Remembering ERNIE K-DOE (born Ernest Kador on Feb. 22, 1936.) The New Orleans native had a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1961, "Mother-in-Law". K-Doe became the first Crescent City artist to top both black and white record charts. He recorded as a member of the group the Blue Diamonds in 1954 before making his first solo recordings but "Mother-in-Law", written by Allen Toussaint, was his only Top 40 hit. In the '80s, K-Doe was a DJ on several New Orleans radio stations and was known for his catch phrases "Burn, K-Doe, Burn!", "I'm a Charity Hospital Baby!", and (addressed to himself) "You just good, that's all!" K-Doe died of cancer at 65 in 2001 and, after a traditional jazz funeral, was interred in the 200-year-old Duval tomb in Saint Louis Cemetery in his native New Orleans.
Today Black history moment from the twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago: Leslie Charles Do you know who Leslie Charles is? Maybe you might know him better as Billy Ocean. Ocean was born as Leslie Charles in Fyzabad, Trinidad and Tobago, to Grenadian parents, and moved to Romford, Essex, England, with his family at the age of eight. Ocean's musical influence came at an early age of his life as his father was a musician, and Ocean realised he was in line to follow those ambitions as he was growing up. During his teenage years, he sang regularly in London clubs while also working as a tailor in London's Savile Row. He released his first single in 1972 on Spark Records as Les Charles. He was originally discovered by his first manager, John Morphew, who recorded a double A side single at Pye Studios in London with a full orchestra, However, the ballad singing style of Les was going out of fashion and Morphew was unable to get any major label to release it. It remains unissued. Les's father, who countersigned . ...

Band members Doug Ingle, Ron Bushy, Erik Braunn and Lee Dorman wrote the song. Bushy, the band's drummer, composed the lyrics for several other songs, including "Unconscious Power," which is on the Butterfly’s first album, "Heavy." He also wrote the lyrics for "In The Time Of Our Lives," from the "Ball" album. When we spoke with Ron for our 1999 book "Echoes of the Sixties," he told us "I wrote 'Pearly Gates' on the 'Scorching Beauty' album together with Jon Anderson from Yes while we were on tour in Europe in 1971. You can hear the Yes and Jon Anderson influence in it," observed Ron. "Soul Experience" reached No. 75 and remained on the chart for five weeks.

Hagar had released his Three Lock Box album in late 1982 and afterwards took a 3-month safari vacation in Africa. Schon and Hagar then began looking for other musicians to complete the band. In an interview from mid-1983, Schon talked about the band's formation: "Sammy and I just get along so well. We're already working on an album together, and it's a killer! Lady Sings the Blues is a 1972 American biographical drama film directed by Sidney J. Furie about jazz singer Billie Holiday loosely based on her 1956 autobiography which, in turn, took its title from one of Holiday's most popular songs. It was produced by Motown Productions for Paramount Pictures. Diana Ross portrayed Holiday, alongside a cast including Billy Dee Williams, Richard Pryor, James T. Callahan, and Scatman Crothers. Motown released a hugely successful soundtrack double-album of Ross' recordings of Billie Holiday songs from the film, also titled Lady Sings the Blues. The album went to Number One on the Billboard Hot 200 Album Charts, for the week-ending dates of April 7 and 14, 1973.
GEEK ALERT: I was a big fan of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart in the Casey Kasem days, but it's hard to make sense of it. For instance, when Mariah Carey first charted (in 1990), songs rolled out slowly, took at least 2 months to reach Number One, then rarely stayed at for more than 3 weeks. ("Vision of Love" spent 4 weeks at as I recall). Nowadays, songs DEBUT AT spend months there, then spend several months on the singles chart. It's not uncommon for singles to debut in the Top 3, spend 2 months at then spend 5 months decaying through the Top 100. The rollouts for singles have completely inverted since 2000.

Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, to an African-American working-class family. His father, Joseph Jackson, had been a guitarist but had put aside his musical aspirations to provide for his family as a crane operator. Believing his sons had talent, he molded them into a musical group in the early 1960s. At first, the Jackson Family performers consisted of Michael's older brothers, Tito, Jermaine and Jackie. Michael joined his siblings when he was 5 years old, and emerged as the group's lead vocalist. He showed remarkable range and depth for such a young performer, impressing audiences with his ability to convey complex emotions. Older brother Marlon also became a member of the group, which evolved into the Jackson 5. Behind the scenes, Joseph Jackson pushed his sons to succeed. He was also reportedly known to become violent with them. Michael and his brothers spent endless hours rehearsing and polishing up their act. At first, the Jackson 5 played local gigs and built a ...

Gaga recruited a variety of producers to help engineer Artpop, including Madeon, Zedd, and longtime collaborators RedOne and DJ White Shadow. It also features guest appearances from R. Kelly, T.I., Twista, and Too Short. Initially planned for release in early 2013, a hip injury Gaga sustained during the Born This Way Ball delayed the project for several months. This is bound to offend some of the purists out there, but it’s still newsworthy. Jimmy Page has released a mash-up of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Ramble On’ and the Notorious B.I.G.’s 1996 smash hit ‘Hypnotize.’ ‘Ramblize’ features the late hip-hop star rapping his hit on top of Page’s famous acoustic guitar part. Samples of Robert Plant’s vocals are used as accents, most notably the line, “Sometimes I grow so tired.” Page uploaded the track to the homepage of his website on Friday (Nov. 15) with the message “On this day Biggie Smalls,” even though Nov. 15 was neither Biggie’s birthday nor the anniversary of his death. It has since been replaced by something different, but can now be heard at Page’s Soundcloud page. ‘Hypnotize’ was from ‘Life After Death,’ the last album Notorious B.I.G. released in his lifetime. Based on a sample from Herb Alpert’s 1979 hit, ‘Rise,’ the song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 shortly after Biggie was killed on March 9, 1997. His murde ...

Miley Cyrus won a $10k toilet thanks to Wrecking Ball! Dr. Luke is a music producer who's worked with artists such as Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson and more. Dude knows his music. So, when Miley Cyrus played Wrecking Ball for him, he said it wouldn't be a hit. He told her he'd buy her the super-expensive Numi toilet if he was wrong. The song hit on the Billboard Hot 100, so he'll have to buy it. Said Miley "I'll be thinking of him every time I go." If you haven't heard of the Numi toilet, it's a ridiculously expensive line from Kohler that comes with a touch screen controller and can even stream music over bluetooth. (Source) Read more at

Once accused of breaking up 'The Beatles,' Yoko Ono has a new life as a granny and a pop star. In the warm and enticing article below, she talks to Nina Myskow of 'The Times' of London newspaper about old age — and John Lennon, among other topics. She is currently in Iceland to illuminate the 'Imagine Peace Tower' on the Icelandic island of Videy, paying tribute to her late husband, John Lennon. Ms. Ono seems to be wise and humanistic, even beyond her 80 years. Long and happily may she live! “I know you’re not supposed to show your legs at my age,” she says with a giggle. Then she shrugs and adds without a trace of self-pity: “I don’t know how long I’ve got, so I’m just going for it. I thought I better just do what I want to do.” Ono is certainly going for it, having recently topped the Billboard Hot 100 Dance Club Play charts, curated a hugely successful Meltdown festival on London’s Southbank and published Acorn, a new book of “enchanting exercises to open the eyes”. As for her . ...

October 13, 2013 To Whom It May Concern: In all honesty, I am so tired right now. I feel like there is so much more I need to add to this. There are so many people that deserve credit for their above average contributions to the world. There are people that make the world a better place just by being in it. Imagine a peace inside of every soul that surpasses all understanding. To love and be loved in the same manner that God loves. There have been so many before me that have strived and struggled to make the world a better place. Right here in America our very own Martin Luther King Jr., and Abraham Lincoln understood the concept of equality. God does not discriminate based on race, color, or social status. We are all God’s children, and He loves everyone. It is my hope that I have said all that I have needed to say. I am rather weary, and my thinking is a bit unclear at this moment. I am perfectly aware that what you are about to read may be difficult for one to follow. This is just how it ...

On this date, in 1967 during the Vietnam conflict, folk singer Joan Baez is arrested concerning a physical blockade of the U.S. Army's induction center in Oakland, California. This was the first of two highlights in Baez' attempt to pursue relevancy. The second was in 1971, when her song, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Following that, she slipped back into obscurity where she remains to this day.
Tammi Terrell (born Thomasina Winifred Montgomery; April 29, 1945 – March 16, 1970) was an American recording artist, best known as a star singer for Motown Records during the 1960s, most notably for a series of duets with singer Marvin Gaye. Terrell's career began as a teenager, first recording for Scepter/Wand Records, before spending nearly two years as a member of James Brown's Revue, recording for Brown's Try Me label. After a period attending college, Terrell recorded briefly for Checker Records, before signing with Motown in 1965. With Gaye, Terrell scored seven Top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By". Terrell's career was interrupted when she collapsed into Gaye's arms as the two performed at a concert at Hampden-Sydney College on October 14, 1967, with Terrell later being diagnosed with a brain tumor. She had eight unsuccessful operations before succumbing to the illness on March 16 ...

Avrill lavinge makes me throw up in the mouth a little. On her interviews she sounds like an *** When she first came out she was all "punk rock." and anti-Britney Spears, now she dyed her hair blond and wears pink all the time like she's a pop princess. Her music is so crappy. Have you heard that god awful song called "Alice." that she released this year? It sounds like all her other previous songs she released before - alot of obnoxious annoying noise that makes no cohensive sense at all. No wonder the Alice in Wonderland didn't sell so well. The song didn't even make the Billboard Hot 100 lol. Something about Avril just screams *** " She's very UGLY and not attractive at all. She also seems and looks like a crazy. Like if you had to picture a female serial killer, her face would come across your mind lol.
