Hey ATL friends. The Dept of Transportation is recommending all Monday evening activities be canceled in order to keep the roads clear for service vehicles to pre-treat the roads following rush hour Monday evening. Please cooperate so we can avoid a repeat of two weeks ago. I've canceled my evening plans...you can too. CNN: The city of Atlanta and Georgia say they're being proactive this time, unlike two weeks ago when the storm snuck up on Gov. Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, resulting in citizen inconvenience and outrage. The governor apologized to the public and promised to handle things differently next time. "I'm the governor, the buck stops with me," he said. On Sunday the Georgia Department of Transportation said it would start treating roads with sand and salt after the Monday evening rush hour. Supplies from southern Georgia are being brought to the Atlanta metro area, said transportation department spokeswoman Natalie Dale. Deal also gave the National Guard a warning order, an adva ...
Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 2-3-14 MARTA mostly just kept moving Buses, trains also faced challenges. By Andria Simmons As the roads and interstates that snake through metro Atlanta sat paralyzed in last week’s frigid grip, MARTA, for the most part, kept moving. No, the mass transit authority wasn’t unscathed by the three days of ice and snow. Trains ran less frequently because many MARTA employees couldn’t make it in through the epic gridlock, and bus service was canceled entirely one day because it was unsafe to go out on the road. “Staff doesn’t have a supersecret highway to drive to work on,” said MARTA Chief Operating Officer Rich Krisak. But while leaders in Georgia — from Gov. Nathan Deal to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed to Georgia Emergency Management Director Charley English — are under a microscope over their handling of the crisis, MARTA decision-makers are largely out of the spotlight. “The ice storm was a difficult set of circumstances for every governmental entity throughout m ...
Reed battles back against criticism on national stage with round of network interviews By Greg Bluestein and Katie Leslie The Atlanta Journal-Constitution A frustrated Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed struck a defiant tone in television appearances Thursday morning, battling back against criticisms he was ill-prepared for Winter Storm Leon and calling out TV networks for broadcasting images of stranded drivers outside city limits. His appearances on The Today Show and MSNBC comes a day after NBC’s meteorologist Al Roker roundly criticized the mayor and Gov. Nathan Deal for what he called “poor planning” ahead of the well forecast storm which left untold thousands stranded in their cars on icy interstates and forced children to stay overnight in schools. Reed took pains to define his jurisdiction from that of the state and schools, noting his lack of control over interstates and school closings. Asked by Matt Lauer whether he had the best information possible ahead of the storm, Reed said “It’s not solel ...
