Thanks to generosity of Bill & Melinda Lord I will be adding a SuperSID receiver to my solar outreach program. SID stands for Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance and monitors space weather activities or more specifically solar-induced ionspheric disturbances caused by solar flares. It can also monitor thunderstorm activity such as lightening. The original SID was designed to monitor only 1 frequency. The SuperSID is designed to monitor multiple. Earth’s ionosphere reacts strongly to the X-ray and ultraviolet radiation released by the Sun during solar events and by lightening during thunderstorms. During solar viewing I will have the SuperSID setup monitoring disturbances in the ionosphere and if the sun is flaring we should be able to see activity on a monitor as well as through the solar telescope (at least in theory). To find out more about the SuperSID you can visit Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers.

Recapping the rapid-fire flares: There was an X3 on Oct. 24th (2140 UT), an X1 on Oct 25th (1709 UT), and an X2 on Oct. 22nd (1059 UT). All three of these explosions produced strong HF radio blackouts over the dayside of Earth. In each case, communications were disturbed over a wide area for approximately one hour. Such blackouts may be noticed by amateur radio operators, aviators, and mariners. Usually, strong flares are acompanied by massive CMEs--billion-ton clouds of electrified gas that billow away from tthe blast site. So far, however, none of the eruptions from AR2192 has produced a major CME. Without a series of CMEs to rattle our planet's magnetic field, there have been no geomagnetic storms nor any widespread auroras. Earth-effects have been limited to radio blackouts. There was a great article in yesterday's paper about Father Joseph Murgas. For those of you not familiar with him he was a priest who served in Wilkes-Barre early in the 20th century. He is generally described as a renaissance man... (obviously an instant hero to me). He was a priest, scientist, and artist. His biggest claim to fame was that it was actually he, not Marconi, who is credited with the use of radio waves for communication (Murgas had 15 patents related to radio). His first radio broadcast was between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton in 1905, and there is an amateur radio club named in his honor. Incidentally, he is buried in the cemetery behind the Dallas shopping center, I have visited his gravesite many times.

Invitation to meet with us June 27th - 29th To Whom It May Interest: As Vice President & PIO of the club, I am writing to cordially invite you to meet with the Amateur Radio operators with in the Greater Rochester Area and members of Great Bay Amateur Radio Association behind Calef's on June 28 or 29 between 2pm and 2pm. This is the National Field Day for Amateur Radio people. Throughout the country, ham radio operators will be setting up radio stations in unusual locations and making contact with others as a display of their emergency communications capabilities. In the past year alone, ham radio’s people have made headlines with their work in the wildfires, floods, storms, tornadoes and other crises. The hams provide emergency communications for many government and civic organizations in disasters. In addition, they provide supplemental communications when normal systems are rendered inoperable or overloaded. Hams have been called (and correctly), “The people behind the curtain that made the heroes ...

I am so fed up with the diehard republicans on the radio these days. And I'm not talking the AM/FM, oh no. I'm talking about Colorado's Channel 19 of Amateur radio. I refuse to get on the 145.145 when they are talking politics. I mean, they are all nice guys in person (met a few of them,) but on the radio, it just goes too far. I mean, come on guys. verbally abusing a black guy (calling him the N word) who just happens to be on the other side of the country in a place of direct contact with the FCC in some cases? THAT'S BULLS*** ! I've heard rumors that the First Family is studying for their Technician Licenses! What are you going to do if you hear Barack Obama /QRP from the Oval Office? I'd sit there and QSO with him for a while if I were you guys! You know who you are!

ARRL's new video, “The DIY Magic of Amateur Radio,” is an 8-minute video that follows some of the innovative, imaginative and fun ways “hams” use radio technology in new and creative ways. The presentation is directed toward the DIY (do it yourself) movement, which is inspiring a new generation of creators, hackers and innovators. The message should be helpful for existing members to shape the ways they understand and talk about ham radio. As most of you know, Pope Francis is in the Holy Land for a few days. Some Israeli Amateur Radio operators set up a couple of special call signs and stations to commemorate his visit. I managed to make contact with one of those stations tonight with one of the digital radio modes.(RTTY)

KD9BDA is now K3DCA. (K9DCA was taken). Now I can remember my own call sign. Made contact with Quebec, Arizona, Texas, and Montreal tonight on 20 meters using PSK31 -- it's sort of like closed captioning for amateur radio. Saw a call from Italy, but couldn't quite reach. Oh well.
Two miracles in one night! IT'S RAINING!!! ...and I saved a $300 amateur radio from electronic death!!! I'm ecstatic!

CONCEPTUAL ENGINEERING: 2 of 6 ii. Legislation and regulation of orbital capabilities and frequency licensing. This area is at present our most challenging because there are local regulatory agencies and ministries whose input is required in establishing the space science policy that will enable us secure international agreements and permissions to park our satellite in orbit. Presently, the nation still has no specific space policy that would establish the Kenya Space Agency which would speed up space research both within civilian and military domains. The Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) will play a major role in facilitating major aspects of communication between the satellite and operations of the ground crew given that we will have to implement azimuth and elevation positioning plans to enable us operate in the VHF, UHF and S-Band segments of amateur radio spectrum. We’ll also require licenses to acquire pre-amplification and conditioning equipment for our ground station. To our advantage, ...

AD8BC's Hamvention 2014 Recap It's been about a week since we all made our last purchases at Hamvention and took off for our various corners of the world. This year was my 10th visit, and I have seen a few things change over the years and lots stay the same. That being said, it has never been boring. Working up to the event, I had a gut feeling that it would be a good year. During April and May. I kept watch on the vendor tracker on pcboard.ca and, compared to 2013, the numbers looked very favorable. However, I was a little worried on Thursday. During our traditional visit to the Air Force museum, I didn't see near the number of hams there that I am used to. That evening, the parking lot at Mendelson's was not full of antenna-laden vehicles. There are usually quite a few hams that stay at the Residence Inn in Beavercreek, and they seemed to be missing, both in the parking lot and the free breakfast. But they must have been doing different things and staying at different places this year... because ...

Regarding the "Public Service" controversy, here is some info directly from the source, via email received Sun 5/25/14 11:38 AM. Disregard what you might have heard via podcasts or rumors: Email begins: - There are a lot of misconceptions going around on this so let me try to clear it up a bit. First of all, nothing about ARES is changing; name, mission, field appointments, etc. are all staying the same. The reason behind this is simple, we're applying the correct terms to the correct activities. The Amateur Radio Service provides three distinct benefits to the public - community event communications, disaster communications, and emergency communications. Each one is equally important and a service to the public, but each has different characteristics. The reason we do not us the term "EmComm" is that it is jargon and not understood by everyone, instead use of the term "emergency communications", when it applies, is preferred. We have been using these terms for several years now. The use of the term EmCom ...

Another brilliant Geopark weekend came to a close earlier today. Even though yesterday was a miserable day with rain all day long the crack and atmosphere all day was the best ever seen at the event. Radio conditions were good and many of the lads had pile ups at different times during the event. On behalf of SEARG I would like to thank the following people who without their help EI2GEO 2014 would not have been a success. Thanks to Paula McCarthy and Eddie and all the staff at the Geopark Centre for allowing us to use the Geopark year after year for the event. Thanks to Mark Kilmartin for the lend of the barbeque at short notice. Bernadette Drennan for the lovely Banoffi. Massive thanks to David Connolly and his XYL for the unbelievable meal we all enjoyed and for all your efforts preparing it. And lastly thanks to all the SEARG members and people who called into the EI2GEO station even though the weather was miserable we had so many people there with us all day. Keep watching for news on a special activa ...

The well-known saying claims that every man should build a house, plant a tree and have a son. I would extend this list, in case the man is a radio amateur, with one more goal – make certain that your son becomes interested in Amateur Radio. Last summer I visited a few experienced radio amateurs who have already complied with my modified aphorism.
KB6NU's Ham Radio Tip of the Week Use that 2m transceiver! Possibly the silliest situation we have in amateur radio is that nearly all newcomers buy 2m handhelds only to find that they can’t hit that many repeaters, there aren’t that many guys on 2m anymore, and the old farts that are on 2m won’t talk to them, anyway. We should all try to do something about this. If you have a 2m radio in the shack, turn it on while you’re down there. If you here a guy give his call sign, return the call, even if you don’t recognize the callsign. You could be missing an interesting conversation, and you’re certainly missing a chance to improve amateur radio in your area. Recently, I did just that. Shortly after turning on the rig, I heard “KD8YQZ listening.” I was putzing around with something and thought about not calling him back, but then decided that whatever it was I was doing, was certainly not important enough to not talk to this guy. As it turned out, Tom had just passed the test at Dayton last Sat ...
Amateur Radio Volunteers Assist Rescue Operations in Balkans Flooding Amateur Radio volunteers in Serbia put in long hours this week, supporting rescue operations in the wake of unprecedented flooding in the Balkans that has affected Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Meteorologists have called the flooding the worst that Flooding on the Sava River in Bosnia. [Bosnia Army photo] Serbia has experienced in more than 100 years. The death toll stands at more than three dozen. CNN reported that 13 bodies had been recovered in the town of Obrenovac, Serbia, where radio amateurs have been coordinating communication to boat crews that are rescuing stranded residents. Alliance of Serbian Radio Amateurs (SRS) member Nenad Supurovic, YU1TTL, deployed to Obrenovac, after registering with the Crisis Center, to support communication between rescuers and emergency managers keeping track of those needing to be evacuated. "We showed our radio transmitters, and [the police] immediately let us through, as if we were m ...
The FACTS are: NOT the State of AZ only one County in that State (Supprise) Another local jurisdiction has abitrarily banned the use of CB and ham radio. This apparently took place April 25th by the county board of supervisors "after study" and "public comment". I'm told their "comment" was simply a notice in the local paper! This is bad news for all users of two way radio. By the way its worded, an employee of BNSF Railway could be nailed by a cop for using his two way radio. A CB operator and trucker could be popped for giving a "smokey report". But it may come back to bite them in the butt. You see, CB radio and amateur radio are licensed by the Federal Government, not by the state or county. In the case of Amateur Radio, I am certain that there is quite a lot of precedent in the Federal Regulations, Part 97 of the US Code, and in the fact that the FCC has traditionally encouraged the use of mobile amateur radio and praised its work in emergency services and disaster relief. In the case of the "scanne ...
HISTORY OF MOUNT SUGARLOAF Mount Sugarloaf, also known as Great Sugar Loaf, is a mountain in the lower Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, overlooking the cities of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock and Maitland. The summit of the mountain is in the Lake Macquarie suburb of West Wallsend and access to the summit is gained via this suburb. However, the mountain itself is also part of the city of Cessnock suburbs Mulbring and Richmond Vale.It is home to television transmitters that broadcast to the lower Hunter region. On 18 and 19 July 1965, the mountain received 10 centimetres (4 in) of snow. It also snowed on the summit in the winter of 1975. The mountain has two broadcast transmission towers. Since the 1960s their main function has been to transmit analogue television on VHF. In the 1990s two UHF analogue stations began to transmit from there. Since 2003, they have also been transmitting digital television in the UHF band (all digital television in the lower Hunter is on UHF). The analogue tel ...
No I grew up and now I have 6 got to luv amateur radio going to try England soon
A common question asked by guests who visit the Museum of Science and Industry's Amateur Radio club located in Tampa, Florida... Why are Amateur Radio Operators also called "Hams"?- Ham: a poor operator; a 'plug' (G. M. Dodge; The Telegraph Instructor) The first wireless operators were landline telegraphers who left their offices to go to sea or to man the coastal stations. They brought with them their language and much of the tradition of their older profession. In those early days, every station occupied the whole spectrum with its broad spark signal. Government stations, ships, coastal stations and the increasingly numerous amateur operators all competed for time and signal supremacy in each other's receivers. Many of the amateur stations were very powerful. Two amateurs, working each other across town, could effectively jam all the other operations in the area. Frustrated commercial operators would refer to the ham radio interference by calling them "hams." Amateurs, possibly unfamiliar with the real ...

Amateur Radio-Developed Software Assisting in Search for Missing Airliner TAGS: amateur radio software, khz 04/07/2014 US Navy personnel helping to look for missing Malaysia Air Flight MH370 are using the signal-processing and analysis package Spectrum Laboratory by Wolf Buescher, DL4YHF, to analyze recently detected 37.5 kHz “pings” that may be from the missing plane’s “black box.” Some Spectrum Laboratory screen shots as seen aboard the Australian Defense Vessel Ocean Shield were shown on TV. The US Navy personnel are guests aboard the Australian ship. VLF experimenter Warren Ziegler, K2ORS, said the software is the same package Amateur Radio experimenters used recently to detect transatlantic signals on 29 kHz. “Wolf’s package is very first-rate software, and I know that there have been other professional uses, but this was quite an interesting one!” Ziegler said. The software began as a simple DOS-based FFT program, but it is now a specialized audio analyzer, filter, frequency converte ...

Hi Folks, thanks for letting me join your distinguished Aerospace Group. I want to show you a new, powerful STEM activity, that I am pursuing to introduce Moonbounce Communications into Space Education programs for school kids, from young to Grad School. Here are some sample images that were transmitted to the moon from England, bounced off the moon, and received at the Dwingeloo Holland, 25 metre dish. If you are lucky enough to have access to a very large dish for your moonbounce activities, then wider bandwidth modes such as Slow Scan Television become available to you. The SSTV Moonbounce mode, using public domain software, was first realized, and suggested by an Artist Daniela de Paulis while talking to a ham radio operator who is lead at Dwingeloo Moonbounce station. (Jan, PA0FXB) It takes one or more large dishes, and a moderate to high amount of Amateur Radio power, (hundreds of watts at the feed) and, currently the most popular band to use is 23cm 1.296 ghz. If you want to know more ...

SAD Day in International Radio: The Voice of Russia -- the former "Radio Moscow" -- ended its shortwave broadcasts on Tuesday, April 1 -- No fooling! After contradictory announcements and reports last December, it appears the international broadcaster has indeed pulled the plug on its HF transmissions. Effective December 9, as a result of a decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Voice of Russia radio company officially ceased to exist and merged with several other state-run news agencies as part of Rossia Segodnya, a Russia-based international news service. From the 1950s through the 1980s, the station, then as Radio Moscow, was an easy catch for budding short-wave listeners (SWLs), many of whom later gravitated to Amateur Radio.
