I came home tonight from a screening of the new Yves Saint Laurent biopic to find that my friend Wilson Kidde had posted a couple of old photos of Henry Geldzahler and me from a brunch we were all having at the old Paris Commune in New York City circa 1981. I had just been reading this morning the section of my next book that is all about Henry. It is in the chapter called The Mentor. He is also woven into the chapter called The Factory Worker in which I write about my time working for Andy Warhol as Executive Editor of Interview magazine. Henry was the person who first introduced me to Andy as he did to so many people back when he cut me out of the herd and gathered me into his rarified fold of artists and doyennes and others who made up the cultural realm of the city. I was only 25 years old but Henry made sure I was literally given a place at the table in such a world. He'd take me to many events and parties and dinners with him and make a mischievous point of changing his place card with mine and ...

Isabelle Collin Dufresne, the French-born artist known as Ultra Violet, one of Andy Warhol's "Superstars", dies at 78
A fellow reviewer and friend of mine has a rule that applies to watching comedy. It is his tried and true, "10 Chuckle Ratio." If a comedy has at least ten, you can unequivocally say that it is, indeed, funny. That ratio was reached in just Act One/Scene One of the Crowded Kitchen Players' production of Alexander Ostrovsky's "ToClever By Half." Directed by Ara Barlieb, "Half" is the story of Yegor Gloumov, a poor man who uses deception and connivery to rise through the ranks of Russian high society. Barlieb's adaptation is an indictment of that society's membership, and the comedy that ensues from their ignorance flows from the page to the actors to the audience. Barlieb has concocted an experience which blurs the lines of the space-time continuum between 1860'sCzarist Russia and the swinging 60's of Andy Warhol and Austin Powers. Before the first word of dialogue is even spoken, the audience is already immersed in the era by the visage of Nora Oswald's sublime paintings. They evoke both the ...

With the help of Rip Torn, she enrolled in Lee Strasberg's Actors Studio and then the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York. Her first credited role was in the cult classic Prime Cut (1972), in which she played Poppy, a girl sold into se ...

So, here are a few things I learned while in New York, today: New Yorkers are *** However, if you can forgive them that long enough to force a conversation, they are not an unlikable peoples. There is a strictly enforced dress code in New York of ill fitting suits or 1970's jogging apparel. The buildings in New York were all designed by either Ivo Shandor as a way to channel supernatural energy to summon Zool or by Andy Warhol to spite Ivo Shandor. And, they are all impressively beautiful. There are no gas stations in New York. Cars, there, are fueled by rage and chaos. There are also no grocery stores in New York. But, that is okay because even the dirtiest, cheapest, hole-in-the-wall joints know how to do food right! No one in New York knows how to properly play the saxophone. In New York, having "Played Carnegie Hall" on your resume' affords you the opportunity to plink out show tunes to an unresponsive crowd at a mediocre steak house.
For all those people that are looking to take a selfie to the next level How to Take a Professional Selfie What do Rembrandt, President Obama, Andy Warhol and Madonna have in common? Of course, each of these people is—or was—world famous. But after fame and fortune, the similarities fade. The answer is that at some point in their lives, all these people made selfies. Whether they used oil on canvas, acrylic on silkscreen or a cell phone camera, each sidestepped the middleman by creating self-portraits. Impromptu snapshots of unique meetings or perfectly positioned pieces of art, the resulting images are fascinating. Why? Because selfies show people through their own eyes—not through those of a professional portrait artist or photographer. So what does this mean for today’s job seeker? It’s simple: adding a selfie to your professional profile can wrestle your profile pic out of the headlock of a stuffy, self-conscious studio shot and into the unlimited possibilities of your own personal art direc ...

LOVE at first sight It is the Pop Artist's most famous painting but Robert Indiana's LOVE began as a 1965 Christmas card design for New York's Museum of Modern Art. (Morgan Art Foundation) Robert Indiana’s LOVE painting may be the 20th century’s most recognisable work of art, but it earned the artist neither respect nor profit. At last, a new retrospective places him at the center of American Pop Art. What is the single most famous artwork of the 20th century? Your first inclination, answering that faintly silly question, might be to think of the most famous artists of the 20th century and go from there. But while Pablo Picasso or Jackson *** or Andy Warhol may have instantly recognizable styles, no single painting of theirs has been as endlessly reproduced, as widely circulated, as frequently spoofed, and as rapaciously merchandised as a work of art by someone whose name you might not even know. Robert Indiana, now 85 years old, may not command the same recognition as his Pop Art confreres, but L ...

Frequently associating with *** and Bianca Jagger and Andy Warhol, at Studio 54, she became well known for her dramatic style. She first appeared on the International Best Dressed List in 1972, then was elected to its Hall of Fame in 1980. That year, her friend Diana Vreeland, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue suggested that Carolina design a clothing line. She did so, having samples made in Caracas, and showed them in a friend's apartment in New York. Experimental Cinema: "FERRERI" directed by Mario Schifano. Featuring Marco Ferreri. Mario Schifano ( 20 September 1934, Khoms, Libya - 26 January 1998, Rome, Italy ) was an Italian painter and collagist of the Postmodern tradition. He also achieved some renown as a film-maker and rock musician. Schifano is considered to be one of most significant and pre-eminent artists of Italian postmodernism. His work was exhibited in the famous 1962 "New Realists" show at the Sidney Janis Gallery with other young Pop Art and Nouveau réalisme luminaries, including Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. He became part of the core group of artists comprising the "Scuola romana" alongside Franco Angeli and Tano Festa. Reputed as a prolific and exuberant artist, he nonetheless struggled with a lifelong drug habit that earned him the label maledetto, or "cursed".

Impressed by the extremes in harmony. East and west (Ukiyo-e + Andy Warhol, Renoir, Rodin on display). Hot and cold (ramen + ubiquitous ice cream sold in stalls and vendos). Natural and man-made beauty (landscaped gardens + buildings). Old and new school (squat toilets to ultra-modern toilets with seat warmers, built-in bidets and flushing sound). Super cute to effortlessly stylish. Traditional to crazy (kimonos + anime-looking clothes).

Brand new Andy Warhol work discovered on (believe it or not) floppy disks:
Back in 1985, Andy Warhol participated in a live event meant to display the multimedia capabilities of the Amiga 1000, a newly released computer from the long defunct PC company Commodore International. Some of the pieces Warhol created with the Amiga 1000 included his famous Campbell’s soup can,...
We talk about ensuring that you have backups of your files quite a bit, but one topic that isn't discussed very often is how to ensure that you will have the proper tools to load your backups in the future. While we assume that standards like .JPG and .DOCX will last forever, there's plenty of lesser-known file formats and video codecs that future computers may not be able to read. A group of people in the Carnegie Mellon University Computer Club discovered this first hand. After discovering through a YouTube video that Commodore partnered with artist Andy Warhol in the 80s, the group decided to reach out to the Andy Warhol Museum and other artistic folks to search through old files and see if there were any unique hidden gems. After years of work, they found a staggering 28 images that the world had never seen before. However, it wasn't as easy as plugging in a floppy disk and loading the files into Photoshop. The disks, circa 1985, were frail and the data on them was in a format that nobody could read. ...

I think having land and not ruining it is the most beautiful art that anybody could ever want to own.-Andy Warhol
Are Damien Hirst’s dot paintings (not done by his own hands) art or very expensive wallpaper? I often think the art world mirrors the pop music world, where the mediocre sits alongside true talent, put on a pedestal by the money sharks behind both worlds (no pun intended) knowing very well that the majority will buy into it (pun intended) I don’t think artists like Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin etc should be confused with amazingly, genuinely talented artists like Grayson Perry, David Hockney etc. I think the film ‘Exit through the gift shop’ is some kind of statement by Banksy, its almost like a modern remake of the ‘The Rebel’ starring Tony Hancock 1961, for those who have not seen it I am not referring to Banksy as the successful chancer, I would put Banksy in the genuinely talented category, he has a lot of mimics but he was the real deal. Those who have seen it will know who I am referring to. Andy Warhol once said “art is anything you can get away with” He should know. For the record, an ...
Second poem after another round of revision. This is for my final project this semester, so any feedback is welcomed! Ode to Warhol’s Superstar, Candy Darling The salute of a breast, the bow of a wrist, erection of waist, and looseness of hips Her fire engine lips slit open to show her tongue, just the tip and some teeth below Her slender waist waves like grass in the sea, a rhythm I crave but it will never be for her erectness’ much more than effective tight-lacing still, (not lust-less) I adore the (un)bosomed deity I’m facing. *Candy Darling was made a star by Andy Warhol. What made her different from his other muses was the fact that she successfully presented herself as a woman though she was, in fact, male.

I wrote several books on Shirley Temple you are allowed to write and make reference to "Famous People" as long as you do it tastefully and without financial gain but in the art world you are allowed to create in the likeness of famous people- Andy Warhol painted and depicted thousands of celebrities so does Annie Leibowitz you just have to have disclaimers saying it is not an official Nicolas Cage event

Andy Warhol would be pleased for me - were he still alive to bask in the pleasantness of course. I've managed to beat his immortal 15 minutes of fame; how's that immortality working for you Andy? Yes folks, I made it onto RocKwiz Tueday night. Don't exactly know when it's going to be on but was advised that it'd probably be in 3-4 weeks (so that may mean 3-10 or more weeks in TV time-frame speak.) Special thanks to Jeanette (girlfriend, agent and especially fashion stylist.) Watch out for the quite fabulous paisley shirt (methinks it's actually the real star of the appearance) with me playing second banana inside of it. I even got to answer a few questions on behalf of the shirt... Sorry to Leyna Buller, Sarah Buller & Lachlan for not pulling it out of the bag the first time around a few weeks ago. This appearance is dedicated to you. After this height of fame I'm ready to start my band. 'From Here To Nadir' - sure to release a killer one hit wonder song...& there's no shame in that!
MORE ART FOR ART'S SAKE By Eddy Hawks Los Angeles, CA., April 9, 2014 -- When an artist becomes engrossed in the act of creating art, they can get into a rhythm whereby productivity goes up and many creations are born. There are many artists who have been prolific such as Marc Chagall, Gustav Klimt, Pablo Picasso, Jackson *** Henri Matisse, Rainer Maria Rilke, Auguste Rodin, William Shakespeare and Andy Warhol. There are many reasons for this. The artist will sell more art, gain popularity and become happier, for when an artist creates a new piece, they feel happy. It is as simple as that. Through the process of making something, the artist becomes filled with a sense of accomplishment, growth and development. Yesterday, Kat Hawks of American Ballet of Los Angeles and ABLA International created two new paintings called "Red River" and "Buddha's Forest" and I painted two called "Blue Prophecy" and "Fleur de Bien". According to Kat Hawks, "artists have a calling and yearning to create work which will m ...

Sadly, we have three entertainment deaths to report about tonight: Mickey Rooney, John Pinette and Leee Black Childers. He worked in the entertainment business for almost his whole life and was known by many generations for his countless movie and television appearances. Mr. Rooney, born Joseph Yule Jr. in Brooklyn New York, was married eight times and had nine children. His most famous ex-wife was the lovely Ava Gardner. Leee Black Childers was a punk icon. Throughout the 1960's & 1970's he was known for his association with Andy Warhol, Glam rock, Punk rock, and his photography. He also managed Johnny Thunders and the heartbreakers. Mr. Childers is most well known for his work behind the camera, and his images of David Bowie, Lou Reed, Debbie Harry, Sex Pistols and many others. John Pinette, 50, was a very funny Comedian and Actor. He was known for his TV, movie and stand-up comedy ...

A certain TV show had some reveals and curveballs that screwed with people's emotions and left everyone with bittersweet feels? Apparently some have had some choice things to say about that. I will not miss Fred Phelps. But frankly I don't wish anyone to suffer eternally. I believe more in "Do unto others..." So to treat him as I would be wish to be treated myself, I wish him... A really nice long concert... Freddy Mercury would be perfect as the front man. Hanging out with some famous poets, artists, and thinkers would be awesome... a century or two at table with Kevyn AuCoin, Andy Warhol, Virginia Woolf, Walt Whitman, Alexander McQueen, Leonardo DaVinci, Josephine Baker, Michaelangelo, Oscar Wilde, Frida Kahlo... you get the idea. And a few other luminaries might make it interesting... maybe when I'm done with artists and philosophers...I would want to hash it out with the heavyweights. I think I would wish the same thing for Fred. Maybe a millennium long talk with Jesus of Nazareth, but since I (and Fred) know a fair amount about him...he can sit at the other end of the table...I want the ones closer to be Siddartha, Mohammed, Lao Tzu, and Confuscious. And face it... I am who I am. I am a ...

Yellowjeff – Solo exhibition yellowjeff was born in Taiwan in 1984, Yellow is his family name in Chinese. yellowjeff’s foray into art came to a dramatic halt when he was a child after his school teacher found a portrait he had drawn of him and slapped him hard across the face. It wasn’t until he attended university that he undertook life drawing lessons, as he studied communication design in Shih Chien University in Taiwan. He found drawing the face to be the most interesting aspect of drawing, due to the way it deals with expression. One day after class he was asked by a classmate to draw his portrait, then more and more people around him started requesting them. This began his devotion to portraiture. yellowjeff’s work has been influenced by Egon Schiele, Andy Warhol and Expressionism. He mixes traditional drawing materials that create a symbiotic result in application. Oil paint mixed with crayon and watercolours are applied together through different techniques, that mesh and drip whilst takin ...
ALWAYS SAY LESS THAN NECESSARY Transgression of the Law. Coriolanus was a great military hero of ancient Rome. People held him in awe, until he opened his mouth. He spoke his mind, hardly able to control his arrogance and boastfulness. He slandered and insulted people. The more speeches he made, the less people respected him. He suffered the people’s wrath and was eventually banished from the city. • Observance of the Law Masters of enigma Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp knew the power of saying less and keeping people guessing. The less Duchamp talked about his work, the more it was talked about in the art circles. Andy Warhol recognized it was hard to talk people into doing what you wanted, so when interviewed, he would give vague and ambiguous answers and let the interviewer find his own interpretation. Wisdom in a nutshell: • Saying less will keep you from saying something foolish or even dangerous. • Once the words are out you cannot take them back. • Keeping silent makes people reveal mor . ...
What would happen if the worlds most famous artists where to design a house in their signature style: Italian architect and illustrator Federico Babina reinterpreted iconic works from artists including Piet Mondrian, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Marcel Duchamp and many more, as cross-sectional drawings of buildings. "Archist" is a collection of 27 images, playfully interpreting the styles and themes of some of the world's greatest artists including Picasso, Salvador Dali and Joan Miro, and imagines them as architectural forms. Babina explores the symbiotic relationship between architecture and art, and how they would interact with each other. "Art and architecture are disciplines that speak and lightly touch each other,” explained Babina. "The definition and function of architecture is changing constantly with the development of contemporary art." The artist tried to imagine what a house designed by Dali or a museum designed by Miro might look like. "A sculpture is like a micro-architecture, a facade can ...

Three things: 1.am I the only person who will spend nearly the whole night picking up Legos and broken electronics after a two week period of neglect and have it look worse than when I began? 2. Why would auto zone hire people who not only know less than me about my car but know less about engines and parts and components in general. Can't they at least feign a thoughtful look instead of shaking their heads like I accidentally walked into a McDonald's or a Gap store and what would they know of such matters. 3. Skinny jeans/pants. Do we think they're going the way of legwarmers and shoulder pads soon or what. Because I'm about tired of dealing with getting them situated just to look like an Andy Warhol fanatic who missed the memo that he's not all that cutting edge anymore. Or maybe Michael stipe devotee. saw its share of strife and turmoil. The current events of the time included an Amtrak train crash, the Iran-Contra affair, the Unabomber bombing Salt Lake City and the Black Monday stock market crash on October 19th. Add in a typhoon in the Philippines and two different plane crashes and it’s no wonder that this was also the year that Prozac hit the market for the first time. It wasn’t all doom and gloom, though. Aretha Franklin finally got the respect she deserved by being the first woman to be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. The Bangles had us all Walking like an Egyptian while Bon Jovi has us Living on a Prayer. We got introduced to Johnny Depp as 21 Jump Street hit the small screen and Patrick Dempsey as he tried to buy love on the big screen. Day in Music History for March 12: On this day - - in 1967, The Velvet Underground release their debut album The Velvet Underground and Nico (also called the Andy Warhol album or the Banana album). The band spent 4 days in a run down studio in NYC and then sent the results to various record labels. Almost all declined, but they were finally able to get signed to jazz label Verve Records. When it was finally released, the album was a total failure. Radio stations wouldn't play it because they thought the lyrics about sadomasochism, drug addiction, and sex work were too obscene. Verve barely promoted the album at all. Most of the major rock journals didn't even notice the album. It actually didn't start to be noticed until almost a decade later because of later Velvet Underground releases (at which point, everyone said they'd always loved it and praised its influence on rock). However, the early failure led the band to fire Andy Warhol as their manager and boot Nico out of the band. - in 1971, the Allman Br ...

Hunting for the next Andy Warhol could mean not only finding works for $1,000 or less but also earning a fortune from your investment twenty years down the track. If an emerging artist develops a successful career then their works skyrocket in value. Jeff Koons’ statue Balloon Dog (Orange) broke world records last year at a Christie’s auction when it sold for $58.4m. But when he was starting out as an artist, his work sold for a fraction: as little as $3,000 in 1985.

In the late 60's, Andy Warhol produced a cruel send-up of Hedy Lamarr that now seems quite uncalled for.
Taken from "What Do You Know" by Jaime O'Neill.the following blew me away. From college students from the 1980's a compilation of what students "knew" about their heritage & their planet: "A long time ago, in the 17th century, Christ was born. At that time, Dwight Eisenhower was president of the US, but he often took vacations at Camp David in Israel near Christ's birthplace. In fact, a lot of stuff was happening around this time. For instance, Charles Darwin invented gravity, which made a lot of people more down-to-earth. This invention was quite popular, as revealed by the Gallup "poles." Meanwhile, in Rio de Janeiro in France, Napoleon, a Russian, was planning to invade Leningrad, Germany. About this same time, Andy Warhol was writing his masterpiece, "War and Peace", from his home in Stratford-upon-Avon, Germany." Is goes on.this was really written by students. This book is so much fun. I am enjoying it. Will def pass this one on to someone else to enjoy!

Ingmar Bergman called Portrait of Jason “the most extraordinary film I’ve seen in my life.” When it first screened in a sneak preview, the audience included Tennessee Williams, Robert Frank, Andy Warhol, Arthur Miller, Elia Kazan, Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, and many others. But for decades, Clarke’s powerful a ...
Tears. I went there regularly in 1965-66, they had the best coffee coming out of the coolest chrome art nouveau spouts! Prior for me in NJ, it was all Maxwell House in proctor/gamble percolators (still nostalgic for me). When they closed, along with Schraffts (sp?), it really signaled the end of an era of a casual but elegant afternoon leisure affordable by many...to add to the irreplaceable loss, this was the 3 year period when the old Metropolitan Opera was closed and razed, replaced by the imposing and perfect but soulless Lincoln Center compound. There was even an effort to close Carnegie Hall. Then Andy Warhol took center stage, Bauhaus resurged, plastic reigned, and economics, efficiency and speed became the measure of culture. (remember Andy's '15 minutes of fame' observation?) Thankfully, the Beatles, Stones, and counterculture in general rose from the ashes as partial compensation. And now, it's a consumer town cultivated by the super wealthy for the up and mobile preps, yups and glitz. (no ...

A rare exhibition of Andy Warhol’s photographic portraits will be held at the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center. Sessions with Andy: Warhol Photography from the University of South Carolina Upstate opens in the Kimbrough Gallery on March 6th. Andy Warhol is best known for his Pop Art paintings of Campbell’s Soup cans and Marilyn Monroe. While the iconic celebrity paintings began with appropriated media photographs that were silk-screened onto a canvas, the commissioned works began with a Polaroid photo-session with Warhol. The museum exhibition contains some of these serial photographs and presents the viewer several photographs exhibiting only minor changes from one image to the next. They are hung in the gallery to imitate the repetition often seen in Warhol’s celebrity portraits. In an attempt to make his work mechanical, Warhol had turned to the Polaroid camera and tape recorder to more objectively document American life as he saw it. The images in this exhibition are documents of his m ...
“What a life! From the Senate elevator to Studio 54 to Andy Warhol and Tennessee Williams, Gore Vidal and John Lennon to the famous demonstration inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral — who is this guy, Forest Gump? This is the compelling life and near-death story of Sean Strub, of thousands lost to HIV-AIDS, and thousands more living with it whom his activism helped save. Wow.” — Andrew Tobias
