Wow. Bob Guzzardi - the guy the Corbsters spent $60,000 to kick off the ballot for the flimsiest reason - still took 3,501, or 14.46% of Allegheny county, Corbett’s home county. Additionally: Write-In took another 842, or 3.48% in Corbett's home. But hey, that left 82.06% for the unchallenged incumbent Governor. In his own primary. In his own home county. County-wide. Even after spending $60,000 to remove the only primary opponent by the flimsiest loophole, 303 - just over 3% - of Dauphin County Rs wrote in someone else.

CAWLEY DEFEATS CORBETT BY ABOUT 30,000 VOTES ON PRIMARY DAY! . May 20-21, 2014: Yes, it's true. Tom Corbett, Republican Gubernatorial candidate, was soundly defeated by his OWN RUNNING MATE! . Believe It... or NOT! . By the way, here's a question: What does "100%" mean? Well, according to the Corbett/Cawley vote-counters, "100%" could mean JUST ABOUT ANYTHING THEY WANT IT TO - and is a convenient rubber stamp properly used to THROW VOTES AWAY! . This goes beyond the "100%" self-help voting count tactics of Kim Il Song of North Korea, or Enver Hoxha (pronounced *** JUH) of Albania during the "good old days" of "pure Marxism-Leninism". . Corbett did not win 100% of the Republican votes cast in this primary. At most, he won around 93%. . Take a look at the list of Corbett/Cawley votes from various selected counties in Pennsylvania, as of about 3:30 PM, May 21, 2014 - in the official State count: . ALLEGHENY COUNTY: Corbett, 19, 864. Gov. Tom Corbett touted his support for science, technology, engineering and math — or STEM — education programs during a tour on Monday of the North Shore's Carnegie Science Center. Corbett is confronting intense criticism over past education cuts from four Democrats seeking their party's nomination in the May 20 primary to challenge him in November. But Corbett pointed to his February budget address in which he proposed $240 million in Ready to Learn block grants, including an extra $25.5 million for schools in Allegheny County, that could benefit STEM programs. Critics dubbed the proposed 3.3 percent increase an election-year ploy. “It is a challenging period of time for budgets, we understand that,” Corbett said. “But we believe that STEM is going to have a great role (in education) for future generations.” Corbett's budget “strategically invests taxpayer dollars into areas that will benefit students and the long-term economic stability of the commonwealth,” said acting Education Secre ...

ANOTHER FEMALE BITES THE DUST Shantia Dennis, Woman Accused Of Selling Heroin In Happy Meals, 'Crushed' By Charges Joe Mandak 02/12/2014 TOPIC Crime PITTSBURGH (AP) — A woman charged with selling heroin hidden in Happy Meals when she worked for a Pittsburgh McDonalds is "emotionally crushed" by the charges. But defense attorney David Shrager stopped short of denying the charges against 26-year-old Shantia Dennis, of East Pittsburgh. Dennis' preliminary hearing was postponed Tuesday. It was reset for April 9 so Allegheny County prosecutors can get back crime lab tests on the alleged drugs involved. Dennis was arrested Jan. 29 after police say they caught her selling 10 doses of heroin hidden inside a Happy Meal to a confidential informant. Investigators said they also recovered more heroin from Dennis. Authorities say Dennis would sell the drugs to drive-thru customers who uttered the code words, "I'd like to order a toy."

At that time, he was city editor for the Pittsburgh Courier. He was promoted managing editor in 1948. After being managing editor, he was promoted to executive editor of the Pittsburgh Courier in 1956 and remained executive editor until 1965 after John H. Sengstacke purchased the ailing paper. During his time at the Courier, he highlighted the struggles of African Americans for fair employment opportunities. He was a civil rights leader noted for his ability to unify Black newspeople in the fight against discrimination of African Americans in the press. After retirement, he continued to be actively involved in the Pittsburgh community, including becoming the first African American officer on the Community Chest of Allegheny County Council. The death of Phillip Seymour Hoffman is tragic. I will not judge him. I just feel sad he will not be able to share his tremendous gift anymore. The 22 overdose deaths in Allegheny County in the last two weeks are equally tragic. I can't judge them either. I will say that it seems bizarre to me that people are insisting that the death of Rocco is somehow more tragic then the death of these sad people. Who knows what gifts might have been lost when these people died? PSH had drug problems his entire fault life and he did great work despite his addictions.

Women in Business Today on Your American Story radio, Raja returns live to the airwaves, in order to take a special look at the impact that women have in the world of business, as he talks with a pair of the most prominent female business leaders in Western Pennsylvania. -Over the past few years, one of the organizations in Western Pennsylvania that has experienced a pretty significant decline has been the Port Authority of Allegheny County. As the region's public transportation organization endured a very public multi-faceted battle of increased fuel costs, cuts in the labor force and cuts in routes, things had been looking more and more grim. Enter Ellen McLean, the former CFO of the Port Authority who stepped into the role of the Port Authority's Interim CEO in February of 2013. Over the past few months, things have been looking up for the Port Authority under her leadership, and after an extensive search to determine a permanent CEO, it was decided that there was no better candidate to fill the bil .. ...

... hump days -- in 1912 and 1913, Pittsburgh authorities carried out "The Hump Project" to clear out and level the natural topographic bulge that existed between the Hill District and the Point. Ungodly amounts of earth moving with primitive equipment changed the gradient of Grant Street, Diamond Street, and Oliver, Fifth, Sixth, Webster and Wylie Avenues to the gentle uphill configuration we have today between Smithfield and Ross. The sheer volume of dirt was one thing. Water, gas and sewer lines were quite another. The biggest problem was working around enormous existing buildings in the area like the Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail, 20-story Frick Building and Kaufmann's department store. Photos 5 and 6 show the renowned "Bridge of Sighs" during the project, across which guilty defendants were whisked from the courtroom to their jail cell. The old jail itself, photo 8 and 9, was more beautiful outside than inside (obviously) and was world renowned for its Romanesque architecture by Henry Hobson . ...

I am a born and bred Pittsburgher. My family started Pittsburgh's first cab company. GREEN CAB. My grandfather drove those cabs while getting his BA at the University of Pittsburgh. One snowy night, he rolled over in one of those cabs, but escaped without a single injury. My people were deep into culture and God. Church was a staple for me since baptism. Half my blood is from Tennesssee..my dear father. ROBERT E. MCKNIGHT, who, upon a magna *** laude graduation from Vanderbuilt University..was grabbed by Westinghouse and moved to our East End. He began a 44 year career here with big W. I know the east of Pittsburgh well. I was a knotholer at Forbes Field..one of the most interesting places for baseball to be played. It was there I saw the great 1960 Pirates play. Met the great Roberto Clemente. I adored them all. I was from city people. But my parents migrated further to the east to the suburbs. I was raised in the largest township in Allegheny County, Penn Hills. I have had a charmed life. Amen!
This was emailed to me this morning Public Service Announcement Please note information on bottom At least 22 people in Western Pennsylvania, including 15 in Allegheny County have now been killed by a deadly mix of heroin and the narcotic Fentanyl. The heroin is believed to be in bags stamped with the words Theraflu, Bud Ice and Income Tax. "Heroin with these specific stamps has been identified by narcotics agents not only in Allegheny County, but also in Westmoreland, Armstrong, Butler, Lawrence and Beaver counties. However, these stamped bags could already or eventually be available in other counties across Pennsylvania," Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane said. "We are contacting hospitals, medical examiners, and police departments in surrounding areas to be on the lookout for these specific stamps of heroin." According to the medical examiner's office, preliminary tests on the bags labeled "Theraflu" show they appear to contain the drug Fentanyl. Fentanyl is roughly 100 times more powerful th ...
FYI: WARNING: The death count is growing in western PA from a deadly heroin being sold on the streets. Twenty-two people have died in the last week including 15 in Allegheny County from this heroin. The heroin is mixed with the narcotic Fentanyl, making for a very dangerous and even deadly combination for the user. PA Attorney General Kathleen says that the stamped bags that this drug is being sold in have been found in six western counties. Kane is calling this a "major public health crisis" and warns that this drug could spread to other areas beyond western PA. (source: CBS Pittsburgh & Pittsburgh Courier)

Vashon, George B. (1824-1878) Online Encyclopedia Index George Boyer Vashon, attorney, scholar, essayist and poet, made noteworthy contributions to the fight for emancipation and education of blacks. He was born on July 25, 1824, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the third child and only son of an abolitionist, John Bethune Vashon. At the age of 16, Vashon enrolled in Oberlin Collegiate Institute in Ohio. On August 28, 1844, Vashon earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with valedictory honors, becoming the college’s first black graduate. Five years later, Vashon was awarded a Master of Arts degree in recognition of his scholarly pursuits and accomplishments. After returning to Pittsburgh, he studied law under Judge Walter Forward, a prominent figure in Pennsylvania politics. After two years of reading law, Vashon applied for admission to the Allegheny County bar. His application was denied on the grounds that colored people were not citizens. This inequitable act led to Vashon’s decision to emigrate to Haiti. . ...

I am so TIRED of all the anti-UPMC people, the continued smear job, and misinformed bashing the organization, that they twist information to make UPMC look like the big bad wolf. I have worked for UPMC for the better half of a decade, and this organization does right by the city, the region and the people it employs. For those of you who continue to believe that UPMC doesn't pay its fair share of taxes here is some real knowledge for you. FACT: Last year, UPMC paid more than $200 million in local, state, and federal taxes. UPMC already pays real estate taxes on 49 percent of the property we own. Our hospital campuses compose almost all of the remaining 51 percent of the land UPMC owns – those properties were tax-exempt when each hospital joined UPMC, and they continue to operate as “institutions of purely public charity” in every sense of the phrase. All told, UPMC's 500 acres of tax-exempt property accounts for just 1/10th of 1 percent of all the land in Allegheny County. Again let me make that cle ...
On PCNC tonight, Matt Drozd attacked Jim Roddey for saying that he supported Tom Baker because he wanted to see us get some young blood on the County Council, in which Matt Drozd responded in asking what about the middle aged and seniors. Mr. Drozd, if Tom Baker wins in November, there will be exactly 1 person under the age of 40 on County Council next year, while there will be 14 people that are middle aged or older. So believe me when I say that they're well represented, while it's the youth of Allegheny County that are underrepresented and need a voice. That's why we all voted for and supported Tom Baker.

Chalk it up to ObamaCare: Professor Clint Benjamin teaches English part-time at the Community College of Allegheny County in Pennsylvania, according to a November report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Like fast-food workers, hotel employees and other service economy workers in industries that rely heavily on part-time labor, Benjamin and many professors like him are on the losing end of the Health Insurance Tax that is at the heart of the Affordable Care Act. The college is slashing the credit hours that part-time faculty may teach and cutting the hours of the school’s other part-time staffers to get them below the 30-hour weekly minimum standard that the ACA uses to define a “full time” worker. An employee working more than 30 hours at an institution the size of a public college will become eligible for the ACA’s health insurance mandate starting in 2014. Source: Job Creators Network
