There'sA Sheep Born Every Second Itwas reported by the Associated Press that last July, near the town ofGavas, eastern Turkey, one sheep among a large flock walked to theedge of cliff and jumped to its death.  A second sheep quicklyimitated the first, also leaping off the cliff to its death. Then a third sheep followed.  Then a fourth.  Then afifth.  The AP reported that "stunnedTurkish shepherds, who had left the herd to graze while they hadbreakfast, watched as nearly 1,500 others followed, each leaping offthe same cliff." Whenit was all over, 450 sheep had died and 1,050 survived, but onlybecause those sheep that jumped later were saved as the pile of sheepgot higher and the fall more cushioned.  Imagine the peerpressure that last sheep must have felt.  Surely 1,499 sheepcan't be wrong, can they? Thereis no such thing as a sheep that possesses leadership qualities. All are born followers.  Consequently, any sheep that doesanything out of the ordinary, regardless of how foolish it is,becomes a ...
Soldier says she faced harassment over Muslim name Associated Press - 12 mins ago RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Sgt. 1st Class Naida Hosan is not a Muslim — she's a Catholic. But her name sounded Islamic to fellow U.S. soldiers in Iraq, and they would taunt her, calling her "Sgt. Hussein" and asking what God she prayed to. So before deploying to Afghanistan last year for her second war tour, she legally changed her name — to Nadia Christian Nova. This did not solve her problems. Instead, matters escalated. Nova complained to her superiors about constant anti-Muslim slurs and jokes. She says they responded with a series of reprisals intended to drive her out of the Army, leading her to consider suicide. "My complaints fell on deaf ears every time," said Nova, 41, a member of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg, N.C. "Any time I would say something about it I was treated like I didn't know what I was talking about or that I'm an *** or that I was a Muslim sympathizer. It was just a very lon . ...

Hundreds dead, tragedy in Bangladesh This week over 300 died when an eight-story building that housed a garment factory collapsed in Savar district on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The death toll continues to rise as rescuers dig through the heaps of twisted metal and debris. It is possible that over 3,000 workers to have been in the crowded factory when it collapsed, many are still trapped inside the prison of debris suffering from injuries, but also dehydration and heat. One rescuer stated: “They are alive, they are trapped, but most of them are safe. We need to cut through debris and walls to bring them out.” Remaining trapped survivors face dehydration and exposure, with daytime temperatures soaring to 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) and about 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight. Many have been freed only at great cost. One woman told Associated Press on Friday: “First a machine fell over my hand, and I was crushed under the debris. … Then the roof collapsed o ...

Thoughts? Typically, African-American students across the country are involved in speaking out against the display of the Confederate Flag, but at one South Carolina university, a young Black man sees the flag as a positive symbol and is speaking out in support of his own right to hang it proudly. "When I look at this flag, I don't see racism. I see respect, Southern pride," 19-year-old Byron Thomas, an African-American student at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, told the Associated Press. "This flag was seen as a communication symbol" during the Civil War. Thomas sparked a campus controversy when he decided to display a Confederate Flag in his dorm window, but was asked to remove it by university officials in late November after about two dozen students complained. Although Thomas initially removed the flag, the school has since sent an email to students and staff stating that "the university cannot and will not prohibit these flags or other symbols that our students choose to display," citing ...

Feds: Many causes for dramatic bee disappearance By SETH BORENSTEIN | Associated Press – 3 hours ago WASHINGTON (AP) — A new federal report blames a combination of problems for a mysterious and dramatic disappearance of U.S. honeybees since 2006. The intertwined factors cited include a parasitic mite, multiple viruses, bacteria, poor nutrition, genetics, habitat loss and pesticides. The multiple causes make it harder to do something about what's called colony collapse disorder, experts say. The disorder has caused as much as one-third of the nation's bees to just disappear each winter since 2006. Bees, especially honeybees, are needed to pollinate crops. The federal report, issued Thursday by the Agriculture Department and the Environmental Protection Agency, said the biggest culprit is the parasitic mite varroa destructor, calling it "the single most detrimental pest of honeybees." The problem has also hit bee colonies in Europe, where regulators are considering a ban on a type of pesticides known as ...
US Navy gets their first squadron of drones On Thursday the Navy inaugurated the Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 35, or the “Magicians,” a fleet made up of both manned and unmanned vehicles that will accompany US warships into battle across the world. Included in that fleet are eight traditionally piloted helicopters and a yet to be determined number of Fire Scout MQ-8 B drones, each capable of being operated at a distance of 110 miles away and maintaining flight for half-a-day straight. Until this week, the Pentagon has only allocated unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, to the US Air Force. According to the AP, most Navy drones in use until this point have been operated by contractors overseen by military personnel. The Navy’s brand new fleet will be unveiled at the Naval Air Station North Island base on Coronado, near San Diego, California on Thursday, but the Associated Press quotes Lt. Aaron Kakiel as saying that the “Magicians” will only start appearing on one of the force’s new litt ...

UN report wants moratorium on killer robots Associated Press - 43 mins ago UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Killer robots that can attack targets without any human input "should not have the power of life and death over human beings," a new draft U.N. report says. The report for the U.N. Human Rights Commission posted online this week deals with legal and philosophical issues involved in giving robots lethal powers over humans, echoing countless science-fiction novels and films. The debate dates to author Isaac Asimov's first rule for robots in the 1942 story "Runaround:" ''A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm." Report author Christof Heyns, a South African professor of human rights law, calls for a worldwide moratorium on the "testing, production, assembly, transfer, acquisition, deployment and use" of killer robots until an international conference can develop rules for their use. His findings are due to be debated at the Human Rights Council in Geneva on ...

U.S. doctors write enough prescriptions each year to provide antibiotics to 4 out of 5 Americans, a new study shows. That's so many that the drugs probably are being overused, experts told the Associated Press (AP). Excess use helps bacteria to become resistant to the drugs. The new study used a national drug database. Numbers come from 2010. In that year, health care professionals wrote 258 million prescriptions for antibiotics. The population was about 309 million. That's about 833 prescriptions for every 1,000 people. But the numbers varied greatly from state to state. West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee had the highest rates. About 1,200 prescriptions were written for every 1,000 people in those states. In Alaska, Oregon and California, the numbers were 600 or below. Experts said Southern states may have more infections than other states. They do have the highest rates of diabetes. Diabetics tend to have more infections than others. What Is the Doctor's Reaction? How many antibiotic prescriptions do ...
Food stamps accounted for 72 BILLION DOLLARS of our tax funds in one year Obama Discovers Reelection Super Weapon: Food Stamps! And we pay for it. Many millions of people are still scratching their heads over how Obama won the 2012 presidential election in the face of so many contrary polls. To those who credit his victory to simple witchcraft there are many who would agree. But it may have been much simpler than voodoo and witchcraft; it appears to be just a case of numbers. And yes, I am counting those numbers where the polls show more recorded votes for Obama than there were total registered voters, which I gather are “still being investigated.” But the numbers I’m talking about are those such as the ones shown by FoxNews.com online as reported by the Associated Press (huge friends of Obama) where they showed in an article titled, “In a first, black voters turnout rate passes whites”. That is a little more significant than just a “first”; it is an overwhelming feat based on nothing m ...

It has much better sound; a much better sound than digital. My old lady's got one. My kids have got them. I say, 'Look me up this.' Or, 'Oh I like that. Check me that.' I know what these things can do. I'm not totally anti-them." Richards says that he accepts that the music business is digitally driven -- but he's still not crazy about it: "They're sucked into it and they can't get out of it, nor can we; so is the public ...
Horse slaughter back in the USA: New Mexico horse slaughter plant rounds third base to open. PLEASE TAKE THE ACTION! Please call the Secretary of Agriculture's Office at (202) 720-3631 and respectfully request the government to reinstate the ban on horse slaughter. Americans don't eat horsemeat. The meat will be sent to Europe for human consumption. Horse slaughter may very well be happening in the United States in the near future. On Tuesday, the Associated Press in a telephone interview with Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, reported the United States Department of Agriculture has made final inspections at the Roswell plant making certain the process will be handled according to regulations. In 2006 Congress eliminated the funding for inspections at horse slaughter plants, thus shutting all domestic horse slaughterhouses, however horses from the United States continue to travel to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered for human consumption. The funding was slipped into the 2011 fiscal budget which bro ...

The sheriff said Kidd’s partner, Jamal Gray, later told authorities Kidd was in fair condition after surgery at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis. Gray said he sleeps with the 9 mm Glock under his pillow and usually locks it up during the day. But on Sunday, Kidd’s 2-year-old son found it and picked it up, causing it to discharge. The boy and a 3-week-old baby were not wounded. The Children’s Services Department was called to look into the children’s welfare.

The companies remain competitors. The family's U.S. business was founded in the Boston area in 1928 by their father, Armenian immigrant Avedis Zildjian, and a great-uncle. Conclave to elect next pope opens amid uncertainty Associated Press - 6 hrs ago VATICAN CITY (AP) — Cardinals enter the Sistine Chapel on Tuesday to elect the next pope amid more upheaval and uncertainty than the Catholic Church has seen in decades: There's no front-runner, no indication how long voting will last and no sense that a single man has what it takes to fix the many problems. On the eve of the vote, cardinals offered wildly different assessments of what they're looking for in the next pontiff and how close they are to a decision. It was evidence that Benedict XVI's surprise resignation has continued to destabilize the church leadership and that his final appeal for unity may go unheeded, at least in the early rounds of voting. Cardinals held their final closed-door debate Monday over whether the church needs more of a manager to clean up the Vatican's bureaucratic mess or a pastor to inspire the 1.2 billion faithful in times of crisis. The fact that not everyone got a chance to speak was a cl ...

But those gains were meager compared with the spectacular construction projects that oil riches spurred in glittering Middle Eastern cities, including the world's tallest building in Dubai and plans for branches of the Louvre and Guggenheim museums in Abu Dhabi.

The grandfather of writer Gore Vidal. Habib rattles off a few details before surrendering: "Let me look him up. Do we need this in Florida? Guns for Hire sounds like the wild west. South Dakota enacts law allowing armed teachers and staff on school grounds According to an Associated Press (AP) report, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard signed a bill allowing the state’s school districts to arm teachers and other personnel with guns. The bill’s main sponsor, Representative Scott Craig, said that he had received messages from a growing number of school board members and administrators who back it. Craig said rural districts do not have the money to hire full-time law officers, so they are interested in arming teachers or volunteers.
'God particle': Confirmation is 'achingly close' By SETH BORENSTEIN | Associated Press – Wed, Mar 6, 2013 WASHINGTON (AP) — Physicists in Italy said Wednesday they are achingly close to concluding that what they found last year was the Higgs boson, the elusive "God particle." They need to eliminate one last remote possibility that it's something else. The long theorized subatomic particle would explain why matter has mass and has been called a missing cornerstone of physics. With new analyses, scientists are closer to being certain they found the crucial Higgs boson. But they want to be 99.9 percent positive, said Pauline Gagnon, a physicist with the European Center for Nuclear Research. Last July scientists with the world's largest atom smasher, the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border, announced finding a particle they described as Higgs-like, but wouldn't say it was conclusively the particle. Now thousands of checks show them even closer. "It looks more and more like a Higgs ...

Conclave chatter dominates Vatican soccer league By ANDREW DAMPF (Associated Press) | The Associated Press – 8 hours ago ROME (AP) -- Vatican-sponsored soccer league matches went ahead as scheduled this weekend on a hill overlooking St. Peter's Basilica. For the 16 teams of seminaries, missionaries and oratories, however, the pre- and postgame talk veered from purely sports and spiritual topics to the coming conclave to elect a new pope. The conclave directly affected the tournament, with the coach of a Brazilian team absent because he was chosen to drive two cardinals to Assisi on Sunday - one of the final days of respite before the cardinals enter the conclave Tuesday. ''It didn't go so well today,'' Aldemir Francisco Belaver, the captain of the Collegio Pio Brasiliano seminary said after a 4-1 loss to Redemptoris Mater, a team featuring seminarians and priests with the Mater Neocatechumenal movement. ''It wasn't easy without our coach.'' Redemptoris fans - which consisted exclusively of priests and s ...
NEWS FROM WWW.ONIBOKUN.COM - March 10, 2013 Hostage killings a new, dangerous turn for Nigeria - By JON GAMBRELL | Associated Press – KANO, Nigeria (AP) - Radical Islamic fighters killed seven foreign hostages in Nigeria, European diplomats said Sunday, making it the worst such kidnapping violence in decades for a country beset by extremist guerrilla attacks. Nigeria's police, military, domestic spy service and presidency remained silent over the killings of the construction company workers, kidnapped Feb. 16 from northern Bauchi state. The government's silence only led to more questions about the nation's continued inability to halt attacks that have seen hundreds killed in shootings, church bombings and an attack on the United Nations. The latest victims were four Lebanese and one citizen apiece from Britain, Greece and Italy. Britain and Italy said all seven of those taken from the Setraco construction company compound had died at the hands of Ansaru, a previously little-known splinter group of the . ...

in Pakistan: Shi'ite leaders call Sunni jihad attacks genocide And the Sunni Pakistani leaders don't want to rein in the jihadist attackers. Yet to examine the ideology behind these murderous attacks would be "Islamophobic." "Shiite Leader: Sectarian Attacks Are 'Genocide,'" by Kathy Gannon for the Associated Press, March 9: Pakistan's minority Shiite Muslims have started using the word "genocide" to describe a violent spike in attacks against them by a militant Sunni group with suspected links to the country's security agencies and a mainstream political party that governs the largest province. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a group of radical Sunni Muslims, who revile Shiites as heretics, has claimed responsibility for dozens of attacks throughout Pakistan. Linked to al-Qaida, it has been declared a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S., yet it operates with relative ease in Pakistan's populous Punjab province, where Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and several other violent jihadi groups are based. The violence against Shii ...
Nation Ansaru: We’ve killed 7 foreign hostages Posted by: Our Reporter on March 10, 2013 in Featured, News • Victims from Britain, Lebanon, Greece, Italy and the Phillipines • Why we killed hostages –sect The Islamic group, Jama’atu Ansaril Muslimina fi Biladis Sudan better known as Ansaru, confirmed at the weekend that it executed the seven foreign construction workers abducted last month in Jama’are, Bauchi State. The victims—three Lebanese citizens and one each from Britain, Greece, Italy and the Philippines – are all employees of Setraco, a Lebanese construction company. Ansaru, a splinter group from Boko Haram, said on its website that it executed the seven Christians because Nigerian and British forces had killed some Muslims while trying to free the hostages. Army spokesman Col. Mohammed Yerima told the Associated Press he had no information about any Nigerian/British military operation. The announcement of the execution was accompanied by screen shots of a video purporting to show ...
The suicide rate among U.S. troops continues to climb, despite a sharp drop in combat activity. Some experts fear the problem will grow even worse this year. New Pentagon numbers obtained by the Associated Press show military members committed suicide at a rate of almost one per day in 2012, 349 last year among active-duty troops. That's up from 301 the year before and exceeds the Pentagon's own internal projection of 325. The Pentagon has made it a priority but is admittedly struggling with what Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and others call an epidemic. "They're really trying to put their fingers on what exactly it could be," said retired Army Maj. and CBS military analyst Mike Lyons in an interview Tuesday with Seattle's Morning News. "There's really no silver answer, no silver bullet so to speak." Last year's total is the highest since the Pentagon began closely tracking suicides in 2001. It exceeds the 295 Americans who died in Afghanistan last year, by the AP's count. According to Lyons, many troops ...

I agree...these zero tolerance policies are BS and its a lazy cop out by lazy principals who use them. Kids' suspensions renew debate over zero tolerance By By MICHAEL RUBINKAM, Associated Press – Feb 18, 2013 Waiting in line for the bus, a Pennsylvania kindergartener tells her pals she's going to shoot them with a Hello Kitty toy that makes soap bubbles. In Maryland, a 6-year-old boy pretends his fingers are a gun during a playground game of cops and robbers. In Massachusetts, a 5-year-old boy attending an after-school program makes a gun out of Legos and points it at other students while "simulating the sound of gunfire," as one school official put it. Kids with active imaginations? Or potential threats to school safety? Some school officials are taking the latter view, suspending or threatening to suspend small children over behavior their parents consider perfectly normal and age-appropriate — even now, with schools in a state of heightened sensitivity following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Ele ...
This is the Associated Press story that just came across the wire down here at the Times-Record in Fort Smith, Ark. . . . DES MOINES -- Riley Francis scored 20 points and Boyden-Hull shook off its early shooting woes to beat Storm Lake St. Mary's 49-45 Friday night and win its second straight Class 1A boys basketball championship. Boyden-Hull (25-3) built a seven-point lead early in the fourth quarter and held off a St. Mary's charge led by sharp-shooting guard Luke Lenhart. Brandt Van Roekel added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Comets and made a critical block late in the game. Colin Bolkema and J.C. Koerselman each scored eight points, and Koerselman made a key hustle play during the run that put his team ahead to stay. Boyden-Hull scored the first six points of the fourth quarter and that gave the Comets just enough of a cushion. Koerselman made a big play for the Comets when he dove into the St. Mary's bench to bat the ball off a St. Mary's player and give his team possession. He then fed Van Roeke ...

Greenfield - Freshman Carly Graverson started Franklin's rally, and junior Morgan McCuen finished it for a stunning 58-53 girls basketball victory over Oak Creek on Thursday. The Sabers closed out the Division 1 sectional semifinal on an 18-4 run, and Graverson and McCuen combined to score all the points to send their team to a state-qualifying game against Milwaukee Riverside on Saturday. Franklin was ninth in the final area rankings by the Journal Sentinel and is 21-4 after winning its 10th straight game. "We do not give up," Franklin coach Tony Kathrens said. "We don't do it. I've coached teams that have. Last year might have been one of them. But this year, we don't ever get too rattled." Oak Creek (23-2), No. 1 in the area and No. 2 in the last Associated Press state poll, had a 23-game winning streak and held a 10-point lead early in the final quarter. But shortly before Katie Finn's basket gave the Knights a 48-38 lead with 7 minutes 40 seconds left, senior point guard Morgan Kokta injured her righ ...
Associated Press changes guidelines on mental illness BY ILIA BLINDERMAN In the wake of the Newtown shootings, the media have had a field day speculating about the shooter’s mental illness. Immediately, calls emerged to reign in gun access for the mentally ill. Dr. Mehmet Oz, by no means an expert on mental illness, came on CNN and waxed scientific about the shooter’s condition. The frenzy reached its apex in a letter written by Liza Long, entitled “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother,” where the mother of a boy with severe behavioral issues proceeded to conflate her son’s fate with that of the shooter. The lack of nuance afforded to the topic of mental health was ignorant, shameful and bordering on vile. The mental health lobby, it seems, fails to carry quite the same heft as the National Rifle Association. In a welcome development, the Associated Press has now issued a set of guidelines to address coverage of mental illness. “When is such information relevant to a story? Who is an authoritative sourc ...

Lion killed intern as she was cleaning enclosure By By TRACIE CONE and GOSIA WOZNIACKA, Associated Press – 15 hours ago DUNLAP, Calif. (AP) — Authorities said Thursday they believe a lion killed a 24-year-old volunteer at a Central California animal park after it escaped from a feeding cage and attacked her while she was cleaning its larger enclosure area. Fresno County Coroner David Hadden said Dianna Hanson died instantly when the 550-pound lion broke her neck, apparently with a swipe of a paw. Investigators believe the 5-year-old male African lion used a paw to lift a partially open door that was meant to keep him in a cage and out of the enclosure while Hanson cleaned, Hadden said. "The lion had been fed, the young woman was cleaning the large enclosure, and the lion was in the small cage. The gate of the cage was partially open, which allowed the lion called Cous Cous to lift it up with his paw," Hadden said. "He ran at the young lady." Hadden said Hanson was talking with a co-worker on a cellpho ...
UN sanctions may play into North Korean propaganda By FOSTER KLUG and DAVID GUTTENFELDER | Associated Press – 6 mins ago * Email0 * Share25 * * Share0 * * Print * In this March 7, 2013 photo released by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) and distributed March 8, 2013 by the Korea News Service, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, center, uses binoculars to look at the South's territory from an observation post at the military unit on Jangjae islet, located in the southernmost part of the southwestern sector of North Korea's border with South Korea. Mar 07, 2013 Associated Press | by Edith M. Lederer and Hyung-Jin Kim UNITED NATIONS - The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Thursday for tough new sanctions to punish North Korea for its latest nuclear test, and a furious Pyongyang threatened a nuclear strike against the United States. The sanctions drafted by North Korea's closest ally, China, and the United States send a powerful message that the international community condemns the ballistic missile and nuclear tests - and repeated violation of Security Council resolutions. "Adoption of the resolution itself is not enough," China's U.N. Ambassador Li Baodong said. "We want to see full implementation of the resolution." Li also urged calm and a resumption of the stalled six-party talks aimed at denuclearizing the Korean peninsula. "The top priority now is to defuse the tensions, bring down heat ... bring the situation back on the track of diplomacy, on negotiations." Immediately before the vote, an unidentified spokesman for Pyongyang's Foreign . ...

Afghanistan: U.S.-NATO to Stop Reporting Number of Taliban Attacks March 6th, 2013 Via: Wired: One of the major metrics for the decade-long Afghanistan war is seriously flawed. Rather than fix the problem, the U.S.-NATO military command in Kabul has decided that you simply shouldn’t see the data. Late last month, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) conceded that it misreported the 2012 statistics on Taliban attacks. Its explanation was that a data-entry error had discounted attacks reported by Afghan forces — so much so that a statistically insignificant change in the level of so-called “enemy initiated attacks” became a seven percent decline from 2011 levels. ISAF’s response, the Associated Press recounts, is to end public reporting on enemy-initiated attacks. It’ll still record attack levels, according to spokesman Jamie Graybeal, but it won’t publish any of the data it collects — all because it’s losing confidence in the veracity of its information. As Afghan forces tak ...
First Lady's Anti-Obesity Campaign Having an Effect Michelle Obama's campaign against childhood obesity appears to be prompting changes meant to improve children's eating habits and help them maintain or achieve a healthy weight. For example, millions of schoolchildren now eat vegetables from salad bars in school lunchrooms and children's meals at Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants include a side of fruit or vegetables and a glass of low-fat milk, the Associated Press reported. The first lady launched her "Let's Move" campaign in February 2010. On Wednesday, she began a two-day promotional tour with stops in Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri. She's also been promoting the program on TV shows, on the radio, and in public service announcements. "We're starting to see some shifts in the trend lines and the data where we're starting to show some improvement," Mrs. Obama told SiriusXM host B. Smith in an interview broadcast Tuesday, the AP reported. "We've been spending a lot of time educating and re-ed ...
Medicare Pays Billions for Poor Nursing Home Care Nursing homes that failed to meet quality of care standards received $5.1 billion in payments from Medicare in 2009, according to a report released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' inspector general. In some cases, the failure to meet those standards resulted in dangerous and neglectful conditions for patients, the Associated Press reported. The investigators estimated that for every one in three times a patient was admitted to a nursing home that year, they ended up in facilities that did not meet the basic care requirements stipulated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). In one out of five nursing home stays, patients' health issues weren't addressed in their care plans. In other cases, patients received therapy they didn't require. The investigators said this benefited the nursing homes financially because they were reimbursed at a higher rate by Medicare, the AP said. "These findings raise concerns about w ...

Senator ends long floor speech blocking CIA pick By RICHARD LARDNER | Associated Press – 4 hrs ago WASHINGTON (AP) — A tea party senator from Kentucky used an old-style filibuster lasting nearly 13 hours to block Senate confirmation of John Brennan's nomination to be CIA director. Sen. Rand Paul ended his filibuster shortly after midnight, but Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, also a Kentucky Republican, said he would continue to oppose Brennan's confirmation and try to keep the debate going. After Paul yielded the floor, Sen. *** Durbin, D-Ill., filed a motion to cut off debate on Brennan's nomination and bring it up for a vote. Paul ended his lengthy speech with a joke. He said that he was tempted to go another 12 hours and try to break former South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond's filibuster record of 24 hours, but he needed to use the bathroom. "I discovered that there are some limits to filibustering and I'm going to have to go and take care of one of those in a few minutes," Paul said. But . ...

The real invasion of Africa is not news A full-scale invasion of Africa is under way. The United States is deploying troops in 35 African countries, beginning with Libya, Sudan, Algeria and Niger. Reported by Associated Press on Christmas Day, this was missing from most Anglo-American media. The invasion has almost nothing to do with "Islamism", and almost everything to do with the acquisition of resources, notably minerals, and an accelerating rivalry with China. Unlike China, the US and its allies are prepared to use a degree of violence demonstrated in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Palestine. As in the cold war, a division of labour requires that western journalism and popular culture provide the cover of a holy war against a "menacing arc" of Islamic extremism, no different from the bogus "red menace" of a worldwide communist conspiracy.
Alaska legislature strips salmon stream protection in way that will help mining industry SEAFOOD.COM NEWS [Associated Press] by Becky Bohrer - March 6, 2013 The Alaska House has passed a measure that critics say could hurt public participation in state permitting decisions. The 23-14 vote late Monday followed debate on water rights and whether to amend the bill to allow Native entities to apply for water reservations, along with federal or state agencies and political subdivisions. The vote on that amendment was tied at 18-18, with Rep. Peggy Wilson, R-Wrangell, seemingly agonizing over how to cast her vote. The House took a short break, and when the vote was held on the amendment again, Wilson was no longer a deciding vote but part of the majority in voting against the amendment. HB77, from Gov. Sean Parnell, is aimed at improving the permitting process in Alaska and seeks to build upon efforts in recent years to make the process more efficient. The measure is extensive, dealing with issues such as land ...

US scientists report big jump in heat-trapping CO2 Carbon dioxide levels rose by second highest rate; reaching global warming limits unlikely By Seth Borenstein, AP Science Writer | Associated Press – 7 hrs ago. WASHINGTON (AP) -- The amount of heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the air jumped dramatically in 2012, making it very unlikely that global warming can be limited to another 2 degrees as many global leaders have hoped, new federal figures show. Scientists say the rise in CO2 reflects the world's economy revving up and burning more fossil fuels, especially in China. Carbon dioxide levels jumped by 2.67 parts per million since 2011 to total just under 395 parts per million, says Pieter Tans, who leads the greenhouse gas measurement team for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That's the second highest rise in carbon emissions since record-keeping began in 1959. The measurements are taken from air samples captured away from civilization near a volcano in Mauna Loa, Hawaii. “Life span declines for some U.S. women,” By Mike Stobbe, Associated Press, New York , Herald, Tuesday, 03.05.13, Pg. A2. A new study offers more compelling evidence that life expectancy for some U.S. women is actually falling, a disturbing trend that experts can’t explain. The latest research found that women age 75 and younger are dying at higher rates than previous years in nearly half of the nation’s counties – many of them rural and in the South and West. Curiously, for men, life expectancy has held steady or improved in nearly all counties. The study is the latest to spot this pattern, especially among disadvantaged white women. Some leading theories blame higher smoking rates, obesity and less education, but several experts said they simply don’t know why. Women have long outlived men, and the latest numbers show the average life span for a baby girl born today is 81, and for a baby boy, it’s 76. But the gap has been narrowing and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Preve .. ...

Speaker Boehner's office issued the following statement, "We are monitoring the situation, and stand ready to work with the President on any reasonable solution. We have invited him to join us over the next days in the caverns of the Shenandoah Valley. We find the best course of actions is to clear our heads, meet as a caucus, and spend time caving."

It's 'Duck Dynasty' season as A&E hit flies high Associated Press By FRAZIER MOORE | Associated Press – 1 hour 4 minutes ago NEW YORK (AP) — When "Duck Dynasty" returned for its third season last week, it was greeted by an audience of 8.6 million viewers. Pretty good for an A&E reality series about bearded bayou brethren who manufacture duck calls and love to go bird hunting. Except that's not what "Duck Dynasty" really is. Viewers who have ducked this show thus far, assuming it's just another mocking redneck display on the order of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," have it all wrong. And they're missing out. Nor, by the way, is this a show that has much to do with the duck-call business (life has many distractions for the Robertson clan), nor is it a show that dwells on people killing animals (are you listening, Morrissey?). Instead, "Duck Dynasty" (airing two half-hours at 10 p.m. EST Wednesday) is a warm and witty family show that is more akin to a classic sitcom than it is to the likes of "Buckwild." Ty ...
Mexican police have confiscated an improvised cannon that they say was used to fire packages of marijuana across a border fence into California. The makeshift cannon was made of plastic pipe and powered by compressed air sourced from an old car engine, police in the border city of Mexicali said. The device was able to fire cylinders packed with up to 30 pounds of pot. The cannon was discovered on Tuesday after U.S. officers told Mexican police that they had been confiscating a large number of drug packages that appeared to have been fired over the border, the Associated Press said. It's not the first time drug traffickers have used a cannon to transport marijuana across the border. In December, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials recovered more than 30 cans of marijuana scattered in Yuma, Ariz., near the Colorado River. According to NBC, an investigation of the area "determined that the cans were fired from about 500 feet away with a pneumatic-powered cannon" and that a "carbon-dioxide tank was f ...
Gwadar Port pain awaits China: - Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has formally handed over the country's prized port at Gwadar to China. State-run China Overseas Port Holdings Limited will purchase all the shares in Gwadar Port from the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) and its local partners under a deal approved by Pakistani government on January 30. PSA sold 60% of shares in the the port, while Aqeel Kareem Dedhi (AKD) Group and the National Logistic Cell (NCL) controlled by the Pakistani army sold their 20% stakes. According to the Star-Gazette, the latest worry for the automotive experts: that drivers might be lulled into thinking they can drive faster because newer speedometers read up to 120, 140 and even 160 MPH. If I may ... if you run across someone that stupid, pleze take away their keys AND driver's license (send same to their current guardian or parent) and call them a cab! STAT! In the Associated Press (Tom Krisher) article, Mr. Fawaz Baltaji of Yazaki North America is quoted as saying, "People really want to see higher numbers. It is indicative of a more powerful engine. There's a marketing pitch to it." What people? Morons? 6-year-olds? Pot-heads? Surely no one of driving age thinks that bigger numbers on the speedometer is related to horsepower under the hood. That's just patently stupid. [Gee whiz I wish I had the patent on stupid ... I could retire to my island tomorrow!]

Who is Barry Obama II aka Barry Hussein Soebarkah etc. As WND has reported, the Associated Press released Obama’s school registration form from St. Francis Assisi School in Jakarta show him listed officially as Barry Soetoro, an Indonesian citizen. WND has also reported that in a passport amendment submitted Aug. 13, 1968, Ann Dunham, Obama’s mother, identified her son with an Indonesian surname, Barack Hussein Obama II Soebarkah. She asked the State Department to drop him from her U.S. passport, bolstering evidence Barack Obama Jr. became a citizen of Indonesia when he moved to the Southeast Asian nation with his stepmother and stepfather in the late 1960s. Until Dunham’s passport amendment surfaced in State Department documents released July 29, the name “Soebarkah” had never been referenced or documented in any discussion of Obama in the public record. Violent start in Kenyan election; police killed By RODNEY MUHUMUZA | Associated Press – 3 hrs ago NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Five years after more than 1,000 people were killed in election-related violence, Kenyans on Monday began casting votes in a nationwide election seen as the country's most important — and complicated — in its 50-year history. Police issued alerts late Sunday of impending attacks, and the violence began even before the voting. Police in the coastal city of Mombasa reported a 2 a.m. attack by a gang of dozens; early reports indicated several officers — perhaps four or five — were killed. Multiple factors indicated violence was likely: The police said late Sunday that criminals were planning to dress in police uniforms and disrupt voting in some locations. In addition, intelligence on the Somali-Kenya border indicated Somali militants planned to launch attacks; a secessionist group on the coast threatened — and perhaps already carried out — attacks; the tribes of the top two ...
Interfaith Outreach in Egypt: Muslims throw firebombs at police, try to storm church in search of woman suspected of converting to Christianity Muhammad said: "Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him" (Bukhari 9.84.57). The death penalty for apostasy is part of Islamic law according to all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence. Yet Muslim spokesmen such as Harris Zafar, Mustafa Akyol, Salam al-Marayati, M. Cherif Bassiouni, and Ali Eteraz (among many others) have assured us that Islam doesn't punish apostasy. I am confident that Zafar, Akyol, al-Marayati, Bassiouni, and Eteraz are making their way to Luxor as we speak, so as to explain to these enraged Muslim mobs that they are getting Islam all wrong, wrong, wrong. I am not a Crook! Posted on March 30, 2010 by Teevtee Well actually I really am not a crook, outside of trying to shoplift a fruit roll up when I was about 12 (and being caught doing so) crime has never been my thing. But I’m not talking about myself; I’m talking about one of the most infamous presidential quotes ever. It was near the end of 1973, November 17th to be exact and Richard Nixon was deeply embroiled in the Watergate scandal. The accusations against Nixon were mounting when he took the podium to address 400 managing editors from the Associated Press. Defiantly President Nixon proclaimed, “People have got to know whether or not their President is a crook. Well, I’m not a crook.” A few months later he would become the first and only president to resign from office. Not everyone believed Nixon’s declaration This line has been repeated many times since then, parodied in movies and TV shows and in many ways became a lasting legacy of the Nixon Administration. However what has been ne ...

GOP Governors Continue Caving In to ObamaCare Mandates Republican governors once so ferocious in their fight against ObamaCare now seem content to roll over and play dead. Perhaps their new agreeable attitude is inspired by the fact that President Obama was reelected in November while their own political futures remain in jeopardy. As the Associated Press reported last Sunday, “nearly two dozen GOP governors elected in 2009 and 2010 could face the voters again.” The conciliatory spirit among the GOP executives was strong at the annual winter meeting of the National Governors Association held February 22-25 in Washington, D.C. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (shown), once one of the most brazen bulldogs in the Republican kennel, reflects the new pragmatism prevalent among the GOP governors in comments he made at the governors meeting. "People may agree or disagree with my position on this social issue or that social issue, but as long as I'm not rubbing it in their face all the time and instead talking ...

But in pledging his "unconditional reverence and obedience" to the next pope, Benedict XVI took a critical step toward ensuring that his decision to break with 600 years of tradition and retire as pope doesn't create a schism within the church. It was also a very personal expression of one of the tenets of Christian tradition that dates back to Jesus' crucifixion: obedience to a higher authority. In the two weeks since Benedict announced he would resign, questions have mounted about how much influence he would still wield and exert over the new ...

Thirty-five years ago, she was just an ingénue on a soap opera scheduled for cancellation. Sound familiar? Back then, TPTB hired maverick executive producer Gloria Monty to save GH, and she did, like Rambo, lifting up Francis’ character to the stratosphere with a theater actor named Tony Geary (Luke). Francis told Associated Press in a February 22nd interview that Monty changed GH for the better. When Monty took it over, she worked a miracle, made ratings happen, and saved GH from cancellation. “Cut to today, and all of the shows are losing some popularity. Then they bring in [new executive producer] Frank Valentini. What led up to the shooting and killing spree by Kip Kinkel at Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon on Thursday 21 May 1998? What led him to kill his parents? These are two of the major questions that many people are asking since that fatal day that left 4 people dead and 22 others injured. William McCall, an Associated Press writer says, "that there may be no good explanation." He concludes that despite whatever influence violence in our movies, television, and video games may have upon our youth, "some kids are just born to be bad." I personally don't believe that this is a correct answer. It does, however, have a strong Biblical or religious aspect to it. It addresses the concept of "original sin", in that we are all born in sin, but it doesn't answer the question why this particular youth did what he did, and that the vast majority of other youth don't react in this way. The other conclusion which William McCall's explanation presents is that it's God's fault, because this particular child was ...

By:Jason StraziusoThe Associated Press, Published on Wed Feb 27 2013   NAIROBI, KENYA—Dozens of shack homes have been burned to the ground in recent weeks in Mathare, Nairobi’s most dangerous slum. Families are moving into zones controlled by their own clans, fearful of attacks between the tribes of Kenya’s top two presidential candidates. ‘We will set you on fire’ Kenya on Monday holds its first presidential election since the 2007 vote devolved into months of tribal violence that killed more than 1,000 people and displaced 600,000 from their homes. In a hopeful sign, this year’s presidential candidates pledged at a weekend prayer rally to accept the outcome of the election and ensure violence doesn’t again break out. But the government-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights on Wednesday released a long list of physical attacks, hate speech and cases of ethnic intimidation Kenya has seen in recent weeks, exposing an undercurrent of tribal tension. How budget cuts could affect you A look at how the cuts could affect government operations and you By Pauline Jelinek, Associated Press | Associated Press – 8 minutes ago Email 8 Print Automatic spending cuts scheduled to take effect Friday are expected to touch a vast range of government services. The carrier and its 5,000-person crew were to leave for the Persian Gulf on Feb. 8, along with the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg. Veterans' funerals at Arlington National Cemetery could be cut to 24 a day from 31, meaning delays in burials for troops from past wars. Troops killed in action in Afghanistan will be the priority — they are usually laid to rest within two weeks, Army spokesman George Wright said. The Scourge by Rex Ellingwood Beach Coming down coast from the Kotzebue country they stumbled onto the little camp in the early winter, and as there was food a plenty, of its kind, whereas they had subsisted for some days on puree of seal oil and short ribs of dog, Captain and Big George decided to winter. A maxim of the north teaches to cabin by a grub-pile. It was an odd village they beheld that first day. Instead of the clean moss-chinked log shelters men were wont to build in this land, they found the community housed like marmots in holes and burrows. It seemed that the troop had landed, fresh from the States, a hundred and a quarter strong, hot with the lust for gold, yet shaken by the newspaper horrors of Alaska's rigorous hardships and forbidding climate. Debouching in the early fall, they had hastily prepared for an Associated Press-painted Arctic winter. Had they been forced to winter in the mountains of Idaho, or among Montana's passes, they would have prepared simply and effectively. Here, how ...

Just a little info for the blind Obama supporters out there.here's a little food for thought: Progressives and the Liberal Media are bashing the NRA and it's CEO Wayne LaPierre for the suggestion made in his speech today that trained armed guards be placed in every school in the country. The Democratic governor's bill would increase supervision and drug treatment programs for inmates upon release and reduce the number of parolees who are returned to prison for minor violations. A main provision would mandate that non-violent offenders be released six months early into supervised programs. The bill also provides for one year of mandatory supervision for violent offenders after their regularly scheduled release. Thousands of Drones to be Launched in U.S. It's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's… a drone. Get ready, America. Drones are no longer something that happens in other countries. The U.S. is on the verge of having thousands of drones deployed in our skies, raising major concerns about privacy, safety and civil liberties. "The FAA… forecasts an estimated 10,000 civilian drones will be in use in the U.S. within five years," reports Associated Press, February 14. "The Defense Department says the demand for drones and their expanding missions requires routine and unfettered access to domestic airspace, including around airports and cities, for military testing and training… "And the FAA has granted several hundred permits to universities, police departments and other government agencies to use small, low-flying drones. For example, the sheriff's department in Montgomery County, Texas, has a 50-pound ShadowHawk helicopter drone intended to supplement its SWAT team. "The sheriff's department hasn't armed its dr ...

Father Of French Montana Affiliate Lil Poopy Investigated By Child Welfare Officials The father of nine-year-old rapper Luie “Lil Poopy” Rivera Jr., who’s linked with Bad Boy Records/Maybach Music Group artist French Montana, has found himself under investigation due to the content featured in several music videos from the young artist. According to the Associated Press, police in Brocktown, Massachusetts have requested that child welfare officials investigate any possible instances of child abuse or neglect in the home or Rivera and his family. The music video to Lil Poopy’s “Stay Schemin (Remix)” seems to have been the primary motivator in the investigation against the young rapper’s father. In the video, the fourth grader is seen slapping a woman’s behind and performing on stage with a champagne-wielding French Montana. On top of his various music videos, Lil Poopy has also released his Coke Ain’t A Bad Word mixtape which features remixes to “Pop That,” “Cashin Out,” and more.

The idea makes him laugh. "I don't think anybody was ever gonna put me in like 'Winter's Bone' anyway," the 32-year-old actor said in a recent interview. "You know what I mean? I don't think like if they were making a very dramatic, serious movie, they were gonna think, 'You know, I really like Max Greenfield, but Schmidt is just ... it's too much of a THING to put him in that movie.'" He even took the bit further. "I don't think they're trying to put me in 'Saving Private Ryan. 'We're looking for Ryan. (Pauses.) Is that Schmidt?'" he said. "I'm fine. I'm getting to do everything I want to do on this show." "New Girl" stars Zooey Deschanel as a young woman with three male roommates, played by Greenfield, Jake Johnson and Lamorne Morris. Messi scores as Barca rebounds for Madrid clash (JOSEPH WILSON,Associated Press) 2013/02/24 — BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Barcelona's Lionel Messi extended his league- record scoring run to 15 straight games in a 2-1 win over Sevilla on Saturday, three days before the Spanish leaders' Copa del Rey clash with Real Madrid. Barcelona striker David Villa canceled out Alberto Botia's opener with a header in the 52nd before Messi grabbed the winner in the 60th with his league-best 38th goal through 25 rounds. Madrid, meanwhile, needed Kaka to score his first goal in the Spanish league this season and cue Gonzalo Higuain's late winner to come from behind and win 2-1 at last-placed Deportivo La Coruna. With the Spanish title all but secured, Barcelona's priorities are the Champions League — where they lost the first leg of the round-of-16 clash at Milan 2-0 last week — and the domestic cup. It meets Madrid at Camp Nou Stadium on Tuesday for the second leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal. The first leg in Madr ...

The subject of a conversation was Johnny Donovan, the WABC DJ who later became Rush Limbaugh's announcer and is sometimes referred to as the "Voice Of God". Here is my Johnny Donovan story - He was Large Sarge at WHVW in Poughkeepsie and he was why I got into radio. It was November of 1963 and I was working a job at a hospital just to have something to do during the day. My night job was as a drummer for a Four Seasons sound alike band called The Thunderbirds. The day gig was back in the hospital stockroom where we kept track of the incoming medical supplies and got them to where they needed to be. We did not have a TV back there but the radio was on all day. I had always thought I might like radio but hadn't really done anything about it. Large Sarge was doing a noon to 5 shift on WHVW Live 95 when the AP wire service went absolutely nuts. I still remember what Sarge said: "According to the Associated Press, the President has been shot in Dallas. Details as they become available". That was it. That's al ...
25 February 2013, Associated Press, "Self-Defense Guide against American Killer Drones" (by Roi Tov) Helicopter Surveillance 2006: I took the picture of a black helicopter above while visiting the USA in 2006. One weekend, I was invited to participate in a peace rally at the city’s central park. While sitting there with a few friends, I looked around. It looked like a huge picnic. People sitting in small groups, far enough from each other to allow privacy. Suddenly, I heard a helicopter. It was a noise foreign to the place. Instinctively, I stood up and moved next to the nearest tree; from the improvised stronghold I looked around. The noise was everywhere and seemed to originate nowhere. Looking upwards, I readied my camera. Suddenly a black chopper approached us. At its lower front side was a surveillance pod. It travelled above the people filming them; it looked like a scene taken from George Orwell’s 1984. I kept walking around the tree so that the iron-beast won’t have a direct sightline with m ...

Interesting read. History Shows What's at Risk with Budget Cuts Feb 16, 2013 Associated Press | by Alan Fram WASHINGTON - Get ready for two weeks of intensifying warnings about how crucial, popular government services are about to wither - including many threats that could eventually come true. President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans made no progress last week in heading off $85 billion in budget-wide cuts that automatically start taking effect March 1. Lacking a bipartisan deal to avoid them and hoping to heap blame and pressure on GOP lawmakers, the administration is offering vivid details about the cuts' consequences: trimmed defense contracts, less secure U.S. embassies, furloughed air traffic controllers. Past administrations have seldom hesitated to spotlight how budget standoffs would wilt programs the public values. When a budget fight between President Bill Clinton and congressional Republicans led to two government shutdowns, in 1995 and 1996, some threats came true, like padlocke . ...

***Subject: LBJ The first Jewish President ? A few months ago, the Associated Press reported that newly released tapes from US president Lyndon Johnson's White House office showed LBJ's "personal and often emotional connection to Israel.” The news agency pointed out that during the Johnson presidency (1963-1969), "the United States became Israel’s chief diplomatic ally and primary arms supplier." But the news report does little to reveal the full historical extent of Johnson's actions on behalf of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Most students of the Arab-Israeli conflict can identify Johnson as the president during the 1967 war. But few know about LBJ's actions to rescue hundreds of endangered Jews during the Holocaust - actions that could have thrown him out of Congress and into jail. Indeed, the title of "Righteous Gentile" is certainly appropriate in the case of the Texan, whose centennial year is being commemorated this year. Appropriately enough, the annual Jerusalem Conference announc ...

Work with UNICEF In October 2008, Gomez was named UNICEF's spokesperson for the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign, which encouraged children to raise money on Halloween to help children around the world.[4] She said that she was "extremely excited" to "encourage other kids to make a difference in the world."[4] In August 2009, a 17-year-old Gomez became the youngest UNICEF ambassador ever, passing fellow songstress Hayley Westenra, who was 18 when she was chosen. Marine photographer Louis Lowery was with them and recorded the event. American soldiers fighting for control of Suribachi's slopes cheered the raising of the flag, and several hours later more Marines headed up to the crest with a larger flag. Joe Rosenthal, a photographer with the Associated Press, met them along the way and recorded the raising of the second flag along with a Marine still photographer and a motion-picture cameraman. Rosenthal took three photographs atop Suribachi. The first, which showed five Marines and one Navy corpsman struggling to hoist the heavy flag pole, became the most reproduced photograph in history and won him a Pulitzer Prize. NATO is strongly considering a proposal to continue funding a security force of 352,000 Afghan troops through 2018, as part of an effort to maintain security and help convince Afghanistan that America and its allies will not abandon it once combat troops leave in 2014.Such a change, if NATO endorses it, could increase the costs to the U.S. and allies by more than $2 billion a year, at a time when most are struggling with budget cuts and fiscal woes. Maintaining the larger troop strength could bolster the confidence of the Afghan forces and make it clear that NATO is committed to an enduring relationship with Afghanistan, a senior NATO official said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the plan publicly. Asked about the plan, NATO Secretary-General Fogh Rasmussen confirmed to reporters that it was under consideration. Associated Press, USA
