SUNDAY BOOK REVIEW THE NEW YORK TIMES ‘The Georgetown Set,’ by Gregg Herken By JEFFREY FRANKNOV. 25, 2014 Gregg Herken had what must have seemed like a terrific idea — to revisit the large drama of the Cold War era by setting it on a small stage: Georgetown, the former port town on the Potomac River that became a celebrated Washington neighborhood. After all, its inhabitants once included such central figures as Dean Acheson, W. Averell Harriman and Allen Dulles, as well as journalists who not only got scoops from their neighbors but sometimes influenced and even participated in the events that they covered. Although the Cold War ended (if it has ended) with the collapse of the Soviet empire, Herken’s focus is on the period between the conclusion of World War II and 1975, when the United States pulled out of Vietnam. During those years, America was engaged by a world at least as unnerving as today’s, facing crises in Berlin, Korea, Cuba and elsewhere, along with various domestic red scares. Herk ...
At the same time Bush and the Harrimans were profiting from their Nazi partnerships, W. Averell Harriman was serving as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's personal emissary to the United Kingdom during the toughest years of the war. On October 28, 1942, the same day two key Bush-Harriman-run businesses were being seized by the U.S. government, Harriman was meeting in London with Field Marshall Smuts to discuss the war effort. Denial and Deceit While Harriman was concealing his Nazi relationships from his government colleagues, Cornelius Livense, the top executive of the interlocking German concerns held under the corporate umbrella of Union Banking Corporation (UBC), repeatedly tried to mislead investigators, and was sometimes supported in his subterfuge by Brown Brothers Harriman.

"Bush family album: Adolph and Prescott; A LOVE STORY Prescott Bush and his son, former President George Herbert Walker Bush. When the Remingtons, duPonts, Rockefellers, Mellons, J.P. Morgan, George Herbert Walker, Samuel Bush and Prescott Bush, as well as other representatives of America’s corporate elite decided to overthrow the government of the United States in 1934, they recruited retired Marine General Smedley Butler to lead it. Butler was a two-time winner of the Medal of Honor, a man with a first-rate mind. He intended from the outset to infiltrate the group and turn them in. He did so and Congress held hearings, (the McCormack-Dickstein Hearings) headed by future Speaker John McCormack. The group had planned to replace President Franklin Roosevelt with someone who would at first be called an “Assistant to the President” to take over the day-to-day operations of government. Remington would supply the arms, Smedley would get the “bonus army”–a half million World War I veterans–to marc ...

What more? Dubyah's family was intimately involved in the creation of the Third Reich! In 1919, George Herbert Walker had organized W.A. Harriman & Co which merged with the British Brown Brothers in 1931. In 1924, Averell Harriman (Skull & Bones, 1913) and Fritz Thyssen, the German industrialist who began funding Hitler in 1923, set up the Union Banking Corp in New York to handle funds supplied to it through Thyssen's Dutch bank for American investment. Prescott Bush, who had been an officer of the W.A. Harriman bank since 1926, was a director of the Union Banking Corp from 1934 through 1943. According to government documents, "all of the shares of the Union Banking Corp., were held for the benefit of members of the Thyssen family." The federal government did not crack down on the Bush-Harriman/Nazi operation until 1942. After the war, Congressional investigation revealed that Fritz Thyssen's German Steel Trust, Germany's largest industrial corporation [which interlocked with Union Banking Corporation] pr ...
WHO THEY REALLY ARE! Bushes And The Military-Industrial Complex: George H. Walker and Samuel Prescott Bush were the dynasty's founding fathers during the years of and after World War I. Walker, a St. Louis financier, made his mark in corporate reorganizations and war contracts. By 1919, he was enlisted by railroad heir W. Averell Harriman to be president of Wall Street-based WA Harriman, which invested in oil, shipping, aviation and manganese, partly in Russia and Germany, during the 1920s. Sam Bush, GW BUSH's other great-grandfather, ran an Ohio company, Buckeye Steel Castings, that produced armaments. In 1917, he went to Washington to head the small arms, ammunition and ordnance section of the federal War Industries Board. Both men were present at the emergence of what became the U.S. military-industrial complex. Prescott Bush, the Connecticut senator and grandfather of GW BUSH had some German corporate ties at the outbreak of World War II, but the better yardstick of his connections was his directorshi ...
In 1919 Bush was introduced by W. Averell Harriman to his business partner, George Herbert Walker. Later that year, Bush was introduced to Walker's daughter, Dorothy. The couple married in August, 1921. Bush and his new wife moved to Columbus, Ohio, and went to work for his father's family business.

The 1983 War Scare Soviet "Huffing and Puffing?" "Crying Wolf?" "Rattling Pots and Pans?" or "A Real Worry That We Could Come into Conflict through Miscalculation?" Washington, D.C., May 16, 2013 – Soviet General Secretary Yuri Andropov warned US envoy Averell Harriman that the Reagan administration's provocations were moving the two superpowers toward "the dangerous 'red line'" of nuclear war through "miscalculation" in June of 1983. Andropov delivered this warning six months before the 1983 "War Scare" reached its crux during the NATO nuclear release exercise named Able Archer 83, according to Harriman's notes of the conversation posted for the first time today by the National Security Archive (www.nsarchive.org). The meeting provides important, first-hand evidence of Soviet leadership concerns about a possible US threat. But other documents included in this posting suggest that not all Soviet political and military leaders were fearful of a US preemptive first strike, but may rather have been "rattli ...

Late in 1972, W. Averell Harriman (known at that time as the "grand old man of the Democrats"), Establishment strategist and CFR member, told Milton Katz (also a CFR member and Director of International Studies at Harvard): "We've got to get off our high horses and look at some of those southern governors." Carter was mentioned, and Katz informed Rockefeller, who had actually met with Carter in 1971, when they had lunch in the Chase Manhattan's Board of Director's dining room, and he was impressed with the fact that Carter had opened trade offices for the state of Georgia in Tokyo. In February, 1973, while former Secretary of State Dean Rusk (a Bilderberger) was having dinner with Gerald Smith (U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Non-Proliferation Matters), Rusk suggested that Carter would be a good candidate for the Commission. In April, while Robert Bowie (former professor of International Affairs at Harvard, who later became Deputy Director of the CIA), George S. Franklin (Rockefeller assi ...

W. Averell Harriman (Nov 15, 1891 – July 26, 1986) American Democratic Party politician, businessman, and diplomat. He was the son of railroad baron E. H. Harriman. He served as Secretary of Commerce under President Harry S. Truman and later as the 48th Governor of New York. He was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1952, and again in 1956 when he was endorsed by President Truman but lost to Adlai Stevenson both times. Harriman served President Franklin D. Roosevelt as special envoy to Europe and served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union and U.S. Ambassador to Britain. He served in numerous U.S. diplomatic assignments in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. He was a core member of the group of foreign policy elders known as "The Wise Men."

Never mind that we turn to government to provide or subsidize the most essential of services, such as public safety, health, education and transportation. Lay aside the fact that government's failures are ultimately our own, since most Americans pay too little attention to public affairs to make thoughtful judgments about what the fixes may be. Having grown up with a sense of patriotism and respect for public service instilled while gazing up at the four faces on Mount Rushmore, I imagined my minor tasks as an employee of the people of the United States as being part of a great continuum that began with George Washington himself. After Army service in World War II, he went to work for Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, and became a trusted fiscal and policy adviser to Dewey's successors, W. Averell Harriman and Nelson Rockefeller. Among other roles, he later advised world leaders, including President Lyndon B. Johnson and India's Jawaharlal Nehru, and after earning a doctorate taught public policy at the college l ...
Inspire and lead us, Governor Congratulations on your election. Time to walk, or run or gallop or saunter, but never to limp. Ask every agency head to appraise his agency immediately and to report his suggestions for improvement to you. Let them know that any hint of dishonesty, or greed, or arrogance will be reason for instant dismissal. Experts can be the enemy of fresh ideas. [...] don't mistake activity for accomplishment, or procedures for results. An ancient Chinese proverb tells us to dig a well before we are thirsty. Compromise is the heavy industry of politics. Take time to leave the stage, join the audience, and look at yourself and your political performance from a distance. Give special attention to social problems. Increases in crime, pollution, congestion, exploitation and despair are often hidden behind upbeat economic statistics.
