Zaki-Biam Massacre: Benue State Govt Gets N8bn Compensation From FG The Federal Government has agreed to compensate for the destruction of lives and property in Zaki-Biam, Benue State in a November 2001 raid by the Nigerian Army by paying the sum of N8 billion to the Benue State Government. This was disclosed by the Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam yesterday who said that an out-of-court settlement had been reached by officials of the state and the Federal Government. He also expressed optimism that the sum would soon be released. Suswam added that though the state had a Court of Appeal judgement in its favour ordering compensation to the tune of N40 billion to be paid to it; it had resorted to an out-of-court settlement due to the FG’s inability to pay. This comes just as a Federal High Court sitting in Port-Harcourt recently awarded N36.7billion as compensation to the Odi community in Bayelsa State for a military action ordered by the Federal Government during the Obasanjo administration in 1999. ...

It was Steve Ato Esq, then Solicitor General of Benue State, that once said government works in mysterious ways. That was in response to a question asked by a Nigerian Law school student of Benue origin that: 'Between one student sent to Scotland on Benue State Government scholarship to study a masters in law degree & the over 200 Benue students in Law School which will the Government derive higher benefit? The question was against the back drop of d failure of d government to pay bursary allowances to it's students in law school whereas d same government had sponsored one of their mates, in d university, to study a masters degree on a sum more than all d Benue students in law school would have needed for their Bursary. Obviously, if government works in mysterious ways it must first think in mysterious ways to work in mysterious ways. If not, how could Gov. Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State have been quoted as saying d Kaduna bombing has no religious undertone?

Benue vs Okupe: Politics by other means? Our Reporter September 7, 2012 No Comments » From CHUKS AKUNNA Benue State Government is locked in a war of words with presidential assistant on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe. This ‘war’ pivots around allegations that the latter’s firm, Value Trust Limited, failed to fully execute a road construction contract awarded in 2004. To raise the ante, Benue State Government penultimate week dragged Okupe before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The government requested the Commission to help recover N635.7 million from the presidential aide, money it said was the balance of the “failed” contract. Okupe has since fired back. He accused the state government of mischief and deliberately distorting the facts. If anybody is to refund money, claimed the presidential aide, it should be Benue State. Okupe insisted the government still owed his company N358 million “for work already done.” He further expressed surprise that the Benue State Gover ...

Peoples Democratic Party through its national publicity secretary, Olisah Metuh said the party had summoned Okupe, to explain his roles in a contract with the Benue State Government. . President Goodluck Jonathan had been asked to sack Okupe because of the contract, which opposition parties had accused him of abandoning after collecting huge sums of money. But Okupe insisted that his company asked for variation on the contract, since its terms had changed, but that the state refused to pay.
