More from John Johnston, who plays Sherlock Holmes in our upcoming adventure to see The Speckled Band at The Classical Theatre Company: Q: There have been quite a few incarnations of Holmes since his first publishing in 1887, both on the stage and in film as well as in literature. Do you find any of them particularly inspirational? J: Oh yes. Definitely. He is a singular character, to be sure, but has appeared in as many different mediums as one could imagine. At this point, I've had decades of research into Holmes, just by my personal affinity for his stories. I enjoy aspects of all of them that I've seen, from the Peter Cushing's interpretation to Basil Rathbone, all the way up to Benedict Cumberbatch's modern version. My personal favorite (and the one that most directly influences my interpretation of Holmes) is Jeremy Brett's performance. When I was growing up, my family would sit down and eat our Sunday night dinner and watch Brett's Holmes series episode-by-episode. His frenetic energy, coupled with ...

BEGINS NEXT FRIDAY! The year 2014 marks the centennial of the start of World War I. It began in July, of 2014, and would end in November, 1919. As with any “great war”, in was the subject of many films, from the silent era, to the present day. In this course, we will view, and discuss three films, shown in their entirety, released by Warner Brothers, between 1938 and 1941, in which this major global conflict was the main focus. In Edmund Goulding’s THE DAWN PATROL (1938), Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, and David Niven, are British flying aces, who contend with the harsh realities of air combat; in William Keighley’s THE FIGHTING 69th (1940), a loud-mouth braggart Jerry Plunkett (James Cagney) alienates his comrades, and officers, but Father Duffy (Pat O’ Brien), the regiment’s chaplain, has faith in Jerry. And, in Howard Hawks’ Sergeant York (1941), Gary Cooper (in an Academy Award winning performance) is the celebrated hillbilly sharpshooter, who is drafted in WWI, despite being a pacifist, b ...

Remembering the refined actor and swordsman Basil Rathbone (June 13, 1892 – July 21, 1967) on his birthday. One of the finest Golden Hollywood villains and heroes - from Errol Flynn's foe, to Arthur Conan Doyle's studious and famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. Starting out on the stage before 1920, he was a Shakespearian actor, and he made the leap to silent film in 1925. He returned to the stage periodically during his long career, played many radio shows, and appeared in films of many genres, even comedy spoofs such as The Court Jester (1956). In the first of the photos below: Taken by White Studio, Basil and Edna Best appear in the play, Mero. Thanks for letting me join. I loved Basil Rathbone but, having read every one of the Sherlock Holmes stories, My personal opinion is that Jeremy Brett is the perfect Sherlock Holmes and, to be fair, Edward Hardwicke was pretty much perfect as Dr Watson too!
English stage and screen actor William Claude Rains died on the 30th of May, 1967. Born in Camberwell, London, he grew up with what his daughter Jessica termed “a very serious Cockney accent and a speech impediment” but, after making his theatre debut at the age of 11 in Nell of Old Drury, RADA founder Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree saw huge acting talent in him, and paid for the elocution lessons necessary for him to become a professional actor. Rains later became a tutor at the Academy, where his students included John Gielgud, who later remarked, after the former had become an international star, “He was a great influence on me. I don't know what happened to him. I think he failed and went to America.” Rains was active in the London Scottish Regiment in the First World War, alongside fellow actors Basil Rathbone, Ronald Colman and Herbert Marshall. During his service he was involved in a gas attack, which left him virtually blind in one eye for the rest of his life. By the end of the conflict, he ha ...

Just answered a "Trivia Today" question (I get them every day) about who played the title role in the film "Lawrence of Arabia". Definitely one of the easier questions to answer but it reminded me how much I enjoyed the late Peter O'Toole's film debut (all his films, really). It's one of only a few DVDs I've actually purchased (in addition to "The Exorcist" and a collection of Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce). Also starred Omar Sharif, Anthony Quinn, Alec Guinness, Claude Rains, Jack Hawkins, and several other often-seen British actors (you'd recognize them if you saw them). David Lean was a terrific director ("Dr. Shivago", "Bridge Over the River Kwai", and others) and Maurice Jarre's musical score was perfect (he also wrote the score for "Dr. Shivago"; remember "Lara's Theme"?).
Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone appear to be having quite the sword fight.
David Copperfield 1935 American film based upon the Charles Dickens novel The Personal History, Adventures, Experience, & Observation of David Copperfield (Freddie Bartholomew) the Younger. A number of characters and incidents from the novel were omitted - notably David's time at Salem House boarding school, although one character he met at Salem House was retained for the film as a head boy at the school David attended after his aunt Betsey Trotwood(Edna May Oliver)gained custody of him. Here, in the run up to Armistice Day and the 100th anniversary of the start of hostilities, we've put together 40 other incredible facts about the 1914-1918 war that was meant to end all wars... 1. Officially a British soldier had to be 19 years old to serve overseas but many lied about their age. About 250,000 under-age boys served. The youngest was discovered to be just 12. 2. Average life expectancy in the trenches was about six weeks. Junior officers and stretcher bearers were some of the people most at risk. 3. During four years 25 million tons of supplies were shipped to the British forces on the Western Front including three million tons of food and five million tons of oats and hay for the horses. 4. As the war went on the amount of food given to soldiers was reduced. A common meal in the trenches was maconochie - a stew of turnips, potatoes and carrots. Other rations included bully beef and even Marmite. There was a small rum ration but tea tasted horrible thanks to the chloride of lime used to p ...

When screened for American Producer Joe Levine, Levine took the cigar from his mouth and growled-” Frederico, what da *** did that movie mean? ” Fellini shrugged –“I dunno”. 1971: Tor Johnson died of a heart attack at age 68. Swedish wrestler turned actor Tor’s preferred role was the bald eyeless zombie in classics like Plan Nine from Outer Space and Bride of the Monster. 1977: A small Westchester radio station WENW hired a thin, gawky, college grad as a DJ- Howard Stern. US radio would never be the same.
Working through the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films. "The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes" is actually kind of hilarious!
A Tale of Two Cities 1935 film based upon Charles Dickens' 1859 historical novel. The film stars Ronald Colman as Sydney Carton, Donald Woods and Elizabeth Allan. The supporting players include Basil Rathbone, Blanche Yurka, and Edna May Oliver. It was directed by Jack Conway. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Film Editing. The story is set in the French Revolution and deals with two men who are alike, not only in appearance, but in their love for the same woman.
Another whirlwind evening spent with good friends, a brilliant author and the Governor of Pennsylvania. Anyone who knows me knows that I love mystery, especially, British mystery. I own all the DVD'S of Sherlock Holmes, Basil Rathbone, as well as Jeremy Brett and Hercule Poirot, portrayed by David Suchet. Jack and I attended the Royal Oak Program at the Philadelphia Union League where the brilliant, Dr. Lucy Worsley, noted historian and Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces in England, discussed A VERY BRITISH MURDER, THE STORY OF A NATIONAL OBSESSION, her latest book. Lucy, has one of the most viewed historical series on the History Station in the US. She described some of the notorious crimes of the Regency and Victorian era. Jack and I ran in to Governor Corbett on our way out of our club and spent some time talking to him. Yes, my friends, "Life is Good."

Today is Monday, March 24, the 83rd day of 2014. There are 282 days left in the year. Today's Highlight in History: On March 24, 1989, the supertanker Exxon Valdez (vahl-DEEZ') ran aground on a reef in Alaska's Prince William Sound and began leaking an estimated 11 million gallons of crude oil. On this date: In 1765, Britain enacted the Quartering Act, requiring American colonists to provide temporary housing to British soldiers. In 1832, a mob in Hiram, Ohio, attacked, tarred and feathered Mormon leaders Joseph Smith Jr. and Sidney Rigdon. In 1882, German scientist Robert Koch (kohk) announced in Berlin that he had discovered the bacillus responsible for tuberculosis. In 1913, New York's Palace Theatre, the legendary home of vaudeville, opened on Broadway. In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a bill granting future independence to the Philippines. In 1939, "The Hound of the Baskervilles," the first Sherlock Holmes movie adaptation featuring Basil Rathbone as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famed dete ...
My top Sherlock Holmes incarnations are as follows: 1. Jeremy Brett - Jeremy's version which aired on PBS here in the US in the 80s and 90s was literally word for word what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote. Under-appreciated now Brett's version personifies Sherlock. 2. Benadict Cumberbatch - Though it kind of humps the shark at the end of series 3 Steven Moffat's Sherlock (portrayed by Benadict Cumberbatch) helps us to see how truly timeless Sherlock actually is and how easily he can lend himself to a mondern setting. He also works with a brilliant Watson who is not over-shadowed by Sherlock himself. 3. Basil Rathbone - An ironic actor who played sherlock many times and even inspired Disney's The Great Mouse Detective. He also worked with one of the better Watsons and would tragically refuse to play Sherlock after his Watson, Nigel Bruce, passed away. 4. Robert Downey Jr. - Though his version, from the recent Sherlock Holmes movies, doesn't follow any specific Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story and has some ...
In the same way Basil Rathbone is considered iconic as Sherlock Holmes in film, Richard Greene will always be Robin Hood to me!
Vincent Price Peter Lorre and Basil Rathbone were the greatest actors of the 1960's tell me your favorite of today?
Some Holmes buff/group admin I am. I had totally forgotten that noir/crime favorite Ida Lupino had the female lead in the first Basil Rathbone effort, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. First, the two going over lines on set. Second, boy doesn't that look just cry out, "The doors made me do it!"? (I can assure you that's not in this film). And Alan Marshall, who was in the film, sure looked a heck of a lot like Errol Flynn.
Correction - NOT born on this date in 1895, but on February 4, not 14. Sorry. The rest of my comments stand - Nigel Bruce, the fuddiest of all duddies, at least when portraying Dr. John Watson to Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes. Lucy Liu may be considerably better looking, but no one could play the bumbling twit like Nigel Bruce, in these films and many others from the 1930's and 40's.
Not necessarily my favourite Karloff movie, but one that is often overlooked, with an iconic cast and and a script that is actually quite witty. ''The Comedy of Terrors (1964) is an American International Pictures comedy horror film directed by Jacques Tourneur and starring Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Basil Rathbone, Boris Karloff, and (in a cameo) Joe E. Brown in his final film appearance. (Wikipedia quote)'' Happy Birthday Mr. Karloff, you were countless children's best friend in the dark.
I have discovered Sherlock Holmes from the BBC. I've been a bit of a Holmes addict since watching Basil Rathbone play him in the 70's. This new version with Benedict Cumberbatch is great!
Clifton Webb, Marlene Dietrich and Elizabeth Allen at a Hollywood party hosted by Basil Rathbone in 1935, the theme was the person you most admired." Dietrich chose Leda of the fable, and Allan as her escort dressed as Dietrich, Clifton well don't know who he's supposed to be lol, it was a gala event to remember..
Great picture! Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. My favourite and Watson team.
Watching season two and three. Some of the highlights are the introduction of Honey West, Nick Adams doing Marlon Brando, Basil Rathbone and Agnes Moorehead doing Hamlet and a spoof of the Playboy club with the real Hugh Heffner saying he just works there. LOL.
Reenacted the big Errol Flynn/Basil Rathbone sword fight from Robin Hood with 4. Totally winning at today
Benedict Cumberbatch: Easily the greatest Sherlock since Basil Rathbone...
It's a terrible shame but the sound you hear is Arthur Conan Doyle & Basil Rathbone spinning in their graves
Got a favorite Sherlock? Lots of actors have donned the deerstalker over the decades: John Barrymore (Drew's Grandpa), Basil Rathbone, Peter Cushing (Admiral Piett), Christopher Lee (Saruman), John Cleese (really?) , Charlton Heston (his partner wasn't an ape, either), Tom Baker (the 4th Doctor), and more recently Robert Downey, Jr., Johnny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch. Check out Wiki's full (?) list!

Humphrey Bogart, Aldo Ray and Mr' Sherlock Holmes himself Basil Rathbone, and oh yea Peter Ustinov, Great cast. It's a small story of three escapees from Devils Island and their interactions with a family at Christmas time in a French Caribbean town. oh and I forgot about Adolphe the Snake, who has an intricate part in the plot. And it grossed $3,000,000 in the box office back in the '50's. Watch it if you find it, you'll love it !!!
George Zucco (1886 – 1960) English character actor who appeared, almost always in supporting roles, in 96 films during a career spanning two decades, from 1931 to 1951. His best known film role was that of Professor Moriarty in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939), opposite Basil Rathbone.
Cor, Basil Rathbone was a bit of fox, wasn't he? Caught 10 mins of one of his Sherlock Holmes films this morning, fab.
Dusted this one off for a listen today... I recommend enjoying with whiskey & hot cider... and a bit of smoke, if available ;) cheers, Basil Rathbone Dickens...
Just realised is a dead ringer for Basil Rathbone. :)
It's the day to sit quietly and watch your favorite Christmas movie. I'm torn between the original "We're No Angels" (starring Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov, Aldo Rey, Basil Rathbone, and Leo G. Carrol) and "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians".

I don't remember a lot of riffs, but Basil Rathbone as Lodac is my favorite villain!
Need so much to go to bed, but hear Simon Templar in the background, not Roger or Ian Ogilvy, I'm sure it must be Basil Rathbone
In '56 Basil Rathbone stars in the “Scrooge” musical The Stingiest Man in Town
I'm gonna stuff myself full of as much "Quatermass"& Basil Rathbone Sherlock stuff over Xmas as I can get me mits on. My own TV Xmas prezzie
Thank you so much for the add! I've loved the Holmes stories since I was a kid. The first Sherlock Holmes films I ever saw were the ones with Basil Rathbone. Still when I read the stories, I always picture Rathbone as Holmes. I did like Peter Cushing, Jeremy Brett and a couple others. Always felt Ian Richardson was superb but a little underrated
Eating scotch eggs at 9.30pm watching Basil Rathbone and wondering when I'm going to get around to clearing out my wardrobe.
:Oh yes? I don't know that film, but maybe the photo is not Basil Rathbone then. In Brussels there's a wonderful filmmuseum:

There are some Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies on right now on TCM. A more than acceptable start to the day.
For all the modern day versions of none of them beat the late great South African Basil Rathbone's portrayal of the character IMO
