Asperger Syndrome may not be the blame Elliot Rodgers behavior. The truth is more complicated than that.
When a notorious figure in the news is identified as an Aspy, there in an inevitable media circus and endless discussions in the Asperger Nation as to how to answer (I mean no general slur here against the news media, as I come from a family of journalists). The attached op-ed was written and published on my Timeline the night of the Sandy Hook Massacre. It stimulated some positive discussion. I offer it as one example of how to respond. "The latest reports on the Sandy Hook shooter indicate that he had both Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Asperger Syndrome. A psychiatrist on local TV noted how AS could have contributed to Adam Lanza's state of mind, but also stressed that most Asperger people are nonviolent, and that AS alone cannot explain this tragedy. As an adult with AS, I want to verify what the psychiatrist said. Your typical Aspie is nonviolent. We often have problems with social relations. We sometimes don't comprehend the consequences of our actions. We might appear blunt, insensitive, even ar ...
Please pray for peace for the victims, UCSB community, and their families. Yes, Elliot Rodger had the same mental illness of Asperger Syndrome (Autism) as Adam Lanza (Sandy Hook shooter). But please remember that Aspergers does NOT cause violence. Violent crimes are NOT caused by mental illness. Social exclusion, bullying, lack of community, and ultimately lack of love and enough care from the people surrounding these violent souls are to blame. That needs to change.
Oh dear Karen Finney! Neither Autism nor Asperger Syndrome make someone prone to be a mass murderer.
Anyone interested in Training Course for Autism Awareness!!! Special Price available this week only. £26. Training provided through Building Capacity in Wallsend. Tel: 0191 2507025 or email sarahfor more details. COURSE OUTLINE AUTISM AWARENESS FOR EDUCATORS LEVEL 3 Autism Spectrum Disorders, including Asperger Syndrome, may affect as many as 1% of the population. Those with such conditions are far too frequently left undiagnosed and spend much of their formative and educational life being bullied and misunderstood, often underachieving even though their actual intelligence and IQ levels may be considerably above average. Children on the autistic spectrum think and experience the world and other people differently, resulting in them misinterpreting and misunderstanding. Educators therefore, need to be aware of how they can best support children on the autistic spectrum to receive an appropriate education, get along with others, and function independently in the world. Wherever possible, children with aut ...
FROM NAMI.ORG Autism Spectrum Disorders Fact Sheet icon What is Autism Spectrum Disorders? Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are complex developmental disorders of brain function. Each can affect a child’s ability through signs of impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual or severely limited activities and interest. These symptoms typically appear during the first three years of life. There is no cure for ASDs, but with appropriate early intervention, a child may improve social development and reduce undesirable behaviors. ASDs affect an estimated two to six per 1,000 children and strike males about four times as often as females. They do not discriminate against racial, ethnic, or social backgrounds. ASDs are “spectrum disorders” that affect individuals differently and to varying degrees. The ASDs are Autism (the defining disorder of the spectrum), Asperger Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), Rett Syndrome, an ...

The name "Autism" didn't exist until 1944 (70 years). There are some high functioning autistic (or Asperger Syndrome - an autism spectrum) celebrities and well known people who you may know: Mozart (classical music composer) Albert Einstein (scientist and genius) Daryl Hannah (actress) Tim Burton (film director) Andy Warhol (artist) Courtney Love (wife of Kurt Cobain) Dan Aykroyd (director and actor) I have three autistic family members who just as normal as can be. Most of the times it takes somebody famous and/or a movie everybody loves to shed light on an illness otherwise completely ignored - you probably remember RAINMAN with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, which brought the issue of Autism to a wide audience. Since then numerous movies and TV shows have taken on topics as Asperger Syndrome, Bipolar Disorder, Tourette Syndrome and other illnesses. Such audience around the world learned about them and what it means for people who have it. In most cases sympathy for the affected rose tremendously because people learned about the causes and indications and did not longer blame people for being rude simply because they could see why they behaved as they do. Now another illness comes into awareness: Dyslexia. This is when one has difficulty to learn to read and write. Dylan, the grandson of Robert Redford, suffers from it and his father James made a documentary about what it means to have dyslexia. So next time someone who is supposed to be able to read and write but ...
