Ospreys skipper Alun Wyn Jones guarantees supporters an honest hardworking team to do them proud on the pitch...
Wales change their pack by Gavin Rich 19 June 2014, 15:00 Wales have made two changes to their pack for Saturday’s second test against South Africa at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit. The changes are an indication that the Welsh took some heart from the second half of last week’s game, where they were far more competitive than they were in a first half where they fell 28-9 behind before eventually losing 38-16. Both the newcomers to the starting team are players who impressed as replacements at Growthpoint Kings Park. After the going over they were given by the Springbok forwards in Durban last week, it is unsurprising that Wales coach Warren Gatland has sought to reinforce his front-row, where Samson Lee gets to start for the first time ahead of Adam Jones, who struggled last week. Although Lee made his debut against Argentina in November last year, this is the first time Gatland has backed him to front the challenge from kick-off. The other change comes on the flank, where Josh Turnbull comes in t ...

Ireland v Wales: Wales player ratings February 10, 2014 15. Leigh Halfpenny: 5 Showed willingness to counter attack early on, after putting a lot of boot to ball against Italy last week, and slotted his only attempt at goal. But Halfpenny was kept quiet by the Irish defence throughout and was rattled by his British and Irish Lions understudy Rob Kearney, who was superior under the high ball. 14. Alex Cuthbert: 5 The Welsh flyer stuck to his wing for most of the match and was consequently starved of ball, but when he did get his hands on it, he was not given an inch by the Irish. The winger was also nowhere to be found when Johnny Sexton peppered the corners with probing kicks. 13. Scott Williams: 4 Williams was forced off early on after he sacrificed his shoulder in the process of clattering Brian O’Driscoll. If Jonathan Davies does not return soon, Wales will once again be left desperately short in the midfield. 12. Jamie Roberts: 6.5 The Welshman trudged forward throughout and occasionally managed to ...

Six Nations Championship 2014: Wales v Italy Dates: 1 February, 2014Kick-off: 14:30 GMT Sam Warburton will be on the bench as Wales start their defence of the Six Nations Championship against Italy in Cardiff on Saturday. Alun Wyn Jones says he has matured since the first time he captained Wales. The Ospreys second-row led his country against Italy in 2009 when, he admits, he might have been too young.
Six Nations Key Clash Preview: Wales v Italy January 31, 2014 This Saturday, Wales will kick off the Six Nations when they host Italy at the Millennium Stadium and the Red Dragons know that they have the opportunity to complete an unprecedented hat trick of tournament wins. Despite a turbulent autumn campaign, when they were beaten by the brutality of the South Africans and the brilliance of the Australians, Wales enter the tournament as favourites. Poor autumn form and the regional rugby exodus had little effect on Wales’ successful campaign last season and expect a similar response from the wounded Welsh this time round. Wales Last year, Wales showed no intention of defending their Six Nations title in their opener against Ireland until they went 27 points behind. This year, it is hard to see them affording the Italians the same luxury. Alun Wyn Jones will captain the Welsh for the first time since 2009, with Sam Warburton, who has not played since the loss against Australia in November, on the bench. ...

Sam Warburton on standby for starting berth in Wales's Six Nations opener • Lions' captain has recovered from shoulder injury • Dan Lydiate may miss Italy match to attend birth Sam Warburton was named on Wales's bench against Italy on Saturday after recovering from the shoulder injury he sustained at the end of the autumn Test series, but the Lions' captain may start the champions' opening match of their Six Nations title defence after Dan Lydiate returned to France on Tuesday when his fiancee went into labour. Warren Gatland said he would have no qualms about starting the flanker, despite his lack of match fitness, but the second-row Alun Wyn Jones, who was named captain in place of Warburton, will wear the armband if Lydiate fails to return to the squad's training base by Friday. "I have told Dan to take a few days off and we will be able to accommodate him even if he returns on Friday," Gatland said. Best of the Weekend: Wales fall at the final hurdle December 2, 2013 Same old story for Wales Australia turned in one of the performances of their season, as they saw off the challenge of Wales at a packed Millennium Stadium, triumphing 30-26. Arguably the best test of the QBE Internationals, neutrals were treated to a ferocious and intense match, but ultimately the skill of Quade Cooper at fly half, and the tenacity of Australia at the breakdown, were enough to edge the result in their favour. George North, Toby Faletau, and Alun Wyn Jones in particular shone for Wales, but a combination of injuries and a resurgent Wallaby performance, meant that Wales are still left searching for that elusive win against one of the southern hemisphere’s ‘Big Three’. Wales have now lost 18 consecutive tests against the SANZAR nations, and turning their impressive Six Nations form into wins against these sides remains Warren Gatland’s biggest headache, as attentions turn inevitably towards the Rugby World Cup in 2 ...

WRU in shock move to centrally contract top players October 24, 2013 A statement from the WRU this morning revealed the the Union offered on Monday, just hours before Regional Rugby Wales’ announcement backing the Rugby Champions Cup, to centrally contract the country’s top stars in a bid to keep them at their regions and halt the player drain to France and England. The proposal would see top players such as Leigh Halfpenny, Sam Warburton, Adam Jones, Jonathan Davies, Alun Wyn Jones and Ian Evans – all of whom are out of a deal at the end of the season – contracted to the WRU until the European crisis is solved and the regions are in a position to renegotiate with their stars. Fanatics, My Lions/Wallabies XV of the series and why: 1 - Ben Robinson : We all know that scrumming is more about technique and grey matter then just physical brawn. Ben plays testimony to that. A wily old fox who was great in open play as well along with some nice pick and drives. Would make most international teams. 2 - Stephen Moore : The better hooker of the series especially if you consider the first 2 tests but Hibbard had his number in the third and certainly matched him for power and general open play. Why Hibbard did not start earlier we will never know. 3 - Adam Jones : One of the great 3's of the game. Huge experience and both him and Robinson went toe to toe, great battle to watch. Mr cool, calm and collective and a gentleman of the game. Very few left unfortunately IMHO. 4 - Alun Wyn Jones : I thought the Wallabies would have the adv here...boy I was wrong. Alun stood firm and his captaincy in the third test showed he was one of the unsung hero's in this bunch! 5 - Geoff Parling - It was a . ...
Lions break Aussie hearts Sydney - The British and Irish Lions claimed their first series win since 1997 when they overpowered Australia 41-16 in the third Test on Saturday to seal a 2-1 victory. The Lions were quick out of the blocks at the Olympic Stadium with prop Alex Corbisiero crossing for a second minute try and fullback Leigh Halfpenny kicking 12 points to open up a 19-3 lead after 26 minutes. Australia fought back with James O'Connor scoring just before halftime and inside centre Christian Leali'ifano kicking the home side to within three points at 19-16 with 25 minutes remaining. But the Lions finally found the attacking rhythm that they lacked in the second Test loss and flyhalf Jonny Sexton, winger George North and centre Jamie Roberts crossed for second half tries as the Lions rode out comfortable winners. "It's pretty indescribable. There was a lot said about selection in the week...but I think we proved the Northern Hemisphere can do pretty well," Lions captain Alun Wyn Jones said in a pitc ...
What a fantastic come back by the Lions. Thought they had thrown it away early in the second half, but the backs came though with power. Leigh Halfpenny an absolute hero, as is the understated Alun Wyn Jones and Adam Jones. Must also say that I respect Aussie captain James Horwill for his performances and leadership. Don't believe he meant to stamp on Alun Wyn in the first test and he's come through all the flak with amazing dignity. Also well done to Warren Gatland and his team, who have been under the cosh following their team selection. Result proves that he was right. Great series.

Alex Corbisiero returns to the Official Lions Rugby test side for the third and deciding test! Geoff Parling and George North retain their places for the Sydney showdown. Alun Wyn Jones will lead the side. Manu Tuilagi is amongst the replacements alongside Tom Youngs, Dan Cole, Mako Vunipola and Owen Farrell. The team shows 6 changes from the second test.
Australia captain James Horwill will be available for this weekend's 3rd Test against the British and Irish Lions after being cleared of stamping for a 2nd time, the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) said. Horwill was cited for stamping on the head of Lions lock Alun Wyn Jones in the 1st Test in Brisbane but initially cleared by New Zealand judicial officer Nigel Hampton on 23rd June only for the International Rugby Board (IRB) to appeal against the verdict. The reviewing officer Graeme Mew, who is based in Canada, delivered his decision following a hearing that lasted more than 2 hours on Monday and said the appeal would only have been upheld if the IRB had established a clear mistake on Hampton's part. "There was sufficient evidence upon which a reasonable Judicial Officer could have reached the decision that was made." Mew said in an ARU statement. "Accordingly, it could not be said that the Judicial Officer was manifestly wrong or that the interests of justice otherwise required his decision be overturned. ...
Wallaby captain James Horwill has been cleared of stamping British and Irish Lions lock Alun Wyn Jones which frees him up to play in this weekend's deciding Third Test in Sydney.
Absolutely scandalous that Alun Wyn Jones escaped punishment for his disgraceful headbutt on James Horwill's studs.
Australia captain James Horwill cleared of stamping on Lions lock Alun Wyn Jones. Free to play on.
Australia captain James Horwill is cited after an incident with Alun Wyn Jones in the first Test with the Lions.
Sunday morning Sports wrap: *rugby Kurtley Beale missed a crucial penalty at the death as the Lions held on for a 23-21 win over the Wallabies in the 1st test at Lang Park. Australia was left with a high injury toll with Christian Lealiifano, Pat McCabe and Berrick Barnes all stretchered off while Australia captain James Horwill was cited following an incident with Alun Wyn Jones. New Zealand fly half Daniel Carter kicked 14 points as the All Blacks scored a 24-9 victory over France in New Plymouth to complete a 3-0 series sweep. *NRL Wests Tigers' notched up their second win in three weeks as they edged out Canberra 17-12 at Campbelltown *AFL Richmond laid the Western Bulldogs to waste in a 10-goal thrashing at Docklands, Sydney fell to Port Adelaide by three goals in Kurt Tippett's Swans debut, while St Kilda thumped the Demons by 35. *Strong swims from James Magnussen and Cate Campbell highlighted Saturday's final day of the Australian time trials. *Australia A has a tight match on its hands heading in ...
On the evidence of the first test, this is my Lions team for the second: 15-Leigh Halfpenny, 14-Alex Cuthbert, 13-Jonathan Davies, 12-Jamie Roberts, 11-George North, 10-Justin Tipuric, 9-Mike Phillips; 1- Gethin Jenkins, 2-Richard Hibbard, 3-Adam Jones, 4- Alun Wyn Jones, 5-Ian Evans , 6-Dan Lydiate, 7- Sam Warburton (capt), 8-Toby Faletau. I realise this selection will be contentious because of playing Tipuric out of position, but what other choice is there when Dan Biggar isn't in the squad?
AUSTRALIA V BRITISH & Irish Lions The British and Irish Lions will pit their vast experience against a Wallaby team featuring three debutants and a rookie flyhalf in their bid to seize the momentum in today’s first Test in Brisbane. The tourists, chasing their first series win in 16 years, go into the opening match of the three-Test series anchored by a powerful set-piece, quality leadership with three Lions captains in their ranks, and the calming experience of centre Brian O’Driscoll and lock Paul O’Connell. The two Irishmen have 222 Test caps between them, with a dozen for the Lions, giving them a decided edge over the Wallabies, who won the last series in Australia in 2001. O’Driscoll and O’Connell are joined by five other survivors from the series against the Springboks in South Africa four years ago in scrum-half Mike Phillips, prop Adam Jones, lock Alun Wyn Jones and back-rowers Tom Croft and Jamie Heaslip. The forward pack alone has played a combined total of 403 Tests, and 17 Lions Test ...
Lions: L Halfpenny; A Cuthbert, B O'Driscoll, J Davies, G North; J Sexton, M Phillips; A Corbisiero, T Youngs, A Jones; AW Jones, P O'Connell; T Croft, S Warburton (c), J Heaslip. Reps: R Hibbard, M Vunipola, D Cole, G Parling, D Lydiate, B Youngs, O Farrell, S Maitland. Eight Welsh players will be in the Lions first Test starting line-up to face Australia on Saturday, after Warren Gatland revealed his picks earlier today. Sam Waburton will captain the side in the No.7 jersey and he is joined by full-back Leigh Halfpenny, wings Alex Cuthbert and George North, centre Jonathan Davies, scrum-half Mike Phillips, second row Alun Wyn Jones and prop Adam Jones. The only surprise was the inclusion of Englishman Alex Corbisiero at loosehead, Mako Vunipola having been expected to get the nod butu having to make do with a place on the bench. That's the situation too for hooker Richard Hibbard, who has lost out to in-form Tom Youngs for the No.2 jersey. Hibbard and blindside Dan Lydiate are the Welshmen among the rep ...

I'm really enjoying the British and Irish Lions rugby union tour to Australia. There were some brilliant performances on Saturday: Leigh Halfpenny, Alun Wyn Jones, Tom Croft amongst others. I really like the way the squad is working together. Can't wait for the first test on Saturday. I think Australia will struggle against the power and skill of this Lions team.

The best thing about yesterday was players taking their chance for the tests. Alun Wyn Jones, Tom Croft and Jonathan Davies all outstanding.

Alun Wyn-Jones should take the opportunity of this Lions tour to talk to Paul O'Connell about how to handle hair loss with dignity.
Alun Wyn Jones really needs to have that chat with himself, and his barber, and accept that he is losing his hair and has to shave his head
Alun Wyn Jones, Halfpenny, Croft deffo starters for the first test. Heaslip didn't have his best game. Toby Faletau fav for no.8
