Aung San Suu Kyi MP AC (born 19 June 1945) is a Burmese opposition politician and chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD) in Burma. Rakhine State (Rakhine pronunciation ; formerly Arakan) is a Burmese state. Situated on the western coast, it is bordered by Chin State in the north, Magway Region, Bago Region and Ayeyarwady Region in the east, the Bay of Bengal to the west, and the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh to the northwest. 2.0/5

Burma: New Violence in Arakan State Satellite Imagery Shows Widespread Destruction of Rohingya Homes, Property (New York) – The government of Burma should take immediate steps to stop sectarian violence against the Rohingya Muslim population in Arakan State, in western Burma, and ensure protection and aid to both Rohingyas and Arakanese in the state, Human Rights Watch said today. New satellite imagery obtained by Human Rights Watch shows extensive destruction of homes and other property in a predominantly Rohingya Muslim area of the coastal town of Kyauk Pyu – one of several areas of new violence and displacement. Human Rights Watch identified 811 destroyed structures on the eastern coastal edge of Kyauk Pyu following arson attacks reportedly conducted on October 24, 2012, less than 24 hours before the satellite images were captured. The escalation of conflict in Kachin State, communal violence in Arakan State, the continuing detention and torture of political prisoners, land confiscation due to development projects, restrictions on freedom of association and assembly are among the poor Human Rights conditions stated in his report. The scale of such Human Rights violations, in spite of the reforms initiated by the government, emphasizes the necessity of the role of the Special Rapporteur. FROM IRRAWADDY, Suu Kyi’s Rohingya Remarks Anger Bangladesh The Bangladeshi government has slammed comments made by Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi last week, when she called clashes between Arakanese Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims in Arakan State an “international tragedy” and said that illegal crossing of the shared border with Bangladesh had to be stopped, “otherwise there will never be an end to the problem.” The Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry said in a statement that “There is… no reason to ascribe Bangladesh nationality to these people,” referring to the Rohingya, a stateless group rejected by both countries.
