"City finds new space for stalled Harlem Success Academy co-location" (Columbia Spectator - April 27, 2014) Education: Harlem Success, P.S. 149, P.S. 811 EXCERPT: The mayor’s office announced on Saturday that the fifth through eighth grades of Success Academy Harlem 4 will move to the Annunciation School on Amsterdam Avenue and 131st Street, ending months of confusion and conflict over the future of the previously canceled charter school co-location. Harlem 4, which currently is located in a school building on 113th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, was approved last year to move its middle grades into another school building on 117th Street and Lenox Avenue that is already home to two public and two charter schools. Newly elected Mayor Bill de Blasio canceled the plan in February as part of a comprehensive review of school co-locations approved under the Bloomberg administration. “It doesn’t matter whether a child attends a district school, a charter school, or a parochial school—these are ...

A image potpourri - 1) my father at about 5 in 1918 (I'm guessing) in NYC with a horse -- during a reasonably flush period for the Kettelhacks: I believe they lived way uptown on Amsterdam Avenue when this was taken; Herman, my grandfather, was a successful businessman (import/export), though I don't know what the war's effects were on that (their Germanness couldn't have made them popular), but my father's earliest memories recall a pretty well-heeled life: he had a nanny; he remembered being in a high chair at Luchow's (oh ye who knew not Luchow's! - Hello Dolly era belle epoque German palace of a restaurant that presided over east 14th street until the early '80s, briefly after which it turned into a *** bar, then was razed -- one of NYC's great institutions; I had dinner there during its last still florid days, played violin in it when the violinist in the band said sure-why-not -- ach du liebe!). Anyway, the Kettelhacks were clearly doing very well for a while -- their upbringing in Bremen had been s ...

The Upper West Side of Manhattan, just above Columbus Circle, was until quite recently a relatively poor neighborhood, and some of the veteran firemen at Engine 40 , Ladder 35, located at Sixty-sixth Street and Amsterdam Avenue, like to recall how Amsterdam was once the dividing line between an Irish neighborhood to the east and a black neighborhood, just to the west. The black neighborhood used to be known as San Juan Hill, some say in honor of the black soldiers who moved there after the Spanish-American War, or perhaps because of the frequent, bloody street fights that occurred between the Irish and black kids early in the century, or finally because some of the city’s earliest Puerto Rican settlers lived there. But after World War II, as the city became ever more affluent, as every piece of real estate in Manhattan became more and more valuable, the neighborhood began to change. The tenements that had housed the poor, where bookies haunted the hallways and homing pigeons were sometimes still kept on ...

B.O.O.T. Chapter One, third segment, Tony Boots Nineteen ten was an interesting year. In February Boutrous Ghali, the first native-born Prime Minister of Egypt was assassinated. March saw an uprising against Ottoman rule break out in Albania. Halley's Comet was visible in the April night's sky. Edward VII of the United Kingdom died and his son, George V, began the process of ascending to the throne. The earth passed through the tail of Comet Halley and the Union of South Africa was created. As eventful as May had been, June was the antithesis. On Independence Day, the great African American boxer and sportsman, Jack Johnson defeated James J. Jeffries in a heavyweight match sparking race riots across the United States. Anthony Leopold Trapani, Junior, was born August twelfth. The apartment at 2143 Amsterdam Avenue had two bedrooms and Anthony Jr. slept first in a crib by his parents' bed and later in a folding bed in the dining room when his younger sister forced him out of the crib and off the teat as wel ...
.“The Day I Fell In Love with Hip Hop” By Derrick Dolphin It was the summer of ’79, I was a youngin, and spent a lot of time at my Grandma’s building. Located on the border of Harlem and Washington Heights, 1909 Amsterdam Avenue, a.k.a. “T...he 9,” is a 20 story red brick behemoth that is actually a stand-alone project of the New York City Housing Authority. Behind The 9 there is a back yard where we played Stick Ball, Skellies, Ringo Livio, and Hot Peas and Butter. We played all day, into the evening, until the lights came on and we were summoned upstairs. One afternoon, while playing a game of Skellies, I noticed several of the older guys from the building lugging a bunch of equipment out of the back door. About six of them carefully toted a couple of turn tables, some speakers, several crates of vinyl records, and a couple of other items that my pre-teen eyes had never seen before. As they started to set up the equipment, I turned away from the Skellies board and became fixated on their act ...

Sugar Hill Sugar Hill is a historic district in the northern part of of the Hamilton Heights section of Harlem in the New York City borough of Manhattan.[2] Defined by 155th Street to the north, 145th Street to the south, Edgecombe Avenue to the east, and Amsterdam Avenue to the west,[3] it gained its name in the 1920s when the locale became a popular place for wealthy African Americans to live during Harlem Renaissance. Reflective of the "sweet life" there, Sugar Hill featured rowhouses for such prominent African Americans as W. E. B. Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and Duke Ellington. Langston Hughes wrote about its relative affluence in his essay "Down and Under in Harlem" published in The New Republic in 1944:[4] "If you are white and are reading this vignette, don't take it for granted that all Harlem is a slum. It isn't. There are big apartment houses up on the hill, Sugar Hill, and up by City College -- nice high-rent-houses with elevators and doormen, where Canada Lee lives, a ...
The Laughing Man IN 1928, when I was nine, I belonged, with maximum esprit de corps, to an organization known as the Comanche Club. Every schoolday afternoon at three o'clock, twenty-five of us Comanches were picked up by our Chief outside the boys' exit of P. S. 165, on 109th Street near Amsterdam Avenue. We then pushed and punched our way into the Chief's reconverted commercial bus, and he drove us (according to his financial arrangement with our parents) over to Central Park. The rest of the afternoon, weather permitting, we played football or soccer or baseball, depending (very loosely) on the season. Rainy afternoons, the Chief invariably took us either to the Museum of Natural History or to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Saturdays and most national holidays, the Chief picked us up early in the morning at our various apartment houses and, in his condemned-looking bus, drove us out of Manhattan into the comparatively wide open spaces of Van Cortlandt Park or the Palisades. If we had straight athletic ...

The New York Times reports that a couple of thugs got what they deserved when they tried to rob a 72-year old storeowner in Harlem. The only injustice is that city bureaucrats are considering a possible weapons charge against the man who defended his life and property: They strode into the restaurant supply store in Harlem shortly after 3 p.m. on Thursday, four young men intent on robbery, one with a Glock 9-millimeter pistol, the police said. The place may have looked like an easy mark, a high-cash business with an owner in his 70s, known as a gentle, soft-spoken man. But Charles Augusto Jr., the 72-year-old proprietor of the Kaplan Brothers Blue Flame Corporation, at 523 West 125th Street, near Amsterdam Avenue, had been robbed several times before, despite the fact that his shop is around the corner from the 26th Precinct station house on West 126th Street. There were no customers in the store, only Mr. Augusto and two employees, a man and a woman. The police said the invaders announced a holdup, appro ...

Quoted from "Columbia Daily Spectator, Volume CVIII, Number 105, 21 April 1964" Aid to College of Pharmacy Dependent on Construction By Philip Brenner and David Spiegel The Columbia College of Pharmacy is in danger of losing a $250,000 grant from the government unless groundbreaking is begun on its new building by Jan. 1, 1965. The building will be located on a plot bounded by Amsterdam Avenue, West 121 st St, and Morningside Drive. Under the terms of the Health Education Facilities Act, a deadline is set by which time the new construction must be started. The money the Pharmacy School would lose unless it begins construction by Jan. 1 constitutes one-half of the total funds they have allotted for research facilities. Plans for construction have been halted by the Morningside 121 st Street Tenants' Committee, the tenant group opposed to the choice of site for the new building. They have an appeal pending before the City Rent and Rehabilitation Administration. However, a similar appeal was previously rejec ...
