Exhibit recreates Warhol’s 1964 World’s Fair mural NEW YORK (AP) — Even for a 1964 New York World’s Fair that celebrated “The World of Tomorrow,” Andy Warhol may have been ahead of his time. His monumental piece commissioned specifically for the fair — a mural depicting mug shots of the New York Police Department’s 13 most-wanted criminals — was deemed too edgy for the family friendly event and was painted over just before opening day. Now, 50 years later, the work is the focus of a museum exhibition being staged on the very fairgrounds where the pop-art provocateur was censored. “There’s no question Warhol was not interested in the notion of a family friendly fair,” said Larissa Harris, the exhibition’s curator. “It’s possible that he understood the concept very clearly, but he did this absolutely intentionally.” The exhibition, “13 Most Wanted Men: Andy Warhol and the 1964 World’s Fair,” opens April 27 at the Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Second poem after another round of revision. This is for my final project this semester, so any feedback is welcomed! Ode to Warhol’s Superstar, Candy Darling The salute of a breast, the bow of a wrist, erection of waist, and looseness of hips Her fire engine lips slit open to show her tongue, just the tip and some teeth below Her slender waist waves like grass in the sea, a rhythm I crave but it will never be for her erectness’ much more than effective tight-lacing still, (not lust-less) I adore the (un)bosomed deity I’m facing. *Candy Darling was made a star by Andy Warhol. What made her different from his other muses was the fact that she successfully presented herself as a woman though she was, in fact, male.

I wrote several books on Shirley Temple you are allowed to write and make reference to "Famous People" as long as you do it tastefully and without financial gain but in the art world you are allowed to create in the likeness of famous people- Andy Warhol painted and depicted thousands of celebrities so does Annie Leibowitz you just have to have disclaimers saying it is not an official Nicolas Cage event
After watching the film "I shot Andy Warhol" I would say that Miley Cyrus is a modern day feminist. *drops mic and runs away*
Wow! How amazing are Faith's eggs? Based on the work of Julia Donaldson & Andy Warhol!
Andy Warhol would be pleased for me - were he still alive to bask in the pleasantness of course. I've managed to beat his immortal 15 minutes of fame; how's that immortality working for you Andy? Yes folks, I made it onto RocKwiz Tueday night. Don't exactly know when it's going to be on but was advised that it'd probably be in 3-4 weeks (so that may mean 3-10 or more weeks in TV time-frame speak.) Special thanks to Jeanette (girlfriend, agent and especially fashion stylist.) Watch out for the quite fabulous paisley shirt (methinks it's actually the real star of the appearance) with me playing second banana inside of it. I even got to answer a few questions on behalf of the shirt... Sorry to Leyna Buller, Sarah Buller & Lachlan for not pulling it out of the bag the first time around a few weeks ago. This appearance is dedicated to you. After this height of fame I'm ready to start my band. 'From Here To Nadir' - sure to release a killer one hit wonder song...& there's no shame in that!
MORE ART FOR ART'S SAKE By Eddy Hawks Los Angeles, CA., April 9, 2014 -- When an artist becomes engrossed in the act of creating art, they can get into a rhythm whereby productivity goes up and many creations are born. There are many artists who have been prolific such as Marc Chagall, Gustav Klimt, Pablo Picasso, Jackson *** Henri Matisse, Rainer Maria Rilke, Auguste Rodin, William Shakespeare and Andy Warhol. There are many reasons for this. The artist will sell more art, gain popularity and become happier, for when an artist creates a new piece, they feel happy. It is as simple as that. Through the process of making something, the artist becomes filled with a sense of accomplishment, growth and development. Yesterday, Kat Hawks of American Ballet of Los Angeles and ABLA International created two new paintings called "Red River" and "Buddha's Forest" and I painted two called "Blue Prophecy" and "Fleur de Bien". According to Kat Hawks, "artists have a calling and yearning to create work which will m ...

Sadly, we have three entertainment deaths to report about tonight: Mickey Rooney, John Pinette and Leee Black Childers. In no particular order, here is a (very) brief recapitulation on each gentleman... Mickey rooney, 93 was an acting legend. He worked in the entertainment business for almost his whole life and was known by many generations for his countless movie and television appearances. Mr. Rooney, born Joseph Yule Jr. in Brooklyn New York, was married eight times and had nine children. His most famous ex-wife was the lovely Ava Gardner. Leee Black Childers was a punk icon. Throughout the 1960's & 1970's he was known for his association with Andy Warhol, Glam rock, Punk rock, and his photography. He also managed Johnny Thunders and the heartbreakers. Mr. Childers is most well known for his work behind the camera, and his images of David Bowie, Lou Reed, Debbie Harry, Sex Pistols and many others. John Pinette, 50, was a very funny Comedian and Actor. He was known for his TV, movie and stand-up comedy ...

The name "Autism" didn't exist until 1944 (70 years). There are some high functioning autistic (or Asperger Syndrome - an autism spectrum) celebrities and well known people who you may know: Mozart (classical music composer) Albert Einstein (scientist and genius) Daryl Hannah (actress) Tim Burton (film director) Andy Warhol (artist) Courtney Love (wife of Kurt Cobain) Dan Aykroyd (director and actor) I have three autistic family members who just as normal as can be. So It's world Autism awareness day today! Lots of people think Autistic people are less intelligent and never able to live independently but you'd be wrong! Most Autism was undiagnosed until very very recently with only the less functioning end of the Spectrum being noticed. it goes back generations in some families, including mine- most undiagnosed. Below are a list of people who changed our cultures for the better and they all have Autism - some confirmed some suspected based on evidence. A certain TV show had some reveals and curveballs that screwed with people's emotions and left everyone with bittersweet feels? Apparently some have had some choice things to say about that. I've got a choice 4-letter word for it: LIFE. That being said, it's funny when life mirrors art mirroring life mirroring art, in a Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol kinda way, isn't it?

I will not miss Fred Phelps. But frankly I don't wish anyone to suffer eternally. I believe more in "Do unto others..." So to treat him as I would be wish to be treated myself, I wish him... A really nice long concert... Freddy Mercury would be perfect as the front man. Hanging out with some famous poets, artists, and thinkers would be awesome... a century or two at table with Kevyn AuCoin, Andy Warhol, Virginia Woolf, Walt Whitman, Alexander McQueen, Leonardo DaVinci, Josephine Baker, Michaelangelo, Oscar Wilde, Frida Kahlo... you get the idea. And a few other luminaries might make it interesting... maybe when I'm done with artists and philosophers...I would want to hash it out with the heavyweights. I think I would wish the same thing for Fred. Maybe a millennium long talk with Jesus of Nazareth, but since I (and Fred) know a fair amount about him...he can sit at the other end of the table...I want the ones closer to be Siddartha, Mohammed, Lao Tzu, and Confuscious. And face it... I am who I am. I am a ...

Yellowjeff – Solo exhibition yellowjeff was born in Taiwan in 1984, Yellow is his family name in Chinese. yellowjeff’s foray into art came to a dramatic halt when he was a child after his school teacher found a portrait he had drawn of him and slapped him hard across the face. It wasn’t until he attended university that he undertook life drawing lessons, as he studied communication design in Shih Chien University in Taiwan. He found drawing the face to be the most interesting aspect of drawing, due to the way it deals with expression. One day after class he was asked by a classmate to draw his portrait, then more and more people around him started requesting them. This began his devotion to portraiture. yellowjeff’s work has been influenced by Egon Schiele, Andy Warhol and Expressionism. He mixes traditional drawing materials that create a symbiotic result in application. Oil paint mixed with crayon and watercolours are applied together through different techniques, that mesh and drip whilst takin ...
ALWAYS SAY LESS THAN NECESSARY Transgression of the Law. Coriolanus was a great military hero of ancient Rome. People held him in awe, until he opened his mouth. He spoke his mind, hardly able to control his arrogance and boastfulness. He slandered and insulted people. The more speeches he made, the less people respected him. He suffered the people’s wrath and was eventually banished from the city. • Observance of the Law Masters of enigma Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp knew the power of saying less and keeping people guessing. The less Duchamp talked about his work, the more it was talked about in the art circles. Andy Warhol recognized it was hard to talk people into doing what you wanted, so when interviewed, he would give vague and ambiguous answers and let the interviewer find his own interpretation. Wisdom in a nutshell: • Saying less will keep you from saying something foolish or even dangerous. • Once the words are out you cannot take them back. • Keeping silent makes people reveal mor . ...
What would happen if the worlds most famous artists where to design a house in their signature style: Italian architect and illustrator Federico Babina reinterpreted iconic works from artists including Piet Mondrian, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Marcel Duchamp and many more, as cross-sectional drawings of buildings. "Archist" is a collection of 27 images, playfully interpreting the styles and themes of some of the world's greatest artists including Picasso, Salvador Dali and Joan Miro, and imagines them as architectural forms. Babina explores the symbiotic relationship between architecture and art, and how they would interact with each other. "Art and architecture are disciplines that speak and lightly touch each other,” explained Babina. "The definition and function of architecture is changing constantly with the development of contemporary art." The artist tried to imagine what a house designed by Dali or a museum designed by Miro might look like. "A sculpture is like a micro-architecture, a facade can ...

Three things: I the only person who will spend nearly the whole night picking up Legos and broken electronics after a two week period of neglect and have it look worse than when I began? 2. Why would auto zone hire people who not only know less than me about my car but know less about engines and parts and components in general. Can't they at least feign a thoughtful look instead of shaking their heads like I accidentally walked into a McDonald's or a Gap store and what would they know of such matters. 3. Skinny jeans/pants. Do we think they're going the way of legwarmers and shoulder pads soon or what. Because I'm about tired of dealing with getting them situated just to look like an Andy Warhol fanatic who missed the memo that he's not all that cutting edge anymore. Or maybe Michael stipe devotee. saw its share of strife and turmoil. The current events of the time included an Amtrak train crash, the Iran-Contra affair, the Unabomber bombing Salt Lake City and the Black Monday stock market crash on October 19th. Add in a typhoon in the Philippines and two different plane crashes and it’s no wonder that this was also the year that Prozac hit the market for the first time. It wasn’t all doom and gloom, though. Aretha Franklin finally got the respect she deserved by being the first woman to be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. The Bangles had us all Walking like an Egyptian while Bon Jovi has us Living on a Prayer. We got introduced to Johnny Depp as 21 Jump Street hit the small screen and Patrick Dempsey as he tried to buy love on the big screen. Day in Music History for March 12: On this day - - in 1967, The Velvet Underground release their debut album The Velvet Underground and Nico (also called the Andy Warhol album or the Banana album). The band spent 4 days in a run down studio in NYC and then sent the results to various record labels. Almost all declined, but they were finally able to get signed to jazz label Verve Records. When it was finally released, the album was a total failure. Radio stations wouldn't play it because they thought the lyrics about sadomasochism, drug addiction, and sex work were too obscene. Verve barely promoted the album at all. Most of the major rock journals didn't even notice the album. It actually didn't start to be noticed until almost a decade later because of later Velvet Underground releases (at which point, everyone said they'd always loved it and praised its influence on rock). However, the early failure led the band to fire Andy Warhol as their manager and boot Nico out of the band. - in 1971, the Allman Br ...

Hunting for the next Andy Warhol could mean not only finding works for $1,000 or less but also earning a fortune from your investment twenty years down the track. If an emerging artist develops a successful career then their works skyrocket in value. Jeff Koons’ statue Balloon Dog (Orange) broke world records last year at a Christie’s auction when it sold for $58.4m. But when he was starting out as an artist, his work sold for a fraction: as little as $3,000 in 1985.

In the late 60's, Andy Warhol produced a cruel send-up of Hedy Lamarr that now seems quite uncalled for.
Taken from "What Do You Know" by Jaime O'Neill.the following blew me away. From college students from the 1980's a compilation of what students "knew" about their heritage & their planet: "A long time ago, in the 17th century, Christ was born. At that time, Dwight Eisenhower was president of the US, but he often took vacations at Camp David in Israel near Christ's birthplace. In fact, a lot of stuff was happening around this time. For instance, Charles Darwin invented gravity, which made a lot of people more down-to-earth. This invention was quite popular, as revealed by the Gallup "poles." Meanwhile, in Rio de Janeiro in France, Napoleon, a Russian, was planning to invade Leningrad, Germany. About this same time, Andy Warhol was writing his masterpiece, "War and Peace", from his home in Stratford-upon-Avon, Germany." Is goes on.this was really written by students. This book is so much fun. I am enjoying it. Will def pass this one on to someone else to enjoy!

Tears. I went there regularly in 1965-66, they had the best coffee coming out of the coolest chrome art nouveau spouts! Prior for me in NJ, it was all Maxwell House in proctor/gamble percolators (still nostalgic for me). When they closed, along with Schraffts (sp?), it really signaled the end of an era of a casual but elegant afternoon leisure affordable by add to the irreplaceable loss, this was the 3 year period when the old Metropolitan Opera was closed and razed, replaced by the imposing and perfect but soulless Lincoln Center compound. There was even an effort to close Carnegie Hall. Then Andy Warhol took center stage, Bauhaus resurged, plastic reigned, and economics, efficiency and speed became the measure of culture. A rare exhibition of Andy Warhol’s photographic portraits will be held at the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center.  Sessions with Andy: Warhol Photography from the University of South Carolina Upstate opens in the Kimbrough Gallery on March 6th. Andy Warhol is best known for his Pop Art paintings of Campbell’s Soup cans and Marilyn Monroe.  While the iconic celebrity paintings began with appropriated media photographs that were silk-screened onto a canvas, the commissioned works began with a Polaroid photo-session with Warhol. The museum exhibition contains some of these serial photographs and presents the viewer several photographs exhibiting only minor changes from one image to the next. They are hung in the gallery to imitate the repetition often seen in Warhol’s celebrity portraits. In an attempt to make his work mechanical, Warhol had turned to the Polaroid camera and tape recorder to more objectively document American life as he saw it. The images in this exhibition are documents of his m ...

Warhol’s parting gift: the all-black cover idea for their follow-up – the album they would name White Light/White Heat. Meanwhile, the band scrabbled to survive in the drug-soaked art-scene demi-monde of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. “Our lives were chaos,” VU guitarist Sterling Morrison told me in 1994. “Things were insane, day in and day out: the people we knew, the excesses of all sorts. Golden Lions Roundabout – A Slice of Khmer Life The Golden Lions roundabout marks the beginning of Karaoke Street (AKA Street333), which has in excess of two dozen karaoke clubs sitting cheek to jowl in the space of 4 kilometers. In Cambodia Karaoke crosses social and economic bounds - it's as popular among the silver-spoon elite as it is with the no-spoon proletariat. Karaoke venues run the gamut from poshly designed and decorated nightspots that cater to business people and the upper classes, to hole-in-the-wall neighborhood hang-outs and scores of nameless mom-and-pop joints with the seemingly mandatory Anchor beer sign cantilevered over the front door that cater to grassroots clientele. Whatever the size, location or level of swankiness, one characteristic remains the same - the patrons crowd the venues because karaoke is king. When grabbing the microphone in a karaoke club, for a few charmed moments the patron becomes a superstar. Karaoke transforms mundane reality briefly into something joyous and ...

Yayoi Kusama New York Yayoi Chasm, is a Japanese artist and writer. Throughout her career she has worked in a wide variety of media, including painting, collage, sculpture, performance art and environmental installations, most of which exhibit her thematic interest in psychedelic colors, repetition and pattern. A precursor of the Pop Art, minimalist and feminist art movements, Kusama influenced contemporaries such as Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg. Although largely forgotten after departing the New York art scene in the early 1970s, Kusama is now acknowledged as one of the most important living artists to come out of Japan, and an important voice of the avant-garde. Born in Matsumoto, Nagano into an upper-middle-class family of seedling merchants, Kusama started creating art at an early age, going on to study Nihonga painting in Kyoto in 1948. Frustrated with this distinctly Japanese style, she became interested in the European and American avant-garde, staging several solo exhibitions of her paintings i ...

Steve Jobs shows the Macintosh to Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. “The launch of the Macintosh in January 1984 propelled Jobs into an even higher orbit of celebrity, as was evident during a trip to Manhattan he took at the time. He went to a party that Yoko Ono threw for her son, Sean Lennon, and gave the nine-year-old a Macintosh. The boy loved it. The artists Andy Warhol and Keith Haring were there, and they were so enthralled by what they could create with the machine that the contemporary art world almost took an ominous turn. “I drew a circle,” Warhol exclaimed proudly after using MacPaint.” Excerpt From: Walter Isaacson. “Steve Jobs.” iBooks.

Top art collections: NIARCHOS FAMILY. The heirs of shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos own a remarkable collection of Impressionist and Modern Art, specially his son Phillipe Niarchos. Among the works in the collection we could find three masterworks by Vincent van Gogh ("Self-portrait with a bandaged ear", "Portrait of Pere Tanguy" and "The house of Pére Pilon"), the arguably most important work by Paul Gauguin in private hands ("Riders on the beach") and the self-portrait "Yo, Picasso", bought in 1989 for almost $48 million, as well as the marvelous "Pietá" by El Greco. In recent years, Phillipe Niarchos has completed his collection with works by contemporary artists, like Andy Warhol's "Shot Red Marilyn" or a self-portrait by de Jean Michel Basquiat.

“Ideas win today in our society. [...] I ingest, then digest. Art is really just a mirror of ourselves.” Pop sculptor Jonathan Paul aka Desire Obtain Cherish (DOC) takes influence from Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol combining street, pop, conceptual and appropriation art in order to create sculptural pieces that explore contemporary society’s ever-growing obsessions: sex, gender, drugs, commerce, media and fame.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY: Susan Sontag: 1933-2004. Her literary career began in fiction, and she considered herself mainly a novelist even it was her essays which made her famous. When “Notes on ‘Camp’” was first published in the Partisan Review in 1964, it established her reputation as a critical thinker in popular culture. That essay has become the reference point for everything we thing about when we think of “camp”: the “so bad it’s good” quality; the celebration of the unnatural, the obvious artifice which fails to conceal deeper truths; the mocking of all that is serious; the playfulness that serves as an answer to moral indignation. Her series On Photography, which first appeared in the New York Review of Books between 1973 and 1977, drew on the works of Dian Arbus, Andy Warhol, and the Depression-era photography commissioned by the Farm Security Administration to illustrate the relationship of photography to the viewer and the photo’s subject. When she published Illness as Metaphor i ...

When Lou Reed and John Cale’s collaborative tribute to Andy Warhol, Songs for Drella, came out in 1990, I didn’t love it. I didn’t even like it. It felt really forced. Can not believe this happened 20 years ago today, sure doesn't seem that long ago but want to feel old? Figure skater Nancy Kerrigan got her knee whacked at the US championships, January 6, 1994, which started up the whole thing with Tonya Harding, her ex Jeff Gillooly (yeah, he had his 'Andy Warhol' moment from this) which culminated at the Lillehammer Olympics the following month. Seems unreal to be THAT long ago now.
Buddy Scott has an art revival project goinh and I was assigned Maxfield Parrish. MP was famous in the early twentieth century and painted "Daybreak", the most popular art print of the 20th century, based on number of prints made: one for every four American homes. According to the The National Museum of American Illustration, it has outsold Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans and Da Vinci's Last Supper. It is still in print. The Moody Blues album The Present uses a variation of the Parrish painting Daybreak for its cover. Parrish's art features dazzlingly luminous colors. He achieved the results by means of a technique called glazing where bright layers of oil color separated by varnish are applied alternately over a base rendering. He would build up the depth in his paintings by photographing, enlarging, projecting and tracing half- or full-size objects or figures. Parrish then cut out and placed the images on his canvas, covering them with thick, but clear, layers of glaze. The result is realism of e .. ...

Andy Warhol paints a soupcan and you build a museum for him. Andy Warhol is to Art what Ryan Leaf was to football. 5. Speaking of sports, whos your NBA team again? 6. The only Heisman Trophy winner from Penn State came from Philadelphia. 7. You love your past so much all your Lombardi Trophies but The Eagles are the only team to ever beat Lombardi in the playoffs. 8. A group of men met in Philsdelphia declared war against the government and won. A group of men met in Pittsburgh to fight the government on a Whiskey tax and got their *** kicked.

When Insults Had Class Technology, the internet, and all the great advancement of our present time are spectacular, to say the least. Everybody can broadcast to the world in a nanosecond. We can all have our famous "15 minutes", as Andy Warhol had predicted in 1968. The catch is that despite the amazing tools at our disposal, for the most part, instead of helping us, they are hurting us. We are relying on the tools so much, that we are slowly stopping to learn how to write, how to think creatively, and how to use the powerful tools to better ourselves, and for the betterment of humanity.  We even forgot how to kindly invite someone to go to *** in such a way that they actually look forward to the trip! :) Today, almost everywhere on the internet, the spelling is atrocious, and the way people insult each other is by calling everything *** or "cheesy" or a host of other very nasty words that I will not repeat. However, there was a time when even insults had class! These glorious insults are from an era ...

Two or three things from last week's introduction to Jean-Luc Godard's "2 Or 3 Things I Know About Her": In 1962, Andy Warhol brought his paintings and prints of brand-name grocery packaging into the institutions of high art, creating a media sensation and changing art history. And it posed an important question: What does the successful convergence of commercial products with high art say about the society that willingly enshrined them together? Soon after Warhol brought this question into art galleries, Godard brought it into the cinema, but with perhaps a more ambitious purpose. He wanted to analyze how our relationship to commercial products and material objects shapes our sense of who we are and what the world is actually like. Having studied anthropology at the Sorbonne before becoming a filmmaker, Godard made "2 Or 3 Things I Know About Her" (1967) to examine our relationship to objects and language in the same way that an anthropologist might study the religious relics of a remote tribe. This was ...

REMARKABLE ARTISTS – PAUL McCARTNEY – PART VIII Lifestyle Creative outlets While at school during the 1950s, McCartney thrived at art assignments, often earning top accolades for his visual work. However, his lack of discipline negatively affected his academic grades, preventing him from earning admission to art college. During the 1960s, he delved into the visual arts, explored experimental cinema, and regularly attended film, theatrical and classical music performances. His first contact with the London avant-garde scene was through artist John Dunbar, who introduced McCartney to art dealer Robert Fraser. At Fraser's flat he first learned about art appreciation and met Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Peter Blake, and Richard Hamilton. McCartney later purchased works by Magritte, using his painting of an apple for the Apple Records logo. McCartney became involved in the renovation and publicising of the Indica Gallery in Mason's Yard, London, which Barry Miles had co-founded and where Lennon first met ...

Roy Fox Lichtenstein (October 27, 1923 – September 29, 1997) was an American Pop Artist. During the 1960s, along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist among others, he became a leading figure in the new art movement. His work defined the basic premise of Pop Art through parody. Favoring the comic strip as his main inspiration, Lichtenstein produced hard-edged, precise compositions that documented while it parodied often in a tongue-in-cheek humorous manner. His work was heavily influenced by both popular advertising and the comic book style. He described Pop Art as "not 'American' painting but actually industrial painting". His paintings were exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City. Whaam! and Drowning Girl are generally regarded as Lichtenstein's most famous works.

CNN breaking news? “Actor Ryan O'Neal can keep an Andy Warhol portrait of Farrah Fawcett, a jury has ruled.
Ryan O'Neal shockingly just won a huge lawsuit over who owns an extremely expensive Andy Warhol painting of Farrah Fawcett. The University of Texas -- Farrah's alma mater -- sued Ryan, claiming the actress had gifted the painting to the school in her will. Ryan, who is in possession of the Warhol, claimed the artist himself gave him the painting to show his appreciation for setting up the portrait sitting with his ex. The value of the picture could be as high as $12 mil on the open market. It seemed the will was going to sink Ryan, but the jury sided with Ryan. Good thing. Last week he told TMZ ... if he didn't win he'd die.
For most of the last 33 years, an Andy Warhol portrait of Farrah Fawcett has hung in the home of her longtime lover, Ryan O'Neal, and a jury's verdict Thursday ensures that is where it will stay. For nearly a month, O'Neal has been in a courtroom as lawyers for the University of Texas at...
