Went to a Used and Rare bookstore today also... bought In Cold Blood (for some reason always wanted to read that), To Kill a Mockingbird (not like I haven't read that for a million times but it is one of my favs), Elie Wiesel's Memoirs: All Rivers Run to the Sea, and Amy Tan's Opposite of Fate (already read from library and enjoyed it so much I bought it)... Now I will reread TKAM (again) and read ICB and see who is better at writing... though I strongly suspect Harper Lee was the better writer! What do my fellow English teachers think? Bob Myer, Joan Moseley Nelson, Janice Martin, Jennifer Hudson Martin, Kay Shurtleff, Jo Ann Crooks Hall, and anyone else I may have forgotten...
Dearest daffter of mine, If I only have one wish to ask for on your birthday is to keep you as long as a father can…but, we both know that growing up and moving out is just another part of our lives. So I grew up and moved out. I just can’t figure out why you’re still hanging around your aging parents? Sweetheart, having you and knowing you is a lot to ask from a father & daughter relationship. I’m glad that you are such a “dutiful” daughter that you are willing to shed blood for me. Oh, wait! That is a memorable quote from “The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan. Kidding aside, I am just thankful that you keep sharing your time and talent not only to your proud parents but to those who have met you and adore you. God made everyone and everything perfect. He knows that our bodies, our minds, our talents/skills (nunchuck skills, computer skills, etc.), our idiosyncrasies, our faults, our pains, our manner or way of thinking and speaking are just part of His “funny” grand scheme of things. That ...
Dear Readers, Bryce wrote for you, his readers, and used to often say, 'the reader is always right'. I am so happy to let you know that Bryce was awarded, 'The Lloyd O'Neil Award’ for Service to the Australian Book Industry' at the Australian Publishing Awards dinner in Sydney last Friday night. It is very rare for this prestigious award to be received post-humously, and I was greatly honoured to accept it in Bryce's memory. In my short speech I told the audience of publishing luminaries including authors' Tom Keneally, Matthew Reilly, and Amy Tan, (among others) how Bryce would have been so thrilled to have won this award. When something wonderful happened Bryce would say, "Goodgoddles Caboddles!'" I wanted those present to hear Bryce's own voice, so I read aloud some vintage Bryce Courtenay words, from his short story, "When the giraffe came to drink from the silver bowl of the moon". (The tears welled up as I read aloud his words) Bryce always felt he was part of a team, and I took the opportunity .. ...

The forbidden things were a great influence on my life. I was forbidden to read Catcher in the Rye-Amy Tan (Born 1952) Chinese-American novelist. Finally, we shall place the Sun himself at the center of the universe-Nicolaus Copernicus-(1473-1543) Polish scientist. This Day In History :: February 19, 1952 Happy Birthday, Amy Tan! Tan, author of the best-selling novel The Joy Luck Club, was born on February 19, 1952, to Chinese immigrants who moved to California in 1949. She studied English at San Jose State and Berkeley and went on to work in technical and business writing, as well as publishing. When Tan was 26, she learned that her mother had three daughters from a previous marriage that she was forced to leave behind in Shanghai. She went to China to meet her half-sisters and the experience inspired her first novel, The Joy Luck Club (1989). Tan has gone on to write several other novels. Stop by your campus’ library to get one: the video above, Amy Tan speaks at the White House as part of a Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Community Heritage Month celebration.)

Literally and 'literarilly' suffocating answer to Cris Evert B. Lato's first survey question, Who do you read? Anne Tyler is my favorite author and I possess one or two copies of her novels. I also love Jeffrey Eugenides (I am currently reading The Marriage Plot), Amy Tan (her newest, The Valley of Amazement, was the latest book I’ve read), Jhumpa Lahiri (I don’t think I am willing to wait for a used copy to turn up at Booksale, definitely buying this the next time that I get disappointed with life), Ian McEwan (I am still on a quest to complete my McEwan library, 4 novels and stories collection more) Michael Cunningham (the film adaptation of The Hours is my favorite), Carol Shields (The Stone Diaries is a must re-read this 2014), Nick Hornby and Jessica Zafra (they are actually siblings), Neil Gaiman and Salman Rushdie (I’ve tackled their books for young adults, the books for older audience are next), J.D. Salinger, and the great Stephen King. This 2014, I plan re-read the one-hit wonders (Margare ...

New books on CD for this month include titles by Fannie Flagg, Solomon Northup, and Amy Tan!
Editorial Reviews Review An Amazon Best Book of the Month, November 2013: For a hefty half of her gorgeous new novel, The Valley of Amazement, Amy Tan instructs us in the finer points of life as a courtesan in early 20th century China: expect and revel in sensual descriptions of the clothes, the customs, even the not-so-niceties of catering to rich men in a very regimented society. Lulu Minturn is a white Californian who’d run away with a Chinese painter, established the best courtesan house in Shanghai and given birth to a beautiful “Eurasian” (in the parlance of the time) daughter, Violet. Soon, either because she was tricked or deceitful, Lulu abandons Violet and flees back to America; history soon is in danger of repeating itself when Violet gives birth to her own daughter. (Eventually, the scene shifts to California, where the family searches for redemption and reconciliation.) Nobody does mother-daughter angst and cross cultural conflict better than Tan, who has been literally writ ...

Harriet McDonald tagged me with the number 6 -- so, OK, here goes: 1. I've lived exactly half my life in Wyoming -- 28 years -- and half in the South, another 28 years. But I'll always be a Wyoming girl at heart, as the sight of cotton in a field takes my breath away. 2. I was widowed when I was a young mother, just 25. I was pregnant with baby Shelby, and Lisa was just 3. 3. I'm writing a memoir re the above and have plans for a couple of novels. 4. One of my hobbies as a bibliophile is meeting authors and having them sign books. I have in my collection Jimmy Carter, Jane Fonda, Stephen King, John Grisham, Michael Connelly, Margaret Atwood, Amy Tan, Ian McEwan, Alexander McCall Smith, Ann Patchett, etc. Two bookcases full of signed books and expanding...why we build a library! 5. I was a First Class Girl Scout and a Job's Daughters Queen (it's a Masonic thing -- few in the South know about it). 6. They kicked me out of Wyoming for three strikes: I'm a Democrat; I'm allergic to horses; and I do ...

Earlier this week, I visited two well-known writers in my modest suburban neighborhood that borders Chicago’s West Side called Oak Park. Most know it as virtual museum for Ernest Hemingway, Frank Lloyd Wright and Dr. Percy Julian. It was at Wright’s beautifully-designed, recently-restored Unity Temple where Monday night rumpled-suited, mystery writer Alexander McCall Smith shook my hand and that of a disabled senior next to me, and where Tuesday night novelist Amy Tan smiled at me acknowledging to the audience that a reporter was scribbling notes. Both writers took pot shots at critics, many of whom never read the books they’re critiquing. To be honest, I have not yet read Smith’s acclaimed No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series that’s been translated into 45 languages, sold more than 20 million copies, and adapted into an HBO series; nor have I read Amy Tan’s The Valley of Amazement that will most likely achieve or surpass the fame and fortune earned by previous novels and films like The Joy Luc ...

Amy Tan: We went with friends tonight (coincidentally, "Ding Dong DOMA is dead" Day) to see "Hick," a one-woman play at The Garage in San Francisco. It's based on the true love relationship between Eleanor Roosevelt and journalist Lorena Hickok, also called "Hick" by Eleanor Roosevelt. Central to the play is Hickok's question whether to preserve Eleanor Roosevelt's letters, which contain important matters of her work and life with FDR, or to destroy them to protect their privacy as lovers. Fascinating: All of the letters read aloud are Eleanor Roosevelt's actual words, and the Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park has about 3000 of them. Terry Baum wrote and warmly performed the poignant role of Hickok, who subverted her career to be with her lover. The is a small, very intimate theater, a former garage. If it's a warm night, bring a fan.

In the literary world, they're rock stars, having sold a combined 350 million books. I have no idea where my lifelong fascination with the Far East, especially China and Japan and their strange intertwined histories originated. My father said it was because my mother craved Chinese food so much when she was carrying me -- actually he said that when she nursed me there was duck sauce in one breast and mustard in the other -- but somehow I doubt that is the cause. In any case, as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by older writers such as Lin Yutang, and Pearl S Buck, an American who wrote about China, and then, in my 30's and since, I have wept reading Amy Tan, laughed reading Gish Jen, thrilled to the adventures described by Maxine Hong Kingston in "The Woman Warrior" and marvelled at the long and sometimes tragic memoir by Jung Chang, "The Wild Swan." Somewhere along the line I missed Anchee Min, to my regret, though I shall make up for it. I picked up a pristine copy of her novel about Empress Cixi, "The Last Empress" at Rodney's -- I bought it partly because of my fascinat . ...
