovely footwork to set up Mike Brown for the try that secured England’s win in the second half. 13. Luther Burrell: 6.5 Another try from Burrell who picked a good line on his way to the whitewash, but the fact that no Scottish defender in the first line of defence laid a hand on him tells you more about their defensive disorganisation than anything else. Still feel like there is more to come from him. 12. Billy Twelvetrees: 7 Better from Twelvetrees, who tailored his game intelligently to the conditions – which were awful. Showed that he can make the hard yards with sever ...
Stuart Lancaster has named an unchanged England squad to travel to Edinburgh for their RBS 6 Nations match against Scotland on Saturday. Jonny May, Ben Morgan and Billy Twelvetrees all travel.
France v England: England player ratings February 3, 2014 15. Mike Brown: 7 Produced a brilliant finish for his first try in international rugby, but was forced to play most of the game on the wing where he is less effective than at fullback. Still managed to carry well and make 66 metres. 14. Jack Nowell: 6 Knocked on with his first touch of international rugby and there were a few other errors that smacked of inexperience, but there was also plenty of good from the Exeter winger. Worked hard to get himself in the game and made a couple of encouraging carries. Errors to be ironed out, but plenty more to come also. 13. Luther Burrell: 7 Was largely anonymous in the first half before roaring into everyone’s consciousness with a brilliant support line to score the try that propelled England into the lead. With his debut out of the way expect him to be more conspicuous next week. 12. Billy Twelvetrees: 5 Not a great afternoon for Twelvetrees. Threw a couple of distinctly average passes for a man that is su ...

Billy Twelvetrees is growing into role as England's trusted Six Nations creator-in-chief
The new England rugby squad got announced today. Just for fun, here's my ideal team: 1. Alex Corbisiero 2. Dylan Hartley 3. Dan Cole 4. Joe Launchbury 5. Courtney Lawes 6. Tom Wood 7. Chris Robshaw (c) 8. Billy Vunipola 9. Ben Youngs 10. Owen Farrell 11. Marlande Yarde 12. Kyle Eastmond (or Billy Twelvetrees) 13. Manu Tuilagi 14. Anthony Watson (or Christian Wade, they're both great) 15. Mike Brown Not a bad team-in-development, though probably not maturing for 2-3 years (by which time Watson will be full-back, George Ford will possibly be in for Farrell, and we'll have a better scrum-half).

He was described during the autumn internationals as simply keeping the England No 13 shirt warm for the injured Manu Tuilagi but Saracen Joel Tomkins has very different ideas. With Lions duo Brad Barritt and Tuilagi injured for the autumn internationals – boss Stuart Lancaster turned to the inexperienced pairing of Tomkins and Gloucester’s Billy Twelvetrees to fire England’s back-line. Without looking fluid at times – Tomkins, who made his international debut in the win over Australia in November and Twelvetrees inspired England to wins over the Wallabies and Argentina, while they even ran the world’s No 1 team close, New Zealand, close at Twickenham.
Billy Twelvetrees will continue to captain Gloucester Rugby as they return to Aviva Premiership action on Sunday, entertaining local rivals Worcester Warriors at Kingsholm (kick off 2pm).
England! Battered and humiliated after their thumping in the Millennium Stadium against Wales at the close of the Six Nations, England have turned their 2013 around since March with a run of four wins and a single loss to the All Blacks at Twickenham. Three of those four wins came against Argentina - two in South America and one back in south-west London - as Stuart Lancaster's mission to build greater depth to his squad ahead of the 2015 Rugby World Cup continued. Shorn of a total of 12 players to the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia by the time Brad Barritt, Billy Twelvetrees and Christian Wade had been flown out (and not including Dylan Hartley's suspension), Lancaster was able to let the likes of Marland Yarde, Kyle Eastmond, Billy Vunipola and more get a taste of Test rugby against the Pumas in their own backyard. Winning the a Test series in Argentina for the first time in 32 years is not an accomplishment to be sniffed at. The tour was also a chance for Lancaster to let the likes of Chris ...

2013 in review: England December 19, 2013 Jamie 1 comment england huddle England’s 2013 began with such promise, entering the Six Nations off the back of the titanic win over New Zealand at the end of the previous year. The first game against Scotland saw the men in white stick to the adventurous style of play that had paid dividends against the All Blacks, but sadly after that the promise shown in these games was not capitalised upon. The rest of the Six Nations campaign saw England revert to type, taking in scrappy wins over Ireland, Italy and France before culminating in that chastening day at Millenium Stadium, when Wales ran amok to *** the title from English hands. A summer tour to face a second string Argentina taught us little, while the Autumn campaign was again a mixed bag – the first half against Argentina was the best rugby England had played since the opening game against Scotland, but then they fell away so catastrophically in the second half that it looked for a while a different tea .. ...

Gloucester sign Lions hooker Hibbard 16th December 2013 06:44 Over the border: Richard Hibbard Related links Teams Gloucester Wales Gloucester have confirmed that Wales and British and Irish Lions hooker Richard Hibbard will be joining the club next season. Following the recent announcement that All Black World Cup winning prop John Afoa would be moving to Kingsholm next season, Hibbard's signing is another huge indication of the club's ambitions and direction moving forward. The Neath born player played for Taibach, Aberavon and Swansea before joining the Ospreys. He made his senior Welsh debut against Argentina in 2006 and scored his first international try against Scotland at Murrayfield in the Six Nations in 2013. England v Argentina: England player ratings November 11, 2013 15. Mike Brown: 6.5 None of the fireworks from last weekend, but still a solid performance from Brown. Has an astute understanding of space that seemingly means he is always in the right place at the right time. 14. Chris Ashton: 5 His stats looked good, and reflected a high work-rate, but there were too many errors and missed opportunities for Ashton to warrant his place in the team next weekend, if a replacement is available. He scored a try (that arguably could have been ruled out had it gone to the TMO), and butchered a one-on-one that he should have finished. He was also stepped far too easily in defence. Better, but not good enough. 13. Joel Tomkins: 5.5 Solid but unspectacular again from Tomkins. Made his tackles but does not look dangerous with ball in hand, and has been unable to get his offloading game going. Looking like merely a custodian of the shirt while Tuilagi is away. 12. England’s central dilemma: solving the midfield crisis September 25, 2013 On 17th November last year, England lined-up to take on Australia at Twickenham with Brad Barritt and Manu Tuilagi wearing 12 and 13 respectively. In the space of a couple of weeks, they have both been side-lined with injury, leaving head coach Stuart Lancaster with a selection dilemma in the midfield. If Barritt’s place in the starting line-up was questionable, Tuilagi’s name was surely one of the first on the teamsheet given his ability to do things on the rugby pitch no other player in the world is capable of – see last weekend’s brutish burst against Newcastle for proof of that. So where does this leave Lancaster et al? His current centre options in the EPS are Billy Twelvetrees, Kyle Eastmond, Anthony Allen, Jonathan Joseph, Joel Tomkins, Luther Burrell and Elliot Daly, leaving plenty of potential combinations. Barritt’s replacement seems fairly obvious. Billy Twelvetrees has been around the England squad for a whil ...

Best of the Weekend: Referees again in the spotlight September 23, 2013 Controversy reigns in Gloucester, Saracens maintain 100% start Gloucester picked up their first win of the season in a nail-biting 26-24 victory over Northampton at Kingsholm, but the game is likely to be remembered for its controversy, rather than its rugby. A superb Northampton try late in the game looked to be enough to send Saints home as winners, but a controversial decision to award Gloucester a penalty after the 80-minute mark, allowed Billy Twelvetrees to kick a much-needed winner for the home side. As if this wasn’t enough to anger the Northampton fans, referee Martin Fox also missed an offside from Gloucester players at the preceding restart, and number eight Ben Morgan seemingly illegally kicking the ball back into the scrum, both of which would have given possession back to Northampton, and effectively ended the game. Leicester and Harlequins both took maximum points, collecting bonus points on their way to beating Newca ...

In 2005, Clive Woodward selected a squad with 20 Englishmen, 11 Irishmen, 10 Welshmen and three Scots despite losing previous two Six Nations poorly. Gatland initially selected 15 welsh, 10 english, 9 irish, and 2 Scots bearing in mind wales have successfully defended Six Nations this year The rest has been picked on form and warranting for injuries and combinations. English press, particulaly telegraph, grow up. If you want to see players like Billy Twelvetrees booting up to start in the name of fairness then you need to re *** how sports teams should be picked.
Brumbies v Lions: Lions player ratings Posted on Jun 18, 2013 15: Rob Kearney: 7 Probably the only Lions back to come out of the game with any credit. Kicked with power and precision, and took a couple of his own up-and-unders. Gatland’s a big fan, but it could still be too late to force his way into the test squad. 14. Christian Wade: 4.5 You’ve got to feel sorry for Wade, who got very little ball and even less space to work in. We all know how good he is, but after such a late arrival and no time to gel with the rest of the backline he was always going to be up against it. Missed crucial tackle for the Brumbies try. 13. Brad Barritt: 4 Anonymous may as well be his middle name. Made one metre from two carries, and four tackles. That was it. 12. Billy Twelvetrees: 4.5 Like Wade, desperately unlucky to have been thrown in quite so far at the deep end. His running stats are even more painful than Barritt’s: two metres from a whopping nine carries. Obviously employed as Gatland’s crash-ball twelve, h ...
Lions' squad to face the Brumbies Tomorrow. It's only a second string side with the big names rested for the test match on Saturday. With about 11 names guaranteed to start on Saturday, there's still a chance for a few players to force their way in. The likes of Sean O'Brien, Justin Tipuric, Rob Kearney, Simon Zebo, and even young Christan Wade could force a spot on the bench. Toby Falateau needs a huge game if he has any hope of even starting the first test which is unlikely even if he does. A weak team to face probably the form team in Super rugby at the minute, so they'll have to be careful. The backline is weak apart from Kearney and the experienced Williams, so this will be a tough game, and I see a first defeat for the Lions here. The player to watch is Rob Kearney, still a more complete full back than Leigh Halfpenny and a good performance could force Halfpenny out onto the wing. Team to face The Brumbies. 15 Rob Kearney 14 Christan Wade 13 Brad Barritt 12 Billy Twelvetrees 11 Shane Williams 10 Stu ...
Brumbies v British and Irish Lions: Preview and prediction Posted on Jun 17, 2013 The final tour game prior to the beginning of the test series sees the Lions travel to Canberra to take on the Brumbies, and given the strengths of the two squads selected, it could well be their biggest challenge to date. British and Irish Lions It’s been a busy week for Warren Gatland’s side who, thanks to a number of injuries, have had to call up the likes of Christian Wade, Billy Twelvetrees and Brad Barritt as cover, whilst Welsh legend Shane Williams has been drafted in with the sole purpose of taking on the Brumbies, and allowing other Lions the chance to rest up ahead of the first test. All four of these players start against the Brumbies, whilst full-back Rob Kearney makes his first start on tour, and Stuart Hogg and Ben Youngs get their last opportunities to try and force their way into Gatland’s test squad. They face the talented duo of Jesse Mogg and Henry Speight in the Brumbies back line, and if they can ...

England name team for second Argentina test Posted on Jun 13, 2013 Marland Yarde will win his first England cap against Argentina this weekend. The 21 year-old from London Irish comes into the side on the left wing to face the Pumas at Velez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires on Saturday. Bath Rugby’s Kyle Eastmond, who made his Test debut in last Saturday’s 32-3 win in Salta, will start for the first time in the No.12 shirt vacated by Lions-bound centre Billy Twelvetrees (Gloucester Rugby). And fly half Stephen Myler will win a first cap if he comes off the replacements’ bench. England are bidding to secure a first series win in Argentina since 1981, when Bill Beaumont’s tourists drew the first and won the second of their two Tests. Head Coach Stuart Lancaster said: “It is great to reward young players who have pushed through this season. They have worked hard to earn their opportunities on this tour. This is a young England side which made a very positive start to the series in Salta. But we expect Arg ...
Concerns in Lions camp over the fitness of Jonny Sexton & Owen Farrell as England utility back Billy Twelvetrees is called into the squad as back-up. Meanwhile, the Wallabies have released Dave Dennis & Rob Horne back to the Waratahs ahead of Saturday's game, further boosting their talent pool after yesterday's decision to release Bernard Foley & Matt Lucas back to Moore Park from their Aussie Sevens World Cup camp. What looked like it may have been a hard fought but probably comfortable victory for the tourists over a depowered New South Wales has just been revamped into a possible boilover. Can't wait.

Youthful England end try drought with 4 tries vs Argentina. More by wing Christian Wade laid on three first-half tries as England defeated Argentina 32-3 in the first Test in Salta. Exhibiting the speed, agility and timing which has lit up the Aviva Premiership this season, the 22-year-old London Wasps man created tries for David Strettle, Billy Twelvetrees and Ben Morgan as the visitors surged into a 25-0 lead. On the back on a dominant performance from the pack, Gloucester Rugby pair Morgan and Twelvetrees made outstanding contributions, with fellow domestic teammate Freddie Burns augmenting an assured all-round display with five from six kicks attempted. While the hosts surged back in territory and possession terms in the second period, Stuart Lancaster will be delighted with the solidity and organisation of his defence, with replacement Billy Vunipola adding some gloss to the score line with a last-gasp try. Lancaster handed Test debuts to Wade and open-side flanker Kvesic, with three more – hooker ...

Ireland v England 6 Nations 2013: England player ratings Posted on Feb 11, 2013 15. Alex Goode: 7 Much better from Goode. Assured under the high ball and composed in his general play in what were horrific conditions for the backs. 14. Chris Ashton: 4 How has he survived this long without being able to tackle? Was shocking in defense, although thankfully the conditions dictated his missed tackles didn’t lead to anything. Anonymous in attack. 13. Brad Barritt: 6 More sterling defensive work from Barritt, in a game made for him. It was tight, all about making the hard yards and shackling the opposition on the gain-line – both of which he did well. 12. Billy Twelvetrees: 6 Not quite the fireworks of last week but a solid follow-up performance from the man known as 36. A couple of solid runs and a big kick were his only real contributions. 11. Mike Brown: 6 Once again top of the metres-made stats, Brown doesn’t tend to do anything that takes the breath away, but rather the basics very well. On a day like ...

Did I hear correct Billy Twelvetrees has been picked over Mr Manu Tuilagi??? Outrageous!!!
Billy Twelvetrees has been picked over Manu Tuilagi to play in the centres against Ireland -.- I know Twelvetrees had a good match last week and Tuilagi is only just back to fitness but would rather start Tuilagi and put Twelvetrees on the bench.
England should start with the returning centre Manu Tuilagi against Ireland this weekend - the midfield trio of Tuilagi, Owen Farrell and Billy Twelvetrees has the potential to be one of the best ever.
England announced their team for Sunday's game against Ireland at the Aviva Stadium this morning. There is no place for fit again Manu Tuilagi, with Billy Twelvetrees keeping his place after an impressive debut against Scotland last weekend. Tuilagi does the make the bench, meaning David Strettle drops out altogether. In the only other change, James Haskell replaces the injured Ben Morgan but plays at blind-side, with Tom Wood starting at 8. Full team: Goode; Ashton, Barritt, Twelvetrees, Brown; Farrell, B Youngs; Marler, T Youngs, Cole, Launchbury, Parling, Haskell, Robshaw, Wood. Replacements: Hartley, Wilson, Vunipola, Lawes, Waldrom, Care, Flood, Tuilagi.

England coach Stuart Lancaster has kept his midfield options open by including Manu Tuilagi, Brad Barritt and Billy Twelvetrees in his 25 man squad for Sunday's Six Nations match against Ireland. Mark Cavendish moved into the overall lead of the Tour of Qatar after sealing back to back sprint wins with a comfortable victory on stage 4.
Following the recent discovery of the excellently named (and excellent) Billy Twelvetrees (whose moniker makes him sound like a character in a Guy Ritchie gangster film - perhaps a pal of Frankie Four Fingers), and my stumbling across an actress named Claire Leatherbarrow, I should appreciate suggestions for my forthcoming book 'The 100 Silliest (Real) Names of All Times'. Other entries will include Rick Shaw (who was transport manager at the old Greater London Council!), Sean Lamb, Justin Edinburgh and Lily Pond. Really! GO!
