Robert H. Bork, distinguished jurist and author, passed away today at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA. He was of age. In addition to being a staunch advocate of Constitutional originalism (the idea that the Founders and Writers of the Constitution had said and written what they meant, regardless of how later persons "interpreted" their words), Judge Bork was a Yale Law School Professor (not guest lecturer), Solicitor General of the United States, Acting Attorney General, and Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. In 1987 he was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan. What ensued in the Senate confirmation hearings was, in all likelihood, the beginning of what is now the favored political tactic of the Democrat Party...that is, character assasination.
