Down set points, the real Serena Williams stood up to dispatch of former world number two Vera Zvonareva.Serena Williams overcame a first-set scare to trump Vera Zvonareva 7-5 6-0 in their Australian Open second-round clash on Thursday. Williams twice trailed by a break in the first set, and was down set point three times, before progressing in one hour 25 minutes on Rod Laver Arena. Zvonareva, a former world number two, was causing the current world number one all sorts of problems, rallying with depth and consistency early. But once Williams awoke from her slumber, she was unstoppable - despite landing just five of a possible 14 first serves in the second set. The 18-time major winner finished with 32 winners to Zvonareva's 11, while they both hit 24 unforced errors. A Williams double-fault on break point gave Zvonareva the early break, with the top seed concerned the elements were bothering her - the sun at the far end of the court (broadcast wise) was positioned in the path of her ball toss. LONDON–The streak is over for American tennis player Sloane Stephens. Maria Kirilenko, ranked 109, beat her 6-2, 7-6 in the first round at Wimbledon. “I’m sad my streak is over,” Stephens told the press after the match. “Today was just a tough day.” Stephens’ made the second week at six Grand Slams, which was the longest streak for women tennis players. She shot to international fame when she defeated Serena Williams at the 2012 Australian Open. Kirilenko is a surprise win. She missed the first three months due to injury, which included the Australian Open. She only won one out of five matches prior to Wimbledon, but the way she played against Stephens made that difficult to believe. Kirilenko, who was ranked tenth in her career before her injury, performed smooth and steady throughout the match. Stephens fought off five match points when she was down 5-6 to force a tiebreak. But Kirilenko had the upper hand and won it on a forehand. “She definitely played well,” Stephens said when asked ...

The 2014 Australian Open Finalists Li Na and Dominika Cibulkova are on the Stadium court at the Sony Open Tennis Tournament right now. The winner of this match will face WTA World # 1 Serena Williams in the Final.
Serena powers into final Miami - World number one Serena Williams has defeated Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-3 on Thursday to reach the final of the Miami hardcourt tournament. Williams extended her dominance over the fourth-seeded Russian and now leads their career head-to-head 16-2. The American has won 15 straight matches against Sharapova, whose two victories in their rivalry came back in 2004. In the final Williams will be gunning for a second straight Miami crown and a seventh overall. She'll face the winner of Thursday night's match between world number two Li Na of China and 10th-seeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova. Li has won all six of her meetings with Cibulkova, including January's Australian Open final and a quarter-final clash at Indian Wells this month. For Sharapova it was another disappointing finish in Miami, where she has reached five finals but never lifted the trophy.
Great semifinal action tomorrow as the Sony Open goes into the homestretch. Just watched Li Na win against Wozniacki to come through to the semis. Li Na, playing a little more aggressive and effectively coming to the net more than usual, set up a rematch of this year's Australian Open final against Cibulkova. The other interesting semi is Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. Serena, being the favorite, goes into the match with 14 straight wins over Maria. Seems like all the top players are playing stronger round-to-round and finding their form at the right time.

Australian Open 2014 Number 1 Serena Williams was the hardcore favorite but that didn't happened due to back injury where she lost in the fourth round. It gets better I believe if my girl Serena goes out earl all the top ladies should go out. What do you know the next round number 3 Maria Sharapova goes out. In the Quarter Finals defending champ world number 2 Victoria Azerenka goes out. Then in the Semifinals world number 5 goes out. That left world number 4 Li Na and world number 20 in the final which Li Na won finally her first title. THE BEST NEWS IS THAT SERENA WILLIAMS IS STILL NUMBER 1 IN THE WORLD. I LOVE YOU SERENA WILLIAMS.
Tennis MELBOURNE — China’s Li Na stormed to her second Grand Slam title on Saturday, battling past underdog Dominika Cibulkova to win the Australian Open and give another huge boost to Asian tennis. The 31-year-old fourth seed’s 7-6 (7/3), 6-0 win crowned her the champion on her third attempt after losing the 2011 and 2013 finals, adding to the French Open title she won three years ago. In doing so, she became the oldest winner of the women’s title, surpassing Margaret Court who was 30 when she became champion in 1973. The Chinese star also joins an exclusive list of just seven other players to win a Grand Slam at 30-plus, with her name now in the history books alongside greats such as Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert and Serena Williams. “I finally got here,” she said after Evert awarded her the trophy, as she praised her husband Jiang Shan and coach Carlos Rodriguez. “Thanks Carlos. He always believed that I could do well.” The win pushes her one place higher in the wor ...
Li Na Wins Australian Open In 3rd Trip To Final Seven months after giving retirement serious thought, Li Na made it third time lucky in an Australian Open final with a 7-6 (3), 6-0 win over Dominika Cibulkova to become the oldest women's champion here in the Open Era. Li, who turns 32 next month, lost finals to Kim Clijsters in 2011 and to Victoria Azarenka last year. In between, she won the 2011 French Open in one of the many firsts she's established for Chinese tennis. Widely popular at Melbourne Park for her funny post-match interviews and wise cracks about her husband and his snoring, Li didn't disappoint the Rod Laver Crowd in her first victory speech. She first thanked her agent, Max, ''for making me rich,'' her coach Carlos Rodriguez and then her husband, former coach and constant traveling companion, Shan Jiang. She told him he was ''even famous in China.'' ''So thanks for him give up everything just traveling with me to be my hitting partner, fix the drinks, fix the racket. So thanks a lot, you a ...

Serena enters Indian Wells Serena Williams’ name is on the entry list for the Indian Wells tournament for the first time since she vowed in 2001 to never return reports AP. The Williams sisters were scheduled to meet in the semi-finals that year, but 20 minutes before the match, Venus withdrew and fans booed them. Serena went on to win her second title there, but she and Venus said they would not return, and they have skipped the last 12 events. Their father later said he heard racial slurs from the crowd during the final. Tournament director Steve Simon said on Wednesday that while it’s too soon to know whether Serena Williams will play or not, officials are pleased to see her name on the entry list. During the Australian Open, Williams said she considered a return to Indian Wells after watching a movie about the late South African President Nelson Mandela, inspired by his message of reconciliation. MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Even in a Grand Slam as unpredictable as this year's Australian Open, the names in the women's semifinals may still prompt head-scratching among casual followers of tennis. With the three biggest stars of the women's game falling one by one - top-seeded Serena Williams, followed by Maria Sharapova and two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka - the door has opened for a first-time winner at Melbourne Park. Only fourth-seeded Li Na has won a Grand Slam before - the 2011 French Open. Fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland was the 2012 Wimbledon finalist, but had never been beyond the quarters in Melbourne until she chipped, lobbed and sliced Azarenka off the court in a remarkable display of shot-making on Wednesday. Dominika Cibulkova, a diminutive Slovakian who dispatched Sharapova in the fourth round, has made just one Grand Slam semifinal before, while 19-year-old Eugenie Bouchard is a only playing her fourth major - she didn't even make it out of qualifying at ...

Eugenie Bouchard is the real deal. The 19 year old Canadian from Montreal plays, as if she's played the game for 40 years, and is years in maturity beyond a typical 19 year old - on the tennis court. Minutes ago, she continued her rampage at the Australian Open, this time beating Ana Ivanovic (Wta of Serbia, who beat the "unbeatable" Serena Williams (Wta # 1), Saturday. Look for Eugenie to become the second youngest winner of this Major (Martina Hingis is the youngest - 16 years, 1997), wow!
Tension between America's Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens is expected to intensify after footage emerged of what appeared to be Stephens celebrating Williams' shock exit from the Australian Open.
Enjoying watching Australian Open on tv. So happy Roger Federer is moving like a 21-year-old and smacking his backhand. Only Maria Sharapova and Milos Raonic have fallen off the bandwagon among my faves. Ana Ivanovic played a game as pretty as she is to beat the top-seed, Serena Williams, who looked invincible up to this point. My other fave, Eugenie Bouchard, the 19-year-old Canadian, has just started playing Ivanovic. So confused who to cheer for. Go Ana! Go Genie! And yes, good luck to Stanislas Wawrinka with his match with Djokovic. Keep pounding those radar-sharp backhands!

Sharapova out, Nadal, Murray win Two-time defending champion Victoria Azarenka saw another of her main adversaries crash out of the Australian Open on Monday, while top-ranked Rafael Nadal and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray faced tougher-than-expected matches to advance to the quarterfinals at Melbourne Park. Maria Sharapova joined Serena Williams as fourth-round casualties, leaving Azarenka a potentially easier run to the women’s final, AFP reports. Sharapova was beaten by No. 20 Dominika Cibulkova in the match on Rod Laver Arena immediately before Azarenka defeated Sloane Stephens, the last remaining American in the singles draw. Nadal won three tough sets against Kei Nishikori, while Murray wasted four match points in the third set – including two in the tiebreaker – before dominating the fourth set against lucky loser Stephane Robert of France.
