ANGELA BOFILL - Raised in New York by a Cuban father and a Puerto Rican mother, Angela Bofill was a student of many styles of music, from the latin sounds played regularly by her family to the soul and jazz sounds of her neighborhood in the Bronx. She began singing professionally as a teenager as a member of New York's All City Voices and as featured lead soloist for the Dance Theater of Harlem. After completing her studies in California, Bofill was introduced by her friend, jazz flutist Dave Valentin, to Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen of GRP records, and they signed her for her 1978 debut, Angie. The album was a breakout smash on contemporary jazz radio and the tastefully arranged jazz vocal disc showed a gifted young artist with a rich voice beyond her years. Come Hear a History of Jazz! The Friends of the Cranford Public Library invite you to hear a “History of Jazz" on Wednesday, August 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cranford Community Center. The program will be presented by trumpeter/flugelhornist and vocalist Gordon James. Mr. James, who will be accompanied on piano, will trace the history of jazz while touching upon the giants of the genre. The program will feature musical selections spanning the entire history of jazz. Mr. James has performed with the Thad Jones Mel Lewis Big Band, the Harry James Tribute Band, vocalist Bobby Caldwell, saxophonists Eric Kloss and Paul Winter, cellist David Darling, the Soul Survivors, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Angela Bofill, and Chuck Loeb. Admission to the program is free and all are welcome.

Last night I watched recordings of the Unsung episodes on both Angela Bofill and Phyllis Hyman. Both of these extremely talented songbirds shared some things in common, with Sly Stone and Whitney Houston. They were all clients of Clive Davis. All of these stars suffered from some form of addiction or mental instability at some point in their careers. The list also includes Janis Joplin. Clive Davis seems to be a central figure in the lives of these very talented stars, and each one of them spiraled out of control while under the thumb of his control. Someone should look into this connection.

Last night I watched Angela Bofill on "Unsung." The two strokes she's suffered have affected her speech and are keeping her from singing. Her last words on the show: "if you're still breathing, what are you complaining about? Move on." I was trying to focus on that when I woke up in a funk this morning, and then I saw this picture. My life is good. I am blessed. And I should be living, not moping. God bless both Angela and this little girl.

I'm watching TV One's "UnSung" featuring Angela Bofill. WO, THIS WOMAN! My mom was a huge fan of hers back in the day, which meant Angela Bofill's music played in the house constantly and she became one of the artists I was exposed to very early on.
