Roma0 Manchester City2 Nasri 60′ Zabaleta 86′ Manchester City qualified for the Champions League last 16 for a second successive season as a win at Roma put them through alongside Group E winners Bayern Munich. Samir Nasri scored from 25 yards after the break before Pablo Zabaleta fired in from close range. Earlier Joe Hart tipped Gervinho's strike wide before touching Kostas Manolas's header onto the post. Bayern beat CSKA Moscow 3-0 to confirm City's qualification. It completed a remarkable turnaround for the Premier League champions, who looked to be heading out of the competition after failing to win any of their first four games. However, a 3-2 home win over German champions Bayern, which included a Sergio Aguero hat-trick, kept alive their hopes of making the last 16 - and they took full advantage with a stunning display in Rome. City, who had to win a European match in Italy for the first time, were without skipper Vincent Kompany, who failed a late fitness test, the suspended Yaya Toure and in ...
Edin Džeko: I'm there when Man City need me Edin Dzeko is planning to be the City goal hero in Rome. And the Bosnian Diamond, who has form for coming up with vital strikes, hopes he can help the Blues complete an unlikely Champions League escape, despite losing top scorer Sergio Aguero. The Blues HAVE to score, and better CSKA Moscow’s result at Bayern Munich, to grab second place in their group. But the loss of Aguero, out with knee ligament damage, was a severe blow, especially as Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic are both coming back from injury. Dzeko has been the City saviour many times, not least on the final day of the incredible 2012 title race, when he scored the “other” added time goal that set up Aguero’s immortal winner. He id it again last season, coming into the team when Aguero and Jovetic were injured, and Alvaro Negredo’s form had nosedived, and bagged crucial goals at Crystal Palace and Everton, and in a nervy home win over Aston Villa. Now City will look to him again, either as a star ...

==ARGENTINA vs. SWITZERLAND== Argentina has seemed like a one-man team at this tournament, with Lionel Messi almost single-handedly helping his teammates into the second round. Now that striker Sergio Aguero has been ruled out with a thigh strain, coach Alejandro Sabella is expected to turn to Ezequiel Lavezzi to sharpen the attack and hopefully ease some of the pressure on Messi. "Everybody said we would score loads of goals in the group stage and it's clear that didn't happen," midfielder Maxi Rodriguez said. Switzerland knows what to expect, and that it will have to produce its best defensive performance of the tournament. "I think any defense will face problems when facing Messi, and problems are there to be solved," the team's German coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said on Monday. "How to stop Messi? We will show you tomorrow how we do it." Bayern Munich's Xherdan Shaqiri, who has earned the nickname "the Alpine Messi", will be driving the Swiss forward. A win would equal Switzerland's biggest football achieve ...

Juventus must snub struggling Osvaldo and sign a real top-class forward this summer -SOCCER GIST- The Bianconeri are too over-reliant on Carlos Tevez and will be committing a huge error if they execute their option to retain the on-loan Southampton striker The summer is a pretty predictable period when it comes to football. Real Madrid cause widespread outrage by publicly pursuing a superstar, Bayern Munich weaken all of their Bundesliga rivals, while Juventus regularly fail in their quest to sign one of the planet's best strikers. The upcoming transfer market is unlikely to be any different with regards to Madrid and Bayern, but the Bianconeri simply cannot allow another Sergio Aguero or Robin Van Persie to slip through their fingers. Last year's capture of Carlos Tevez from Manchester City for a cut-price €10 million was actually one of the bargains of 2013. The Argentine is enjoying an outstanding domestic season – joint top-scorer in Serie A with 18 goals as Juventus charge towards a third success ...

Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed top scorer Sergio Aguero will miss Tuesday night's Manchester derby. David Moyes has stepped up his interest in Porto's France international Eliaquim Mangala. Everton manager Roberto Martinez will be the surprise name on Barcelona's shortlist should manager Gerardo Martino leave at the end of the season. Four key games Manchester United’s Robin Van Persie will miss through injury Manchester United v Manchester City (Tuesday March 25) Tuesday’s Manchester derby will see both Van Persie and City’s Sergio Aguero missing through injury. It is a match David Moyes and his players will be desperate to win to make amends for heir 4-1 defeat to their local rivals earlier in the season, as well as the 3-0 humiliation by Liverpool last weekend. Manchester United v Bayern Munich (Tuesday April 1) The home leg of this tough tie could prove crucial for United, who look as though they will need to win this year’s Champions League to qualify for next season’s competition. Bayern Munich v Manchester United (Wednesday April 9) Van Persie is also set to miss the away leg against the reigning European champions, which takes place just a week after they meet at Old Trafford. Everton v Manchester United (Sunday April 20) This could prove a huge match for David Moyes and his team, not just on a personal level as the S ...
My prediections: Barcelona v Atletico Madrid ~ This one will be tight, but I think experience will see Barqa through to the final four. Neymar and Messi will score enough goals to cover for Barqa's defensive deficiencies, and Puyol will be leaving it all out on the field in his final campaign. Barqa will win one for the Gipper and go through. Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund ~ Real Madrid will have more problems than people expect. Don't forget; Borussia Dortmund were the Bundesliga champions two seasons ago. They may appear to have faltered since, but a lot of that is due to Bayern Munich playing out of thier minds and destroying the Bundesliga each of the past two seasons. They won't be scared by Real's attack, and may actually grab a home victory. But it won't be enough; I see Real going through, especially after last year's disappointment. Bale will be the difference. Paris St Germain v Chelsea ~ Easily the premier matchup of this stage in the competition. Less than two years removed from their surpris ...
Manchester United have added another striker to a growing list of potential summer transfer targets, reports the Daily Mail. David Moyes is looking to overhaul his Manchester United squad with as much £200m being set aside for a number of high profile transfers. The Manchester United manager will be looking to strengthen every area of the pitch with a new striker heavy on the agenda. A shortlist of targets has been drawn up by Moyes, thought to contain the likes of PSG's Edinson Cavani, Atletico Madrid's Diego Costa, Mario Mandzukic at Bayern Munich and now starlet Luciano Vietto. The Argentine striker has earned rave reviews for his performances for Argentinian outfit Racing Club and has quickly been labelled as the 'next Sergio Aguero'. At just 20-years-old, Vietto will represent a signing for the future for Moyes, with the striker having significantly less experience than the three aforementioned players. However, with Robin Van Persie still playing a prominent role in the team, Moyes may see the youn ...

Manchester City v Barcelona What a tie this is. Manchester City, fresh off a 6-3 hammering of league leaders Arsenal, seem to be unbeatable at home and are scoring goals for fun. The 3-2 win at Bayern Munich was proof that City are ready to fire with the big boys in Europe this season. The partnership of Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo is a threat to any team on their day and it will be no different here. There are certain players that City have to keep fit however, such as captain Vincent Kompany, Aguero and Yaya Toure. If they do this, City have a real chance. The only concern for City is their struggling away form, which has been evident in the league. It remains to be seen as to whether they will cope with Barca's fluent passing at the Camp Nou. Although this seems like a very tough draw for Man City, Barcelona are certainly not the team that they were three or four years ago. They have major problems at the back, with Gerard Pique proving to be inconsistent, Javier Mascherano not completely settling ...

To win against Bayern Munich and score three goals without Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure, Alvaro Negredo and Sergio Aguero shows how awesome team we are
Chelsea refuse to give up the battle for Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski. Lewandowski is expected to move to Bayern Munich at the end of the season. But El Confidencial says Chelsea and Real Madrid are preparing to test Dortmund's resolve in January. Indeed, the paper suggest that while Real Madrid consider Lewandowski a potentially cheaper alternative to Liverpool's Luis Suarez or Manchester City's Sergio Aguero they are not willing to match Chelsea in the matter. Jose Mourinho, on the other hand, senses a bargain and an opportunity to get one over on old rival Pep Guardiola - now at Bayern - and is prepared to tell Dortmund to name their price for Lewandowski in January - and meet the player's wage demands - to pull off an unlikely coup.
Stamford Bridge side want Etihad Stadium ace. Chelsea are reportedly ready to challenge Bayern Munich in the pursuit of Man City striker Sergio Aguero according to TuttoMercato. The West London side are being linked with a stunning 50m (£42m) bid for the in-form Argentine as Jose Mourinho looks to address his stuttering Stamford Bridge strike-force. Mourinho's current quartet of strikers, Demba Ba, Samuel Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Andre Schurrle have scored just three Premier League goals between them this year, indeed loaned out Belgian Romelu Lukaku has outscored them by managing five in five appearances for Everton. Pep Guardiola is apparently keen on bringing 25 year old Aguero to the Allianz Arena but Mourinho may have other ideas though one wonders if Man City would consider any offers for such a pivotal player, especially one who has only recently been tied down to a long term contract. The former Atletico Madrid man has been a massive success since making his £38m move to the Etihad Stadium bac ...
**Morning gist** Alvaro Negredo's hat-trick ensured Manchester City moved into the Champions League knockout phase for the first time with a comfortable win over CSKA Moscow. Sergio Aguero was the initial inspiration, scoring two and setting up another for Negredo as City scored three times inside the first half-hour to make it a straightforward night for Manuel Pellegrini's side. Having already secured a victory in Moscow, City knew they would be able to progress into the last 16 at the third time of asking if they won again and Viktoria Plzen failed to beat holders Bayern Munich. Aguero's early penalty was followed by a cool finish before a cross for strike partner Negredo effectively ended the contest. Seydou Doumbia did pull a goal back for CSKA before the interval but the outstanding Samir Nasri set up Negredo's second just after half-time to restore City's three-goal advantage. Doumbia beat City keeper Costel Pantilimon, once again chosen ahead of England keeper Joe Hart, from the spot for his secon ...

The Spaniard was superb as Manchester City picked up a crucial 2-1 win at CSKA Moscow on Wednesday night and the success put Manuel Pellegrini's side back on track for qualifying from UEFA Champions League Group D. Sadly, the game was marred by racist chanting from the stands but, on the field, Silva was the star man. Sergio Aguero may have scored twice to help City comeback from Zoran Tosic's opener on a much-talked-about difficult pitch in Moscow, however, it was impossible to ignore Silva. He seems to be back to his wizardry performances of City's Premier League-winning campaign of 2011/12. CSKA Moscow v Manchester City starting line-ups Selection Boss Pellegrini made three changes for the crucial game in Russia as City aimed to respond to their humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich on Matchday Two. Full-backs Pablo Zabaleta and Aleksandar Kolarov replaced Micah Richards and Gael Clichy while Jesus Navas returned at the expense of Samir Nasri. That meant strikers Aguero and Alvaro Negredo again led ...
Manchester City 3-1 Everton Manchester City ended Everton's unbeaten record in the Barclays Premier League to finish a difficult week on a high. Defeats by Aston Villa and Bayern Munich had made this a very important game for City and under-pressure goalkeeper Joe Hart, and they responded in style with a 3-1 win at the Etihad Stadium. Romelu Lukaku put Everton ahead in the 16th minute but Alvaro Negredo equalised a minute later and Sergio Aguero struck to give the hosts the lead just before half-time. The unlucky Tim Howard then diverted in a third in the 69th minute after initially saving Aguero's penalty. The victory was only City's third in 13 attempts against Everton, who tasted defeat for the first time in the league under Roberto Martinez. Shuvam
FULL MATCH UPDATE BW Man City 3 EVERTON 1 90’ FT: Man City 3 EVERTON 1 City rebound from the midweek beating by Bayern Munich, coming from a goal down to end the last unbeaten record in the Premier League. Everton started well and grabbed the lead on 16 minutes, Romelu Lukaku shooting past Joe Hart. That advantage, though, lasted barely a minute, with Alvaro Negredo making no mistake after an incisive pass by Yaya Toure. There was little to choose between the sides in the first half, but City went into the interval in front thanks to a 45th-minute strike from Sergio Aguero, with David Silva supplying the assist. Everton were extremely disappointing after the break and there was only ever going to be one winner. City made sure of the points 20 minutes from time when the unlucky Tim Howard saved Aguero's penalty, but saw the ball end up in the net via a post and then his back. 90’ NASRI DENIED A FOURTH Toure puts in Nasri down the left and the Frenchman is denied a fourth for City by Howard's point-bla ...
English Premier League – Preview Week SEVEN Saturday Games Manchester City Vs Everton - 9.45pm (AEST) Just when you though Manuel Pellegrini was finding his feet with City and English football, he follows this up with a stunning 3-2 loss at Aston Villa, followed by a 3-1 hammering in front of their home faithful against Champions of Europe – Bayern Munich. The blue Mancunians need to act and act fast, they seem to lose concentration in games which hurts them big time. There is good news for the 2012 champions as they welcome the return of Sergio Aguero and David Silva who both sat out the game at Villa Park. The Chilean manager must get back to winning ways, nothing but three points in this match can spell danger and pressure on all fronts. The undefeated Everton are flying high in the top four coming off another win over Newcastle on Tuesday morning. Roberto Martinez is definitely taking shape on his new club and has already won the fans over. They would be going in to this game happy with a point a ...

Franck Ribery put the reigning champions ahead seven minutes in before Thomas Muller made it two after the interval. Backpass, February 19, Part 1 Edin Dzeko is willing to take a pay cut to seal a £20million summer move to Borussia Dortmund. Dzeko, 26, is thought to earn around £120,000 a week at Manchester City. But the striker has become increasingly frustrated at not getting a consistent run in the first team. And the German champs believe the Bosnian will jump at the chance to join Dortmund where he will be the main man. The 26-year-old joined City in a £27million switch from Wolfsburg two years ago. He has 16 goals in all competitions this season but he is facing fierce competition from Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero for a starting place. Dortmund want Dzeko as a possible replacement for Robert Lewandowski who is expected to leave in the summer to join Bayern Munich. The German giants would prefer to sell Lewandowski to Manchester United but the Polish international seems to favour a move to Bayern. Deliberation: If Dzeko eventually quits City... who will gain more? Player or club?
Why spain is the powerhouse of soccer? . . . . Two cities, three clubs. The world’s best XI of 2012 was comprised entirely of players from Barcelona (5), Real Madrid (5) and Falcao from Atletico Madrid. Or ‘Madrid 6 Barcelona 5’ according to Madrid-based sport paper AS, who prefer club and city one-upmanship. Not a single player who makes his living in the footballing powerhouses of Manchester, Munich or Milan made the XI. Not one who plays in Turin, Dortmund or Paris either. Casillas; Alves, Pique, Ramos, Marcelo; Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta; Messi, Falcao, Ronaldo are the chosen few, voted for by their peers from 49 players’ unions worldwide. It’s an incredible, if awkwardly named, FIFA/FIFPro Team, but it’s partly subjective and arguments will prevail. Why no Philipp Lahm, captain of Bayern Munich and Germany? What about Manchester City’s Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero or Vincent Kompany? Andrea Pirlo, Giorgio Chiellini or Gianluigi Buffon from Italy? There’s no Petr Cech or Ashley Cole from Chels ...

Manchester City lead Chelsea in £47m race for Falcao A summer move failed to materialise as the club were unable to offload Edin Dzeko despite interest from AC Milan and Bayern Munich, while Carlos Tevez's return to form saw him return to favour under Roberto Mancini. Chelsea are also huge admirers of Falcao, who has scored 42 goals in 53 appearances for Atletico Madrid including a stunning hat-trick against the Blues in his side's Uefa Supercup victory in Monaco last Friday. But City are confident of landing their man after a 12-month long pursuit with Atletico's recent financial struggles ensuring they must listen to big-money offers for their star player. Falcao has a €60m (£47m) release clause in his Atletico Madrid contract and City believe their strong relationship with the Spanish club will help to facilitate a deal. City eased Atletico's financial difficulties last year by paying £38m to sign Sergio Aguero, from under the noses of their great rivals Real Madrid, with most of the transfer fee ...

Carlos Tevez scored a stunning hat-trick as Manchester City turned the heat up on league leaders Manchester United with a clinical hammering of Norwich at Carrow Road. Starting successive Barclays Premier League games for the first time in 11 months, Tevez blasted home a 20-yard swirling shot to open the scoring before he backheeled to Sergio Aguero, who made it 2-0 with a venomous volley. Tevez, who famously went AWOL in Argentina for six months after refusing to come off the bench against Bayern Munich, is now well and truly back to his best and could yet have a decisive say in this title race with his former employers. The diminutive striker looked sharp all afternoon, dropping deep and working the channels all game to cause the Canaries all sorts of probl ...
