Extent UPSC decision to JEE as well, says Anand Kumar: Voicing the opinion fostered by many IIT aspirants, mathematician Anand Kumar of Super 30 fame has urged for an increase in the number of attempts allowed to crack the JEE. His suggestion comes in the wake of the recent decision on UPSC exams. "This should also be extended to Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)," he said in a statement. Kumar has been demanding more chances in JEE for students from underprivileged sections in the rural areas, saying they don't get the advantage of quality schooling and often start their preparations late. "More opportunities will help reduce the urban-rural divide so that bright students from rural areas come forward," he said. "It will be injustice to IIT aspirants with just two chances," said the mathematician, who has earned laurels across the world for helping students from poor families to crack IIT examination by providing free coaching and lodging. He is best known for his Super 30 programme, which he started in Patna, Bihar in 2002, and which coaches economically backward students for IIT-JEE, the entrance examination for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). By 2011, 236 of the 270 had made it to IITs and Discovery Channel showcased his work in a documentary. Every year in August, since 2003, his coaching institute, Ramanujan School of Mathematics(RSM), now a trust, holds a competitive test to select 30 students for the ‘Super 30’ scheme. About 4,000 to 5,000 students appear at the test, and eventually he takes thirty intelligent students from economically backward sections, tutors them, and provides study materials and lodging for a year. Bihar's Super 30 shines again in IIT-JEE results Patna, May 18, 2012: In another big score, 27 of the 30 students from Bihar's Super 30, a free coaching centre for underprivileged students, have cracked the highly competitive Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) this year, its director said Friday. "It is again good news that this year, 27 out of the 30 students made it to the IIT-JEE... it has underlined how with proper opportunity, students from poor families can also reach the prestigious IIT," Super 30's founder-director Anand Kumar told IANS. The successful candidates include the wards of a truck mechanic, a farmer, a daily-wage labourer and vendors. "All of them have managed to successfully chase their IIT-JEE dreams at Super 30 with their commitment and hard work," he said. Last year, 24 students of the institute had cleared the IIT-JEE.
