the smartest move that Modi has made vis-à-vis China —and which hardly anyone seems to have understood the significance of so far—is giving former army chief V.K. Singh an apparently strange combination of portfolios. Singh will be minister of state with independent charge of the North East, and also be minister of state in the external affairs ministry under Sushma Swaraj . As China continues to refuse to recognise Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India, and builds military-grade highways that can rapidly move tanks and heavy artillery to India’s border, it’s absolutely the perfect stratagem to put a former army chief in charge of the region. This should give the Chinese some pause. And his additional responsibility in the external affairs ministry is a brilliant piece of thinking. In effect, Modi has made a committed Indian soldier our man for China. The People’s Liberation Army may now think twice before sending in troops miles inside Ladakh and camp there for a week and saunter back ...

New Delhi: Just hours after Narendra Modi took charge as the Prime Minister, the MoS PMO, Jitendra Singh came out with a controversial statement on the Article 370. Singh said that the government had started speaking to stakeholders to repeal the Act. "The process of repealing Article 370 has started. We are speaking to the stakeholders," he said. Article 370 specifies that except for Defence, Foreign Affairs, Communications and ancilliary matters (matters specified in the instrument of accession), the Indian Parliament needs the State Government's concurrence for applying all other laws. Thus the state's residents live under a separate set of laws, including those related to citizenship, ownership of property, and fundamental rights, as compared to other Indians. This unique status is granted to Jammu and Kashmir and similar protections exist in tribal areas of India including those in Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Nagaland. "The BJP has won more than half of the seat ...

Narendra Modi must bring about serious foreign policy change Addressing a rally in Arunachal Pradesh on March 12, Narendra Modi, BJP’s then PM nominee, made it clear to the people of the state that: “No power on earth can *** away Arunachal Pradesh (from India).” He added: “Times have changed. The world does not welcome the mindset of expansion in today’s times. China will also have to leave behind its mindset of expansion.” Interestingly, Beijing did not react strongly to Modi’s address. Unlike Washington, Beijing had welcomed him as CM of Gujarat and is aware of his readiness to strengthen economic and investment ties. What Modi said about Beijing’s “mindset of expansion” was again manifested on May 1, when China moved a giant oil rig to a location less than 200 km from the shores of Vietnam. The movement was accompanied by the deployment of seven naval vessels and some 80 coastguard and other boats. This was within Vietnam’s Continental Shelf and Exclusive Economic Zone, and vi .. ...

Indian Railway,is this the solution for stopping unwanted guests in our state(Arunachal Pradesh) by severing the railway services in the state or is it your game so that we would beg you to resume your services. In my view you are playing very dirty politics. We have every right to say no to unwanted outsiders and now it is clear that you are party to influx of unwanted people in our state. There might be many more better ways to solve the ilp problem than to seal the railway station.

China describes Northeast India as 'most neglected' As India's general elections began on Monday from the northeastern states, Chinese official media described the remote region as the most "neglected" area in the country. "India's northeastern states — which also include Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Nagaland are said to be the country's most neglected region," state-run Xinhua news agency said in its report on the commencement of polls in India. There was no mention of Arunachal Pradesh, which China claims as southern Tibet. Earlier, China reacted guardedly to BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's accusation in February that it had expansionist mindset. Modi had also asserted that Arunachal Pradesh was an integral part of India and will remain so. Though Modi's comments came up for mild criticism from Chinese media, analysts here view him favourable as he visited Beijing twice as Gujarat chief minister and Gujarat has received maximum Chinese investments in India.

VERY INTERESTING: ANNUAL INCOME OF ALL THE VOTERS COMBINED IN THE ASSEMBLY CONSTITUENCY LESS THAN THE DECLARED ASSETS OF THE CANDIDATE ELECTED UNOPPOSED: When I read in the morning papers this fact of the richest candidate in Arunachal Pradesh being worth more than 187 crores, I did not have these facts. I looked at additional facts about the constituency and the state more closely. According to data available Palin Assembly constituency has total 13,811 electors, all men and women included. A quick check at per capita income revealed that per capita income of people in Arunachal Pradesh in 2012-2013 is 77,647 for the whole year. Quick calculation revealed that if you multiply total voters with per capita income of a citizen in Arunachal Pradesh, it comes to 107,23,82,717 that 107.23 crores. This means that what total population of the constituency earns in one full year is 80 crore less than the declared assets of this candidate who has been elected unopposed. So much for the democracy being for the peo ...
India will get tougher on territorial disputes with China and in its old rivalry with Pakistan if Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) leader Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister in May after a general election, two of his aides said. Modi, who is the front-runner to win the five-week Lok Sabha election starting on April 7, has taken an aggressive tone against the two neighbouring nations. On the campaign trail, he has warned Beijing to shed its "mindset of expansionism" and in the past he has railed against Pakistan for attacks by militants in India. Read: India's Modi: Economic inspiration or illusion? "I swear in the name of the soil that I will protect this country," Modi said at a rally in Arunachal Pradesh last month, a region claimed by China. India, China and Pakistan are all nuclear powers. They are also jockeying to take positions in Afghanistan as Western troops start to withdraw from the war-torn nation after a 12-year insurgency. India has fought three wars with Pakistan and had a 1962 border s ...

China is claiming hundreds of islands and reefs, along with millions of square kilometers of ocean, from Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam. It also claims most of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. For the countries resisting Chinese demands, events in Ukraine cannot be reassuring. It is already clear that Russian President Vladimir Putin will achieve his aim of changing the borders -- and will not be satisfied with just the region of Crimea. Putin's plan is to separate all the territory east of the Dnieper River into a new state, "Novy Russia," that could become the Russian Federation's 22nd republic. This territory on the east bank of the Dnieper is many times larger than the Transnistria ministate Russia seized from the Republic of Moldova. Transnistria is also separated from Russia proper, while Novy Russia would seamlessly extend Russian territory down to the Black Sea, including Crimea. Given the advance warning -- all the detailed planning, down to the design of a Novy Russia flag, c ...

PPA declares first list of candidates for Arunachal Pradesh
Attacking the UPA government's foreign policy, senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha today said there would be a complete change in the 'personality' of the Indian government if Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister. "It will not be just a regime change at the Centre, but it will be a total change in the personality of the government," Sinha said at a discussion on human rights organised by the MDMK here. He pointed to Modi's speech in Arunachal Pradesh last month asking China to give up its "expansionist mindset" and to the neighbouring country's response talking about peace, saying "such is the courage and determination that we will show". Referring to Sri Lankan Tamils issue and the arrests of Indian fishermen, he said the island nation like other countries "had not been taking India seriously". Foreign policy was not conducted from a position of weakness. The Vajpayee-led NDA regime handled the post-Pokhran II nuclear tests "courageously without kneeling down" before any country, Sinha said, adding a si ...

THE SOUTH ASIA CHANNEL Decoding Modi’s Foreign Policy BY DEEP PAL MARCH 6, 2014 For someone who has carefully avoided articulating concrete foreign policy stands, it was an unusual statement. Speaking in a public meeting in Arunachal Pradesh, the Indian state that China calls "southern Tibet" and claims as part of its territory, Narendra Modi, Prime Ministerial candidate of India's principal opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), warned China against a "policy of expansionism." The comment made headlines, even attracting the attention of the Chinese foreign ministry, which countered that China "has never waged a war of aggression to occupy an inch of land of other countries." In campaigning for the upcoming elections, Modi has largely steered away from foreign policy. Unlike in the United States, commenting on international issues is not a key component of elections in India. The only other time Modi held forth on the subject, in October of last year, he criticized foreign policy by the current govern ...

He explained about the objective of the three-day Arunachal Film Festival beginning from February 28 and called upon all members of the media fraternity to attend the festival. No force can take Arunachal from us Modi tells China HT Correspondent and Agencies, Hindustan Times Pasighat (Arunachal Pradesh), February 22, 2014 Bharatiya Janata Party's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi addressed a foreign policy issue for the first time on Saturday and asked China to shed its "expansionist mindset", making it clear that no power on earth can *** Arunachal Pradesh away from India. After addressing huge rallies earlier in the month in Assam and Manipur, the Gujarat chief minister was speaking at Pasighat in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Modi is later scheduled to address two more rallies at Silchar in Assam and at Agartala in Tripura. "China should shed its expansionist policy and forge bilateral ties with India for peace, progress and prosperity of both the nations," said Modi. India and China have fought a brief war in 1962 over differences on the border. China lays claim to more than 90,000 sq km disputed by New Delhi in the eastern sector of the Himalayas, w ...
On its website, the Sikkim Energy and Power department says that the state’s swift rivulet systems have huge hydropower potential — “8,000 MW peak with a firm base of 3,000 MW”. With a liberalised power policy and the opening up of this sector to private developers, it claims, “Sikkim is poised to gain in a big way”. We have heard this sales pitch elsewhere. Other Himalayan states — particularly Arunachal Pradesh (Another Disaster in the Making, Volume 10 Issue 28) — are also chasing the ‘hydro-dollar’ dream. But Sikkim’s desperation is singular. Here, the authorities are not only bending the regulatory framework, but, for certain projects, have altogether bypassed it. This May, the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) chaired by the Prime Minister sent a team to inspect the 520 MW Teesta IV project that had applied for wildlife clearance. In its report to the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) this August, the team drew a parallel between some hydel projects of Sikkim and iron ...

Students protesting Nido Tania's death in Delhi lathicharged Updated: February 14, 2014 17:04 IST New Delhi: The Delhi Police has said it used a "mild lathicharge" to disperse a group of about 50 to 60 students from the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University, who were protesting near the Rashtrapati Bhavan against the death of Nido Tania, a student from Arunachal Pradesh who was brutally beaten at a Delhi market last month. The police said the students were attempting to walk from Vijay Chowk towards the president's palace where several dignitaries had gathered for a function. The police cordoned off the Vijay Chowk after it was cleared. A protester said, "We have been targeted since long. We are protesting to give the message that this is enough now. Treat us equal. In India there is the right to protest so why are they arresting us?" The police, however, said that no one was arrested. ‘Racial’ heat NE teachers and students on Doordarshan By SUMI SUKANYA New Delhi, Feb. 11: Acting on a complaint filed by a group of Delhi University teachers and students hailing from the Northeast — who accused Doordarshan of being discourteous towards them and showing “racial bias” after inviting them for a talk show on DD News — Prasar Bharati has formed a fact-finding committee to look into the allegations. According to a source, the incident took place on Friday when a group of teachers and students were invited to participate in a talk show Shanivar Charcha on DD News on racial discrimination in connection with the murder of 19-year-old Nido Tania from Arunachal Pradesh in Delhi. Nido was beaten up by a group of shopkeepers in South Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar area when he got into an argument with the accused after being teased on his appearance and later succumbed to his injuries. Government orders a CBI probe into the death of Arunachal Pradesh youth Nido Tania
New Delhi: Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Tuesday ordered a CBI probe in the Nido Tania murder case. The 19-year-old from Arunachal Pradesh died a day after being beaten up with rods and sticks in Lajpat Nagar on January 29. Joint commissioner (southeastern range) Vivek Gogia is likely to be examined to see if there was any negligence on police's part, sources said. The decision came on a day when Delhi Police informed the court that murder charges had been slapped on the four accused- Sunny, Farman, Sunder and Pawan- after the postmortem report revealed that Tania died of injuries to his head and face. Taniam, son of Arunachal Pradesh Congress legislator Nido Pavitra, died two days ago after being allegedly thrashed by some shopkeepers. Earlier in the day, the police added the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act to the FIR. Taniam's viscera report, which would ascertain the cause of his death, would be ready in a week, TV channels reported. PS: Nocte Dancers-Proud Arunachalees, Proud Indians. A Nocte Warrior- Sentinel of NE. GIVE NORTHEAST A PRIDE OF PLACE - The recent days and weeks have been indeed traumatic and chaotic for the whole Northeast, especially the young state Arunachal Pradesh which is overtly glorified as an ‘island of peace.’ Arunachal is also lovingly described as the land of the rising sun as the rays of the sun first kiss the lofty hills, mountains and the deep valleys of the Himalayan state. But sadly, not only development in the true sense of the term leaves a lot to be desired in Arunachal and the Northeast but the truly patriotic Arunachal people are not even allowed to live with dignity in the metropolis of the ancient and great country India. However, the State Government under the able leadership of the affable Chief Minister Nabam Tuki is leaving no stone unturned to address the burgeoning problems the state is faced with. Not only were the people of Arunachal Pradesh drowned in deep sorrow and gloom but were . ...

Delhi’s step motherly behaviour ‘hurts’ NE people New Delhi, Feb 9: Facing racial discrimination has become a part of daily life for a majority of youngsters coming from the northeast to the national capital, which touts its tag of being a cosmopolitan city. Often referred to as 'chinki', 'chowmein' and 'momos', these youngsters say they have to resist discrimination and fight against abuses hurled at them by their compatriots. Coming from the eight NE states of Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim, these youth hope to get better education and job opportunities in the national capital. Women from northeast face even worse as they undergo traumatic experiences daily while living in the national capital region, comprising neighbouring Noida and Gurgaon. Be it public transport, educational institutions or workplace, NE people feel those belonging to so-called mainland India discriminate them because of their different facial features, hair style, dressing ...
Protest in Delhi against killing of Nido Taniam (a youth from Arunachal Pradesh :: 01 February 2014.
A quick brush-up for all of us on North-East India. This post is, in no way meant to embarrass, insult or accuse anyone of stereotypical attitude. It is merely a take on how, most of the times, we end up looking extremely stupid due to childish ignorance. Q1) How many states do we have in North-East India? A- Excluding Sikkim, there are Seven Sister States in the North East India, collectively called the 'Paradise Unexplored'. Pretty apt name, in my opinion. These 7 states include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya. Q2) What language is spoken in North-East India? A- The most commonly spoken languages in Assam are Assamese (Bishnupriya) and Bengali. Indo-Burmese and Sino-Tibetian origin languages like Manipuri (Meitei) are also largely predominant. Q3) Are they all Budhhist like the Chinese? A- No! Most of North East India is largely Hindu. It is, however, as religiously diverse as the rest of India with Christian missionaries setting strong and even Muslim populat ...

True to form, Lok Sabha drowns in din on Day 1 MPs from Andhra Pradesh force adjournment The first day of the extended winter session of the Lok Sabha on Wednesday ended less than 15 minutes after it began, with no business transacted other than passing a unanimous resolution condemning the killing of Nido Tania, an Arunachal Pradesh student, in New Delhi last week. The adjournment comes amid mounting criticism of the 15th Lok Sabha, which has passed fewer laws than any of the previous ones which had completed the full term. Two flagship pieces of anti-corruption legislation — the Right of Citizens for Time-Bound Delivery of Goods and Services and Redressal of their Grievances Bill, 2011, and the Prevention of Bribery of Foreign Public Officials of Public International Organisations Bill, 2011 — had been scheduled to be passed on Wednesday. The Bills were among the 39 the United Progressive Alliance government had prioritised for the winter session. However, MPs from Andhra Pradesh forced Parliament t ...

Nido Tania Tangled and spiked hair; You lay lifeless, alone; You hit your head and nails; You cried so *** cruel and brute lanes. You dance you sing; But stopped crying and laugh; Heart stopped to swing, Like a trashed pendulum. You lay lifeless but a name; All with anger, recalling; No love was there, once, everlasting. You vomit blood, What we had and Victim of ugly racism, Preached by hideous kings. No inkling, no input, no reply. I howl seeing you, like this. Gone out of your senses, And gone with The winds for ever. I hand these tears, to you the pain you left, Never to return from day one when you were real and there; Still fresh and chirping. P.S.- Composed by Dr. Yogesh Sharma for Speaking Tree. This poem is written as a tribute and to express pain and anguish over the murder of Nido Tania, a nineteen years old student from Arunachal Pradesh, India, in a brutal racial attack.

Words of the Day I. In the case of Nido Tania, son of an Arunachal Pradesh legislator, his dyed hair seems to have invited some gratuitous remarks, possibly a racist slur, from those present at a shop as he enquired about an address. 1. In the statement cited above, ‘slur’ means an insulting or disparaging remark or innuendo; aspersion. Slur can also be used as a verb meaning to insult. For instance, she accused the programme of slurring the company's name. The word is also used to refer to pronouncing words in a way that is not clear so that they run into each other, usually because the speaker is drunk or tired. An example illustrating the usage of the word is as follows - Bradley said that he slurred his speech for two months after the fight. In the context of music, the word means to play or sing a group of two or more musical notes so that each one runs smoothly into the next. II. Further, the Prime Minister was eager to expedite the use of Aadhaar in social sector schemes to further targeting an ...

INDIA- Enough shale oil to join OPEC? - India has enough oil trapped in shale and coal deposits in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to produce 140 million tones per year for 100 years, say former geologists of Oil India Ltd including ex-Chairman and Managing Director Chudamani Ratnam. This is more than India’s entire current consumption, high enough to make India a member of OPEC.You might think this would be a major strategic thrust of our energy policy. Yet there was no mention of shale oil at last week’s meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Energy Coordination Committee, chaired by the Prime Minister. The meeting focused on acquiring oil, gas and coal reserves overseas. Does not domestic shale oil deserve higher priority? We need an immediate strategy to evaluate shale oil deposits in greater detail, evaluate the best technologies for extracting oil, and then set up a commercial scale plant. Given the huge potential benefits, the risks are very worthwhile. If this works, we can throw open our huge deposits ...

For those who are still unaware of the Nido Tania case . Guys instead of liking pages of celebrities like that of Robert Downey and Kristen Stewart have a look at Justice for Nido Tania page.-_- Do you even know how are our NE brothers and sisters are going through outside of the North East region ? A boy from Arunachal Pradesh is brutally beaten up by around 8 men, in the streets of Lajpat Nagar. The policemen come, take him to the police station and after a while, put him back to the same place. The next day, reports of his death outspread. And the reason to all this. The offenders made fun of the boy's hair color, to which he retaliated, and next, they battered him to death. Does this really give a valid account of everything that happened? This is not a pristine thing to say that discrimination has become a detrimental trite. “It is UPA’s responsibility to convince Samajwadi Party on the issue” Bharatiya Janata Party national spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday accused the Congress of not being committed to passing the Lokpal Bill in the winter session of Parliament. Talking to reporters here, she said it was the responsibility of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) to convince its ally, the Samajwadi Party, on the issue. She was referring to how the Samajwadi Party opposed the Bill when it was tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Friday. “There was absolutely a directionless leadership in the country during the last ten years. There were killings along the north frontier, incursions in Arunachal Pradesh, repeated issues involving Sri Lanka…people were let down.” On the announcement of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi snapping ties with the Congress, she said it was the prerogative of any political party to form a particular alliance.

SINO-INDIAN RELATIONS Dr Akhtar Hussain What happened in 1962 some 51 years ago continues to haunt India. Its armed forces were humiliated at the hands of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China when they crossed McMahon line into Aksai Chin and NEFA (present day Arunachal Pradesh) and won decisive victories, wiping out Indian posts. By 24 October, the Chinese had the area they claimed in Ladakh under their control. In NEFA they had overrun all Indian posts along the McMahon Line. Pt Nehru was blamed for the debacle as he failed diplomatically to prevent the war. His policy of Non alignment and more specially Panch Sheel doctrine proved to be disastrous. Nehru and his defense minister tasked Indian army beyond its capacity. The army was ill equipped, unprepared, poorly led and dependent on non-existent communication links, besides there was resentment among army generals for untimely promotion to one of Nehru’s friend General Koul. Nehru is long gone but the scars of the 1962 debacle on India’s stra ...

All About Bamboo Bamboo continues to be one of the most versatile plants in the world. Though China is better known for its relationship with bamboo, 2011 figures from the State Forest Report reveal that India is the world’s second richest country in bamboo biodiversity. It houses 136 species; 125 of which are indigenous and 11 being exotic. Most of India’s green sound bamboos reside in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, and Mizoram, respectively. Though roughly half of the country’s bamboo is concentrated in East India, all of the states house the plant in varying density. Origin of Bamboo Bamboo originated from prehistoric grass dating back million years. According to a 2013 Science Daily article, bamboo plants formed and spread on Gondwana, a supercontinent that existed between 510 and 180 million years ago. This landmass included present-day South America, Africa, Arabia, Madagascar, India, Australia, and Antarctica. Some botanists speculate that most of bamboo originates in China, as this is wh ...

A beautiful resource. Welcome to the Himalaya Atlas of Aerial Panoramas, one of a series of collections of photorealistic aerial views created by Dr. William A. Bowen, professor emeritus of the Department of Geography at California State University Northridge. The atlas contains over 700 computer generated panoramas that portray every square foot of the vast range between Arunachal Pradesh on the east and Uttar Pradesh on the west, including all of Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, and portions of Tibet and the lowlands of India. Seeing the Earth from a high place allows us to grasp quickly the essential geography of vast regions that eludes those who are earth bound. Most of these panoramas were created between virtual elevation of 50 to 200 kilometers above sea level with a virtual 35 mm camera equipped with a 22 mm lens. Normally the vistas encompass much more than a thousand square miles (259,000 hectares) of the earth's surface.

New strike corps for China border a fiscal minefield the New Year, a flag-hoisting ceremony in Ranchi marked the raising of 17 Corps, India’s fourteenth army corps. This is the army’s first mountain strike corps (MSC), manned by more than 80,000 soldiers, who will launch offensives into enemy territory while the existing formations defend Indian soil. Triumphal media commentary has lauded this as a caution to China after last year’s incident at Daulat Beg Oldi, when a Chinese patrol intruded into the northern tip of India in April/May and set up camp on the Indian-held Depsang Plain. India has already raised two new mountain divisions in the last five years, boosting the defence of Arunachal Pradesh by some 40,000 troops. Now, another 80,000 hope to deter Chinese adventurism. Yet, a Business Standard analysis of defence spending suggests that the MSC will financially damage India’s military more than it could military damage China’s, by dealing a crippling blow to military modernisation. U knw Jaswant Singh ( JASWANT GARH ) in tawang but do you know BOB KHATHING ??? _ In 1951, Major Bob Khathing commanded a force of 200 soldiers and re-established India’s sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh, much to the annoyance of Jawaharlal Nehru. Sidharth Mishra profiles his life and work on his 100th birth anniversary Sixty-four years after Independence, it seems we have consigned to the dustbin of history some of our freedom fighters and stalwarts who played a sterling role in knitting the country together. Ironically, the discourse has been confined to the positive role played by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and, of course, the fallacies of Nehruvian policy. In the process, the contributions of a few great men do not even make it to the footnote of our mainstream history. Blame it on the lack of official acknowledgment of their work and, of course, the failure of intellectuals, rooted in their respective ideological moorings, to initiate an independent research to unveil the truth. ‘Strong Indo-US ties needed to balance China’s rise' Revitalising the Indo-US relationship is crucial to “managing” the rise of China, agreed ambassadors Nick Burns and Shyam Saran at a Hindustan Times Leadership Summit session on “Catching Up with the Dragon.” Burns, former number three in the US State Department during the Bush administration, said China is “overplaying its hand” in its territorial disputes with Japan, the South China Sea and India. “The US doesn’t recognize what China is doing regarding Arunachal Pradesh and does not support it,” he said. Washington seeks to work closely with Beijing, said Burns, accepting the “centrality of China in today’s world.” However, “the other side” that has been evident over the past few years is that the US and China are also “strategic competitors.” Saran, head of the National Security Advisory Board and ex-foreign secretary, noted a similar duality in Sino-Indian relations. India and China had common views and worked tog ...

Since he was sworn in as president 16 months ago, Mukherjee has travelled thrice to Assam and twice to Nagaland. He has also visited Arunachal, Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura once. In his frequent travels to the region, Mukherjee is signalling to the chief ministers and governors of the northeastern states that they have a champion in New Delhi. At the same time, he is pressing Delhi to keep its promises to the people of the Northeast. Taken together, Mukher ...

China's mild reaction results in strong opposition from Arunachal Itanagar,Nov.30 (ANI): As Beijing upped its ante against India when President Pranab Mukharjee was on a two-day visit to Arunachal Pradesh, which the latter claims as its territory, the response from Itanagar was strong. "All presidents and Prime Ministers have visited this Arunachal Pradesh, an indivisible part India and who China is to react," asked Chief Minister Nabam Tuki. Talking to media persons immediately after the departure of President Mukherjee after delivering the convocation address at the Rajiv Gandhi University near here, Tuki wondered "when the President or Prime Minister visits their own country, how could China react? I don't believe this reaction is official. If it is so they (China) should never react in future." Asked about what New Delhi has been doing, Tuki said: "The central government has been doing its best. However, during bilateral talks, China accepts Arunachal Pradesh as integral part of India. But their negat ...

I can't resist my temptations to congratlate Mr Pranab kumar Mukherjee for his decision to visit Arunachal Pradesh despite China's claim over the area & Tawang heights in particular. Eversince his taking ovr the office, he had induced an avtivism in Raisina hills Whether it is execution of Ajmal Kasab & Afsal guru or visiting arunachal. Silently he brings radical changes in working ethics of Rashtrapati Bhavan. A non political figure, however god he is, vold not have done it. Thanks to Sonia Gandhi for her stern stand in recommending Shri Pranab Kumar Mkherjee for Indian presidenxy. Only some communists elements looking for their forefathers in China may protest. A case of Soft Power Failure Although China has focused on soft power development in its relationship with most of the Global South, in China’s near-abroad, the relationship is defined by hard power. In the case of Japan (the Senkakus), the Philippines (the Scarborough Shoal and the Spratlys), Vietnam (the Spratlys and Mekong River watershed), India (Arunachal Pradesh), and elsewhere, China has used aggressive displays of military force, economic sanctions, and “forward” development such as building highways into disputed territories or establishing outposts at sea. Within ASEAN itself, China has utilized economic power to cultivate patron-client relations with Cambodia and (increasingly) Thailand, which has left ASEAN unable to reach a consensus on the best way to deal with the South China Sea disputes.
