do you spell success? P-e-r-s-i-s-t-e-n-c-e CAL THOMAS SYNDICATED COLUMNIST The annual ritual known as the Scripps National Spelling Bee came and went last week with kids spelling words that, I suspect, many with graduate degrees couldn’t spell. The winner was Arvind Mahankali, a 13-year-old eighth-grader from Bayside Hills, N.Y. Mahankali is the first boy to win the title since 2008. There is a lesson to be learned from the success of these young people, including the ones who came close to winning but didn’t. It is the value of persistence. Mahankali won this year by spelling the German word “knaidel.” He lost the bee three times before and was eliminated from competition in 2011 and 2012 on Germanderived words. Recognizing his weakness, Mahankali repaired his deficit. And his strategy succeeded. History teaches the value of persistence. Abraham Lincoln lost several elections before winning the 1860 presidential race. He never gave up. Inventors of the telephone, airplane and motorcar refused to ...

Why Indian-Americans d-o-m-i-n-a-t-e spelling bees Posted By Marya Hannun Thursday, May 30 Update: The streak continues. Arvind Mahankali, 13, won the 2013 national spelling bee with the German-Yiddish word "knaidel" on Thursday night, making him the sixth Indian-American winner in as many years. When, in 2010, Anamika Veeramani correctly sounded out the letters to "stromuhr" (I hadn't heard the word before either) to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, she captured the hearts and minds of the Indian and U.S. media alike. This was partly thanks to her inspiring performance -- and also because she had become the third Indian-American in as many years to win the prestigious competition. "Spelling champ's victory hat-trick for Indian-Americans," gushed, the Hindu, an English-language daily in India. Indian-Americans have maintained their Scripps dominance ever since, having now won the title of America's best speller for five consecutive years. In fact, 10 of the last 14 winners have been Indian-America . ...

(NYDN) Millions tuned in last night to watch the 11 finalists duke it out for the 86th annual Scripps Spelling Bee title. The winner, two-time third-place finisher Arvind Mahankali, walked away with $30,000–not an insignificant amount of lunch money to get beaten up for–after correctly spelling the word knaidel, from the Yiddish for a dumpling. Perhaps, it was fitting that the word Mahankali needed to spell prior to knaidel was tokonoma–a Japanese word for a niche–because today Yiddishists and etymologists are kvelling over the public discovery of the winning word. We sought out Allan Metcalf, who brilliantly profiled master etymologist Gerald Cohen for Tablet earlier this month, for his thoughts on the knaidel. The most interesting points Metcalf raised–after consulting the Jewish English Lexicon–was that there are six acceptable spellings for the word and the spelling of knaidel that Mahankali gave was not the lead one. He explained: “Knaidel” is not the headword, “knaidle” is. The w ...
Drama! A front page story in the New York Times says the national spelling bee champion Arvind Mahankali spelled the winning word 'knaidel' incorrectly. Yiddish experts are confirming the correct spelling is actually 'kneydl'. Kneydl is the matzo ball or dumpling that Jewish cooks put in chicken soup. The origin of the word is German, from the word knödel (noodle). The boy is of course Indian American and has never actually tasted the Jewish dumpling. Will the finalists file a class action lawsuit?

Mirra Mazel Tov, Arvind! But Are You Sure It’s Not Kneydl? by Daniel Gross May 31, 2013 11:46 AM EDT Arvind Mahankali won this year’s national spelling bee when he got ‘knaidel’ right. But, asks Daniel Gross, isn’t it a little meshugge to say there’s a right way to spell a Yiddish word? Well ain’t that America? We make a competition out of spelling, televised and hyped by ESPN. And it’s won by an Indian-American kid from Queens who accurately spelled a Yiddish word for dumpling: knaidel. Mazal tov! Or is it mazel tov? On the other hand, oy vey! The idea of a competition in which exactitude and standards are paramount being decided by a Yiddish word is a little ferkakte. Cliff Owen/AP Why? Consider that words from Latin or Greek entered the English vernacular and written languages centuries ago, and so there has been plenty of time to iron out standards. Nobody will argue about the proper English spelling of amorous, from the Latin root amor. By contrast, Anglophones have been using words l ...
