The U.S. Military Working Dog Teams National Monument was dedicated in a ceremony on Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, Oct. 28. The monument honors all the U.S. military working dog handlers and their beloved dogs who defend America from harm, defeat the enemy and save lives. Four distinct dog breeds are featured on the monument – the Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever and Belgian Malinois. The dog handler represents all dog handlers of the U.S. Armed Forces who served during WW II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War and the war on terrorism.
The History Minute with JA West sponsored by "air quotes". A police dog, often referred to as a "K-9" (which is a homophone of canine) in some areas, is a dog that is trained specifically to assist police and other law-enforcement personnel in their work. The most commonly used breed is the German Shepherd, although now Belgian Malinois are also fairly popular dogs to use. A growing number of law-enforcement organizations outfit dogs with ballistic vests, and some make the dogs sworn officers, with their own police badges and IDs. Furthermore, a police dog killed in the line of duty is often given a full police funeral. Some breeds are used to enforce public order by chasing and holding suspec ...
Yesterday I saw Zero Dark Thirty, the film about the hunt for Bin Laden. I thought it was a great film. It is basically a CIA procedural documenting the hunt. This film will win Oscars, but be warned, this is a slow burn, suspense film for adults about a complicated matter, not a Rah Rah "Go America" film. Though I like those too! Why am I posting this here? Well we got to see Cairo the Navy SEAL Dog in many shots at the end. They used a beautiful German Shepherd instead of a Belgian Malinois which is the breed I believe Cairo is. Though I could be wrong. I only know what I read.
T-minus 48 hours and one German Shepherd and two Belgian Malinois will board the Brussels Airlines flight to JFK with us to begin their new lives in America. Two of the dogs will be getting to work this winter with Search and Rescue. The other is looking for a new family.
May 5, 2011 (PHOTOS) – A Belgian Malinois? Maybe. A German Shepherd? Possibly. The Military Working Dog who was part of Navy Seal Team Six that killed Osama Bin Laden is the source of fierce speculation. Global Animal is told by military sources that this soldier dog, like the other 79 Navy Seals, w...
