Andy Warhol American artist Born in 6 August 1928 – Died in 22 February, 1987 was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became a renowned and sometimes controversial artist. The Andy Warhol Museum in his native city, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, holds an extensive permanent collection of art and archives. It is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist. Warhol's art used many types of media, including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film, and music. He was also a pioneer in computer-generated art using Amiga computers that were introduced in 1984, two years before his death. He founded Interview Magazine and was the author of numerous books, including The Philosophy of Andy Warhol and Popism: The ...

The influence of William Burroughs on popular culture has been enormous: the Beatles, the Stones, Andy Warhol, the Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Keith Haring, David Cronenberg and Sonic Youth have all paid homage to the Beat writer in various media. While Burroughs' life story and sexual/narcotic proclivities have had their own legacy, the "cut-up" method that he developed in the 1960s with his friend Brion Gysin has proved his most generative legacy. Writers, musicians and artists of all kinds have adopted this chance procedure, which involves the cutting and splicing of language--or image, or sound--to produce unexpected conjunctions and scramble consensus reality. "The cut-up is actually closer to the facts of perception than representational painting," Burroughs wrote of the method. "Take a walk down a city street and put down what you have just seen on canvas . . . consciousness is a cut up." This compendium of Burroughs' artwork, collages, cut-ups, scrapbooks, photographs, films, ephemera and pai ...

Andy Warhol spent much of his childhood bedridden as a result of the effects of scarlet fever. Teased at school because of his blotchy skin, Warhol found sanctuary in the art room. When he was 12 years old Warhol spent several months working on a painting that he was extremely proud of. But just as he was applying the finishing touches, his father died. Then when he came back to school after the funeral, he found that his painting had been taken. When he burst into tears whilst explaining what had happened, his mother said, "Wow! It must have been fantastic for someone to want to risk getting caught stealing it and being expelled from school. I can't wait to see you're next painting." From that moment young Warhol chose to be an artist. Within the space of three years, Fauja Singh had lost his wife, a daughter and a son. He was 84 years old and was consoled by other elderly folk who had also lost loved ones. Singh noticed that most of the elderly wounded healers who counseled him, whilst well intentioned, ...

Brendor Grosvenor's site is surely worth a read when it comes to old masters. But when he tackles CyTwombly, it is, at best and to remain polite, saddening and ignorant. Asking how many loops Twombly painted is like asking how many self-portraits Rembrandt painted or how many water-lilies there are by Monet, or better, how many "tedious" abstractions Mondrian painted...Anyway, read this if you like... Guffwatch - Cy Twombly edition November 16 2014 Pictures: Christie's One of the attractions of contemporary art, from the market's point of view, is the fact that so much of it comes in 'series'. An example is Andy Warhol's 'Elvis' paintings, one of which, a 'Triple Elvis', sold last week at Christie's in New York for a record $82m. These series translate, financially, into readily identifiable units in which the only thing that matters is the price made by the last one. So if a Warhol 'Triple Elvis' is now worth $82m, then we can adjust the value of all the other Elvis paintings accordingly. I don't know ** ...

Birkbeck alumna Mary Pritchard's exhibition - Under the Microscope - 5-22 Nov at Artisan Gallery - goes under the microscope with Mary Pritchard this November. Mary's exhibition is based on archival material relating to her mother, Olive Elizabeth Aykroyd, and is a homage to what she gave and taught her. Mary puts her mother's early life 'Under the Microscope'. Olive was born in Dublin, Ireland over a 100 years ago and was exceptional in many ways. She went to Trinity College Dublin in the 1930's and obtained a PhD in Zoology at a time when it was unusual for women to pursue a scientific career. Her research contributed to the expansion of the subject at that time. However, after she married and had a family she did not return to her research. Mary has found her mother's original laboratory slides from the 1930s a rich source of inspiration and for this exhibition she has re-interpreted them and re-presented them in a variety of ways - using both old and new technology. From cyanotypes (a very early form ...

Blue-chip offerings at NYC fall art auctions New York (AP) - The fall art auctions are about to sizzle. Coveted paintings by Andy Warhol and Edouard Manet - never before offered at auction - and works from single-owner collections with boldface names like Mellon and Bacall are expected to fire up bidding at the sales of impressionist, contemporary and modern art beginning Tuesday. "The fall auctions represent a rare opportunity for contemporary collectors to add not only quality but also pedigree to their collections," said Sarah Lichtman, director of The New School's master's degree program in the history of decorative arts and design. The exceptional quality of the works could mean a record-setting autumn, said Pat Berman, professor of art at Wellesley College. "The heights reached by Edvard Munch's "The Scream" or Francis Bacon's "Three Studies of Lucien Freud" - once beyond comprehension - are certainly attainable, and potentially eclipsed by these rare art trophies," she said. "The Scream" sold for n ...

Todays film is Videodrome directed by David Cronenberg and starring James Woods. Videodrome - Max Renn runs a TV channel, and when looking for new material to show--he discovers "Videodrome." His girlfriend, Nicki Brand, goes to audition for the show, and Max gets drawn into the underlying plot that uses the show as its front for a global conspiracy. Did you know : Andy Warhol called the movie "A Clockwork Orange (1971) of the 1980s". Three different endings were filmed. The ending used in the film was James Woods's idea. The character of Brian O'Blivion is based on Marshall McLuhan. David Cronenberg was a student of McLuhan's during college. During filming of the Cathode Ray mission sequence, the film's gaffer, Jock Brandis, walked in and casually informed the crew that the power lines to the building were smoking because of the load imposed on them by the TV sets. Ready to Speak And Paul said, “I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today, might become both almost and altogether such as I am, except for these chains.” Acts 26:29 Recommended Reading Acts 5:27-29 The American pop artist Andy Warhol wrote in 1968, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” From that statement came the now famous reference to “15 minutes of fame”—a moment when someone finds himself in the spotlight. What would we do or say if we suddenly found ourselves with a captive audience? That is, if you had one thing you could tell the world, what would it be? The spotlight can cause some people to lose their nerve and freeze—but not the apostle Paul. On the several occasions he found himself standing before authorities with a captive audience, he never failed to declare the Gospel of Jesus Christ and encourage those listening to believe in Him (Acts 21:27–22:21; 23:1-11; 24:10-21; 26:1-29; 28:17-31). And the same thing will happen in the ...

Undervalued Treasure Read Zechariah 11:1 through 14:21 A garage sale shopper paid five dollars for art that turned out to be an original Andy Warhol sketch valued at two million dollars. A family picked up an ancient Chinese bowl at another garage sale for less than three dollars and sold it for $2.2 million. Why would anyone put a yard-sale price tag on a priceless treasure? They failed to recognize the value of what they had. I told them, “If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12). Serving as a symbol of Christ, Zechariah asked his listeners to pay him what they thought he was worth. The people disrespectfully gave him thirty pieces of silver, a slave’s price. This prophecy was fulfilled when Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus for the same paltry amount. Many people still fail to acknowledge Jesus’ worth. They daily pass by His outstretched arms to pursue things of no lasting value. Don’t make such a tragic and costly mista ...

Thank you again to everyone who came out to our event on June 12th, it was a wild success! If you missed it...I'm really sorry. I came home tonight from a screening of the new Yves Saint Laurent biopic to find that my friend Wilson Kidde had posted a couple of old photos of Henry Geldzahler and me from a brunch we were all having at the old Paris Commune in New York City circa 1981. I had just been reading this morning the section of my next book that is all about Henry. It is in the chapter called The Mentor. He is also woven into the chapter called The Factory Worker in which I write about my time working for Andy Warhol as Executive Editor of Interview magazine. Henry was the person who first introduced me to Andy as he did to so many people back when he cut me out of the herd and gathered me into his rarified fold of artists and doyennes and others who made up the cultural realm of the city. I was only 25 years old but Henry made sure I was literally given a place at the table in such a world. He'd take me to many events and parties and dinners with him and make a mischievous point of changing his place card with mine and ...

Isabelle Collin Dufresne, the French-born artist known as Ultra Violet, one of Andy Warhol's "Superstars", dies at 78
A fellow reviewer and friend of mine has a rule that applies to watching comedy. It is his tried and true, "10 Chuckle Ratio." If a comedy has at least ten, you can unequivocally say that it is, indeed, funny. That ratio was reached in just Act One/Scene One of the Crowded Kitchen Players' production of Alexander Ostrovsky's "ToClever By Half." Directed by Ara Barlieb, "Half" is the story of Yegor Gloumov, a poor man who uses deception and connivery to rise through the ranks of Russian high society. Barlieb's adaptation is an indictment of that society's membership, and the comedy that ensues from their ignorance flows from the page to the actors to the audience. Barlieb has concocted an experience which blurs the lines of the space-time continuum between 1860'sCzarist Russia and the swinging 60's of Andy Warhol and Austin Powers. Before the first word of dialogue is even spoken, the audience is already immersed in the era by the visage of Nora Oswald's sublime paintings. They evoke both the ...
Sissy Spacek (born Mary Elizabeth Spacek, December 25, 1949) is an American actress and singer. She came to international prominence for her roles as Holly Sargis in Terrence Malick's film Badlands (1973) and as Carrie White in Brian De Palma's horror film Carrie (1976, based on the first novel by Stephen King), for which she earned her first Academy Award nomination. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as country star Loretta Lynn in the film Coal Miner's Daughter (1980) and received Oscar nominations for her roles in Missing (1982), The River (1984), Crimes of the Heart (1986), and In the Bedroom (2001). Spacek worked for a time as photographic model and as an extra at Andy Warhol's Factory. She appeared in a non-credited role in his film Trash (1970). With the help of Rip Torn, she enrolled in Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio and then the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York. Her first credited role was in the cult classic Prime Cut (1972), in which she played Poppy, a girl sold into se ...

Some poor so called football fans, especially the Argentine always try to dethrone The King of Football-Pele. Here is a pure reply for them_ 1) "Pelé is the greatest player of all time. He reigned supreme for 20 years. All the others – Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini – rank beneath him. There's no one to compare with Pelé." —West Germany's 1974 FIFA World Cup-winning captain Franz Beckenbauer. 2) "Pelé was one of the few who contradicted my theory: instead of 15 minutes of fame, he will have 15 centuries." — Andy Warhol. 3) "My name is Ronald Reagan, I’m the President of the United States of America. But you don’t need to introduce yourself, because everyone knows who Pelé is." —U.S. President Ronald Reagan greets Pelé at the White House. 4) “Pelé was the only footballer who surpassed the boundaries of logic.” — Johan Cruyff. 5) “His great secret was improvisation. Those things he did were in one moment. He had an extraordinary perception of the game.” — Brazil ...

So, here are a few things I learned while in New York, today: New Yorkers are *** However, if you can forgive them that long enough to force a conversation, they are not an unlikable peoples. There is a strictly enforced dress code in New York of ill fitting suits or 1970's jogging apparel. The buildings in New York were all designed by either Ivo Shandor as a way to channel supernatural energy to summon Zool or by Andy Warhol to spite Ivo Shandor. And, they are all impressively beautiful. There are no gas stations in New York. Cars, there, are fueled by rage and chaos. There are also no grocery stores in New York. But, that is okay because even the dirtiest, cheapest, hole-in-the-wall joints know how to do food right! No one in New York knows how to properly play the saxophone. In New York, having "Played Carnegie Hall" on your resume' affords you the opportunity to plink out show tunes to an unresponsive crowd at a mediocre steak house.
For all those people that are looking to take a selfie to the next level How to Take a Professional Selfie What do Rembrandt, President Obama, Andy Warhol and Madonna have in common? Of course, each of these people is—or was—world famous. But after fame and fortune, the similarities fade. The answer is that at some point in their lives, all these people made selfies. Whether they used oil on canvas, acrylic on silkscreen or a cell phone camera, each sidestepped the middleman by creating self-portraits. Impromptu snapshots of unique meetings or perfectly positioned pieces of art, the resulting images are fascinating. Why? Because selfies show people through their own eyes—not through those of a professional portrait artist or photographer. So what does this mean for today’s job seeker? It’s simple: adding a selfie to your professional profile can wrestle your profile pic out of the headlock of a stuffy, self-conscious studio shot and into the unlimited possibilities of your own personal art direc ...

LOVE at first sight It is the pop artist's most famous painting but Robert Indiana's LOVE began as a 1965 Christmas card design for New York's Museum of Modern Art. (Morgan Art Foundation) Robert Indiana’s LOVE painting may be the 20th century’s most recognisable work of art, but it earned the artist neither respect nor profit. At last, a new retrospective places him at the center of American pop art. What is the single most famous artwork of the 20th century? Your first inclination, answering that faintly silly question, might be to think of the most famous artists of the 20th century and go from there. But while Pablo Picasso or Jackson *** or Andy Warhol may have instantly recognizable styles, no single painting of theirs has been as endlessly reproduced, as widely circulated, as frequently spoofed, and as rapaciously merchandised as a work of art by someone whose name you might not even know. Robert Indiana, now 85 years old, may not command the same recognition as his pop art confreres, but L ...
