Today in Baseball History -- April 1 -- from Mary Landers ... 1914 -- Rube Waddell, who once struck out a record 349 batters in one season, dies of tuberculosis at age 37. The eccentric Hall of Fame right-hander compiled a 193-143 (.574) record along with an ERA of 2.16 during his 13 seasons spent with the Colonels, A's, Pirates and Browns. 1937 -- The Reds sell Babe Herman to the Tigers. The 34-year outfielder, batting .300 for his new team, will appear in only 17 contests with Detroit before effectively retiring from the game, although he will return to play briefly for the war-time Dodgers in 1945. 1938 -- Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, not a fan of Branch Rickey's farm system, grants free agency to a group of nine Cardinal minor leaguers that includes Pete Reiser. A reported gentlemen's agreement, that has Brooklyn signing and hiding the 19-year old in the low minors to be traded back to St. Louis at a later date, doesn't work when Brooklyn manager Leo Durocher disobeys orders allowing the phen ...
*** THIS DATE IN HISTORY! MARCH 14 *** March 14, 1932 Cincinnati Reds acquire catcher Ernie Lombardi, outfielder Babe Herman, and infielder Wally Gilbert from the Brooklyn Dodgers for catcher Clyde Sukeforth and infielders Tony Cuccinello and Joe Stripp. Herman will bat .324 in one season in Cincinnati following the trade (he will later return to the club for two seasons), but Lombardi makes the trade a steal. The eventual Hall Of Famer Lombardi will bat .311 in 10 seasons in Cincinnati, winning a batting title and MVP Award in 1938. March 14, 1993 Cincinnati Reds announce that Schottzie 02, the St. Bernard dog owned by Reds president Marge Schott, is being banned from the field at Riverfront Stadium for the season. And the rest. March 14, 1996 Cleveland Indians selected Nigel Wilson off waivers from Cincinnati Reds. March 14, 1998 Cincinnati Reds signed Joey Eischen as free agent. March 14, 2004 Cincinnati Reds released John Vander Wal. March 14, 2005 Cincinnati Reds released Dave Elder.
FUN FACT OF THE DAY : On July 31, 1935, Kitty Burke was sitting in the stands at Crosley Field during a game between the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals when she began heckling the players. She then strode to the on-deck circle, took Babe Herman's bat and proceeded to "pinch hit". She ended up grounding out to first base; however, the appearance was purely informal, and the umpires did not count this as an official at bat or out, as she was not on the roster.
Was there today and will be happy to watch them clinch tomorrow. Babe Herman jersey will be over the Chase sign.

Today in Baseball History -- June 23 -- from Mary Landers 1915 -- In his major league debut, Bruno Hass tosses a complete game, but loses to the Yankees at Shibe Park, 15-7. The 24-year old southpaw, known as Boon, issues 16 walks during the nine-inning contest establishing a post-1900 major league record. 1917 -- Red Sox reliever Ernie Shore replaces an ejected Babe Ruth, who had walked the only batter he faced, and retires the next consecutive 26 batters. The only base runner is thrown out trying to steal second. 1930 -- The Dodgers get twelve consecutive hits in a 19-6 win over the Pirates at Forbes Field. Two of the dozen hits in the eight-run sixth inning include a pair of homers hit by Brooklyn outfielder Babe Herman. 1933 -- With his 2-for-5 performance at the plate in Washington's 7-3 victory over Chicago, Joe Cronin sets a major league record by collecting 15 hits in four consecutive games. The Senators' player-manager's recent offensive output also includes two four-hit games and another with fi ...
