Today I joined Anna Deavere Smith and movement consultant Michael Leon Thomas at a New York City private school, where we are working on training teachers to access empathy using theatre tools. Their students are lucky to have teachers so dedicated to growth and betterment that they will give up days and even weeks of their scarce free time to take a workshop like this one. I salute these teachers, who showed up willing to be students once again. I'd like to see more supportive programs like this for public-school teachers. Perhaps they exist and I'm just not yet aware of them. I truly hope so. YAY, TEACHERS!

I went to see a fantastic one-person play called "No Room for Wishing" based on real discussions that took place during Occupy Boston. Keep your eyes and ears open for future showings of the play. It's done similiarly to Anna Deavere Smith's work. She takes an event that has already happened, interviews people and has the different voices describe the event from different perspectives. Danny, who wrote the Occupy play, taped people as the events were unfolding and plays real people saying things they said during one period of Occupy's existence.
Anna Deavere Smith was so solid last night in Finney Chapel, with her bull rider on health care, her South African Aids orphanage worker, her Lubbite who couldn't turn off the radio, her wonderful quote on the moment when the soul sits up.

First of the series- very moving. In the spring of 2012, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, CENTERSTAGE asked 50 of the country's leading playwrights to answer a simple question: What is my America? These 50 monologues, ranging from the political to the personal, form a tapestry of ideas and explore our particular American moment--the people and notions that make the country what it is today. The responses, by writers including Anna Deavere Smith, Neil LaBute, Christopher Durang, and Lynn Nottage, will be released on our special My America website: centerstage.org/myamerica. The first set is now live and the remaining will be released on Tuesdays running through Election Day. You can sign up to receive updates when each batch of videos are released, join the conversation by sharing the videos, and learn about the playwrights.
"So you ask about a defining moment — ain’t no defining moment in American history for me. It’s an accretion of moments that add up to where we are now, where trivia becomes news. And more and more, less and less awareness of the pain of the other." ~ TEDTalk with Anna Deavere Smith

Power of healing, as lead by Anna Deavere Smith Chris Jones Theater critic 10:36 a.m. CDT, May 19, 2012 Anna Deavere Smith has, in essence, combined a career doing serious, interview-based theater work like "Fires in the Mirror" and "Twilight: Los Angles" with more lucrative acting gigs on TV shows like "The West Wing" and, currently, "Nurse Jackie." Watching her perform for — and rev up — a couple of thousand nurses in Chicago Friday night, though, suggested that Smith might well be a good leftist candidate to run for office. Few think of her that way. Perhaps they should. At one point in the colossal main ballroom at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers — packed to the gills with members of National Nurses United — Smith persuaded the assembled nurses to stand, find three or four fellow nurses they did not know, look each nurse in the eye and say to each one in turn, "We need you to heal this country." "I believe that nurses have a power that we have not even begun to tap into in America," Smith shoute ...
