People Was electing the Criminals by voting lotus who lead this party is criminal & criminals showing the big big & biggest dreams, 165 of Maharashtra's 288 new lawmakers have criminal cases Mumbai: A whopping 165 of the 288 newly-elected legislators in Maharashtra have criminal cases against them, with 115 charged with serious offences of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crimes against women and communal disharmony, a watchdog said on Tuesday. Among them, 51 (31 percent) already have charges framed against them in various courts of law, said a study by the Maharashtra Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (MEW-ADR). Three legislators, including two from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and one from Shiv Sena have murder cases lodged, while 15, including five from the BJP, seven from the Shiv Sena, two from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and an Independent, have cases of attempt to murder against them. Mumbai, Oct 21: As both Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) eagerly await Bharatiya Janata Party's invitation to form a government in Maharashtra, reports on Tuesday claimed that the BJP is likely to take support of 12 Independents. Reports came after Home Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP general secretary JP Nadda postponed their Maharashtra visit after Diwali. Both the BJP leaders were scheduled to go to Maharashtra today to discuss the issue of government formation. The BJP held hectic consultations on Monday in this regard with party leaders weighing various factors to decide on the Chief Ministerial candidates. The BJP has many reasons to give its erstwhile ally a snub, as Shiv Sena had viciously targetted Prime Minister Narendra Modi during poll campaign. As far as NCP is concerned, BJP is most unlikely to take risk in allying with the Sharad Pawar-led party. During the election campaign, PM Modi had described NCP as the "Naturally Corrupt Party" and urged voters to reject it. Also, with De ...

BJP - Sena set to Form Maharastra Govt, is Nitin Gadkari the CM?! Sena gives in, set to join govt A day after election results were announced, a reunion of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena appeared possible with the regional party publicly expressing its willingness to join the government without any conditions. BJP also sought to know from Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, a senior Maharashtra leader, if he was interested in becoming the Chief Minister. Gadkari has officially denied several times in the past that he was aspiring for the top post. He has not communicated his mind to the top leadership so far and many Chief Ministerial hopefuls are also pushing him to lead the state government. Devendra Fadnavis, who like Gadkari is from Nagpur, is being considered a front-runner for the Chief Minister’s post, given the backing he has from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The many flip-flops by NCP chief Sharad Pawar: Former Union Minister and Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar is not new to flip-flops in his long political career and has once again lived up to his reputation by offering to support the Bharatiya Janata Party soon after the Maharashtra assembly polls results on Sunday. Pawar showed what he was capable of when he exited the Vasantdada Patil government to form his own in 1978. This he did after Patil asked him in the lobby of the Vidhan Bhavan if he was still in his government. Pawar sought support from the Left leaning parties and became the youngest Chief Minister in Maharashtra. Later, he rejoined Congress, only to quit again, claiming he was being sidelined in the party. Inexplicably, Pawar came back to the Congress fold accepting Rajiv Gandhi’s leadership in 1987. Pawar stayed put in the Congress till 1999 after which he suddenly raised Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s foreign origins. Pawar was expelled from Congress for the crime, and he fo ...
BJP to govern Maharashtra, looks for Haryana CM (Roundup) By Quaid Najmi and Jaideep Sarin The BJP declared Sunday it will take power both in Maharashtra, where it finished the single largest group in a hung assembly, and Haryana, where it was poised to get a majority on its own. The Congress was humiliated in both places. For the first time, the Bharatiya Janata Party had a clear mandate in Haryana but the party was poised to win only 119 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra assembly, falling well short of the 145 seats required for a simple majority. But with the NCP offering unexpected "outside support" to it, leaving the runner up Shiv Sena high and dry, BJP president Amit Shah said in New Delhi that his party would "form the next government" in the state. The NCP decision to give outside support could reduce the BJP's need to lean on its estranged and long-time ally Shiv Sena, which it dumped before the bitterly contested Oct 15 polls. Nationalist Congress Party leader Praful Patel said Maharashtra ne ...
Congress-mukt Bharat? India's grand old party is struggling For the Congress, which has ruled India for more than 50 of its 67 years since Independence, the latest defeats in Maharashtra and Haryana will again force another bout of soul-searching. India's grand old party, surely, has lot to soul-search about lately. Nationally, it has been reduced to 44 seats in the Lok Sabha. Now, it is fast losing control over states as well. The party is now in power in only 11 of India's 29 states, two of them in alliance with regional parties. The party is now in the saddle only in Karnataka, Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir. What's more, there are worrying signs in Jammu and Kashmir, where it has parted ways with ally National Conference for the next assembly elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has made "Congress-mukt Bharat" (Congress-free India) one of its political battle cries, i ...
Congress leaders concede defeat in Maharashtra, Haryana assembly polls: As early trends predicted a defeat for the Congress Party in Maharashtra and Haryana assembly elections, party leaders have reportedly accepted the inevitable, and are now pitching for improvement in the future. "Early trends have made it clear that results are not on the lines we expected. There is an anti-incumbency factor, but we have performed better than we did in the Lok Sabha polls," said Congress leader Rajiv Shukla. Shukla, however, continued to maintain that there was no Modi wave in the two states or across the country and opined that the Bharatiya Janata Party's performance has lowered down in comparison to its performance in the May 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He also said that the ruling party's popularity and influence has also decreased. The president of the Congress Party's Haryana unit, Ashok Tanwar, said, "We accept the public's mandate with respect and modesty, we will introspect." Maharashtra Congress unit president ...
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the 'Swachh Bharat' mission on Thursday aimed at creating a 'clean India' in the next five years. Modi would symbolically wield a broom on October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, and reach out to all Indians to make cleanliness a mass movement. Preparations are being made in government offices and also by the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in Delhi for large participation in "cleanliness oath" to be taken on Thursday.
RSS rapped BJP for breaking alliance: Shiv Sena New Delhi, September 30: The RSS has criticised the state BJP for snapping the 25-year-old partnership with it last week, the Shiv Sena said in its party mouthpiece on Tuesday. In a front-page revelation in 'Saamana', the Shiv Sena has said that three days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) broke the alliance, a secret meeting was held in south Mumbai. That evening September 28, the BJP leaders sought the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) guidance on how to approach the electorate under the changed political scenario in Maharashtra where all the five major parties are now contesting independently. "Did you consult us before breaking the alliance? Why is BJP running away form Hindutva? Or did you break it because of your selfish interests... This has created divisions among Hindus...," the Sena quoted RSS leaders as saying at the closed-door meeting. "You are only bothered about your chair... With what face are you going to approach the electorate and see ...

Really liked theses lines: Both the "Newly-Divorced" alliances are keeping options open - the BJP saying that friendship with Sena will continue forever, and the NCP hoping that the next government will also be formed by secular forces - for a post-poll re-marriage. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) called off its 15-year-old alliance with the Congress in the state, hours after the Bharatiya Janata Party snapped off its 25-year-old tie with Shiv Sena. The NCP also quit the Congress-led Democratic Front government, reducing it to a minority in the 288-member assembly and raising the possibility of the state coming under central rule - barely three weeks before the poll.

Resolving the Absurd Indo-Bangladesh Border Complexities The Modi government is making a push to settle India’s long-running border disputes with Bangladesh. For decades, India has tried to curb illegal immigration and smuggling along its 4,000 kilometer border with Bangladesh. It has installed thousands of kilometers of barbed wire and floodlights, and its Border Security Force (BSF) even adopted a controversial “shoot-on-sight” policy to deter those who might cross illegally. In 2001, the dispute acquired a new dimension when incursions by the border guards of both countries culminated in the first armed conflict between India and Bangladesh. This skirmish resulted in the deaths of three members of the Border Guards Bangladesh and sixteen members of the Indian BSF. Despite these clashes, the significance of the Bangladesh-India border is too often underestimated. Among India’s priorities are improving access to its underdeveloped and volatile northeastern states, reaching advantageous water shar ...

This man will help Modi govt to transform Indian businesses Adil Zainulbhai may have retired as the chairman of McKinsey India in 2012 but his life seems to be only gathering pace. For starters, the Mumbai resident stayed on at the firm as a senior advisor. Since 2013, he has steadily found a place on the boards of several important companies: conglomerate Reliance Industries, drug maker Cipla, media powerhouse Network18 and engineering giant Larsen & Toubro. Roles as advisor or director at various not-for-profit trusts keep him on his toes. And most recently, the consultant became the first name from the corporate world to be officially roped in by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help his government. The announcement came a day after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party suffered electoral reverses in some states as the blatantly communal campaign of some of its leaders badly boomeranged. The political message was not lost on people: the first technocrat appointed by Prime Minister Modi was a Muslim. As chai ...

And, on related matters of generational change, to Kavita Chowdhury. Edited excerpts: Is Digvijaya Singh now holding back his punches, after a circular was issued by organisation in-charge Janardan Dwivedi to rein in outspoken party leaders? My punches are always against the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and against religious fundamentalists. Never against anyone in the party. Lucknow: Ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party raised the issue of 'love jihad' (affairs involving Muslim boys and Hindu girls) in Uttar Pradesh, the controversy has refused to die down with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday taking a jibe at Mathura MP Hema Malini saying she never had qualms about acting in movies which showed such relationships. Replying to queries on issue of "love jihad" raised by BJP in its Uttar Pradesh executive meet, Akhilesh said, “You hear the song of BJP MP's film 'Dharmatma'. Will it promote love or not." The Chief Minister was referring to actor-turned politician and Mathura MP Hema Malini's 1975 movie which also starred Feroz Khan. The film showed the son of a Hindu gang-lord falling in love with a Muslim girl played by Hema. The lyrics of the song that UP CM referred to go on the lines of - “Jab se tujhko dekha hai, dekh ke khuda ko maana hai. Will Modi conduct India’s namkaran?-Prof Kancha Ilaiah article in,Asian age 22 Aug 2014 " If Sangh Parivar forces keep baying for cultural nationalist agendas, Narendra Modi will become helpless… he will not be able to stop these culture-vultures and his corporate development agenda will undergo a change" There is a slow but systematic attempt to change India’s name from Bharat to Hindustan — playing up the word “Hindu” in Hindustan and trying to repackage it as the abode of the Hindus. B.R. Ambedkar and his team that drafted the Constitution of India consciously avoided the term “Hindustan” as they could foresee its implications in a land that takes pride in its diversity. Shortly after the Bharatiya Janata Party toppled the power equations in Delhi and Narendra Modi took over as Prime Minister, a Shiv Sena MP, Prataprao Jadhav, remarked in the Lok Sabha that a saffron flag should be hoisted atop the historic Red Fort as “Hindustan” belongs to Hindus. His lone argument was that Hindu- ...

It is 18 years since Justice J.S. Verma delivered his flawed judgment on Hindutva, but no Chief Justice of India has thought it fit to constitute a larger Bench to settle the issue authoritatively. By A. G. NOORANI  Justice J.S. That was a lie. Repeated ad nauseum, it spread. “The Hindutva judgment” was delivered by Justice J.S. Verma on behalf of himself and Justices N.P. Singh and K. Venkatasami on December 11, 1995 (Dr Ramesh Prabhoo vs Prabhakar K. Kunte [1996] 1 Supreme Court Cases 130; Manohar Joshi’s case is on page 169).   This Bench had studiously ignored an earlier ruling by the Supreme Court to the contrary ...
School textbook in Bengal describes revolutionaries as 'terrorists' KOLKATA: A school textbook in West Bengal that describes several revolutionaries as 'terrorists' has kicked up a controversy. Historians, politicians and descendants of nationalist leaders have expressed their shock and dismay at the book issued by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. It has a chapter titled 'Revolutionary Terrorism' which describes the endeavours of freedom fighters as 'santrasbaad' or 'terrorism'. The chapter deals with the acts of freedom fighters like Khudiram Bose, Prafulla Chaki and others. Calling it an insult, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose called for the removal of the people responsible for introducing the chapter. " There is a need to find if it is mere ignorance or deliberate. If it's ignorance, then it signifies that the right people are not in charge, but if it's deliberate, then it is far more serious. People must come out in protest against this,'' he said. The sancti ...

ToI says : Beef exporter confidence returns in India . New Delhi: When Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked India's huge beef exports while campaigning to be premier, producers feared bad times ahead for the industry in the land where cows are sacred. But now the beef export industry, the world's second-biggest after Brazil, is feeling more confident amid surging demand worldwide and absence of any hostile moves since Modi took office in May. ^ . "I'm still a bit suspicious about Modi but I'm not really worried about my job," said abbatoir worker MD Sanwaj, 30, who spends eight-hour shifts at a slaughter-house in Ghazipur on the outskirts of New Delhi. The industry draws heart from the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) previous stint in power, which ended in 2004, when the Hindu nationalists left the beef export sector alone, business players said. . Beef exporters had some anxious moments in the build-up to May's elections, when Modi accused the then-Congress government of staging a " pink revolution" — ...
TOKYO -- The new government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 63, and his Bharatiya Janata Party has gotten off to a reasonably good start. With the unveiling of the fiscal 2014 draft budget on July 10, the government's work to put the economy back to a rapid growth track went into full swing. Now, with the help of powerful aides, Modi is tackling a laundry list of other tough issues, a task made all the more urgent by rising oil prices, a weakening rupee and below-average monsoon rainfall.

Bail by Gujarat HC to Ex minister Maya Kodnani, sentenced to 28 years' imprisonment in the 2002 Naroda Paitya riots case in which 97 people were killed. Division bench of high court comprising Justice V M Sahai and Justice R P Dholaria, accepted Kodnani's application seeking bail on health grounds. With this, she becomes the first accused to get bail in the Naroda Patiya riots case. Court has given her regular bail on the bond of Rs 1 lakh and has exempted her from appearing before the police during her bail period as she is not keeping well. Kodnani in her bail application had said that she has been suffering from tuberculosis and depression, for which she is getting treatment at city civil hospital. She has been lodged in the Sabarmati jail. Kodnani had also submitted in the bail plea that her appeal challenging the judgment of special court is pending before the Gujarat high court since December 2012. The appeal is not likely to be heard in near future, and considering this she should be released on ba ...
AAP and BJP in an 'auto' war: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is probably the only political party in the world that has an ‘auto cell’, the ‘auto’ representing the 100,000-plus autorickshaw drivers who eke out a living driving autorickshaws, a solid chunk of votes if they vote en masse for any one party. In the last Delhi Assembly elections, the majority of autorickshaw drivers voted for AAP, and the party romped home in many seats, catapulting Arvind Kejriwal into the CM’s chair. Then, Kejriwal & co quit and AAP delivered a dud in all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi. Right now, autorickshaw drivers are divided between AAP and BJP though the count will still go in favour of AAP. With another round of Delhi elections slated, AAP and BJP are fighting an ‘auto-war’. Both parties are out to prove who serves the interests of autorickshaw drivers more. The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), BJP’s trade union arm, called for a day-long auto-strike on Monday. Drivers aligned with AAP were forced to fall in ...

Kul Bhushan Kain Written by: Mr. Kul Bhushan Kain, Director Principal at Credence High School, Dubai. "When Indira Gandhi, India’s Prime Minister, declared a state of emergency on June 25, 1975, she immediately imposed strict censorship of the press. With defiant exceptions, much of the press caved in quickly to the new rules, prompting L.K. Advani, one of the founders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who was jailed during the emergency, to comment later: “You were merely asked to bend, but you chose to crawl.” Press censorship seems to be back with a vengeance in India, this time imposed not by direct government fiat but by powerful private owners and politicians. First, there were the phone calls recorded by tax investigators in 2009 between Niira Radia, a lobbyist for some of India’s most powerful corporations, and members of the media elite that revealed a dismayingly cozy relationship between the two. Last year, the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Information Technology issued its report o ...

Via Baba Umar India's opposition parties walked out of the upper house of parliament last week after the government refused to pass a resolution condemning Israel for its invasion of the Gaza Strip. The government, led by nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), came in for criticism for acting as a "spectator" even as hundreds of Palestinians are being killed in Israeli air, naval, and ground attacks. But Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said that India's policy on Palestine was a legacy of the past governments. "There is absolutely no change in India's policy towards Palestine, which is that we fully support the Palestinian cause while maintaining good relations with Israel," the minister said. The foreign minister has said that India has diplomatic ties with both nations and "any discourteous reference can impact our relations with them". Instead, the government has backed the Egyptian ceasefire offer. C Uday Bhaskar, a foreign policy expert, said India was "seeking to find a balance between Isra ...

Kolkata: Assailing the Narendra Modi government for hiking fuel prices and railway fares, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday said her party Trinamool Congress would carry on with its movement to combat such policies. "They said something before the elections and have done things diametrically opposite after the polls. Within a month of coming to power, they have hiked prices of fuel and railway fares," Banerjee said. "We will continue our democratic movements and fight against these things," the Trinamool supremo said at a party rally here. Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of trying to "foment riots" in West Bengal, she warned that there was no place for divisive politics in her state. "They are trying to indulge in communal politics in the state. We will not let this happen. There is no room for communalism on the soil of Bengal," she said. Wondering how the BJP could indulge in a massive campaign built on "lies" in the state by winning only one additional seat in the recent Lok Sabha p ...

Will there be any shift in India’s policy towards Bangladesh under Modi rule? With the change of regime now, the big question is whether New Delhi would make any shift in Indian foreign policy towards its next-door neighbour Bangladesh. So far, the reactions from political parties and analysts have followed two diametrically opposite lines. Dr.Asaduzzaman Ripon analyses the future relationship between Bangladesh and India, giving insights and making suggestions for improvement. A flurry of discussions has taken place in Bangladesh on the future Indo-Bangladesh relations centering India’s new external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj’s recent visit to Bangladesh. The victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its leader Narendra Modi in the Indian elections has given birth to such speculations. Because, the party in the state power of Bangladesh has already been controversial for its clinging to power through a farcical election where majority parties including the main contender for power boycott ...
Listening to 4 icons of these challenging times – Ang San Sue Kyi, Kuldeep Nayar, Chunibhai Vaidya and Arvind Kejriwal It has been a period of serious introspection and interactions since 16th May when India was old that the elections for Lok Sabha – 2014 have resulted into a clear madate in favour of Shri Narendra Modi led Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies. Most of them have taken place in New Delhi. Some of them were initiated by me in North –east Delhi Lok Sabha parliamentary constituency which gave me Four Lakh and Fifty two thousand votes and made the eminent congress candidate loose his deposit. It is another matter that this did not alter the fact that it was not sufficient to get elected as a Bollywood Bhojpuri film star got Five Lakh Ninety Thousand votes as successful BJP candidate. There have been three workshop at JNU by Chatra Yuva Sanghrsh Samiti about it. Bharatiya Janata Party’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was in all praises for Telugu superstar turned politician Pawan Kalyan. Sharing the stage with him at a rally in Nizamabad, Modi said, “As long as there are people like Pawan, the Telugu spirit will never die.” He said development should take place in both Telangana and Seemandhra and Telugu spirit should be protected. Interestingly, he made no mention of Chandrababu Naidu or his Telugu Desam Party, BJP’s alliance partner in Andhra Pradesh. Pawan Kalyan recently launched a political party -- Jan Sena -- but has not allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Modi also raked up several issues right from the Telangana struggle to the Congress’s insult to P V Narasimha Rao in the first of his four rallie

It's an incredible win, but victors must show humility 'They must bow their head before the people's might and start their work immediately. Now nothing can help them, but a show of sincerity and a life without cosmetic frills.' 'They don't have any option, but to succeed and prove themselves worthy of this massive victory,' says BJP MP Tarun Vijay. It's 1857 again. It is difficult for us, born and brought up in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, to describe how we feel today. Should the word like 'Indescribable' be used? Looks too modest. 'Unprecedented' and 'Extraordinary' too pale away before the results. Those of us, who had to live like outcasts, unlisted citizens, barred to enter the holy precincts of secular citadels of intellectual discourse, awards, celebrations, fellowships, will take some time to adjust to the new realities. Our parents worked for the Jan Sangh and then the Bharatiya Janata Party. The area we lived was full of Congress people, and we faced a lot of resistance. We were told; we ar ...

Beijing: Prime Minister Narendra Modi may still not have unveiled his foreign policy but he may follow his predecessor Manmohan Singh’s diplomatic initiatives, official media of China said on Monday. “After being sworn into office, India’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shared little about his foreign policy platform with the outside world. This generates increasing interest and speculation,” state-run Global Times said. India’s foreign policy has tremendous historical burdens. Modi’s agenda will depend on how he perceives his predecessors’ achievements and what vision he himself has for India, it said. In 2003, it was Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) premier who picked up and carried forward a rapprochement policy with Pakistan—a platform started by his predecessor P.V. Narasimha Rao and interrupted by the Kargil crisis in 1999 and the terrorist attack on the Indian parliament in 2001, the Global Times said. Singh inherited Vajpayee’s Pakistan policy. He insist ...

Emerging India-Pakistan Equations = Dr. Abdul Ruff Colachal - 5/31/2014 Decomposed in real terms owing mainly to mutual suspicion, hatred and resultant tensions, Indo-Pakistani relations have been in a low key since these two nations came into existence in 1947 for various reasons, both real and fictitious, including the Kashmir *** nuke flashpoint. World is watching very carefully how the newly emerged Modi government would handle the usual Hindutva and other confrontational issues – both at domestic and foreign stages- that made the party popular among fanatic Hindus. Kashmir has stayed as the major flashpoint in Indo-Pakistani relations, constantly hindering any progress in the normal bilateral ties. With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) forming a majority government in India under the leadership of Narendra Modi, questions are being raised about the implications for Kashmir and India–Pakistan relations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems to address the issues of Kashmir and Indo-Pakistan re ...

The LoC has witnessed four major ceasefire violations since the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power at the Centre. Modi's Bhutan visit first step to reassert regional sway Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins on Sunday his first visit abroad since taking office, arriving in Bhutan to launch a drive to reassert Indian influence in the region, offering financial and technical help and the lure of a huge market. The tiny Buddhist nation, wedged in the Himalayas between India and China, is the closest India has to an ally in South Asia, a region of bristling rivalry where China is making inroads. While India has been struggling recently with policy paralysis and a slowing economy, China has been building ports in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and in its "all-weather ally" Pakistan. China overtook India as the biggest foreign investor in Nepal in the first six months of this year. A minister from the ruling party of the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has said rapes happen "accidentally", amid renewed outrage over attacks against women. In the latest controversial remarks by a politician, Ramsevak Paikra, the home minister of central Chhattisgarh state, who is responsible for law and order, said on Saturday that rapes did not happen on purpose. "Such incidents [rapes] do not happen deliberately. These kind of incidents happen accidentally," Paikra, of the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP), which also rules at the national level, told reporters. Paikra, who had been asked for his thoughts on the gang-rape and hanging of two girls in a neighbouring state, later said he had been misquoted. His original remarks were broadcast on television networks. The remarks come just days after Babulal Gaur, the home minister of the BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh state, said about rape: "Sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong". Gaur made the remarks on Thursday amid growing anger over the gang-rape ...

The students - from V.N.R. Vignan Jyothi Engineering College - were on an excursion and were getting themselves photographed on the banks of the river when they were reportedly washed away as the flow in the river suddenly increased, Mandi Deputy Commissioner Devesh Kumar told IANS. A rescue operation was on but no body had yet been fished out. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. "Suddenly, the water level of the river increased reportedly due to water being released from the Larji hydro project," said a police official. He said the students were swept away in the swollen river. Official sources said the Beas river was in spate ...
NRIs who cannot travel all the way to their polling booth in India on election day are disbarred from exercising their franchise. Sonia Sarkar examines why online voting for non-residents is yet to come into force Mohua Sarkar Guin from Beadon Street, Calcutta, has been working at a government agency in Singapore for the past two years. Even though she is far away from her homeland, she wants to have her say in this year’s general elections. “Casting my vote for the party I like or perhaps pressing the NOTA (none of the above) button is doing my bit to make my country a better place,” says Guin, a registered voter of Calcutta North West constituency. But this year, she had to give voting a miss because the Supreme Court recently said that non-resident Indian (NRI) registered voters cannot vote from their overseas location, at least, not in this parliamentary polls. It upheld the Election Commission’s argument that allowing NRIs to vote from their overseas locations would lead to statutory and logi ...
Lack of Uniform/Common Civil Code is one of the prime reasons behind exploitation of women from a certain community, irrespective of their social status. While the majority community has welcomed an era of liberty for its women, members of a particular community still follow age old conservative laws that lead to treating of woman simply as an object that has to please her man, produce a dozen children and carry out household chores for the rest of her so called life. If every community adopts Uniform Civil Code, like Hindus have already, then women will have much more rights than now. Because then they wont have to follow ridiculous laws which curtail their freedom. Also, there will be no Polygamy, no marriage before 18 years for girls, no divorce by simply saying 'talaaq' 3 times, no fatwas and above all - woman will have equal standing as men. Article 44 of the Indian Constitution enshrines the directive principle that the state shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform Civil Code throughout ...
The INL had demanded inclusion in the LDF as a constituent. Forward Bloc, which has been working to strengthen Left unity at the national level, too had held discussions with the LDF and put forward certain demands. The LDF State committee did discuss the INL’s demand along with those of the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) and Janadhipathya Samrakshana Samiti (JSS) and decided that the alliance should request these parties to cooperate with the LDF for the time being and discuss other issues later. The INL should give up its decision to contest the polls on its own seeing that the LDF’s victory in Kerala was necessary to keep both the BJP and the Congress out of power at the Centre. In this context, the JSS decision to leave the UDF and work for LDF’s victory was a positive development, which was a major blow to the UDF. The move would also help in political polarisation in the State. Forward Bloc’s case The Forward Bloc too had decided to contest in some seats. However, they have now decided not to ...
It has caused a crisis of lack of governance among others a sign of misrule by the government by the deafening silence of the BJP’s cosy attempts to remain mute for a long period of time over the inflammatory utterances of marcho men of BJP and other parties who seem to have come out of the woodwork of the dark ages which has no place in modern society and United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) (2008). The women of this country can’t put up with this passive fortitude any more as their efforts at bringing to book the ministers involved by the silence. “Rape is cool” sentiments expressed by several politicians listed below are unbelievable in a country which is proud to call itself the champion of rights of womanhood. This is cause for concern given Shri Narendra Modi had said during his inauguration speech that he was going to look after the poor that were the promise. The question in the minds of the victims is, are the spoken words a fac ...
INDIA: Narendra Modi TO THE RESCUE? I followed keenly India's general elections for the first time in my life. Prior to this time, I simply waited for the emergence of the Prime Minister following elections there. It was my hope that the Congress party led by the Ghandi scion won't win. I, like many Indians I know or followed couldn't bear another tenure of their brazen corruption which was stinking to high heavens. At some point, each new week was heralded with another shameful act of members of that family or cronies, with so much impunity while everyone including security agents and police simply looked on. Some people moderated their criticism, so they won't be accused of racism seeing that the head of the party at some point was Rajiv Ghandi's Italian-born widow Sonia, before her son tookover. Most analysts assert that it was more of a rejection of the policies of the Congress Party than it was a win for Narendra Modi's BHARATIYA JANATA PARTY, BJP. I felt he would've given the ruling party a run for ...

Chinese Foreign minister Wang Yi signals new effervescence in bilateral ties with India: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's warmth and business-like approach towards China was reciprocated here on Sunday by its visiting foreign minister Wang Yi. Yi described Modi "a great friend of China" who has visited their country as Gujarat Chief Minister. In the first high-level interaction with the new dispensation, Wang and his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj agreed to permit Chinese investments in India in various sectors by setting up industrial zones and parks. Analysts believe while former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had found a special place in Washington for his scholarship and an easy attitude, Beijing seems to have discovered their match in Modi, who, they believe, is systemic and methodical like them. Wang said the new government has injected vitality into an ancient civilization and his country was ready to engage with the Modi dispensation. Another feather in Modi's Chinese cap could be the incorporation ...

BIASED STATE LAWS ENFORCED BY BJP IN GUJARAT GIVE A PEEP INTO POSSIBLE BIASED FEDERAL LAWS! Copy pasting excerpts from an article by Shoaib Daniyal on Bharatiya Janata Party's resounding win in the Lok Sabha elections has brought one of its pet issues back into focus: the establishment of a Uniform Civil Code to replace the current system by which followers of different faiths are subject to religious personal laws relating to marriage, inheritance and other matters. It is rarely acknowledged but there are a number of provisions in India that work on explicitly religious or communal principles, all of which are also in urgent need of reform. On these the BJP has maintained a studied silence, in some cases even propagating them. The notable provisions are listed below: Gujarat's apostasy law: It might come as a surprise that India has an apostasy law, but in 2003, a time of great communal polarisation, the Gujarat legislature passed the Freedom of Religion Act, a wonderfully Orwellian name for a law that r ...

Now for the hard part: India’s infrastructure challenge Within an hour of landing in most Indian cities, visitors see what is holding back Asia’s third largest economy. They get a taste of the packed and potholed roads, and in some cities they might see an empty construction site that promises a new metro. The business community has great faith in Narendra Modi, India’s new Prime Minister, and his ability to improve infrastructure thanks to his track record as Chief Minister of the state of Gujarat. But the question is: will Modi be able to improve infrastructure as quickly and efficiently at the national level? After years of underinvestment, infrastructure – from transport to power – is undoubtedly a big problem in India. And as the population grows, the pressure is rising rapidly. Elected on the promise of restarting India’s beleaguered economy, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) manifesto involves everything from setting up gas grids and building 100 new cities, to speeding up work on freigh ...
Extreme rightists welcoming extreme rightists! Ashraf Siddiquee Bitu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had a landslide victory in their favour in the last Lok Shova (Parliament) election in India and Narendra Damodar Das Modi has become the Prime Minister with absolute majority. He took oath at 26 May after postponing the pre-scheduled date on 21st May as a token of respect to former Indian PM Rajib Gandhi’s death anniversary. As a Bangladeshi citizen and young political activist, I congratulate the winner and look for coming days of acceleration of democratic cooperation between Bangladesh and India. India is our trusted friend and our neighboring powerful country. Thus, the change in state power may have an impact on our politics. Political Parties greeted Narendra Modi for his triumph in the election; it’s a courtesy which will bolster the democratic practices. However, the political parties, democratic organizations, eminent citizens and significant stakeholders showed much eagerness on indian politica ...
Nothing puts to test the strength of India’s secular, social fabric as a hate crime does. The horrific murder of Mohsin Shaikh, an IT professional in Pune, by a group of youngsters owing allegiance to the Hindu Rashtra Sena, is a reminder of how a post-election feeling of triumphalism can feed a climate of lawlessness among the fanatic fringe elements of Hindutva groups. Shaikh gave no cause for provocation, but was targeted merely because he was a Muslim. The attack followed rumours that a Shivaji statue was stoned, and came in the context of rising communal tensions after the circulation in the social media of morphed pictures of Shivaji, and Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. Clearly, the Hindutva elements were looking for a prey, and Shaikh happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hate crimes have a way of spreading and multiplying in the absence of speedy intervention by the state. The onus is therefore on those in power to act swiftly against such attacks and erase the impression that th ...

Tulu Rajya: The Tulu Nadu state movement is aimed at increasing Tulu Nadu's influence and political power through the formation of a separate Tulu Nadu state from Karnataka. Tulu Nadu is a region on the south-western coast of India. It consists of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka, and the northern parts of the Kasargod district up to the Chandragiri river in Kerala. The Chandragiri river is traditionally considered to be a boundary between Tulu Nadu and Kerala. The first call for Tulu Nadu was made just after the Quit India Movement in 1942 by Srinivas Updhyaya Paniyadi, a banker and a press owner from Udupi. Mangalore is the largest and the chief city of Tulu Nadu. Tulu activists have been demanding a separate Tulu Nadu state since the 1990s, considering language and culture as the basis for their del. Tulu Nadu was ruled by several major powers, including the Kadambas, Alupas, Vijayanagara dynasty, and the Keladi Nayakas. The region was unified with the state of Mysore (now called K ...
Media is recreating The Anarchist agian.didn't learn lesson yet !! Talking to reporters at the end of the AAP's three-day national executive meet, party chief Arvind Kejriwal also downplayed the controversy over Yogendra Yadav's e-mail questioning internal democracy in the 19-month-old organisation, saying "issues crop up in a new family". Kejriwal, who contested against Narendra Modi in Varanasi and repeatedly attacked him during the election campaign, congratulated him for being elected as the new Prime Minister. Notwithstanding the AAP's showing in the polls — it won just four of the 430 seats in which it fielded candidates, Kejriwal said, "Our party won 1 crore 13 lakh votes in an election centered around a person (read Modi)… This shows people have huge expectations for the future from our party." Faced with criticism over its future and desertions of top leaders such as Shazia Ilmi, the former Delhi Chief Minister added the party will launch Mission Vistaar (expansion) to strengthen the party's ...

Why freedom is a war-cry in Kashmir : By Syed Zafar Mehdi Speaking Freely is an Asia Times The December 17, 2012, ruthless assault and gang rape of a 23-year-old college-going girl on a moving bus in New Delhi shook the nation. Irate protesters, mostly youths, poured out on the streets the next day. As the victim battled for her life on a hospital bed, people across India protested and prayed simultaneously. She was air-lifted to Singapore for advanced treatment and finally succumbed to her injuries there after 13 days. Young protesters in Delhi had to face the wrath of police as they marched on heavily fortified Raisina Hill, the president's official residence. Tear-gas, water cannons andlathis(cane batons) were employed against the enraged mob of protesters who were demanding death for the accused and more stringent laws to deal with rapists. The degree of outrage against the rape is heartening. However, this was not an isolated case, and certainly not the first time such a gruesome incident has taken p ...

Now, BJP leader C P Thakur's 'end reservation' remark stirs controversy April 26, 2014 19:53 IST Bharatiya Janata Party national Vice President C P Thakur was under fire for demanding end of reservation in jobs and educational institutions in the country. "There is no need of reservation in the country. It should end as only politics is being played in the name of reservation" Thakur, a former Union minister told the media in Patna. He was reacting to the Congress party's additional manifesto that promises four per cent reservation to the socio-economically backward Muslims.
Aam Aadmi Party is undergoing a churn. I come across many politically alive people who with a sense of disgust and sadism reflect poetically and propound their theory that the future of this ramshackle agglomeration of neo-liberal swadesis is going to be extinct shortly. I am amused not by their hidden mirth at the peril of someone else, but by their lack of understanding of the process of 'evolution'. Indian National Congress in its over 100 years of existence has had feuds and splits over 100 times and after this years decimating defeat we once again hear numerous revolting voices. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since its inception in 1984 has seen inner feuds and desertions innumerable times, the latest being Jaswant Singh. Pick up any party in this country, we see this phenomena routinely. Though they speak of being democratic, still they invariably veer towards being a 'party around a cult figure'. See All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, All India Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan ...
