the wonderful Roe Green was honored on Monday 10/21 in NYC by the Dramatists Guild Fund as their "Patron of the Year." The gala included Stephen Schwartz, Ben Vereen, Alan Menken, Jason Robert Brown, Sherie Rene Scott, Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty, Marin Mazzie, Jason Robert Brown, Adam Guettel, Kelli O'Hara, Theresa Rebeck, Julie White, Andrew Lippa, Norbert Leo Butz, Kate Baldwin, George C. Wolfe, Tonya Pinkins, John Guare, and -- as if that wasn't enough –- Stephen Sondheim introduced Bernadette Peters. Musical Theatre heaven right there in the Edison Ballroom (yes, this is where "Oh! Calcutta!" ran for years). The evening's wonderful host was actor Michael Urie (star of "Buyer & Cellar"). Thank you, Roe Green, for supporting the American Theatre by investing in the work of living playwrights.
How beautiful are Ben Vereen and Bernadette Peters?? At the Gala.
BORING NIGHT: So according to my recent statistics, the first Broadway show I ever saw was "Miss Saigon" in 2000, it was also (of course) my first Broadway musical, the last Broadway show I saw was "Peter and the Starcatcher" in 2012, which was also my first Broadway play. I have seen 62 Broadway shows total, among those the five longest running shows in Broadway history, "The Phantom of the Opera", "Cats", "Chicago", "Les Miserables", and "The Lion King", and 19 Tony Winning Best Musicals. Three of those shows out of the 62 I've seen 8 times or more (kind of a freak ain't I?). Out of 40 Broadway theaters I have visited 30, the most beautiful one being the New Amsterdam Theatre. I was fortunate enough to see the original version of "Rent" and then the 2011 Revival. I've also been lucky enough to see Broadway legends Chita Rivera, Bernadette Peters, Patti Lupone and Ben Vereen, and Broadway/Music/Hollywood &/or TV stars Sherie Rene Scott, Harvey Fierstein, Adam Pascal, Jon Secada, Lin Manuel Miranda, Vanes ...
The tropical storm lasted for a very long time in NY last night. My 2 dinner guests came and we had Chinese food. I paid for all the food because I was the host. One of them brought a bottle of good wine and the other brought cannoli cake for desert. We ate food and talked about life. We watched Into The Woods starring Bernadette Peters. This is the definitive version of Into The Woods. No one has played the witch as good as Bernadette has ever. I have seen several different actresses try and do fine but, no one compares to Bernadette. We are looking forward to the new movie starring Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp. This movie should go into production sometime soon hopefully. We talked about Kinky Boots and Matilda. We watched a little bit of Ben Vereen in Pippin when Into The Woods was over. We could hear the storm against the window the whole time. They stayed for 4 hours and then went home. I gave them each a copy of the new Kinky Boots and Pippin CDs to listen to on the car ride home i also sent them h ...
