Tis true, after a long sabbatical I shall be returning to the main stage at the B&N Kids Dept. to regale the children with a tale or two - mayhaps a song. In my mind I'm kind of like a mixture of Andy Kaufman, Pee Wee Herman, and Captain Kangaroo. Don't know if that comes across or not. Kids seem to enjoy it. It's like Kidapalooza, at times.

HEART BEEPS: this movie is proof positive that what you like as a kid could be absolute dreck. There is some major talent here, but savagely thrown through the machinations of a cartoonish, not even remotely funny, script. My first Red Flag was the credits where John Williams went the synthesizer route to the detriment of the entire galaxy. There were a few moments when he added E.T. like strings, but it was an annoying and forgettable tune. Then you hear Andy Kaufman's voice as a robot: instantly nails scratching on a blackboard are summoned to play havoc with your sympathy. How are we supposed to care about this robot if his very voice sounds like a bad Latka (from TAXI) imitation. Bernadette Peters does not fair much better, glammed up like a hooker in a Ziggy Stardust Traveling Road Show. Add to this, a horrific "Catskills" robot that tells terrible jokes with a built in drum roll snare for punctuation, a cute "baby" robot that Kaufman and Peter's characters build, (you see, they have fallen in love) ...
