Arsenal's new kit suppliers Puma will help the club fund a move to sign Mario Balotelli this summer, according to reports in Italy cited by The Metro. Andre Van Sprouile:Why I want us all to be Arsenal fans for a season. This view will not be popular at White Hart Lane. I don’t expect too many people will agree around Stamford Bridge, in Manchester or on Merseyside, either. But this season, we should all be Arsenal fans. If they are successful, that will mean Arsene Wenger stays in the Premier League. And we need him to stay. This man has had a profound impact on British football and the game here would be poorer without him. Where would the Premier League be minus Wenger? Clubs would not have been so quick to look for foreign coaches if he had floundered. His success opened the floodgates and since he arrived at Arsenal in 1996, 47 managers from overseas have been appointed by top-flight clubs, compared to 120 British. That is a remarkable figure. There is a case to argue that without Wenger, we might not have had Jose Mourinho, Rafa Benitez, Roberto Mancini or Carlo Ancelotti managing here. Without Wenger, we might never have been dazzled by Thierry ...

EPL: Man City Draw on Memory for New Year Title Fight. Champions Manchester City go into 2013 facing a daunting seven-point deficit on Premier League leaders Manchester United and a testing encounter against stubborn Stoke City on Tuesday. Roberto Mancini's side ended the year which delivered their first Premier League title with a gritty 4-3 triumph over Norwich City, proving their high-profile players also have the mettle for a fight. It is early days in the long title run-in but United, who travel to Wigan Athletic on New Year's Day, are traditionally strong in the second half of the campaign. Mancini, however, does not need to trawl the memory banks too far for inspiration as United threw away an eight-point advantage with only six games left to play last season. "We showed we are there for the title," Mancini said after his team displayed their steely core to beat Norwich despite Samir Nasri's sending-off just before halftime. "We won't leave this title easily and will fight every game. With 10 playe ...

Pressure builds on Pardew as Newcastle entertain City Posted on December 13, 20120 Comments LONDON (Reuters) – Alan Pardew was hailed last season as a steady hand on the Newcastle United tiller but finds himself contemplating an impending relegation battle ahead of a clash with wounded champions Manchester City on Saturday. With the season nearing the halfway mark, Pardew is among a handful of coaches including City’s Roberto Mancini and Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger who are already feeling the heat. Pardew was rewarded with an eight-year contract earlier in the season in an effort to bring stability to a club more used to the spinning mayhem of the managerial merry-go-round. The deal was in recognition of the fact that the former West Ham United boss had steered the north east club to fifth place in the Premier League last term while making the most of a limited transfer budget. The close-season optimism that he could propel his charges to the promised land of the Champions League has evaporated as this ...

According to the Daily Mail, Arsene Wenger is considering making a major change from a back four and a 4-3-3 variant formation to a back three. The Daily Mail report says that Wenger wanted to make the change before Arsenal's trip to Schalke following a fairly abject defensive performance against Manchester United, but decided against it based on the lack of time there would be to prepare. Playing a back three would allow Wenger to get all of Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Thomas Vermaelen into the side, and would also give license to Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs, as wing backs, to join into the attack with less fear about leaving space behind on the counter attack. And while playing three at the back has gotten a bad rap because of Roberto Mancini's fiddling about with it at Manchester City, a switch to three at the back was crucial to their comeback against Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend; Tottenham couldn't deal with Maicon's overlaps.

Jamie Redknapp said Arsenal's midfield dominance ensured they earned a deserved point at Manchester City. "Alex Song did his best stuff going forward, but Arteta knows his strengths, sits in front of them and just patrols. He snuffs out a lot of danger that teams bring." Jamie Redknapp Pundit felt Arsene Wenger's side were superior for much of Sunday's clash at the Etihad Stadium, but they required a late goal from Laurent Koscielny to earn a 1-1 draw after falling behind to Joleon Lescott's first-half. Match report Roberto Mancini started with Javi Garcia and Yaya Toure in central midfield, but Redknapp felt they were overpowered by the strength of numbers that Arsenal had in that department. "I felt it was a really interesting match-up tactically, he said. "There were two different formations, but I felt Santi Cazorla for the whole game caused Manchester City so many problems. "Javi Garcia didn't know what to do at times. He didn't know whether to push in and mark one of the other midfield players or go ...

Roberto Mancini believes Arsenal are genuine contenders for the title and thinks they are benefiting from Robin Van Persie's departure. Arsenal visit the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in a meeting of two unbeaten sides who have taken eight points from their first four games. Arsene Wenger's team have won their last two league games, scoring eight goals, and Mancini feels the sale of their 30-goal top scorer Van Persie has reduced expectations at the Emirates Stadium. "Arsenal can compete for the title," Mancini said. "I don't know if they are better than last year but there is less pressure.

Sergio Aguero will return from injury when Manchester City host Arsenal in Sunday's Sky Live game. The forward is available after five weeks out with a knee injury, but Samir Nasri has just a slim chance of facing his old club. A hamstring injury kept Nasri out of the midweek defeat at Real Madrid, and Roberto Mancini said: "I do not think he will be ready." Mario Balotelli is in contention, and Mancini has rubbished suggestions his omission from the squad in Madrid was down to a dispute between player and manager. Vito Mannone will continue in goal for Arsenal after Arsene Wenger revealed that Wojciech Szczesny's ankle problem will keep him out for a further two or three weeks. That means a fourth start of the season for Mannone as Wenger picks from the same squad on duty at Montpellier in midweek. Jack Wilshere is back in training but will feature for the U21 side before he is considered for a senior recall.

A five minute blitz before half time was enough to clinch the win for Roberto Mancini's men as first Pablo Zabaleta and then the superb Yaya Toure scored from well-crafted team moves. The result was a little harsh on Arsenal, who despite only playing their second game of pre-season, looked creative and dangerous in attack without an end product and defensive deficiencies ultimately costing them dearly. But City looked solid throughout and should justifiably be installed as favourites to reclaim their Premiership title once the new season kicks off on August 18. Despite the match being a pre-season friendly, both managers named strong starting line ups as they looked to give their senior players a run out ahead of the new season. City had endured a mixed pre-season with a win, draw and loss in their three matches and Mancini made only two changes to the side that swept aside Turkish club Besiktas last Friday, with Stefan Savic and Nir Biton replacing Marcos Lopes and Adam Johnson in the City midfield. *** ...

Sir Alex Ferguson's team, bought by the Glazer family for $1.47billion in 2005, are now worth $2.23billion according to Forbes magazine. Four football teams breach the top 10 most valuable sports franchises, with United and Real Madrid occupying first and second spots. Lionel Messi and Barcelona sit eighth, behind a clutch of NFL and baseball teams, while Arsene Wenger's Arsenal - worth $1.29billion - squeak in at number 10. Manchester United and Manchester City may have to wait a year if they want to sign Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie. The Arsenal striker’s future has been the subject of intense speculation as his current deal expires next summer, while Roberto Mancini and Sir Alex Ferguson are reportedly keen to acquire his services. However, a report in The Sun claims the Emirates Stadium manager Arsene Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis are willing tolet him run down the remainder of the contract rather than let him go to Old Trafford or the Etihad Stadium. Samir Nasri posed Arsenal with a similar problem last year, but the north London side opted to sell to City rather than lose him for nothing this summer after he made it clear he would not sign an extension. Van Persie’s situation differs in that he is far more valuable to the side and will be almost 30 when his contract runs out – Wenger has always been reluctant to offer long-term deals to players over that age. Wenger and Gazidis are due to meet with t ...
