Arsenal's deal for Villarreal defender Gabriel has moved a step closer after the Brazilian was granted a work permit. After sealing a deal for Gabriel from Villarreal, Wenger is reportedly eyeing versatile Borussia Dortmund player Grosskreutz. Arsene Wenger is also considering moves for Valencia right-back Joao Pereira and AC Milan centre-back Adil Rami before the end of the winter transfer window. Barcelona star Neymar sympathises with his Cristiano Ronaldo's moment of hot-headedness against Cordoba on Saturday but feels that he should be banned Real Madrid could face a transfer ban, similar to the one imposed on Barcelona, after world governing body Fifa opened an investigation into transfers involving under-age players. The club have said they are complying fully with the governing body's investigation and outlined their defence over the 51 players being looked into. Francis Coquelin will make Arsenal sweat by refusing to commit his future to the club . Gunners boss Arsene Wenger revealed on Friday that the 23-year-old defensive midfielder, so impressive in the 2-0 victory over Manchester City last weekend, had been offered a new long-term extension to his contract, which is due to expire in the summer . Coquelin is happy with the terms of the new deal and is keen to stay on at the Emirates, but he will take the coming weeks to *** whether or not Wenger finally sees him as a regular starter before making his final decision. The Frenchman’s future could well hinge on Jack Wilshere’s return to the Arsenal squad after recuperating from the ankle ligament damage he suffered against Manchester United at the end of November. Wilshere's return to the team could signal Coquelin’s return to being just a squad player, which means he will study other offers in the summer when he will be a free agent.
Jorge Mendes has revealed that Arsenal’s inability to sign Cristiano Ronaldo was because of the club’s plans to build the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners were competing with Manchester United to land Ronaldo from Sporting in 2003, while earlier this season Arsene Wenger admitted his “biggest regret” was missing out on the Portugal international. In a new biography that will be released in English this year, titled ‘The Agent One’, Mendes concedes that Arsenal were very close to signing the three-time Ballon d'Or winner before a lack of financial power scuppered the deal. “There was a moment in which I really thought he was going to Arsenal,” said Mendes. “David Dein [Arsenal’s former vice-chairman] is a spectacular person but, with the construction of their stadium, they were left with very little money and it wasn’t possible.” Mendes also revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson’s desire to immediately use Ronaldo in United’s first team was the tipping point in negotiations. “The only ...
Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal missed out on signing Angel Di Maria for NOTHING. Argentinian superstar Di Maria, 26, joins a long list of big names - including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Yaya Toure and Zlatan Ibrahimovic - who nearly joined the Gunners when they were youngsters. Di Maria cost a British record £59.7m when he moved from Real Madrid to Manchester United in the summer, but Wenger admitted they nearly got him when he was just 17. But Wenger says the deal fell through because they could not get Di Maria a work permit - and they now face the same battle as they try to sign Villarreal's Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista. Wenger has called for work permits to be SCRAPPED and borders to be "opened up completely" in football as he claims it is unfair to stop non-European players coming to the Premier League. "We had identified Di Maria when he was 17," he said. "We wanted him to come here. So he goes to Portugal [with Benfica], from Portugal he goes to Spain. Why? Because he could not . ...
Manchester United are making it difficult for Arsenal to sign Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal after joining the race for his services as they prepare to meet his £15million buy-out clause, Express reports. The 24-year-old is already the subject of an earlier bid from Arsene Wenger, involving a loan move for Joel Campbell along with a £5million fee attached to the deal. However, with interest heating up, the La Liga side is now considering a full money offer from either clubs if they are to begin negotiations over the potential switch. Both teams have made a defensive signing a priority during the January window and could be prepared to meet his acceptable fee in light of Paulista's revelation to play in England. He said: “The subject is being discussed by my agent and the club. “If I go to Arsenal it will be excellent. But if it's not finalised then I am relaxed. I am focused on my work here. “My agent is working on making sure I continue being calm. “Playing in the Premier League is one of my ...
Arsene Wenger savoured a landmark away win for his side and said it gave Arsenal greater confidence ahead of a spell that could define the destiny of his team. The Gunners won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium, recording their first away win against Manchester City, Manchester United or Chelsea since 2010. The victory, which was secured by goals from Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud, took Arsenal up to fifth and Wenger said in a news conference: "What is for sure is that it increases the level of belief and confidence. The five months in front of us are very important in the lifespan of the team. What you make of that will decide our season. "We looked in control away from home and we finally got a big win in a big game away from home. What is pleasing is that reinforces the belief of the team." Wenger, whose team conceded 17 goals in their three away games against the top three last season, praised his defence for keeping a clean sheet. He added: "We had a good solidarity level and good compactness. Sometimes, t ...

Jack Wilshere is ahead of schedule in his recovery from serious ankle ligament damage suffered last year, writes Tom Hopkinson in the Sunday People . And that spells good news not only for Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger but England boss Roy Hodgson too. Gunners midfielder Wilshere, who turned 23 on New Year’s Day, was expected to be out for four months after suffering the injury during his side’s clash with Manchester United on November 28 under a challenge from Paddy McNair. However, his rehabilitation has gone so well that he could be back around four weeks earlier than expected. That means Wilshere is set to return a month before England’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley on March 27 and the friendly in Italy four days later. Wenger confirmed: “Jack is progressing quicker than expected – he could be back by the end of February.”
ILKAY GUNNER Arsene Wenger could make a move for versatile Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan after he was issued a contract ultimatum by the German giants, according to the Mirror. It is believed Arsenal club could try to prize one of Jurgen Klopp’s prized assets away from the Signal Iduna Park with a £16m deal. Manchester United were thought to be among the clubs interested in Gundogan in the past, but a poor injury record has seen them, as well as other clubs, shy away from a deal for him. Dortmund want Gundogan, who netted in the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley, to commit his future to the club or face being sold – a move which has alerted potential suitors across Europe.
According to the Express, Arsenal are plotting moves worth a total of £50 million for three players this month. Arsene Wenger's top target for the summer is Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, who is valued at £25million. Arsenal's main midfield target for the winter, however, is Sporting Lisbon's William Carvalho. The Portugal international is also attracting interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, and will cost the Gunners at least £20m. One player who looks certain to line up at the Emirates this month is Saint-Etienne's Loic Perrin. The defender will cost Arsenal £6m, and could be paired with compatriot Laurent Koscielny at the back.

Also on Arsenal's radar is West Ham's Winston Reid.Sam Allardyce has confirmed the defender will be leaving, although Arsene Wenger faces competition from Liverpool and Manchester United for his signature. The Gunners have also been given a massive boost in their pursuit of Edinson Cavani. Manchester United are set to make striker Radamel Falcao's loan deal from Monaco permanent within the coming days after becoming satisfied that the 28-year-old Colombia star is "fully up to scratch physically". Ashley Young, 29, who can play in midfield or as a wing-back, will be out for at least a month because of a hamstring injury. Liverpool are leading the chase to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, 23, after making a permanent offer, while their rivals for the Switzerland star's signature, Inter Milan and Juventus, have only offered loan deals. Manchester United have earmarked Juventus' former United midfielder Paul Pogba, 21, as their main transfer target after being snubbed by Real Madrid's forward pair Cristiano Ronaldo, 29, and Gareth Bale, 25. Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski will travel to Milan on Friday ahead of a possible loan move to Inter, according to Sky sources. Analysis of the latest round of top-flight fixtures, including why Arsenal look the best of the rest 1. Manchester United are real title contenders If it weren't for an inspired display from Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, Manchester United would have won on Sunday. The Frenchman was as brilliant as Manchester United were in the first half at White Hart Lane, denying a number of chances against a team that put in their best display of the season in those first 45 minutes according to Louis Van Gaal. A win would have put them eight points behind Chelsea and well and truly in the title reckoning. As it is they remain 10 points adrift, but look a team only likely to get better as the season goes on. 2. Playing so many games can harm the quality of performances Manchester United's performance level dipped in the second half and it was unsurprising considering they had played just 48 hours previously, like the rest of yesterday's teams. Gus Poyet said the schedule was "inhuman" after his Sunderland side fail ...

Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger remains fully confident of a top-four finish in the Premier League this season. The Gunners climbed to fifth with a 2-1 win at West Ham and are involved in a fierce battle for the Champions League qualifying spots, with Sunday's oppponents, Southampton and Tottenham in the mix. Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United currently lead the chase but Wenger sees no reason why Arsenal will not once again finish in the top four. "We have done it for 17 years, so we are entitled to the belief that we can do it," the Frenchman told reporters. "It's all to do because, when you look at the league, everyone is fighting very hard for it. "Southampton, Tottenham, Manchester United, so many teams who can fight for these positions. I have always had that belief [that a top-four finish is possible] but it's far from done. "We just want to win the next game and be consistent in our performances. BALE TO LEAVE MADRID? Talk of Gareth Bale leaving the Santiago Bernabeu is picking up speed as Spanish paper SPORT report that Real Madrid have already lined up the Welshman's replacement. Apparently Real would be happy to cash in on Bale if they can secure a deal for Marco Reus, who's thought to have a release clause of around £20m in his Borussia Dortmund contract. Real would still demand north of £100m for Bale, however, which leaves Manchester United with a big decision to make following reports that Louis Van Gaal has personally requested the winger. ARSENAL AND LIVERPOOL WANT MILNER According to the Daily Express, Arsenal and Liverpool are both desperate to sign James Milner when his Manchester City contract expires in the summer. Arsenal have joined both Manchester clubs along with Chelsea in the chase to sign Paul Pogba who is highly tipped to become one of the best central midfielders in the world, Express reports. The 21-year-old Juventus star left Manchester United on a free transfer and since put the past behind him to become a vital member for his team's run of Serie A successes. Arsene Wenger believes that the player is exactly what his side is missing and if he could complete the signing, he will have finally succeed in his attempts to find the perfect central midfielder. Elsewhere, Manchester City sees the French international as the perfect candidate to replace Yaya Toure despite the fact that he only recently signed a contract extension with the Serie A side, whom are very unlikely to let him leave. The Blues along with the Red Devils are also closely linked with the Serie A man and could very well spark a huge four-way bidding war during the summer or even as soon as the January window. Premier League TALK: It was a Saturday of the Long Knives as Chelsea's hitherto "unbeaten" record finally came tumbling down like a house of cards at the hands of "minnows" Newcastle United. Not even the tired legs of oldman Didier Drogba could turn around the fortunes of "The Bus" that had already been turned upside down by Senegalese attacker Papisse Cisse as Chelsea mounted a weak "resurgence" that barely lasted 10 minutes resulting in their only goal but still ended up being hit 2-1.After the Chelsea game,it was the turn of the established "Pretenders" to the EPL throne(known to keep position four as theirs for keeps).Arsenal visiting Stoke City (Wana Beba Beba),hoping to win and at least occupy their traditional number four spot but alas!.They were shocked by the fastest goal of the Premier League after langy Peter Crouch scored a goal after only 31 seconds!.Crouch scored the goal even as underperforming Arsene Wenger was walking towards his seat to start "enjoying" the match! At half-time,a resilient ...
UNITED TO KEEP SPENDING Depending on who you believe, Louis Van Gaal will be handed another £100m, £150m or even £200m to spend over the next 12 months as Manchester United continue to throw their weight around in the Transfer Market. Naturally, those rumours have led to a raft of players being linked with the club, with the defence remaining Van Gaal's priority. As well as talk of a move for Mats Hummels, The Sun claim the Dutchman wants Nathaniel Clyne following his impressive performances for Southampton. Kevin Strootman is still thought to be on Van Gaal's shortlist after recovering from the injury that ruled him out of the World Cup, while Diego Godin has also been mentioned. That lot would take United's spending to around £350m in two summer transfer windows. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger hailed "fabulous" Alexis Sanchez after his late strike secured a 1-0 win over Southamptonin the Premier League on Wednesday. The London club looked set to have to settle for a point at the Emirates Stadium as they struggled to break down a spirited and resolute Southampton side. Fraser Forster produced sensational saves to deny Danny Welbeck twice and Olivier Giroud as Arsenal desperately pushed to force a winner which would move them up to sixth place. And it duly arrived one minute from the end, when Chile forward Alexis was on hand to ram home his 14th goal of an impressive debut season in England. Loading... The victory leaves Arsenal two points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester United and Wenger praised the impact his big-money signing has made since his move from Barcelona. Serious Transfer Talk is back for another day of wheeling and dealing as we inch closer to the winter market. Today, we take a look at some of the names cropping up on Arsene Wenger's shortlist. Arsene Wenger's move for Danny Welbeck on transfer deadline this summer was a canny mix of hope and desperation. There's no doubt the Former Manchester United forward has the potential to become a top-class forward, but there is no denying Arsenal need a player for the here and now -- someone such as Edinson Cavani, for instance. The Daily Express reports the PSG forward is open to a move to the Emirates next summer, and with Danny Welbeck being, well, Danny Welbeck and questions over Olivier Giroud's ability at the very top level, Wenger could be tempted to splash the cash once more for a bonafide star up top. The paper suggests that though the Uruguayan professes to be loving life in Paris, he would be open to a move to London, should the opportunity arise. Whether he's worth the reported 50 million-pound fee is ...

Arsene Wenger has once again praised the impact of Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez after the in-form forward helped the Gunners progress to the last-16 of the Champions League. Sanchez has won rave reviews since his £30million summer arrival from Barcelona, and he netted his 13th goal of the season as the North London outfit beat Group D leaders Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium to book their place in the next round. French youngster Yaya Sanogo opened the scoring with his first Arsenal goal, but it was his strike partner who provided the cutting edge for the Gunners. And, asked what the Chilean brought to the team, Wenger said: "Unbelievable fighting spirit and his class as well. “He's a mixture of talent and desire." It was an assured performance from Arsenal, who refused to let their lead slip following the disappointment of the weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, something which pleased Wenger. “We had the focus to defend well together,” the French boss added. "We had a similar ...
London: Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta added to his club`s injury woes as the Spaniard limped off with a calf problem in Wednesday`s 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund. Arteta was replaced in the 67th minute of the Champions League Group D clash and Gunners Manager Arsene Wenger fears he could be sidelined for several weeks. The Former Everton star`s injury comes after Wenger saw England midfielder Jack Wilshere ruled out for a long period with an ankle problem suffered against Manchester United on Saturday. Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is also out with a hip injury sustained against United, while England striker Danny Welbeck missed the Dortmund game with a knee problem. Arteta was joined on Arsenal`s growing injury list by France Under-21 striker Yaya Sanogo, who came off after scoring his first goal for the Gunners. “Arteta again has a calf problem that looks q ...

Arsenal sub Podolski vents frustration 24 Nov | 18:33 © Sapa - AFP Lukas Podolski © Action Images Arsenal's Germany forward Lukas Podolski has repeated his frustrations at being kept on the Gunners' bench, heightening speculation he may leave in January's transfer window. "I like London, I like the club, but I don't like the situation," he told German magazine Kicker having again sat on the bench for Arsenal's 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United. "I'm not some clown who can sit out his contract in the stands." Podolski, who has an Arsenal contract until 2016, has said he will seek talks with coach Arsene Wenger before the January transfer window opens. The German has made just eight appearances for Arsenal this season, only one of which was over 90 minutes, but Wenger has said Podolski is not for sale. Earlier this month, Germany coach Joachim Loew told World Cup winner Podolski to consider his Arsenal future if he wants to keep his place in the national squad after 121 appearances. Loew gave Podolski ...
Mikel Arteta knows Arsenal must be more ruthless after a defeat to Manchester United that the midfielder described as "not fair".United were 2-1 winners at the Emirates Stadium to move above Arsene Wenger's side in the Premier League table on Saturday. Arsenal lost by the same scoreline at Swansea City before the international break and are down in eighth place after the first 12 top-flight games. Captain Arteta felt the defeat was harsh on Arsene Wenger's side, but realises they must make the most of their dominance in matches if they are to challenge for honours. "I'm shocked," said the Former Everton man. "I think we played our best game this season in terms of what we demand of ourselves - the quality in the way we attacked, how we won the ball back, how consistent we were throughout, the amount of chances we created. "When you are in the box and you can't manage to score in that many situations, you can't expect to win. "It's not fair for the players and the fans. How can I explain the result? I can' ...

Gunless Arsenal brought down by United. Wayne Rooney led Manchester United back into the top four of the Premier League with a smash-and-grab 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. On the back of a successful week with England, the United captain secured victory with a coolly-taken 85th- minute chip over Arsenal substitute goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. Rooney's strike added to a comedy own-goal by Kieran Gibbs that saw the left-back deflect Antonio Valencia's cross into his own net after a mix-up with goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who was injured in the process. Olivier Giroud, on as a second-half substitute, replied deep into stoppage time for Arsenal, but United held on to record a first competitive away win since April 5. The victory took Louis Van Gaal's side back into the Champions League places, 13 points behind leaders Chelsea. Man U vs Chelsea Super Sunday: Will Manchester United end Chelsea's unbeaten run? By James Ogunjimi Tomorrow, Sunday 26th October 2014, against Chelsea, Manchester United will attempt to repeat a feat they performed 10 years ago when they halted the invincible Arsenal's 49-match unbeaten run. On Sunday October 24, 2004, Arsene Wenger's Arsenal side, boasting a 49-match unbeaten run including 3 wins against Chelsea fell to a determined Manchester United side, thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney and Van Nistelrooy. "I must say, though, that Wenger's reign at Arsenal deserves a special mention. "Everyone was happy for him winning the FA Cup. I was hoping Steve Bruce would win it for Hull because he was one of my players, but you also had to have a special feeling for Arsene, given the pressure he was under for not winning a trophy for nine years." 1. Lionel Messi (Argentina & Barcelona) Clive Rose / Getty Images The triple World Player of the Year, Messi appears to get better with each passing season and is already Barcelona's record goalscorer. Although not an out-and-out striker, he operates in Barcelona's front three and in the 2011-12 campaign he set a new world record by scoring 73 times in a single season. Messi also dovetails beautifully with his Barca team-mates, and is a hard worker to boot. However, his indifferent form for Argentina means he has often borne the brunt of criticism from the fans and media. One senses there is a lot more to come from Messi in the national team. Ads 2. Robin Van Persie (Netherlands & Manchester United) Getty Images Sir Alex Ferguson swooped to sign the Dutch striker after his best ever club season. In an interview last year he said: “The main factor in joining Arsenal was meeting with Arsene Wenger and to hear what his plans where for me. The player's entourage are of the view that Old Trafford is his most likely destination, despite interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and others Cesc Fabregas' entourage still believe that Manchester United is the Spain midfielder's most likely destination this summer, MirrorSport understands. The former Arsenal skipper has been told by Barcelona that he can leave the club for £30million and his representatives have contacted top clubs across Europe to evaluate their interest. And while Fabregas has received the firmest overtures from Zenit St Petersburg and Milan, the Spaniard has told clubs he is set on a move back to the Premier League. Those closest to the Barca star have received positive overtures from the Old Trafford outfit, but transfers this summer will be at the behest of Louis Van Gaal who is currently more keen on alternative midfield targets, meaning Chelsea also remains a possible destination should Jose Mourinho fail to complete his desired business. REASONS WHY ARSENAL SHOULD NOT BRING BACK CESC FABRIGAS Many have been quick to endorse the proposed move, but the signing makes little sense for this Arsenal squad. First, there's the obvious issue about where Fagregas would fit in a team already loaded with playmakers. Fabregas is a classy pass master, at his best hovering between midfield and forward lines, exposing defensive gaps with clever through passes. But that is now the remit of ex-Real Madrid No. 10 Mesut Ozil. Manager Arsene Wenger paid £42.5 million last summer for Ozil to play between the lines. Trying to accommodate two like-minded schemers in the same position is certain to create imbalance within the team. Andres Kudacki/Associated Press With Mesut Ozil in the fold, Arsenal don't need Fabregas. Fabregas was once part of that very problem. He featured in a team containing too many players in his mold. That's a dynamic for which ex-Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson criticised Wenger in his memoirs, per Daniel Taylor of The Observer ...

Wilshere gets help from critic Scholes Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has sought advice on how to improve his game from Paul Scholes in the wake of the Former Manchester United man criticising his lack of progress. "He was right in a certain way," said Wilshere, who made his England debut at 18. "We had quite a good chat. "He explained it a bit better and told me what he thought I should work on." Wilshere made 24 league appearances for Arsenal this season as the Gunners finished in the Champions League qualification spots for the 17th consecutive year. Arsene Wenger's side looked likely to launch a title challenge, but heavy defeats by Liverpool and Chelsea hampered their campaign. A 2-2 draw with Swansea prompted Scholes to be critical of both Arsenal and Wilshere while working as a pundit for Sky Sports, views which Wenger strongly disagreed with. "When I first burst onto the scene there was all this noise and then I got injured," added Wilshere, who says he spoke to his family and contacted Gary Nev ...

And it's Baggio making his way. The divine ponytail, making his way. And Robinson, very much in the image of the beautiful young man much preferred by Arsene Wenger. He cuts a svelte, lithe figure. The young Australian, I'm told, has been working very hard at mastering running at pace while balancing his huge nose with the back of his head. And he gets a chance tonight with Arsenal, very much in control, six goals on the board, and Manchester United yet to score.
