I am honored to be nominated for Best Contemporary Blues Female again this year, by the National The Blues Foundation . Its unlikely I will win, but being acknowledged for my hard work feels good. This is my 7th nomination. You may join the club for as little as $25 and become a voting member. Your money goes to help blues musicians around the world and helps them keep the blues alive. I am honored to even be called a "blues singer" as I feel it is a compliment of the highest order. Koko Taylor was a blues singer - Big Maybelle, Big Mama Thornton and Etta James. I am humbled to be in any category where their names have been honored. I am only carrying the torch for brave women who paved the way. I owe this nomination to Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie, Nina Simone and so many more who made it possible for a white girl from the ghetto to sing blues. Thank you blues foundation and thank you all for the sweet compliments. www.blues.org Please join and VOTE!

Closing thoughts on 2013 TD Jazz Festival.. Can you say big fun! Times are difficult all around and planning a festival is no exception. Rarely do people agree on who should be presented. The grand daddy of all jazz festivals – Newport in 1958 featured gospel- Mahalia Jackson, blues – Big Maybelle – rock & roll - Chuck Berry amongst a stellar line-up of living great jazz artists. Going back twenty years I’m interviewing former Downbeat Magazine editor Gee Lees at photographer John Reeves home and conversation rose concerning the passing of so many icons and how that bodes for the future of jazz. Lees spoke nostalgically - reminiscing, one time there were 500 icons and then only 50 – and asked who would come to see jazz performers once the last great died. Prophetic? Reviewing 2013 TD Jazz and coming Beaches International Jazz Festival it can be honestly stated both are now music festivals with broader appeal whose survival depends on reaching that middle ground -who remember the greats, celebrat ...

Mickey Baker MacHouston Baker was an American guitarist who is widely held to be a critical force in the bridging of rhythm and blues and rock and roll, (along with Bo Diddley, Ike Turner, and Chuck Berry). While Baker worked with and recorded with several artists throughout his career, his best work was considered his duo Mickey & Sylvia, which was inspired by Les Paul & Mary Ford. His guitar riffs were considered to be more bold and piercing than almost anything in the late 50's. The duo's hit "Love is Strange" featured his famous, bluesy guitar riffs. Throughout his career Baker also worked with The Drifters, Ray Charles, Ivory Joe Hunter, Big , Louis Jordan, Coleman Hawkins, Joe Turner, Ruth Brown, Big Maybelle, and Ike & Tina Turner.

Bay Street Theatre was buzzing on Saturday night, opening night of Big Maybelle. As the six piece band took the stage, a hush fell over the crowd, and the filmstrip projected on the back wall set the scene: an image of a person picking cotton flashed on as an old spiritual rang out slow and steady. ...
Like the blues itself, “Big Maybelle: Soul of the Blues,” through Sept. 2 at the Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, is a terrible beauty. Born out of the horror of slavery and the ongoing march to overcome its far-reaching legacy, blues music gives voice to the dichotomies of uplift and anguish, h...
Just found out last night that the woman sitting right in front of me, Barry Manilow's theater companion at "Big Maybelle" on Friday night at Bay Street, was none other than Lorna Luft. Holy geez--Judy Garland's daughter!!! For those who don't know this (although it's almost impossible to have met me and not know), my first taste of the love of theater came when I was chosen to play Dorothy in my high school version of "The Wizard of Oz" a million and two years ago.
