Amgen Tour of California - Stage 5 - San Marcos Pass If Taylor Phinney was bummed with his TT performance, he got his revenge on this day. Riding down over San Marcos pass and into Santa Barbara is a swift and often dangerous descent at speed. Now, imagine that journey with Peter Sagan (Cannondale Pro Cycling) trying to chase you down. Phinney had close to 20 seconds on the group containing Sagan as well as every other heavy hitter in the race at the base of the climb. His look was that of elation as he turned on to the finishing stretches and of his wins this season, this was the closest to home. Sir Bradley Wiggins, Team Sky's leader was safe behind in the break protecting his lead on the yellow jersey. The top of the days only KOM was the best spot to view the race. Not only was the stifling weather a bit cooler with the mountain breezes, but the severe lack of fans at the top meant that we were able to get as close as possible to the racers. Aside from the front group, which were all alert and to the ...
Orica rider Esteban Chaves took a solo victory at Mountain High, while race leader Bradley Wiggins preserved his race lead at the Amgen Tour of California
Through the years, I've witnessed great bike races and my share of boring races. The 2014 Amgen Tour of California is the best I attended in several years. Veterans like Mark Cavendish and race leader (and pending winner) Bradley Wiggins have shown why they're the best at what they do. And the young guys like Will Routley and Esteban Chaves showing their youthful skills. The field has ridden in three straight days of 100-plus degree weather and every stage has been animated with strong team tactics. In a few words: it's bike racing at its finest.

FAQs About Adapting to Training and Competing in Hot Weather Posted on May 15, 2013 by CTS By Jim Rutberg, CTS Pro Coach/Co-author “The Time-Crunched Cyclist” The extreme temperatures have been a major story at the 2013 Amgen Tour of California, especially because many of the pros in the race came to the race from areas that experienced cool to cold weather this Spring. The techniques for staying cool on a hot day are pretty straight-forward: stay hydrated, douse yourself with water, put ice sock/packs in your jersey, etc. But we’ve been getting a lot of questions about how athletes adapt to heat and why some are struggling to cope with the high temperatures. So, here’s a primer on how athletes adapt to heat: What happens as an athlete acclimates to heat? The human body has an amazing ability to maintain core temperature within a very tight range (97-100 degrees Fahrenheit) despite wild fluctuations in environmental temperatures. When exposed to a hot environment for a prolonged period of time, an ...
Bontrager rider took third in the time trial at U.S. nationals and won the most courageous jersey at the Amgen Tour of California
ITs been a whirlwind week after finishing the Amgen Tour of California. My Saxo-Tinkoff team and I put in a solid performance supporting *** Rogers in his overall effort landing him on the podium at the end of the race. While I was satisfied with our work and with the opportunity to get 8 more days of racing in my skimpy season so far, I came out of the race pretty banged up. My crash on stage 2 left me limping along the rest of the week to the finish in Santa Rosa. The injuries were not catostrophic but some massive bruising on my sternum and ribs and some serious whiplash isnt too fun. I did my best but I was frustratingly uncomfortable the whole time. A quick trip back home to Colorado was spent with a few hours of therapy each day with massage, accupuncture, and chiropractic. I was also busy tying up loose ends before my wife and I head back to Europe for the rest of the summer immediately after the USPRO National Championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee. After arriving in Chattanooga I decide ...

I (Dan) predict Wiggo to repeat. But there's a twist. A news article reported (and I believe everything I read on the World Wide Interweb) that Sky Procycling has named the young & promising Chris Froome as team captain, making Wiggins sort of a superdomestique. Will this be another 1985 Hinault vs. LeMond (and it WAS kind of Hinault vs. the world, wasn't it?) epic? Or will somebody else take the reins? TJVG, fresh off his Amgen Tour of California Win? Cadel Evans putting an emphatic "period!" at the end of his career? Andy Schleck shaking off his dismal form and showing his true worth? Only time will tell. But . . . mark my words . . . Cavendish can still beat Sagan to the "finishing line" in a flat, sprint finish.

California Stage 7 Saturday’s stage in the 2013 Amgen Tour of California would be the last chance for any big movement in general classification. A difficult 3 mountain stage with the finish atop iconic Mount Diablo will give the pure climbers a chance to shine and take back time on yellow jersey Tejay Van Garderen of the BMC team. In the midst of Bike Month yesterday, 136 cyclists went out for a ride. They pedaled 102.7 miles from Escondido in temperatures that reached 100 degrees, while climbing 2,680 feet over Mt Palomar. And, they did it in four and a half hours. They were the elite of world professional cyclists, the athletes competing in this week’s Amgen Tour of California (ATOC). In its eighth running, ATOC has become one of the world’s greatest bike races and a highlight of National Bike Month (May) throughout America. In eight days, this week, the tour’s cyclists will travel 750 miles of scenic California backroads and highways. For the first time in ATOC history, they will ride south to north against prevailing winds, with stage starts and finishes in Escondido, Murrietta, Greater Palm Springs, Palmdale, Santa Clarita, Santa Barbara, Avila Beach, San Jose, Livermore, Mt Diablo, San Francisco and Santa Rosa.
