This family photo was taken just after my father, Major James Wesley Smith, passed away at MacDill AFB in 1960. This was the second time my mother was an Air Force Widow. Her first husband, Captain Robert Michael Sheedy, went down in Biloxi Bay and was buried in Arlington. Despite those losses, all three of my older brothers enlisted during the Vietnam War. My nephew did five tours in the Desert, and my granddaughter lives on an AFB outside DC with her stepdad. I never served, but I do spend my time nowadays doing volunteer work with homeless and hospitalized Veterans through the American Legion Auxiliary and the Tampa Elks Lodge I know Freedom isn't free, but I hope I wasn't rude when I questioned the well meaning gentleman who told me, "Happy Memorial Day ."
Each year around Memorial Day, Veterans of Foreign Wars members and American Legion Auxiliary volunteers distribute millions of bright red poppies in exchange for contributions to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans. The program provides multiple benefits to the veterans and to the community. The hospitalized veterans who make the flowers are able to earn a small wage, which helps to supplement their incomes and makes them feel more self-sufficient. The physical and mental activity provides many therapeutic benefits as well. Donations are used exclusively to assist and support veterans and their families. The poppy also reminds the community of the past sacrifices and continuing needs of our veterans. The poppy has become a nationally known and recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn to honor the men and women who served and died for their country in all wars. Happy Saturday to all. If you are in the Washington, NJ area today from 8 - 3 Members of the Bernardine May American Legion Post 457 Ladie ...

Memorial Day is quickly approaching, and it is time to honor all those who have sacrificed their lives and health to keep our nation free and strong. For 90 years, the American Legion Auxiliary has sponsored the distribution of poppies as a tribute to our living veterans and to honor those who have lost their lives. The Flanders Fields Red Poppy was first created as symbol of Remembrance by an American teacher Moina Belle Michael. Her inspiration for Flanders Fields Memorial Poppy came from the poem “We Shall Not Sleep” (later renamed “In Flanders Fields”) written by Colonel John McCrae about the poppies growing wild amidst the ravages of war during WW1. She was moved to wear a red poppy “...as a sign of remembrance and the emblem of keeping the faith with all who died” The poppies you see around town and at the Mound American Legion Post 398 during the month of May are made by hospitalized or disabled veterans in an Auxiliary-sponsored Poppy Shop, and vets making the poppies are paid a few ce ...

In February alone, eight significant events are scheduled, including the Dixon High Senior Ball, the Dixon Chamber of Commerce’s State of the City Address, crab feeds for both the Dixon Game Conservation Club and the Dixon Rotary Club and the Dixon Scottish Cultural Association’s annual Robert Burns Supper. And it only gets busier in March and April. So how does one keep all the events straight and organized, especially when there are so many different clubs, organizations, schools and businesses in the community? Local resident Debra Dingman, owner of The Write Mind Public Relations, has once again created a community calendar listing all the significant events in Dixon from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. “You can see just from looking through the list that this is a very active community,” said Di ...

In 1989, The American Legion Auxiliary resolved that the first Sunday of February would henceforth be designated “Four Chaplains Sunday” to honor the memory of the four chaplains of the S.S. Dorchester, and, as such, it is observed by all members with special programs of recognition. None of us knows what we are capable of until we are challenged. Each of us hopes that at the moment of confrontation, we will prove worthy. On the first Sunday of February, we honor four brave and godly men who met the ultimate challenge with quiet courage and who never heard the fanfare.
Courage takes many forms. We celebrate heroism with ticker-tape parades and stone monuments and record courageous exploits on film. But there is also a quiet courage, born of necessity and practiced without fanfare. Such was the courage of four good men aboard the troop ship S.S. Dorchester on February 3, 1943. Because of one day in their lives.. their last day …… Lts. Fox (Methodist), Goode (Jewish), Washington (Catholic) and Poling (Dutch Reformed) are linked forever together and known simply as the Four IMMORTAL Chaplains. As the Dorchester, a U.S. Army troopship, made its way through the freezing waters of the North Atlantic, the four chaplains went about their work, counseling and praying with the 904 men on board. As fearful rumors swept the ship, compounded by seasickness, stifling heat, stale air and tightly crowed quarters, the chaplains were often needed. On January 30, the two merchants ships and three Coast Guard cutters in the Dorchester’s convoy entered a stretch of water o ...

"Warwick in History" - During the years from 1915 to 1950, one of the popular forms of entertainment and also great sources of revenue for the organizations of the village were the home town talent minstrels and musical shows. The shows were sponsored by the Masons, the Grange, and the American Legion Auxiliary, and were really polished professional productions. The fine group singing and the jokes of the black-face "end men" who once the grease paint was applied, forgot their inhibitions; the masterly manner of Mr. Interlocutor; the solo work of Frank Wilson, Earl Clark, Fred Still, Clarence Kimble, Jenny Neisel and Alma Welch are well remembered. The tap dancing of the Leeper sisters, and the wonderful clog dancing of the Cards were great additions. There were also the unforgettable spiritual singing of the Logan family, the Harvest Moon dancers from Pine Island, and the square dancing group from New Milford. For many years, Harry Sudman, father of town clerk Millie Littell, was at the piano, and in ...

HOW PILOT DOGS INC. GOT IT'S START: The foresight of three individuals-Stanley Doran, visually impaired since the seventh grade; Charles W. Medick, a Columbus auto dealer and father of a blind child; and Everett R. Steece, an Administrator for the then Services for the Blind in Ohio-laid the foundation for Pilot Dogs to be chartered as a non-profit organization in January 1950. Their efforts were enhanced from Chicago with the interest of Bishop Bernard J. Sheil and much needed financial support from Henry Staffel, President of Perk Foods. Mr. Staffel's program for returning Vet's brand dog food labels met with great success. Soon 850,000 returns were received for an annual income of $60,000 to Pilot Dogs. Prime collections were done by the American Legion Auxiliary of Illinois. Friends of Mr. Medick and other interested individuals offered their services to comprise the first, ten person Board of Directors. At American Legion Auxiliary National Headquarters we get many inquiries about becoming a Junior Counselor at ALA Girls Nation--so we thought we'd let you in on on how that process works! Junior Counselors are selected from a specific class of senators. In order to be eligible to be a JC, you must have attended ALA Girls Nation two years PRIOR to the next event. For example, in 2014 the Junior Counselors will be senators who attended ALA Girls Nation in 2012. So, 2012 senators, watch your inboxes and cell phones, we will be contacting those senators recommended by the staff to be JCs for 2014 ALA Girls Nation shortly!
MY INTRODUCTION TO REPUBLICAN DIRTY TRICKS My Good Republican Grandmother gave me a lifetime membership in the Indiana American Legion Auxiliary when I was a kid. So I had to write an essay on citizenship in my Junior year of high school for the Girls State competition in my town. Then I get a phone call from someone who asks me for one sentence in my essay. Duh, I give one and the phone call abruptly ends. Guess who wins? Yeah. The only girl in town with a membership. So off I go to Indiana University all expenses paid for a week of learning about how my state government works. I bond with another girl who has the same experience I later find out and we decide to do something about it. We sneak out to smoke cigarettes and plot out a campaign strategy for the upcoming election process. Of course we do not fit in with the rest of the girls. Long story short. We come sweeping into the convention hall - literally - with brooms donated by the maintenance guy - chanting our slogan: "It's time to sweep the gove ...

The American Legion Post had a convertible for Linda and I to ride in. There was a reception at the Hotel after the parade. Then Linda and I drove back to Killeen, where the family is starting to gather for the annual family reunion on July 6.

OVS is a program started by members of the Santiam Chapter of Oregon Veterans Motorcycle Association and the All Nations Grey Wolf Band after collecting over 250 boxes of clothing, blankets, and other needed items and transporting them to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Since that time we continued to receive donations and have been able to provide baby clothes to the Albany American Legion Auxiliary for their program, shoes and clothing to local veterans, and clothing for children in our local communities. We accept any donations but only keep items that would benefit families in need. The larger donations and those that would be less beneficial are sold to provide operating cash for picking up and delivering or mailing (if needed) donations. ALL proceeds from these donations go to keep this program operating. For the last two years, All Secure Mini Storage, Albany OR has donated two storage units for this program and the donations are handled by volunteers. Your donations give a ...

To my mother's dear family and friends, It is with an extremely heavy heart that I share with you the sad news that my mother, Paulette Marshall, lost her battle with cancer this morning. For many of you who have shared this journey with my mother since 2009, you will know that she fought this cancer like a girl---she did not give up but her poor body was so tired. Please know how much your friendship, encouraging words of support and visits during the last few months of her illness meant to my mother, her husband, Mason, and my family. My mother has requested that she be remembered not with flowers but with acts of kindness and love. When my mother was a teenager, she served as a volunteer for the Dominican Sisters for the Sick and Poor in Denver, Colorado. She and other "Dominicanites" traveled with Sister Mary Pat (a nun AND a physician who drove a car no less!) to administer medical care to the less fortunate. In speaking with my mother on Wednesday evening, she requested that should you wish to d ...

Aside from all the great food put together by VAMC's "Chef" Aaron Jadofsky and his volunteer crew, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett stopped by and thanked the veterans for all they do. A shout out to all the volunteers and staff that helped make this a successful event! Photos by Benjamin Slane
Hot dam, it's Friday, the day after a great Holiday. Yesterday was a long day. Started at 2:00 AM and did not get home util after 8:00 PM. The long hours were well wlrth it, cooked all day, we cooked the brisket for 11.5 hours. The smoked brisket ended up being the melt in your mouth kind, didn't even need a knife to cut it. The new Auxiliary President at Post 67 and her helpers brought the "home made"side dishes, and everything worked out just fine. I was so tired,I did not see or hear the fireworks. I do not know of a better way to spend a day than volunteering to help your fellow American Legion members and guests have a wonderful day. I will check out the color of the grass later this morning when I beat *** out of the little white ball. Being a person who has been known to make a wager a time or two I would bet that it will be a beautiful green color.Life is good!
"The Bikers Code" posted… let us never forget those who gave their best, and the ones who gave their all, for a nation who turned it's back to them when they came home... our nation's history should never be covered over. "Tin Man"

Are you wearing your American Legion Auxiliary pin or shirt today? How about any patriotic costumes? Share them...
I have a greater understanding for the phrase "I'm proud to be an American." And I owe it to the American Legion Auxiliary.
I have/am wondering if anyone else feels the way I do about fireworks (explosives) being used to celebrate the sacrifice of our military, those who fight or have fought for our countries freedom and such. I have two foster sons in the United States Army, my grandfather was in a dinghy in Pearl Harbor serving in the Navy when it was bombed, my ex-father-in-law (god rest his soul) was in the army, I have an uncle who died from injuries incurred while serving in the Navy, great-uncle who died in Korea and so on and so forth, so I speak as someone in a military family. The idea of celebrating the service of our men and women and the battles that gained our nation Independence by setting off explosives, to celebrate and honor these great men and women in combat being blown up with explosives and shot at through the use of explosives (bullets are made projectiles by an explosive charge) just makes no sense to me. In fact, I find it offensive. I have talked to combat soldiers and veterans who have told me they h ...

The river has risen high, but the Fireworks will go on as scheduled, thanks to our team and all their hard work! It was a little dicey as the Ohio River water level continued to climb.
