Once more on Monday night, they were crowned as the best two players in football - despite the World Cup providing the greatest advertisement to the modern game. It also served as an example as to why both still have some way to go to reach the pinnacle of the sport. Ronaldo – albeit carrying an injury – was a shadow of himself in Brazil, while Messi started superbly but saw his form fall away when Argentina needed it most in the latter stages. The likes of Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller and Philipp Lahm had fantastic personal tournaments, as well as great calendar years with Bayern Munich, and also delivered the silverware in the greatest competition of them all. But that mattered not come Ballon d’Or time. When did the World Cup become so meaningless in the minds of the football masses? How did that pulsating month in Brazil come to be so quickly forgotten amidst a sea of La Liga hat-tricks? England coach Roy Hodgson was widely lambasted on social media for selecting Javier Mascherano as his number o ...

Alonso: Hard for a German to beat Messi & Ronaldo to Ballon d'Or 19-Nov-2014 The midfielder feels a German player has a chance if the award is decided on team success, but the Madrid and Barca stars have it wrapped up based on individual displays Bayern Munich star Xabi Alonso believes that it would be tough for a German player to beat Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi to the Ballon d'Or. The veteran Spaniard made a surprise summer move to the Allianz Arena from Real Madrid, where he played alongside Ronaldo and enjoyed many battles with Messi's Barcelona. A number of Bayern's contingent of German World Cup winners are nominated for the prestigious award, including the likes of Philipp Lahm, Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer, but Alonso feels the Liga pairing are still ahead of the competition in terms of individual performances. He told Sport Bild: "It's a very general question: is the award about individual, personal performances? "In this case, it would be tough against Messi and Ronaldo. Or is it about t ...
The City offers 13 million a year to Marco Reus, according to Bild The star of Borussia Dortmund has a buyout clause of 25 million euros contract until June 2016. Bayern and Real Madrid are also meant to you. The German international Marco Reus is a target for Manchester City, according to the newspaper "Bild", had offered to Borussia Dortmund player a salary of 13 million euros a year. Reus can leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of this season in exchange for payment of a termination clause of 25 million euros. Bayern Munich until now was considered the favorite in the race for Reus although his name has also been frequently associated with the Barcelona and Real Madrid. Economically, the offer of the City may be above where Bayern are the highest paid players Franck Ribery, Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger having an estimated 12 million a year salary. However, it is possible that in making its decision the player also consider various other economic factors as it did and does in 2012 when, being ...

Real Madrid are Champions League favourites, says Lahm The former Germany international says the club's summer outlay, which included the signing of Toni Kroos from Bayern, makes them the side to beat in Europe Sep 15, 2014 00:02:19 Bayern Munich skipper Philipp Lahm believes that Real Madrid enter this season's Champions League as favourites after winning the competition last year. The Bundesliga champions were beaten 5-0 on aggregate by Carlo Ancelotti's side at the semi-final stage, despite having won the tournament the previous term. The 30-year-old feels that the Spanish side will be the team to beat once more but is determined to add to his one winners' medal in the European Cup before he calls it a day. "The club have strengthened an already-excellent team with a lot of money," he told Kicker. "Real are certainly the team to beat. I want to win this trophy again. Whether with the squad we have this season or in the new three years, I want a shot at the title." Bayern begin their bid to win the Cham ...
BEST XI OF THE TOP 5 LEAGUES IN EUROPE Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer: One of the easier decisions to make.Neuer is, in my opinion, the best ‘keeper in world football, and that’s that. He has everything a ‘keeper wants and needs to be the best. Neuer is quite sensational, playing as a sweeper-keeper at times. The big German is head and shoulders above any ‘keeper these days, with Thibaut Courtois the next in line. Amazing! Right-back: Philipp Lahm (C): Lahm is a full-back by trade, and a right-back in particular. However,he’s recently been operated as a holding midfield player for Bayern Munich, where he’s just as good.Nonetheless, I’m going to stick him in at right-back, because I still see the German as the best full-back in world football. Centre-back: Thiago Silva: The best defender in world football in my opinion. Silva is an animal and is just the complete centre-back. The Brazilian is great in the air, he knows how to tackle, he can pass the ball and he gets you the odd goal. A brilliant de ...
_Bastian Schweinsteiger has been named as the new captain of the German national team, head coach Joachim Low announced at a news conference on Tuesday. Schweinsteiger, inherits the armband from Bayern Munich teammate Philipp Lahm, who retired from international football at the age of just 30 after leading Germany to their fourth World Cup triumph in July. The midfielder's first outing as captain will be a rematch of the World Cup final when Germany host Argentina in a friendly in Dusseldorf on Wednesday. _New Manchester United signing Angel Di Maria has revealed that he stayed at Real Madrid last season because of his friendship with Cristiano Ronaldo. _Former AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko believes Mario Balotelli deserves another chance after a difficult spell at the San Siro side and hopes the Italy international can make an impact at Liverpool. Balotelli made a fine start to life at Milan after joining them from Manchester City in January 2013, but failed to replicate that form in 2013-14 and was ...
Lionel Messi misses out as Bayern dominate European Player of the Year voting The shift in power within European football was underlined yesterday when two Bayern Munich players were among the nominees to be named the continent's top-three players, with Lionel Messi left out for the first time in eight years. Manuel Neuer, the Bayern goalkeeper, and his team-mate, winger Arjen Robben, were yesterday named by Uefa on the shortlist for European Footballer of the Year, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid. Four-time winner Messi - who was second last year behind Bayern's Frank Ribery - did not make the cut from the final 10. The omission of the Argentine reflected the fact that Barcelona did not win either a Spanish or European honour last season, although the forward did lead his national side to the World Cup final. However, the fact that Neuer was one of three German players listed in the top five - Bayern team-mates Thomas Mueller and Philipp Lahm were the others - underlines the scale of the task ...
Ronaldo leads Uefa Best Player in Europe nominees as Messi is snubbed The 10-man shortlist has been reduced to three, with the Ballon d'Or holder set to battle it out with Bayern Munich duo Arjen Robben and Manuel Neuer for the prize Manuel Neuer, Arjen Robben and Cristiano Ronaldo have been named as the final three nominees for the Uefa Best Player in Europe award. The trio were named as part of an initial 10-man shortlist announced in July, which included Angel Di Maria, Diego Costa, Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, Philipp Lahm, James Rodriguez and Thomas Muller. Current Ballon d'Or holder Ronaldo has now been voted into the final three, along with Bayern Munich's star winger Robben and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who added the World Cup to his Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal successes last season, but Barcelona's Argentine star could only finish fifth in the voting. The winner will be announced on August 28 in Monaco during the group-stage draw for the Champions League. The Uefa Best Player prize began in 2011 under ...
Barcelona star Lionel Messi is one of 10 players who have been nominated for the Best Player in Europe award after guiding Argentina to the final of the World Cup. The prolific attacker was controversially handed the World Cup Golden Ball earlier this month ahead of Bayern Munich duo Thomas Muller (Germany) and Arjen Robben (Netherlands) and is now in the frame to bag yet another prestigious individual award. The 10-man shortlist for the prize is dominated by Bayern Munich players, with Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer accompanying the aforementioned Muller and Robben. Real Madrid have two representatives on the list in Portugal attacker Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina's Angel Di Maria, while Colombia star James Rodriguez is the only candidate from Ligue 1. Luis Suarez and Diego Costa, who both switched clubs this summer, complete the shortlist. Sergio Ramos, Thibaut Courtois, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andrea Pirlo and Yaya Toure all narrowly missed out and occupy places 11 to 15. A jury of journalists from each o ...
SPORTS UPDATE: Germany captain Philipp Lahm has retired from international football after leading his side to victory at the World Cup in Brazil. The 30-year-old Bayern Munich defender, who can also play in midfield, played 113 times for Germany. New Real Madrid signing Toni Kroos has voiced his admiration for Pep Guardiola and has stressed that the Bayern Munich coach has helped him become a better player. Kroos worked under Guardiola at Bayern during the 2013-14 campaign and was temporarily benched by the former Barcelona boss shortly after the winter break. Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere made an early start to his pre-season preparations after he returned to training three days before most of his team-mates. Wilshere's return comes days after photographs of him with a cigarette in his mouth while on holiday in Las Vegas were published by the Daily Mail - and were said to have earned him a reprimand from manager Arsene Wenger. The 22 year old posted a picture to his Instagram account which showed him ...
RIO DE JANEIRO -- Three thoughts from Germany's 1-0 win vs. France in the World Cup quarterfinal. 1. Low changes his mind Bastian Schweinsteiger or Sami Khedira -- there could only be one. That had been the message before and during the tournament, as Germany coach Joachim Low had to come to terms with both his regular central midfielders not being quite ready for the full exertions of a World Cup in Brazil. The job-sharing had worked reasonably well, all things considered. However, against France on Friday, Schweinsteiger and Khedira were back together in the starting lineup for the first time since October 2013 -- a 3-0 win versus Ireland in World Cup qualifying. Schweinsteiger was the deepest of Germany's central midfield trio, Toni Kroos was slightly to the left and Khedira a bit to the right. And where was the captain Philipp Lahm? The Bayern Munich man was back in his traditional right-back position. Before the game, that news was greeted with a sharp intake of air in the German section of the Marac ...
SPORTS UPDATE WITH EMMAH ATAI: Chelsea will not let Eden Hazard, 23, join Paris St-Germain and the French champions have all but given up hope of signing the Belgian international, according to coach Laurent Blanc. Arsenal are set to offer AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli, 23, a deal worth £180,000 per week to move to Emirates Stadium this summer. Toni Kroos, the 24 year old Manchester United target is no closer to committing his future to Bayern Munich despite the midfielder's team-mates Thomas Muller and Philipp Lahm being given new deals. SPORTS UPDATE WITH EMMAH ATAI: Arsenal have told Real Sociedad they will activate the £3.5million buy-back option on Carlos Vela. Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay has been in London for talks with Arsenal this week in an attempt to buy the Mexico striker but lasnight confirmed that Arsenal have informed them that Vela would be with them next season. Germany captain Philipp Lahm and winger Thomas Mueller have signed new deals that add two years to their existing contracts at Bayern Munich. Bayern skipper Lahm, who can play either at full-back or as a holding midfielder, extended his deal with the German champions until 2018, while the 24-year-old Mueller's agreement now runs until 2019. "Both Philipp Lahm and Thomas Mueller are very important elements of Bayern Munich," Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz said in a statement on the club's website. Good evening. Tonight we continue our look at World Cup Groups with a look at Group G. GERMANY (seeded) How do they play? Style & formation: Blessed with far more flair than many Germany sides of the past, their fluid 4-2-3-1 is underpinned by Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira - recently back from a long-term injury - anchoring the side from the base of midfield. Ahead of them lies creative fulcrum Mesut Ozil, who is usually flanked by the dangerous Marco Reus and Thomas Muller. Strengths: They have an incredible array of attacking midfielders that guarantee goals. Manuel Neuer can lay claim to being the world's best goalkeeper and Philipp Lahm, whatever position he plays in, brings calmness and tactical nous along with his vice-captain Schweinsteiger. The free-scoring Müller has a priceless knack of being in the right place at the right time. Weaknesses: More than you'd imagine. Left-back is an issue for coach Joachim Low, while the defence as a whole has been porous of late and was given a torrid ...
Low faced with German injury worries Germany will begin their pre-FIFA World Cup™ training camp on Wednesday amid injury concerns to several key players. Coach Joachim Low will gather his 27-man squad at a five-star hotel in the idyllic south Tirolean resort of St, Leonhard, where his stars will train in northern Italy for the next ten days. They play their opening Group G match against Portugal in Salvador on 16 June. There are concerns for the Bayern Munich trio of Germany skipper Philipp Lahm (bruised ankle), vice-captain Bastian Schweinsteiger (inflamed knee ligament) and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (shoulder). Low will also have to *** the fitness of Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira and Lazio striker Miroslav Klose, both of whom are short of match-fitness after long spells on the sidelines. "With regard to the World Cup participation of Manuel and Philipp, we are optimistic but both will be treated intensively," said Low. "It is good and also important that they will be with us from the start in t . ...
Lahm: Our defence must improve - Germany captain Philipp Lahm feels said his side must drastically improve their defence or risk an early 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ exit. "We have to work especially on our defence," the Bayern Munich star told Bild with Germany facing Portugal in their opening Group G game on 16 June in Salvador. "Recently, we have conceded far too many goals and allowed our opponents too many chances. We must pay more attention to our defensive formation and the whole team is needed for that." Traditionally, Germany have relied on a rock-solid defence at major tournaments, but they have leaked goals in recent games, namely the 3-3 friendly with Paraguay last August and the 4-4 World Cup qualifier against Sweden in October 2012. The 30-year-old Lahm admits this could well be his last chance to win the World Cup title having reached the semi-finals at both Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010. "I do not want to go out in the semi-finals again or visit Brazil to soak up the sun," he said w ...

Philipp Lahm has insisted Pep Guardiola is still the right man for Bayern Munich, claiming the Catalan's style is perfectly suited to the club.
All the seven Bayern Munich players in the Die Mannschaft squad could be automatic starters. That means the rest of the boys will compete for the remaining four slots. Otherwise, Manuel Neuer is btn the sticks even if he is amputated. Boateng. is in central CD or right back, depending on system Thomas Müller is in attack.
Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm has insisted that the Allianz Arena side have their own style of play and are not looking to copy Pep Guardiola's former club. Lahm told Kicker, "Barcelona were the benchmark between 2008 and 2012 and played some very exciting football. But it was never our goal to become a second Barcelona,"
Champions League semifinal - Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid at Allianz Arena on 30 April 2014. Match starts at 12:30 am India time. It's the clash between two of the biggest spenders in club football. Real Madrid are worth 425 millions and Bayern are worth 314 million pounds in player values. Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola have been good with their respective teams but RM stands a better chance after the 1-0 lead in the first leg. Bayern were tactically naive in the first leg where RM played without Gareth Bale and CR without full fitness. Will the Bavarians get the two required goals and prevent RM from scoring that 1 away goal? Real Madrid: Iker Casillas; Marcelo, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Dani Carvajal; Ángel di María, Xabi Alonso, Luka Modrić; Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale. David Moyes suggested Wayne Rooney would be fit to play and true to the Manchester United manager's word, the striker is in the starting XI. Rio Ferdinand drops to the bench, with Chris Smalling taking his place in the side. Patrice Evra, Darren Fletcher and Shinji Kagawa come in for Alex Buttner, Marouane Fellaini and Ryan Giggs respectively. Meanwhile, defender Dante, midfielder Mario Gotze and forward Mario Mandzukic come into the Bayern Munich side. There is no place for right-back Rafinha, with Philipp Lahm taking up his position.
According to German newspaper Bild, Bayern Munich have been practicing defending set pieces in secret ahead of their Champions League quarter- final against Manchester United. The paper claims that Philipp Lahm will play at right-back, with Toni Kroos filling in for the suspended Bastian Schweinsteiger in midfield and Mario Gotze and Mario Mandzukic playing in attack, with the scores level at 1-1 from the first leg at Old Trafford.
Do not fear we have not entered a parallel universe - as much as it might just feel that way after looking at the respective Bayern Munich and Manchester United results this afternoon. As United were tearing apart Newcastle United away from home - eventually winning the game 4-0 to consolidate their position as the best team on their travels in the Premier League - the unbeatable Bayern Munich were beaten. They lost 1-0 to FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga - their first defeat in 53 games and the first time they have failed to score since that 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in last season’s Champions League. United will therefore surely go into the Champions League second leg against Bayern with quiet optimism of pulling off a shock. And that is when I would reel in the excitement and give you all the bad news. Bayern Munich rested an abundance of first-teamers for the game - some for all of it, some for most. The likes of Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Philipp Lahm were all told to stay at home while David Alaba, ...
Last night presented Manchester United with the opportunity to face up against a player they have been strongly linked with signing this summer in the form of Toni Kroos. Kroos had a decent game in a Bayern Munich midfield which dominated United for most of the match, he protected possession well and looked like a potentially very good investment on the part of the club. So how did he shape up against the players who started in United’s midfield; Antonio Valencia, Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs and Danny Welbeck over on the left hand side. Passing Accuracy Kroos outperformed all of United’s midfielders with a passing accuracy percentage of 96%. The United midfielder with the highest passing accuracy was Fellaini on 75%, Carrick with 74% and Welbeck with 73%. It suggests Kroos would be just as effective, if not more so, in terms of passing against United’s current crop of midfield stars. Kroos also made more passes than any United player during the game with 92, only Philipp Lahm and ...
Champions League draw reaction Since the 1999 Champions League final, Manchester United have won just one of their six Champions League encounters with Bayern Munich. But Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm says they will not pay attention to previous meetings or United's current struggles. "We can't allow Manchester United's current position in the Premier League table or history affect our mindset for this," adds the Germany international. "We'll travel to Manchester to play attacking football and score goals. I don't think it matters if you play the away leg first. "The most important thing will be to score goals in the away leg."

According to Philipp Lahm, the captain of Bayern Munich, fellow countryman Mesut Ozil can be the Best Player in England once he adapts to the Premier League.
Bayern Munich head up, Arsenal head out Wednesday 12 March 2014 = A second-half Bastian Schweinsteiger goal gave Bayern a brief lead before Arsenal’s Lukas Podolski equalised with a thunderbolt of a shot as the tie finished 3-1 on aggregate. “We put in a very, very good first-half and controlled the game by giving away no goal chances,” said Bayern captain Philipp Lahm. “But we made a few too many mistakes in the second-half.” Arsenal, who also went out at the same stage of the competition to the same opponents last season, failed to overturn their 2-0 deficit from the first leg three weeks ago. Amidst hopes of repeating last season’s shock 2-0 win in Munich, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger made six changes from the team which lost to Bayern in London. Bayern coach Pep Guardiola made three changes from the first leg, switching from a 4-1-4-1 in London to the 4-2-3-1 formation used in last season’s European final. “We didn’t gave them many chances, we had expected them to push forward a bit mo ...
Bayern Munich 1-1 Arsenal: Podolski goal not enough to worry dominant Germans... Bayern Munich were never really troubled tonight by Arsenal who did manage to stop their German rivals winning a 14th consecutive match. Bastian Schweinsteiger bagged the game's opening goal following clever work from Franck Ribery down Bayern's left. Lukas Podolski fouled Philipp Lahm for the Gunners' equaliser, but although everyone stopped playing, the referee never gave it, and the former Bayern forward went and slammed the ball inside the near post from a tight angle. Sadly for Arsenal though, it wasn't enough - and Bayern went through 3-1 on aggregate.

Philipp Lahm admitted the memory of last season’s home defeat to Arsenal had entered his mind before Bayern Munich edged through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday night. Bayern lost 2-0 to Arsene Wenger’s side 12 months ago but edged through on the away goals rule on their way to winning the trophy. They went into Wednesday’s tie in a commanding position having won the first leg 2-0 at the Emirates and strengthened their hand further when Bastian Schweinsteiger put them ahead after 55 minutes. But former Bayern forward Lukas Podolski equalised almost immediately and, buoyed by the goal, Arsenal poured forward, causing the hosts some nervous moments. They were unable to breach the Bayern backline again, however, and it was Pep Guardiola’s side who ought to have restored their advantage on the night only for Thomas Muller to miss a late penalty. The 3-1 aggregate scoreline may appear comfortable but Lahm conceded there were some flutters when Podolski scored.
This time last year, on a steamy night inside the Allianz Arena, the great and the good in this Bayern Munich team wobbled in a way we have never seen before. Manuel Neuer looked at his captain Philipp Lahm to ask what could be done. Lahm looked at Arjen Robben. Robben looked at Toni Kroos. Kroos looked at Thomas Muller. Blank faces all round. Only Arsenal, with dramatic strikes from Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny, had the answers in a powerful Champions League performance. Instead it ended for Arsenal in a way that it always seems to end for them these days - glorious failure. Bayern, under coach Jupp Heynckes, squeaked through and went on to win the trophy. This evening, when Arsenal step into this giant hot- air balloon of a stadium on the outskirts of Munich, they will need the same again and more following a 2-0 first-leg defeat at the Emirates if they are to topple Pep Guardiola's team.
Bayern Munich: five things Pep Guardiola has done to improve them As they prepare to face Arsenal, here's how manager Pep Guardiola has made the European champions even stronger 1 He keeps his opponents guessing Under Louis Van Gaal, the godfather of Bayern's possession game and Jupp Heynckes, his more pragmatic and tactically refined successor, it was easy to predict Bayern's lineups. They always formed-up in a 4-2-3-1, changes were always injury-enforced, and both coaches would simply try to find replacements that would most closely resemble the properties of the missing regulars. Under Guardiola, that kind of certainty has largely gone out of the window. Only the back-four are settled. Philipp Lahm's transformation into a holding midfielder seems to have become permanent but it's still possible that the captain will find himself back in the right-back role later this season. Javier Martínez, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thiago Alcântara and Toni Kroos are all vying for places in midfield and have been use ...
Lahm: I can't wait for the World Cup (FIFA.com) Wednesday 5 March 2014 Share As the respective coaches of Germany and Bayern Munich, Joachim Low and Pep Guardiola may not have much in common. However, one trait they do share is a blind faith in Philipp Lahm. Given the 30-year-old's consummate ease in possession, both coaches now view the full-back as a viable candidate to play in holding midfield. Lahm is currently at the peak of an already illustrious career, having led Bayern to Uefa Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup triumphs last year, as well as being included in the FIFA/FIFPro World XI. Yet while the Munich native has won everything possible at club level, he still has one unfulfilled ambition to achieve with Germany this summer in Brazil. ::: SOCCER NEWS::: Gerardo Martino insists Barcelona will not relax after their 2-0 Uefa Champions League victory at Manchester City on Tuesday. Lionel Messi opened the scoring from the spot shortly after half-time of the first leg of the last-16 tie after Martin Demichelis was sent off for bringing him down just inside the penalty area. Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc praised his side's mentality after their 4-0 Uefa Champions League demolition of Bayer Leverkusen. Blanc's team eased to an emphatic win in the first leg of their last-16 clash in Germany on Tuesday, Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring a double after Blaise Matuidi's early opener, before Yohan Cabaye capped off a fine performance with his first goal since joining from Newcastle United last month. Pep Guardiola believes that it would be "impossible" to face Bayern Munich's clash against Arsenal without Philipp Lahm in his squad. Read more Manchester United fc news. The 24 year old has been embroiled in long term contract talks and has recently been dropped to the bench by boss Pep Guardiola and comments made by captain Philipp Lahm have led to growing speculation that the midfielder could leave the Allianz Arena this summer. Lahm stated; “It is normal that one explores their position and negotiate,” he told Sport Bild regarding Kroos. “If you currently play for Bayern there are few alternatives, if any, though. “It is, in my eyes, an absolute privilege to play here because the team simply has the mentality to win. Many players want to come to Bavaria. “So you have to think carefully about whether you leave a club like this at the moment.” Kroos’s ...
Bayern Munich restored their lead at the top of the Bundesliga thanks to a rare Philipp Lahm goal, while Borussia Dortmund smashed Werder Bremen as Robert Lewandowski and Henrikh Mkhitaryan ran riot! Nurnberg 0-2 Bayern Munich Werder Bremen 1-5 Borussia Dortmund
Derby win sees Bayern make it 45 unbeaten Bayern Munich’s dominant 45-game unbeaten league record continued with a 2-0 victory in the 188th Bavarian derby at 1.FC Nurnberg. Mario Mandzukic continued to be influential in recent performances - scoring the first on 17 minutes and assisting the second for Philipp Lahm on 48 minutes. It restores the club’s 13-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga over nearest challengers Bayer Leverkusen and their winning streak away from home with 29 matches on the road where they’ve hit the net and taken the points. But despite a lively and intense start to proceedings, 1.FC Nurnberg were forced into two substitutions in the first 20 minutes with Timothy Chandler and Daniel Ginczek hobbling off. After two victories in their first two games since the winter break, Gertjan Verbeek’s men were evidently determined to make it a third and hand Bayern Munich their first defeat in 44 matches. Former Borussia Dortmund striker Ginczek slammed the first shot on target inside ...
Is the Premier League slipping? Is the Premier League slipping? Just as Arsenal were arriving at Villa Park on Monday night, at the Ballon d'Or ceremony, Ruud Gullit and Fernanda Lima welcomed the final three members of the FIFA FIFPro World XI - Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo - onto the stage in Zurich's Kongresshaus. Their arrival confirmed what we had known all along: Though some 14 Premier League players had made the 55-strong list of nominees, for the third time in four years, not one of them would be elected to the final XI. Looking at the players selected ahead of them, it is hard to argue. The 50,000-plus professional players who voted had constructed quite a side. Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm and Franck Ribery from Bayern Munich; Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Daniel Alves and Messi of Barcelona; two players from Real Madrid - Sergio Ramos and Ronaldo - and two from Paris Saint-Germain in the form of Thiago Silva and Ibrahimovic. True, the midfield looked a little imbalanced. Perhaps ...
Bayern Munich winger Frank Ribery has been getting plenty of support in Germany and his native France to be named winner of the Ballon d'Or. Cristiano Ronaldo is considered the strong favourite, while Lionel Messi has won the award in each of the past four years. "I think it's clear Franck deserves it this year. I voted for Franck," says Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm. Three-time Fifa World Player of the Year Zinedine Zidane adds: "They [Ribery and Cristiano Ronaldo] both deserve it, but I would give it to Franck because he played a fundamental role in the three major trophies that Bayern Munich won last season."

Bayern Munich beat hosts Raja Casablanca 2-0 in the final to win the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup Championship on Saturday night. Dante and Thiago Alcantara scored first- half goals for Bayern, which were enough for them to claim to the trophy. Toni Kroos tried a shot from outside the box in the fifth minute but Khalid Askri saved easily. A minute later Mouhcine Iajour had a chance for Raja Casablanca, but his attempt went wide to the right. Bayern went into the lead in the eighth minute when Dante shot in with his right foot after Jerome Boateng headed the ball to him from a corner kick. Philipp Lahm set up Thomas Muller in the 11th minute but his shot from the right of the box was saved by Askri. Bayern beat Hamburg, Dortmund stutter Bayern Munich bounced back from their midweek Manchester City defeat with a 3-1 win over Hamburg in the Bundesliga, while Borussia Dortmund suffered a Uefa Champions League hangover. Bayern slumped to their first defeat since July on Tuesday when they were beaten 3-2 at home to City, but still went through as group winners to the Champions League's last 16. Bayern bounced back on their return to league duty at the Allianz Arena with goals by Mario Mandzukic and Mario Gotze before Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri added the third deep into added time. Bayern surrendered their ten-match record Champions League winning run to City, but victory over Bert van Marwijk's Hamburg extended their record unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to 41 matches. Despite starting with France winger Franck Ribery and left-back David Alaba on the bench, while captain Philipp Lahm and star midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger are injured, Bayern still started with ten internationals. Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayern Munich: Final score 0-3, Mario Götze sinks his former club Through 13 games, Borussia Dortmund are seven points off the pace in the Bundesliga, thanks to Bayern Munich’s clinical finishing in the second half of Saturday’s contest. It’s only November, but Bayern Munich are looking like very heavy favorites to lift the Bundesliga title. They still have Bayern Leverkusen to deal with, but they’ll feel confident about their ability to hold off Borussia Dortmund after Saturday’s 3-0 win at the Westfalenstadion. Bayern started the match with a very unconventional tactic. Instead of playing one of their normal lineups, either a 4-1-4-1 formation with two forward-thinking midfielders in front of a holder or 4-2-3-1 with Toni Kroos or Thomas Müller in the hole, Pep Guardiola opted to play Javi Martinez as a defensive-minded advanced midfielder, in front of Kroos and Philipp Lahm. It resulted in some decent attacks off balls won by Martinez high up the pitch, but was mostly ...
Germany boss Joachim Loew will send a weakened team to Wembley for the friendly against England on Tuesday. He plans to rest Arsenal's Mesut Ozil, and Bayern Munich players Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer.
Germany coach Joachim Low has seen three more players withdraw from his squad for the international friendly with England on Tuesday night. Midfielder Sami Khedira ruptured knee ligaments during the friendly draw with Italy on Friday and will miss out of the match at Wembley. He has been joined on the sidelines by captain Philipp Lahm and Bayern Munich team-mate Manuel Neuer, who have both returned to Germany rather than travelling on from Milan to London, while Mesut Ozil will head to the English capital, albeit not to feature on Tuesday night. Sunday Supplement panel on England v Germany The Arsenal midfielder did not train much prior to Friday night's 1-1 draw with Italy and Low has decided to allow him, as well as the Bayern duo, a rest. Bayern Munich can become Spain of club football, says Philipp Lahm
Bayern focus on treble mission The heavens opened up over Munich on Sunday afternoon but nothing could dampen the spirits ofFC Bayern München's supporters as their heroes returned home clutching the Uefa Champions League trophy. It was a day for celebrations as Bayern returned to Germany at around 17.30CET following their 2-1 victory against domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on Saturday. Gone were the painful memories of the club's 2010 and 2012 showpiece losses as Jupp Heynckes and his players touched down on home soil as European champions. Heynckes was first out of the aircraft amid heavy showers and ice-cold temperatures, before showing off the trophy with his captain Philipp Lahm. Around 30 different television crews and 80 Munich Airport staff members welcomed Bayern onto the runway, although the tired players did not have much to say after a long night of partying. "I went back to my room at six in the morning," said forward Franck Ribéry, who set up Arjen Robben for the winner. "I too ...

Robben joy at shedding 'loser' tag Arjen Robben says his winning goal in the Champions League final for Bayern Munich against Borussia Dortmund has avenged past heartbreak in his career. The 29-year-old had lost two previous European finals, missing a penalty in last year's defeat by his former club Chelsea, but hit the winner at Wembley. The Netherlands international was also on the losing side when Spain won the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa. "You don't want the stamp of a loser," said Robben after Bayern's 2-1 victory. "There was all the disappointment of last year but I personally also had the World Cup. That was three finals. "It wasn't so much pressure. I tried to make it into positive energy. I couldn't start thinking negatively, otherwise it would be too difficult. "Tonight I scored the goal. We did it and we can forget about the other things." Bayern took the lead in the all-German final when Robben pulled the ball back from the byeline for striker Mario Mandzukic to tap in from close rang ...

The captain and the hub of Bayern Munich deserve every bit of it..! Philipp Lahm & Bastian Schweinsteiger, after four long years of agony, what a moment! P.S - youth of Borussia Dortmund, bloody brilliant cup run to say the least! *bows down*
LONDON (AP) — Bayern Munich is trying to downplay being the favorite. While Borussia Dortmund is eager to play up its chances to pull off the upset. Even before the start of Saturday's Champions League final, the German rivals are at odds in their approach to the biggest game in club soccer. Bayern is approaching its third final in four years with the self-assured calm of a team in control after a season of dominance, while Dortmund is enjoying the role of underdog. Bayern winger Thomas Mueller summed up his side's mood on Friday, saying that the matchup is just "a normal Champion League game." "Of course you get goose bumps when you're on the pitch and we know what's at stake. We won't let it drive us crazy though," the 23-year- old said. Bayern captain Philipp Lahm felt the same way. "The players are the right age now, the right character. There's nothing against us winning tomorrow," said Lahm, who added that he wouldn't be surprised if Bayern reached a fourth final in five years next season. Dortmun ...

Jupp Heynckes tightens the screw on his Bayern Munich machine | Marcus Christenson Arsenal face a formidable side forged by a manager determined to go out in a blaze of glory by winning the Champions League Jupp Heynckes was not happy. The Bayern Munich manager had seen something he found unacceptable. Weisse Socken. White socks. Unbelievable. Had he not told the entire squad to wear black socks for this particular training session in Qatar? And yet there were Bastian Schweinsteiger and Toni Kroos in white socks. "We have a joint goal we are working towards," he barked at the players. "We need discipline. And that starts with having the same socks." The manager even wanted to fine the two players. The club captain, Philipp Lahm, was told to collect the money but in the end they arrived at a truce. Heynckes, however, had made his point. Schweinsteiger and Kroos, needless to say, wore black socks for the afternoon session. "Did our manager overreact? No, I think he did the right thing," said the Bayern chie ...

Why spain is the powerhouse of soccer? . . . . Two cities, three clubs. The world’s best XI of 2012 was comprised entirely of players from Barcelona (5), Real Madrid (5) and Falcao from Atletico Madrid. Or ‘Madrid 6 Barcelona 5’ according to Madrid-based sport paper AS, who prefer club and city one-upmanship. Not a single player who makes his living in the footballing powerhouses of Manchester, Munich or Milan made the XI. Not one who plays in Turin, Dortmund or Paris either. Casillas; Alves, Pique, Ramos, Marcelo; Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta; Messi, Falcao, Ronaldo are the chosen few, voted for by their peers from 49 players’ unions worldwide. It’s an incredible, if awkwardly named, FIFA/FIFPro Team, but it’s partly subjective and arguments will prevail. Why no Philipp Lahm, captain of Bayern Munich and Germany? What about Manchester City’s Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero or Vincent Kompany? Andrea Pirlo, Giorgio Chiellini or Gianluigi Buffon from Italy? There’s no Petr Cech or Ashley Cole from Chels ...
KNVB = DID YOU KNOW? Netherlands began life under Louis Van Gaal with a friendly against another country with which it shares a border - Belgium. A total of six players from Van Gaal's squad ply their trade in the Bundesliga, including Rafael van der Vaart and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (both pictured, right). Alaba, 20, is expected to miss six to eight weeks after suffering a stress fracture, though he will undergo further tests on Monday. Full-back Rafinha, meanwhile, tore ankle ligaments and is likely to be out for four to five weeks. The pair have not been included in the squad for the trip to China on Sunday, while coach Jupp Heynckes said Germany duo Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger will also remain at home to focus on "building up their fitness". Despite the setbacks, Heynckes was drawing the positives from the Napoli friendly. "I was pleased with the performance of my team over long stretches," he said. Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm claims Champions League defeat to Chelsea was unfair. But the reality is that Bayern were simple wasteful, they had more shot on goal but only 24 % on target while the Blues had 33% on target. Arjen Robben was the game's leading shooter with 15 shots, but he, too, was inaccurate with only six on target. Didier Drogba had five shots and two chances, scoring from one of them.

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm pre final: "I cannot see us having any problems [with beating Chelsea]". Oh well
finally the blues have broken the deadlock. BIGUP'S GUYS summary Moscow seems a long time ago now as the ghost of 2008 was buried by a penalty shoot-out win for the Blues. We seemed dead and buried when Bayern Munich took the lead after 82 minutes of a game they dominated in the face of some high-class Chelsea defending, but showing the resilience yet again that had taken us all this way to Munich, Didier Drogba netted his ninth goal in nine cup finals with two minutes left to play. Cech then saved a penalty, given away by Drogba in extra-time, and not converted by Arjen Robben, so 10 more penalties had to be taken to determine the destiny of the European Cup. It didn't start well as Juan Mata failed with the first but Cech saved one and Bastian Schweinsteiger struck woodwork before that man Drogba stepped up to win the competition for the first time for a London club. Dear Bayern Munich and fans, This letter isn't meant to be patronising. I'm thrilled to finally see Chelsea lift this trophy, of course, and I'm not going to be ashamed of that. But I find myself feeling sad it was you we beat to get there. Blues fans know as much as anyone the pain of coming so close and not making it - not two final losses in three years, but our litany of failure in the Champions League has been something approximating magnificent since 2003 - and I'm not sure I'd wish that upon my worst enemy, let alone you guys. Because, really, Bayern Munich areawesome. We've faced all sorts of teams this season, ranging from the eminently likeable (Napoli) to to the curiously deluded (Benfica) the objectively malevolent (Barcelona). Bayern have to be themost compelling combination of likeability, talent and playing style we've come across this year in any competition. Seeing some teams lose is funny. Seeing the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger , Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer devastated is not. I dou ...
Chelsea stunned Bayern Munich in a dramatic penalty shoot-out at the Allianz Arena to win the Champions League for the first time. Thomas Mueller's late header put Bayern on the brink of victory on home territory but Didier Drogba levelled things up with a bullet header at the death before coolly converting the decisive spot-kick. The tournament which gave Chelsea their greatest agony when they lost on penalties to Manchester United four years ago in Moscow has now delivered the greatest glory in their 107-year history. Juan Mata missed Chelsea's first penalty but David Luiz, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole were all successful. Philipp Lahm, Mario Gomez and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer were all on target for Bayern. The momentum shifted decisively when Cech denied Ivica Olic and Bastian Schweinsteiger hit the post to leave Chelsea on the brink and present Drogba with his moment of destiny.

Germany have named a 27-man preliminary squad for the European Championship. Joachim Low has named a familiar-looking party which also includes injured Arsenal stopper Per Mertesacker. Low admits that he and his staff have been in constant contact with Arsenal over Mertesacker - who is recovering from an ankle injury - and he will be joining them for the pre-tournament training camp in Italy. "We are in constant contact. He has been training with the team again. By flying with the team to Sardinia he must be at a competition level," he said. Low has also named two uncapped players in the shape of Schalke starlet Julian Draxler and Borussia Moenchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Mertesacker and Podolski named in Germany’s provisional squad for the Euros Posted on May 08, 2012 by admin The Germany manager Joachim Löw has named the 27 players in his provisional squad to play in the Euro 2012 tournament this summer, and although there is little surprise that Arsenal’s newest player Lukas Podolski is included in the squad. But the inclusion of Per Mertesacker is a little more surprising seeing that the big defender hasn’t made an appearance for Arsenal since February, but it would seem that Low is going to give him a chance to prove his fitness. There will be four players left out of the final 23-man squad so it will cost Low nothing if he doesn’t prove up to scratch. The squad will be meeting up this weekend at a training camp in Sardinia, but Manuel Neuer, Holger Badstuber, Jerome Boateng, Philipp Lahm, Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gomez won’t be joining them until a week later as they all play for Bayern Munich and need to be available fo ...

Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid 3-1 on penalties on Wednesday to book its place against Chelsea in the Uefa Champions League final following a memorable contest between two European football giant longtime European rivals. Bayern came to Madrid with a 2-1 lead, but Cristiano Ronaldo looked to have put the home side on its way to the final with two early goals, but just like its Spanish rival Barcelona the evening before, Madrid faltered and Arjen Robben's 27th-minute penalty leveled the score over two legs at 3-3. In the penalty shoot-out, Manuel Neuer saved from Ronaldo and Kaka to put Bayern on course after it had scored its opening two kicks, but counterpart Iker Casillas denied Toni Kroos and Philipp Lahm to drag Madrid back into it.
